My Dear Parishioners,
My weekly column from last Sun-
day's bulletin on July 5 had to be submit-
ted early, due to the publisher's holiday
deadline. Because of that, I did not have
an opportunity to express my gratitude
and delight over the record-breaking
attendance at last week's Patriotic Concert by the Verdi Band. You know, before the concert
began, a reporter from the Courier-Times interviewed me,
and we took a guess at the attendance, at over 400. Howev-
er, that was ten minutes before the concert began. Well into
the first musical selection, concert-goers were still arriving
and filled up much of the space further back on the field.
So I would say it was closer to 600-650 people.
What made me feel especially proud that night was that
so many people told me that they either were members of
local Protestant or Jewish congregations, or other nearby
parishes. Isn't it great that they felt so welcomed to join us
as a community to celebrate our nation's birth? In a day
and age when we all feel so divided, it was a joy to feel
the unity that night. We do such a great job as a parish,
creating a sense of hospitality and welcome when we host
events!
Speaking of hosting, I think we can all sense the grow-
ing enthusiasm as Philadelphia and our region gets ready to
host the nation and the world for the World Meeting of
Families (WMOF). Here at St. Bede's, our second of four
school buses is almost filled. We remind you that if you
would like to secure a reservation on a bus, you are to pre-
sent your non-refundable reservation fee of $35 to the Par-
ish Office.
While we know that many from our area will want to
seize the opportunity to participate in the Mass with the
Holy Father so close to home, however, last week I read a
quote from a city Planning Director for the event, who said
that Mass-goers should be prepared to leave early, return
late, walk several blocks to and from the Mass, wait in
long lines for security checks, and stand for hours prior to
the liturgy.
It is important to remember that in whatever country
that Pope Francis visits, those who come to the Mass real-
ize that they are on a pilgrimage, and like all pilgrimages,
it requires a certain amount of sacrifice. But it always
yields so many spiritual benefits!
May God Bless You,
St. Bede 103 July 12, 2015

Mark 6:30–34 The apostles, fresh from their missionary travels, return to
Jesus and report on what they have done. Jesus invites them
to come and rest. But of course rest is impossible, and the
crowds surround Jesus, who feels pity for them. Many in the
world today are like sheep without a shepherd. As we listen
to God’s word, let us reflect on ways that we can respond to
their needs.

50th Anniversary
Commemorative Book Now that our 50th Anniversary year is over,
with all of its successful and joyous monthly
celebrations, we come to the last and perhaps
greatest task: compiling a commemorative
book that will help us to recall these memories
for years to come. It will also share the interest-
ing history that has shaped us into the vibrant
community of faith that we are.
A committee of parishioners is compiling,
writing and editing what will be a 50th Anni-
versary, limited edition, keepsake book. The
committee envisions a book worthy of display
in your home, on the coffee table, or as the per-
fect Christmas gift.
The book will contain over 100 pages of his-
tory, stories, pictures and personal testimonials
from former priests, religious, etc., that will
help us to cherish and preserve the memories of
50 years for generations to come. The book will
be available for purchase in mid-November,
2015, if not sooner.
The anniversary committee would like to
invite as many parishioners as possible to be a
part of this historical record. A special section
of the book will contain a listing of the names
of book patrons, living and deceased. A dona-
tion of $30 for a single line listing in this sec-
tion will also entitle the donor to a free copy.
Below you will find a sample form to assist
you in making a listing in this special section.
We ask that you complete the form and attach it
to your donation, and drop it off at the Rectory
as soon as possible.

It is our hope that the chapel may be a source of
God’s peace for you and that you tell your family and
friends about it.
In order to have a constant vigil of prayer before the
Blessed Sacrament, we must make sure someone is in the chap-
el for all 168 hours of every week. The only way we can do
this is with committed adorers. A committed adorer is some-
one who promises to make a weekly visit to the chapel for at
least one hour on the same day at the same time each week. An
example is coming in every Friday from 7AM to 8AM. It is
only through the generosity and sacrifice of a committed ador-
er, giving of their time to Jesus that we are able to have perpet-
ual Eucharistic Adoration at St. Bede.
We are in constant need of committed adorers for various
hours of the day and night. We ask that you prayerfully con-
sider becoming a committed adorer. It’s a simple matter of
putting God first in your life. “In everything you do, put God
first and He will direct you and crown your efforts with suc-
cess.” (Prov3, 6-10)
We welcome members of our neighboring parishes and
invite you to share in the blessings of perpetual adoration. Our current open hours are: Sunday 11AM, 1PM & 6PM,
Tuesday 12AM & 2AM, Wednesday 3PM, Friday 11AM, Sat-
urday 2AM, 5AM & 6PM. Our ultimate goal is to have two
adorers for every hour so if these hours are impossible for you
due to your schedule, please contact us to arrange a more con-
venient time. We can accommodate every schedule. Also, pray-
er partners are requested for the following hours (commitment
of 2x per month): Sunday 3PM, Monday 4AM & 4PM,
Wednesday 3AM & 12PM, and Friday 5AM.
For more information please contact Debbie & Sean McDer-
mott by phone at (215) 504-9897 or email us at

Dear Parishioners,
Currently we are enjoying a Biblical Walk
with the Blessed Mother during our Tuesday
Adult Education Sessions. This is an 8-week
commitment.
If you are interested in an experience that
is shorter, consider joining us for The Book
of Ruth beginning August 11th (Morning Session 9:45 a.m. -
11:15 a.m.) or (Evening Session 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.). Only a
4-week commitment.
This little Book of Ruth contains four chapters. These chap-
ters tell the story of a family who migrates from Bethlehem in
Israel to Moab during a famine. The husband Elimelech dies in
Moab leaving his wife Naomi with their two sons, Mahlon and
Chilion. The two sons eventually marry Moabite women:
Ruth and Orpah. Subsequently, Naomi's two sons die, leaving
her a widow with two Gentile daughters-in-law. Orpah decides
to remain in Moab, but Ruth accompanies Naomi back to Israel
where they live in Bethlehem. Through an intriguing series of
events, Ruth marries the rich kinsman-redeemer Boaz, and she
gives birth to a son named Obed, who in turn has a son named
Jesse, who becomes the father of David.
The Story can almost be viewed as a theatrical play with the
curtain opening and closing on various scenes. Naomi is the
main character of the first scene; Ruth is center stage in scenes
two and three; Boaz stars in scene four; and scene five is the
joyous conclusion.
Love stories never grow old.
Happy endings always charm us.
Unselfish loyalty, enduring faithfulness,
and loving family bonds grip our hearts
and fill our eyes with tears.
Hope you are able to join us!
God Bless,
Carole Obrokta Director of Religious Education
