If you love me you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.”

Welcome all God’s children God loves each of us uniquely and fiercely no matter where we come from or how we look. Those of us who follow him know that it’s not just important to love each other. It’s God’s law. Celebrate diversity. Invite foreigners or people who are different from you to your home or church. Jesus was once a foreigner in a strange land and was grateful for the hospitality he received. There is great diversity in the Communion of Saints. Practice patience. It can be tough to listen to someone with a speech impediment or a heavy accent. Imagine, though, how grateful that person will be when you offer your attention. Perhaps it would help to imagine the face of Christ in the face before you. Counsel the ignorant. Someone from another country, background, or with different abilities than yours might behave in what looks like an inconsiderate way out of ignorance or limitations. He might appreciate being informed. Speak up. Don’t stay quiet when you witness prejudice, and be positive about diversity if friends or relatives start criticizing others’ faith, cultures or abilities. Act with love. The God of love gave of himself so we could be reunited with him. We share that love when we assume the best of others and look for the good in all God’s children.
Advice, comfort, and encouragement in the Bible The Bible is full of practical life guidance that is as relevant today as it was when written. Its advice, comfort, and encouragement is timeless. Advice Written by a wise Old Testament scribe and teacher, the Book of Sirach offers advice on just about everything we deal with today—friendship, education, finances, etiquette, marriage, family life, and more. Comfort In St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus gives comfort for the insecurities of daily life. For example, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26). For more, see Matthew 6:25-34, 7:7-11, 11:28, and 28:20. Encouragement Need encouragement? Try Psalm 118, “The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid.” Or, Psalm 40, “I waited patiently for the Lord’s help; then he listened to me and heard my cry.” And Psalm 23, “I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and staff give me courage.”
Volunteers Needed for Altar Society Where do your talents lie? Do you enjoy helping with small duties needed to maintain our church with great love for our Lord?
Filling holy water fonts? Changing candles?
Washing and ironing altar linens or al-tar server robes?
If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you may want to help out with the Altar Society Ministry. Please call Belinda Wulke 626-437-7670.
Around the Parish-Events & Notices SVDP Mardi Gras in May On Wednesday, May 24th at the Westin Bonaventure, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will hold the 2017 Benefit Dinner and Awards Ceremo-ny. This year’s honorees include Fa-ther Matt Elshoff, OFM Cap and his Old Mission Santa Inez Parish Community. Also being honored is our very own Linda Swick, CEO, International Promotions. If you are interested in attending the event and honoring Father Matt, former St. Bede parishioner, past president of St. Francis High School and former weekend presider at St. Bede and our current parishioner and lector, Linda Swick, tickets may be pur-chased through Gina Doyle at St. Vincent de Paul, 323-226-9643.
A Call For Help!!!
Do you have a free hour once a month or once a week? If so, why not help Skidettes make lunches? Skidettes, one of our oldest outreach ministries, provides nourishing lunches to skid row shelters. Lunches are made for battered women, underprivileged youth, homeless teens and others. The less fortunate in downtown rely on our generosity. Skidettes currently needs a few helping hands. Lunches are made in the kitchen every Tuesday, Thurs-day & Friday from 7am to 8am and each Saturday from 8am to 9am. Just stop by when you have a hour to spare.
You will enjoy the conversation; feel good about helping others and feed over 1200 people who depend on our Saint Bede Skidette Ministry for meals. For more information call Mary Ann Fell 818-247-3104.

Congratulations! Thank you for your terrific response. Our pledges at $177,994 now exceed our goal of $168,300. With paid pledges now at $141,956 we are well on the way to another successful campaign year! Remember meeting our goal in paid pledges keeps the underfunded schools and parishes open and serving the needs of those less fortunate in our LA Arch-diocese. It’s an easy way to help others!
There is still time to make a 2017 pledge, if you haven’t done so already. Don’t forget, the money received over goal comes back to St. Bede and is shared between our parish outreach ministries. Exceeding goal in paid pledges is one of the ways we help our very own.

818-790-7884 [email protected] Parent Ed and the Annual Train Trip! St. Bede Parent Ed parents and children attended the annual May train trip. Meeting at the Glendale Train Station we rode the Metrolink train to Union Station. Our Instructor, Jo Ann Gantus obtained hats and coloring books for every child. Families rode the Red Line subway to California Plaza where they visited Angel's Flight. Crossing the street we visited the historic Grand Central Market observing foods from all over the world. A sub-way ride back to Union Station took us to Olvera Street (the oldest street in Los Angeles) where we had a deli-cious Mexican lunch and bought trinkets from the outdoor marketplace! We rode the Metrolink train back to Glendale with happy parents and students. A fun day was had by all!!

Sharing the Gospel Jesus gave us two commandments. The first is Love God above all things and the second is Love your neighbor as yourself. Make good choices. Put God first in your life. Say a prayer before getting out of bed every morning. Say a prayer every night. Treat others like you would like to be treated. If you love Jesus and obey his commandments, the Holy Spirit will be sent to help you.
Prayer Jesus, help me be kind and helpful to my family and friends.
Mission for the Week
Every morning and every night I will thank God for my family and friends.

The Bulletin Board Interfaith Baccalaureate Speaker Aziza Hasan
Aziza Hasan, passionate advocate for coalition building, peacemaking, and interfaith relations, is the Executive Director of NewGround, a Muslim-Jewish partnership for change. The daughter of a Palestinian father and a Christian mother from the Midwest, Aziza was born in Amman, Jordan and then raised in Halstead, Kansas. Moving among cultures and straddling two worlds is nothing new to Aziza. Her parents met while attending college in Kansas. As the only Muslims in their hometown, Aziza and her three siblings struggled with their dual identity. She received a Bachelor of Arts in History and social sciences from Bethel College in Kansas, and a master’s degree in
history from Wichita State University. As an undergrad, she was in the student senate all four years of college and the president of the student senate in her junior and senior years. After college, she worked for two years AmeriCorps which gave her hands-on experience in community organizing and group problem-solving. She also served as the Government Relations Director at Muslim Public Affairs Council for six years. She has appeared on national television including CNN and ABC news, and her writings have been covered by various print media. She has authored or co-authored several papers, such as Interfaith Curriculum for Peacemaking and Standing Together: Interfaith Dialogue for Muslims and Christians. Aziza lives in Pasadena with her husband, Sani, and their two young boys, Ramsey and Rayan.
