Friday 30th March 2018
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I am sure this four day week is appreciated by all who
have had a busy 1st term so far. Teachers, students and
parents have been flat out and it is wonderful to be
able to press pause and enjoy the long weekend
ahead.
This has been the week of the High School musical,
Oklahoma. It played to appreciative audiences on
both Wednesday and Thursday at NIDA. The student
performances were incredible and my thanks to the
very creative Dean Hattingh for producing the show.
The music performed by the Reddam orchestra that
accompanied the performers elevated and en-
hanced the production to that of a professional show.
Congratulations and thanks to Mr Hattingh, Mrs Liz
Collier, Dr McGregor, Mr and Mrs Bortolotti and their
magnificent group of helpers for exceeding all expec-
tations with such a brilliant production. The hard work
appears to be worth it when one hears how much the
students enjoyed being part of the cast.
The culmination of the Year 10 Drama curriculum for
the term, where they were studying Children’s Theatre,
saw them performing to Year 1 and Year 2 audiences.
The Year 10s loved having them as an audience.
It is my belief that if you captivate young children’s im-
aginations with a performance then you are a great
actor. These Year 1 and Year 2’s were spell bound and
mesmerized. Well done Year 10 Drama students.

Last weekend the Rugby 10’s competition at Grammar
kicked off the winter sports season. Our U16 team did
remarkably well winning all of their games until the final.
During the day they played St Pius C and Sydney
Grammar B winning easily and then played Sydney
Grammar A team as they progressed, winning six tries
to three before facing off against St Pius A team in the
final. Our team was 3-2 down when the game was
called off due to an injury to Connor, who is today re-
covering from surgery after having broken his tibia. Well
done to the rugby boys and I wish Connor a speedy
recovery.
Congratulations to the Reddam tennis teams on their
wins in the Northern Suburbs Schools Tennis Champion-
ships. Reddam had a great season with 10 teams play-
ing each Saturday. Five of our teams made the Finals
with three of them taking out the Championships.
More student achievements this week include:
The best ever results for our students at the Rostrum
Voice of Youth Competition. All our students were well
prepared with very interesting and original speeches
and were a credit to our school. Rose Chachko and
Aiden Katz both were excellent in their respective
heats. Well done to Aidan Ruvinsky and Daniela
Christelis who were both awarded 2nd place in their
respective heats and a huge congratulations to Zoe
Gross, Emily Wang and Liam Wright who each won
their heat and now progress to the Regional Finals in
May. This is an outstanding achievement and we wish
them all the best for the next round of competition.
Alisa Tyshchenko took part in the Roberta Nutt School
Competition Under 18 Girls Foil on the weekend where
she once again won the gold medal. Congratulations
Alisa.
Joshua Devine recently
competed at the ACT In-
ternationals Judo Champi-
onships where he came
2nd, winning the Silver
medal for his age group
and weight division. This
tournament is one of the
State selection competi-
tions for the NSW State
Squad team this year.
Well done Josh.
A few weeks ago I report-
ed that Angel Cody had
her photo selected as one of the finalists in the under
18’s photography competition, Tell me Ten words (Dis
moi dix mots), organised by the Alliance Française. To-
day I am pleased to announce that at the Award cer-
emony last Thursday at the Canadian Embassy, Cody’s
work was selected as the winning entrant. She used a
photo she had taken at school and she chose the
word for ‘whisper softly’ (susurrer) and did a description
(in English) as to why her photo represented that word.
@REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 18, Issue 9 Friday 30th March 2018 Page 3
She won a $400 voucher to attend a French course at
Alliance Française and a $100 voucher for Abbey
Bookshop, plus many different chocolates. Congratula-
tions Cody, we are very proud of your achievement.
Miles Davis, as a result of his perfor-
mance in the recent U18 Hockey
Nationals, was selected in the Aus-
tralian Team to play in the Youth
Olympics Qualifying Tournament.
This will be held in Port Moresby in
the April holidays, with the aim of
the team qualifying for the Youth
Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires,
Argentina in October this year.
Interestingly the format for the
Youth Olympics is 5 a-side hockey,
which means they have only select-
ed 9 players from all over Australia
with players eligible up to and including 18 years of
age (although Miles is still 16!) He was also selected in
the U21 NSW squad. This is on top of his already an-
nounced U16 Tour to South Africa with the Australian
Schoolboys Hockey team. Miles will be doing a lot of
travelling this year to play hockey. Congratulations
Miles.
I wish all our Jewish families Chag Sameach and our
Christian families a very Happy Easter. I hope all Red-
dam families have a lovely long weekend that is filled
with love and happiness.
Have a good week,
Dave Pitcairn
YEAR 11 VISUAL ART
Year 11 have continued their investigation of functional
vs non-functional objects with the idea of ‘ready-
made’ and found objects coming together in a new
context to create new meanings. The students have
recontextualised everyday objects in the attempt to rid
them of their original function, thus labelling them “out
of order”.
