Holy Cross Statement of Welcome

Holy Cross is a Christ-centered community in the Lutheran tradition (ELCA). We believe all people are created in God’s image. We are passionate about the radical hospitality that Jesus showed all people. We are committed to being a community of that same kind of hospitality. We welcome all people to our life and ministry together… …in worship, at the font, at the table and in fellowship, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age or any other category society uses to distinguish between people. We are Holy Cross and you are welcome here.

There is no longer Jew nor Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

hhav Summer Camp Experience 8/10-8/13; Grades 2-7

Room for a few campers and LOTS of helping hands

Registration - Registration continues for this year’s camp. We current-ly have 10 slots open and a few scholarships remaining. Registration closes on July 31 or when we reach capacity, whichever comes first. Helping hands – A successful camp requires lots of help! If you can

give us a hand, please contact either Cindy Channey in the office or Ellen Batkie (248-497-1451 or [email protected]). Kitchen Crew – Our Kitchen Captain, Retha Moore, needs lots of help. Feeding 100 campers and faculty midmorning snack and lunch is a big part of our day. The crew is on task from 9:45 AM to 1:30 PM, but we can use whatever sliver of time you can share. Art Crew – Our Art Champions, Sue Scherbarth and Joan Onkka, can use extra hands to help the campers with their art projects. The time slot runs from 12:30 to 3:00.

Registration/Welcome desk – Monday 8/10 is a high energy start to camp as parents and campers arrive for their first day. We need a few folks to help make that initial registration fun for all involved. The time slot runs from 8:30-9:15 that day only. Closing Reception – Thursday evening 8/13 after our closing program. We need a Reception Wizard and Team to pull together a light refreshment reception. This celebra-tory event is an extremely important afterglow capping off our experience.

Come join us any day - We love to share camp with observers. The best time to come is at 9 AM for morning prayer in the sanctuary. Please come to the closing program on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 PM. The campers will share part of what they learned during the four days of camp. It’s more fun if we have a full sanctuary!

“Read ‘n Ring” receives Editor’s Choice Award

Following summer camp last year, Michael Burkhardt put the finishing touches on a book

he wrote to share some of the techniques developed for the hearts, hands and voices Fi-

ne Arts Program. We are extremely excited that the music publisher, JW Pepper, selected “Read ‘n Ring” for its prestigious Editor’s Choice Award. It’s wonderful that the work being done through the HHAV program is getting recognition in education circles! The description below is from the music catalogue. A special note about the piece “Debbie’s Song” - this is a piece Michael wrote in memory of our own Debbie Frank.

“This revolutionary approach to teaching music literacy with handbells or handchimes takes the ringer from rote and chord playing to reading part scores and the full grand staff! Written as a sequential music education method, Read 'n' Ring contains arrangements with separate two- and three-octave settings alongside classroom-tested exercises to develop note-reading skills and reinforce basic musical concepts. Teaching titles include: Debbie's Song; A Spring Carol; New World Symphony, Movement 2 (Dvorak); "Surprise" Symphony No. 94, Movement 2 (Haydn); Simple Gifts; Eine kleine Nachtmusik; Movement 2 (Mozart), and Symphony No. 7, Movement 2 (Beethoven).”

One child, one mentor, one hour per week!

It's not too early to begin thinking about next fall! For the past eight years, Holy Cross has been part of a mentoring program with our neighborhood school, Coolidge Elementary, impacting the lives of literally hundreds of children. Kids Hope is a one on one mentoring program in which each volunteer is paired up with one at risk child. Volunteers spend one hour each week working with a child who is struggling emotionally, socially or academically. Knowing that one caring adult is there just for him/her eve-

ry week has a huge impact on that child.

Before you begin, you will be given training and will also receive support throughout the school year. You will spend the hour playing, reading, working and talking with your child. Mainly you will spend the hour just being his friend. You and the teacher will agree on a time each week that is convenient for both of you.

There are many wonderful people at Holy Cross who have participated in this program, some for several years and they are an excellent support system. Each mentor also has a prayer partner who spends time praying for him and his child. We hope some of you will consider being part of this special ministry next school year.

Cindy Swift and Diane Nichols, Co-Directors

Back-Pack Ministry Shopping for school supplies is just around the corner!

The boys at the Methodist Children's Home Society will be in need of a school supply filled backpack again this year. The backpacks should be available for pick-up in the Narthex, the end of July. All filled backpacks need to be returned to the church by the last Sunday of August.

As summer swings into high gear, our 6.1.2 youth are going to enjoy some man-made fun and then enjoy some of the great outdoors!

July 7th they are heading to Cedar Point for a day of thrills. Upon their return they will have a few days to pack before de-parting on July 10th for a weekend of camping and canoeing on the AuSable River, outside of Gaylord.

Building Use

As you may have noticed, we have a very busy building! Sometimes it is like a puzzle to fit the many, ex-citing activities into our space. If you would like to use a room in the building, it would be very helpful if you would check with Cindy in the office and her calendar before making a firm commitment to avoid conflicts. This can be done by email, office1@holycrosslivonia, or phone, 734-427-1414.

As we prepare to embark on the call process…

“You are on a journey to select a new pastor, spiritual leader and friend. You have a wonderful opportunity to share in the gifts of God and help guide your congregation in renewing its ministry and mission. You will experience the presence of God and the people of God in new and exciting ways. You will be a partner in glimpsing a new vision of mission in the congregation and community. The prayers of your congrega-tion, neighboring congregations and the Synod staff will carry you. It will be a wondrous experience as you work in the Spirit and find new joy in your ministry together.” Eleanore L. Feucht Sudbrock

Once the Church Council and Synod determine the preliminary work leading up to the call process is complete, a number of things will kick into place. The first step is to prayerfully identify who will serve on the Call Committee. We will be looking for six individuals representing a cross-section of our community who feel called to participate in this important process. The Call Committee’s first task is to take time to gel and spend fertile time discerning where God is leading Holy Cross. This discernment phase will be done in consultation with the entire worship community as we work together to see God’s hand in our path. Once we have insight regarding mission and direction, the next major task is to draft our Ministry Site Profile. This is the document that describes to potential candidates the vision coming out this discernment process and what kind of leader will best fit not only who/what we are now but who/what we may become. Although the temptation is to be impatient, it is vitally important to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us. That requires us to respect God’s timeline rather than our own. Great things are ahead of us and this community is uniquely equipped to make a difference for the sake of the kingdom. We ask each and everyone of you to engage in prayer as we embark on this next phase of our journey together. Yours in Christ, Andy Heise, President
