Some days ago I attended the National Day Celebration

Reception of the Chinese Consulate where I heard the choir

singing ‘Ode to the Motherland’. I remembered during the

Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympic two years ago the

same song was performed by Yang Peiyi. In China, besides the

‘March of the Volunteers’ (lyrics by Tian Han and composed by Nie

Er in 1935) which had become the theme song of the famous

movie ‘Children of Troubled Times’, perhaps this ‘Ode to the

Motherland’ (written by Wan Xin in 1950) is the most popular

patriotic and revolutionary song in the recent history of China. As

reported, Wan Xin just happened was in front of the Tinnaman

Square in Beijing on the eve of the 1st October 1950 and he was

so impressed by the glorious and phenomenal setting and

decoration there. He was so touched and urged to create a song

to capture the feeling. On his way back on the train to Tianjin he

used his pen to recreate the scenes of the 5-star flags in heaps of

joyful singing, in the form of a song embracing vivid lyrics and bold

melody. In a splash, the beauty and plentifulness of our

motherland, 5000 years of our civilisation, over a hundred years of

abuse by foreign powers, the endurance and struggling of

Chinese people….. all these came out of his mind as he wrote.

At the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held in

October 1951, Chairman Mao gave personal commendation to

this song and as recognition gave Wan Xin a newly published

copy of the ‘Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung’ with his

own autograph. When I was studying in the university I often

heard of this song and equally was filled with the upbeat. I truly

feel some of the lyrics portray how China has come out from the

harassment of the western powers and progressively has

become a dignified and composed member in the world political

arena. The song demonstrates Chinese do not want to dictate the

world yet we are not a nation to put up with any harassment.

Now China has really become strong. With this song in mind, I

hope Chinese leaders would bring the country into a world of

peace and justice.

freedom are our ideals; We had overcome so many obstacles, to

achieve today’s liberation! We love peace, we love home, But if

anyone dares to infringe upon our peaceful home, We will render

him to downfall!
