Country Conquers CancerWhat do you do when a friend is in need? Some bury their heads in the sand. Some step up and do what they can. Some others fire up, get motivated and make things happen.

There is no better proof of what a community can do when it comes together, than the Country Conquers Cancer event held at The Zoo in January this year. When Brisbane musician Byron Short received the news of fellow artist and friend Garry R Wood’s cancer, he got to work. Over twenty artists in the country and Americana community converged on the stage at The Zoo on 28th January, and put on a show anyone would be proud of.

Even the format of the event was innovative. With The Sunset Junkies playing house band duties, every artist was able to get up and play with minimal fuss and maximum impact. This meant a night full of practically uninterrupted music of an amazing calibre for the listening audience. Each act played an original and a cover in a great balance to suit a whole host of musical tastes. Top this all off with a finale which saw all the musical acts come together on stage, and the night was a great showcase of local talent at its core.

The community values of this event were the jewel in its musical crown. For all of these musicians to come together, and use their immense talents as a show of solidarity against “The Big C” was a testament to their spirit. For everyone to rally and join forces in the raising of much needed funds for both a fellow musician and cancer research in Australia was a success in itself.

Organiser of the event, Byron Short gives much thanks and praise to the iconic Brisbane venue The Zoo for their assistance and hosting of the Country Conquers Cancer event. Thanks also go to everyone who got involved and made it a success. Of course, the event would not have even happened without the great ideas, effort and community spirit of Byron himself. Kudos to him from Rimshot Magazine.

SoundboardElbury

Elbury are a band with an actively beating community heart. Their laid-back melodic tunes are the polar opposite to their engaged and motivated work ethic. They are a band who actively combines great music with a desire to help.

Primarily, the band see their community role as one of entertainers. Playing music is only the first step. The other piece of the puzzle is to engage and entertain the audience, lest they switch off. Elbury are also very conscious of the messages they convey with their songs. They avoid the cliché and overly simplistic in preference for the lyrically and musically challenging and interesting.

Interestingly, Elbury attracted an older demographic in their early days. While a younger audience now seems to be engaging with the band, their sound attracted the 35-50 age range to begin with.

As musicians, Elbury have a very strong community spirit. A significant proportion of their shows are in aid of charities of fundraisers, often playing for free in support. Each of the members also have their own level of community involvement, whether inside or apart from work. They also support funding for worthy causes wherever they are able.

Elbury are a band committed to playing originals. Having to play lengthy shows has meant the addition of some covers to fill out the set. They find, however, their own material is what generates most interest.

Hard work is no stranger to the band. They play gigs almost weekly, including markets and smaller cafes. An appreciative audience is all they really need to play. They enjoy smaller venues which lend themselves to the acoustic character of the music. They have also been involved with the AMRAP community radio distribution program which has made some good headway on community radio across the country.

ISSUE 12 - FEBRUARY 2016 PAGE 11

Elbury creatively desrcribe Australia’s live music scene as “A bit bi-polar...”. While there is clearly a lack of venues, and difficulties in attracting audiences to listen to local and unknown bands, the quality of music at a local and national level is high. “We’re always stumbling across debut EPs that blow us away! Have a listen to Cornerstone by Malo Zima or Follow the Embers by Folklore, for a start!”

The band see regional touring as key to bringing more live music to those areas. While they have made connections with regional community radio, It’s important to provide live shows to build

on that exposure. The expansion and promotion of available grant programs would make this a possibiity for more Australian bands.

For Elbury, who simply love to play, there is no better thanks than an appreciative and entertained audience. The organisers of the many charity and community events they play are always very positive. It is the many communities they help with their strong sense of giving, who will be all the better for it.

MunchkinGamerverseMunchkin is to gaming what Roald Dahl is to children’s novels. Its beautifully twisted humour is equalled by its beautiful illustrations, creating a game which entertains on several levels. Whether you’re a playing to win type who likes to revel in the strategy, someone who likes a cheeky laugh with entertining gameplay, or you just like looking at pretty pictures, you can get on board (pun intended-except there’s no board) with this game.

Written by Steve Jackson, with illustrations by John Kovalic, the goal of the game is simply to reach level 10. Levels are gained by successfully fighting monsters, using various armour and bonuses gained throughout the game, and influenced by a player’s race and class. Of course, while this happens, players curse and trip each other up at every opportunity so their opponents dont’ level up before them. Beware though, you may just need that player to help you out on a particularly vicious monster.

Demographic - Munchkin is definitely a game for those with a sense of humour. A grasp of innuendo comes in handy too. It’s not over the top with debauchery though, so certainly suitable for children, as long as they have good reading skills to read the cards and subsequent instructions.

Group Size - The bigger the better with this game when it comes to number of players. Having said that, any number will do really. You could even play solo if you’re that way inclined.

Difficulty - Munchkin is not an overly complicated game. Newbies to the gaming world could certainly grasp it fairly quickly. Those with prior knowledge of the idea of races, classes, armour, heroes and monsters will slide right on in.

Nerd Level - Munchkin is definitely a non-nerd game. Those with no nerd-cred may miss the nuances of a few cards here and there, but it’s a sense of humour which is much more important for the enjoyment of this game.
