My Dear Parishioners,

This 4th of July weekend is a time of parades, politi-

cal speeches, fireworks and backyard barbeques. But most

of all it is a day of celebrating our independence - an inde-

pendence which was won and is maintained by the sacri-

fice of many lives. We are celebrating an independence

that is not absolute. Adam, the first man, thought that he

had absolute independence, and we are still suffering from

the effects of it. Only God has absolute independence.

Our independence is rooted in our dependence on God. We are contin-

gent, dependent beings. An independent creature is an intrinsic impossibility.

That is why the first Commandment is also the greatest Commandment. Only

if we are completely dependent on God can we enjoy real freedom. Either we

are dependent on God or we will be dependent on some creature.

This dependence on God is clearly stated in our Declaration of Independ-

ence. It begins like this: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men

are created equal and that they are endowed by our creator with inalienable

rights..." And it ends: "With a firm reliance on divine providence, we pledge

our lives, our fortunes, and our honor..."

Our nation was founded on belief in God. The president ends his oath of

office by placing his hand on the Bible, the Word of God, and with "So help

me God." In our Pledge of Allegiance we say "One nation, under God." En-

graved on our money is, "In God We Trust." Our congress has a chaplain,

begins each session with a prayer, and provides chaplains for the military.

Our Founding Fathers may have opted for a separation of Church and

State, but not for a separation of God and State. There is no brotherhood of

man without the Fatherhood of God. The division of life into the sacred

and the secular is a false dichotomy. There is not now, there never was and

never will be the truly secular, that is anyone or anything which is not de-

pendent on God. Atheistic capitalism would suffer the same fate as atheistic

communism.

What the Constitution guarantees is not freedom from religion, but free-

dom of religion. Freedom to practice religion. The irony, the contradiction,

is that those who are pushing for freedom from religion are actually pushing

their own religion, which is secular humanism. In secular humanism the su-

preme being is man - greedy, lustful, proud man. But which man? There are

more than seven billion of them in the world, each claiming to be independ-

ent. These "supreme beings" are the creators, and they are creating rugged

individualism, corruption, addictions, war, and terrorism. There is nothing

as inhuman as secular humanism.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the illusion that we were absolutely independent went

down in smoke and ashes with the Twin Towers. On that day, we fell to our

knees and asked God for help. And in so doing, realized how far we have

wandered from God and from the convictions of our Founding Fathers. I sug-

gest that those of us, especially who can recall that tragic day in American

history, allow it to serve as an inspiration, if not a vivid reminder, to do all

we can through prayer, conversation, voting, etc., to bring our country back

to its dependence on God. It is the best birthday gift we can give our coun-

try.

May God Bless You,

Mark 6: 7-13 When Jesus sent out the Twelve in Mark’s

Gospel, He didn’t equip them with very much,

just a walking stick, the clothes on their back,

and a pair of sandals. For the rest they had to

depend on God. Yet they had great success on

their mission. Perhaps one lesson we can learn

is dependence on God. Let us listen to God’s

July 2015:

Mother, Teacher, Family:

The Nature and Role of

the Church The Church has institu-

tional forms because she

must work in the world. But

that does not exhaust the

essence. The Church is the

Bride of Christ, a “she,” not an “it.”

In the words of Saint John XXIII, “she is our

mother and teacher, our comforter and guide, our

family of faith.” Even when her people and lead-

ers sin, we still need the Church’s wisdom, Sacra-

ments, support and proclamation of the truth, be-

cause she is the body of Jesus Himself in the

world; the family of God’s people writ large.

Food Gift Cards Needed I have been getting requests for food and gas gift cards

over summer months for those in need. Cards can be purchased in

the parish office and left in the Parish Nurse Mailbox. Due to the

shortage in our food pantries there has been more requests. The

food collected on Sunday goes to Jesus Focus food pantry where

people are being directed. Thank you for your generosity.

50th Anniversary

Commemorative Book Now that our 50th Anniversary year is over,

with all of its successful and joyous monthly

celebrations, we come to the last and perhaps

greatest task: compiling a commemorative

book that will help us to recall these memories

for years to come. It will also share the interest-

ing history that has shaped us into the vibrant

community of faith that we are.

A committee of parishioners is compiling,

writing and editing what will be a 50th Anni-

versary, limited edition, keepsake book. The

committee envisions a book worthy of display

in your home, on the coffee table, or as the per-

fect Christmas gift.

The book will contain over 100 pages of his-

tory, stories, pictures and personal testimonials

from former priests, religious, etc., that will

help us to cherish and preserve the memories of

50 years for generations to come. The book will

be available for purchase in mid-November,

2015, if not sooner.

The anniversary committee would like to

invite as many parishioners as possible to be a

part of this historical record. A special section

of the book will contain a listing of the names

of book patrons, living and deceased. A dona-

tion of $30 for a single line listing in this sec-

tion will also entitle the donor to a free copy.

Below you will find a sample form to assist

you in making a listing in this special section.

We ask that you complete the form and attach it

to your donation, and drop it off at the Rectory

as soon as possible.

Campaign for Human Development

Collection July 11-12 Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In Brazil a few years ago, Pope Francis stood in the midst of a

shantytown's poor and appealed to all people of good will: "Never

tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity.

... The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it

treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their

poverty?"

Sadly, the backdrop for those words from our Holy Father is not

unlike some neighborhoods here in our own city and surrounding

region. Many people are doing better economically than they were a

few years ago, but too many others have been left out of the recov-

ery. It is all too easy to attribute their situation to some personal

failing, which ignores the reality of systemic poverty.

As Catholics we are called to do whatever we can to ensure that

all people have the opportunity to live in conditions worthy of hu-

man beings. For over four decades, the Catholic Campaign for

Human Development (CCHD) has demonstrated the Church's

solidarity with the poor, supporting community organizations that

work to ease poverty and promote human development. What

makes this effort special is that these community groups engage the

poor to actively participate in identifying their problems and work-

ing collaboratively to find effective solutions. Some projects have a

significant Catholic presence among their leadership and member-

ship, and many are collaborative ventures involving individuals of

all faiths working together toward common goals. All CCHD fund-

ing is contingent on an organization's activities being consistent

with Catholic moral teaching.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops sponsors an annual

collection to support the Church's efforts to reduce poverty through

the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the

Archdiocese of Philadelphia, this collection will take place on the

weekend of July 11 and 12, 2015. Your donations will support anti-

poverty projects in communities across the country and right here in

our own region. To learn more about the good work that CCHD

funds, visit the USCCB website at: www.povertyusa.org.

With 40 million Americans still living in poverty, your contribu-

tion to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is more

important than ever. With your help, our brothers and sisters have a

better chance of achieving the dignity of self-reliance in their pur-

suit of a better future for themselves, their families, and their com-

munities. On their behalf, I thank you for your generosity and ask

God's blessing upon you for your response to this year's appeal.

Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,

Dear Parishioners,

A theologian once said, "We are to be

different because Christ is in us. The world is

to be different because we are in it." As we

celebrate Fourth of July weekend - our na-

tion's Independence Day, I am reminded of

those words. I invite you to ponder this pray-

er, and think of some of the particular ways our world might be

different because YOU are in it!

Lord, we give you thanks for the blessings

of freedom. May we learn to use our freedoms

to be servants to our neighbors.

We give you thanks for the blessing of justice.

May our own actions - and the actions of our nation -

facilitate justice for all.

Lord, come to the aid of nations and leaders

who need your guidance.

Come to the aid of those standing in harm's way.

Make us mindful of the sacrifices of our military

and their families. Make us mindful of ways

that we can support them in their service.

Strengthen us in faith and calm the fears within us.

Send peace in our time, peace for our hearts,

peace for our land, peace for all the world,

peace that abides as we abide in you.

For you are God alone, blessed above all others,

from whom comes the only peace that endures.

Truth be told, we ARE different because Christ is in us.

Now may the world be different because we are in it. Let us

keep each other in prayer.

God Bless,

Casserole Program for

Saint John’s Hospice I know the summer is a

need and less fortunate than us.

roles to keep their wonderful

program up and running. Won’t you join us as we try to

Going on Vacation?

Find a Mass Online! Taking a trip this summer

doesn’t mean that you have to

take a vacation from worship.

Whether you are down the

shore or anywhere around the

world, making Sunday Mass a

part of your vacation planning is as easy as your computer or

phone. Operated with the cooperation of the United States

Conference of Catholic Bishops and with the encouragement

of the Vatican, www.masstimes.org will help you to find

Catholic churches and Mass schedules by city, state,

zip code or country. You can also get information by

calling 1-858-207-6277 and providing either the zip

code or phone number of the desired U.S. location.

Come to the Chapel ASAP (Always Stop And Pray)

Father Raymond T. Gawronski, S.J. wrote:

“Mystics throughout history have experienced tremen-

dous graces in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. And so

have ordinary people, the eyes of whose hearts are opened by

faith.

Recently, a friend told me he found himself in one of the peri-

odic bouts of restlessness we all, I suppose, experience. "Ah,"

he thought, "if only I were in a hermitage or a monastery, re-

moved from the pressures of worldly life, how close I could be

again to the Lord!" Yet one morning as he said Mass, his heart

heard an admonition, as from the Host on the altar, saying: "I

am right here and you have no need to go anywhere else." In-

credible.

I sometimes ask my students where they can find Jesus

Christ. True to the radical humanism of our day, they like to

point to themselves, or point to other people. Well, yes, I say, in

a way that is true. "But," I ask, "if you wanted to be with Christ

directly, personally: if you wanted to pour out your heart to

Him-just you and He-if you wanted to adore Him Who is God

made man, where would you go?" Eventually, one hand is

sheepishly raised in the classroom and a witnessing voice qui-

etly says, "He is in the tabernacle in church."

He is as much present in the tabernacle near our homes as

He is at the Vatican, or Jerusalem, at Lourdes, Fatima or any

other holy place to which people travel. In fact, no place on

earth is more holy than the tabernacle in our local sanctuary.”

We invite you to spend some quiet time with our Lord and

thank Him and praise Him for all the blessings and graces He

sends you and ask for those special intentions and needs close

to your heart. Please stop by and visit Jesus in our perpetual

adoration chapel adjacent to the parish offices in the St.

Katharine Drexel Center. The chapel is open 24 hours every

day and at any time of the day or night, you can come to the

chapel and Jesus is there…. waiting for You!

tact Debbie & Sean McDermott at 215-504-9897 or e-mail us
