This group has done and continues to do an outstanding job on your behalf! Through it all, worship assistants, talented musicians, altar guild, greeters, ushers, sound techs, coffee hosts, counters, teachers and building and grounds folks (including so many of you helped get the parsonage ready for the new pastor) have served faithfully. Service to the broader community through “GWOH,” Home & Hope and your long-standing food/ clothing drives have continued strong through the efforts of your social justice team and the entire congregation. So as we enter the new program year – one your new pastor will join in progress! – may we thank God for the blessings HTLC has received and given. And may the Holy Spirit continue to bless, challenge, inspire and gift Holy Trinity to make the love of Christ visible on the Peninsula and beyond. Pr. Lori Eickmann

Interim Pastor’s Message

Welcome to fall and the new program year at Holy Trinity!

I began as your interim pastor at the end of September last year, and your call committee hopes to recommend a new pastor by the end of this year. In between,

this congregation has shown me what it looks like to remain focused on being church in a time of transition.

Your church council heard at the August meeting that giving has remained steady since Pr. Christian left; the deficit you are experiencing has to do with increased health insurance costs. And while attendance has been low during the summer (which is typical), it is expected to closely match last year’s level now that school has started. See FAQ on page 3 for the figures.

As we kick off the new program year, let’s celebrate HTLC’s faithful service! May you be buoyed by the forward motion:

• Three volunteers have been trained for a new lay Eucharist/ visitation ministry to bring Holy Communion to homebound members starting this fall.

• You helped three local families get into permanent housing by offering the parsonage as transitional housing, with the help of Home & Hope. In addition, HTLC will help upgrade the Home & Hope facility with a Thrivent Action Team as part of “Gods Work, Our Hands” on Sept. 10. And there’s more: Home & Hope families will be hosted here at Holy Trinity again for a week beginning Sept. 11. (More info on page 4.)

• Volunteers have begun teaching Sunday school, and confirmation will begin soon with the help of volunteers and mentors.

• The Worship & Music team found a gifted substitute organist who served for several months, and now are looking for another to serve until early next year.

• Max and Hannah joined the ranks of acolytes.

• Two new members joined HTLC.

• The parking lot entrance sign will be dedicated Sept. 18.

• More chances for folks to connect beyond Sunday mornings are being offered.

• You all approved a welcome statement, and more thought is being given to tangible ways to live out that statement.

• And particularly notable to the transitional time: your call committee gathered input from all of you, wrote a focused Ministry Site Profile, and is just finishing the first round of pastoral candidate interviews.

Service to the broader community through “GWOH,” Home & Hope and your long-standing food/clothing drives have continued strong through the efforts of your social justice team and the entire congregation.

So as we enter the new program year – one your new pastor will join in progress! – may we thank God for the blessings HTLC has received and given. And may the Holy Spirit continue to bless, challenge, inspire and gift Holy Trinity to make the love of Christ visible on the Peninsula and beyond.

Parking Lot Sign Dedication

Join the congregation

after service September 18 for a dedication of the new parking lot

sign. Three men, over the last four decades,

have devoted countless time and energy in keeping the

church facilities in good repair. All three, in their

passing, named the Holy Trinity Building Fund in their estate or memorials. A portion of the sign and landscape funding came from

those funds.

Grateful appreciation goes to:Bob Carlson, Larry Pogreba & Ray Trine

HTLC Dinner Groups are back!

Please add your name to the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Let us know if

you are coming to the potluck on Sunday, September 18, 5:30 pm in Beilstein Hall, or if you want to participate but can't attend

the potluck. Either way, we are happy to have you join us.

For questions, call Barbara Richards at 650-255-5218.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is giving down significantly since Pastor Christian left?

The Council received a comparison of giving history January – July over a multi-year period. The

comparison showed that:• between Pr. Kim and Pr. Dan there was a 5% decline in giving; • between Pr. Dan and Pr. Christian a 6% decline; • between Pr. Christian and present (July 31) a 1% decline.

This indicates that giving is at about the same level as last year, but the 2016 budget is greater and

increased health insurance cost is creating the current budget deficit.

Is attendance down significantly since Pastor. Christian left?

Records indicate the average attendance in 2015 was 66 and 2016 to date the average is 57. It is anticipated that attendance will increase now that school has resumed and raise the average to

the low 60’s.

Call Committee News

The Call Committee has entered an exciting next phase of the call process when we begin screening candidates. We met with a representative of the Bishop’s office on July 24 to receive a list of candidates. The remainder of the summer will be spent screening candidates to establish which ones may fit best with God’s mission for Holy Trinity. In respect for the candidates’ privacy, please be aware that the Call Committee cannot share information regarding candidates or their status.

The Call Committee has estimated an approximate timeline for the call process in 2016:• January: six small group meetings held with congregation to clarify core values• February: Pastor Lori conducted HTLC timeline exercise to understand our heritage • March: on-line survey with congregation to prioritize gifts for ministry• March 15: joint Call Committee/Council review of draft Ministry Site Profile (MSP)• April: reviewed draft Ministry Site Profile with Bishop’s office• May: Council approved MSP and Call Committee submitted completed MSP to ELCA• July: Bishop’s office screens candidates and provides candidate names to Call Committee• August: Call Committee screens candidates by Skype• September: Second round of interviews on-site.

Please keep the Call Committee in your prayers as we work through the process of calling a new pastor.

Book Club Brunch Sunday, September 18th @ 1:00 pm

@ the home of Pamela Bohlmann

Make sure to RSVP/Sign up in the Breezeway!

Join us as we discuss this harrowing and heartbreaking story of life, love, and effects of trauma and oppression on a rural segregated southern community. The language and

potent imagery that grabbed Oprah is a welcome counterpoint to the brutality of the events depicted in the novel. Ruby isn't an easy read – but its message and its artistry

make it a compelling and vital one. There is still time to pickup a copy. It is a fast read. Here are just a few of the questions we will discuss: How did Ruby’s story change the way you view the world? What does the novel show us about the nature of trauma and the

power of compassion? Celia copes with tragedy by putting her world in strict order, from her family life to her church life. But Ruby becomes lost to disorder. What accounts for their different approaches to emotional pain?

What role does Christianity play in Liberty? Does faith enhance or hinder Celia and her congregation in their attempts to heal Ruby? What does Ephram’s baptism mean to him? Contact Pamela for more information.

Let’s Go Ride a Bike

Sunday, September 25th from 12 noon to 3pm

or recumbent and join in an afternoon roll. We will meet/park

at the Canada Rd/Highway 92 entrance at 12:00.

Make sure to sign-up in the breezeway!

Ongoing Home & Hope PartnershipFor many years Holy Trinity has partnered with Home & Hope to provide one week of housing for families in Beilstein Hall, provide dinner nightly, and get to know the families. The week of September 11 we will have families at Holy Trinity in Beilstein Hall. How can you help?

• Sign up with John Schornstein to: prepare dinner one evening; spend the night as host; spend an evening with families (help with homework, play games, sing songs, etc.); assist Sept 18 to remove tents and put supplies away.

• Sign up with Barbara Padilla to assist during “God’s work, Our hands” day on Saturday, September 10 by: organizing bedding and supplies; installing new batteries in smoke alarms; shopping for supplies / set up kitchen with food/supplies; sign up to launder linens September 18.

Revitalize Home & Hope’s Burlingame Facility - Be part of a Thrivent Action Team

As part of “God’s work, Our hands” day on Sept 10, HTLC will host a Thrivent Action Team to go to the Burlingame facility to help refresh the rooms. Sign up with Bob Beuthel to: install baseboard molding; install new cabinet locks; steam clean floors; assemble IKEA type furniture; move old furniture to the Habitat Restore; other misc. tasks.

The first 15 to sign up will receive a Thrivent Action Team t-shirt!

How can I make a difference?

Holy Trinity has supported Home & Hope by hosting families for a week each year in Beilstein Hall. The Home & Hope families stay in area churches

in the evenings, then have the opportunity to be at the Home & Hope Burlingame facility during the day where they can do laundry, shower, use the computer or just relax. In 2015/16 we extended our partnership by

having three families live in the parsonage as they transitioned from Home & Hope assistance to their independent housing. Now HTLC is embarking on

a new community outreach service to support this partnership. Council has allocated up to $7,000 from the Spring Forth benevolence fund to assist renovating the Burlingame facility. With generous donations of time, talent and resources significant work will

transform the facility into a more pleasant “home” for the families: Rossi Painting will repaint (reducing cost by 40%); Leah Bauer, Sr. Interior Designer for HDR, will reconfigure Home & Hope space better to meet program’s

needs; Webb Builders will donate services to remodel/upgrade the two bathrooms.

How can you participate and make a difference? Sign up in the

breezeway to participate in “God’s work, Our hand’s.” on September 10th and/or for activities the week of September 11.

NEWS about PLTS, Support Your Local Seminary!

For years there have been formal and informal conversations about whether the current site of Pacific Lutheran

Theological Seminary (2770 Marin Ave, Berkeley) best serves the preparation of Lutheran church leaders in this time of change within the church and the world. Out of this mission imperative, and with the support of the PLTS

Advisory Board, the Board of Regents has decided to relocate PLTS to downtown Berkeley in 2017.

With this move, PLTS would be closer to its Graduate Theological Union partners, to social and civic life, and to public transportation (downtown BART station). It will allow the PLTS community to be not only in Berkeley but

also of Berkeley.

The property being pursued is on the 2nd floor of 2000 Center Street – a four-story building also occupied by

Berkeley City College and UC Berkeley Haas School of Business’s Center for Executive Education. The terms of the lease and renovation plans are expected to be reached soon, so PLTS can be fully relocated by summer 2017.

PLTS has been at the top of Marin Ave for 67 years. If you have not had the chance to see the site’s Spanish-style buildings, eucalyptus trees and deer, Chapel of the Cross and the views of San Francisco Bay – all of which have

served in forming generations of church leaders – visit soon. And please consider making a donation to PLTS, our local seminary, so that it can continue to raise up leaders for the 21st Century church.

The surprise party thrown by Amy Beuthel for the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Bob and Diane Beuthel.

A Big Thank YouHow do we say “Thank you” . . . for the love and support you showed in helping us celebrate our 50th anniversary? Amy shared how you kept the secret of surprising us for weeks; that explains why some of you were kindly avoiding engaging us in conversation!!! Your cards, good wishes, hugs, helping hands and laughter created some very special memories and, as is a Holy Trinity tradition, the food was bountiful and delicious. Of course the very special beer brewed and served by Lance and Eric Webb added the perfect touch to a true Lutheran celebration!

When Holy Trinity lists its many attributes, it now must include the admirable gift of secret-keeping. Hey, Greg, is it too late for the Call Committee to add that to the Holy Trinity profile?

We are grateful for each of you and thank God for including you in our many blessings,

Bob and Diane
