He awarded 3rd Place to Liam Wright (Trumpet), 2nd Place to Lucy Hemner-Cwirn (Flute) and 1st Place went to Yoni Herz (Alto Saxophone). The Senior Section was small but elite. Lucas Leung per- formed one of his HSC works and Adam Petrovic per- formed his solo improvisations in Caravan by Duke Elling- ton. Both performances were blistering. Phil awarded 2nd Place to Adam and 1st Place to Lucas.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As you can imagine I get a host of emails on a daily ba-sis. When I received the one included below, it made my week.

―It is convenient and lazy to place the blame for many of

society's ills - real or imagined - on the shoulders of the young. Like most people, I am guilty, at times, of think-ing ...that would never have happened when I was a kid… conveniently forgetting that, of course, regrettable

things did happen when I was a kid and that the majority of people, regardless of age or any other definition, are decent, respectful and caring. I'm sure you get your share of complaints concerning your students but I would like to share an uplifting experience I witnessed this morn-ing.

Random acts of kindness are what make the world a better place and this is a message that I have been shar-ing with students. I once more reinforced the importance of being a respectful, positive member of the community by sharing this letter in assembly. Congratulations to the student concerned.

The Year 12 Executive organised a Social for the Prefects

from other schools. They hosted the event on the roof-

top at Woollahra on Thursday afternoon and enjoyed

the most magnificent sunset while Mr. Francis put them

through a Trivia competition. This was great fun for all

and the ice was well and truly broken by the time they

shared a dinner and the informal conversations that en-

sued.

Twenty of our students attended the AICES rugby trials

on Wednesday in the U16 and U18 divisions. Congratula-

tions to Connor Garratt and Mitch McKay for their inclu-

sion in the U16 side and to Jimmy Flaherty, Tate Kemeny,

Toby Fox and Hudson Berry for making the 1st XV. Con-

gratulations on this achievement and good luck in the

next round.

Toby and Hudson were also selected for CIS Touch Foot-

ball Team: incredible!

Congratulations also go to Fox Bengtsson who has

gained selection for the CIS Football (Soccer) Team.

What great news from the Sports Department.

On Monday the Annual HSC Visual Art Showcase will be

available for all to view from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. The

twenty eight students‘ works are impressive and any stu-

dents who are considering Art as a subject should make

the effort to attend to see the standard that can be

achieved.

Have a great week,

Dave Pitcairn.

REDDAM HOUSE CHESS

Last Friday, and every Friday this term, a group of brave

and dedicated year 7 students have played the NSW

JCL Eastern Conference inter-school chess competition.

Round 3 was an away game and so after a week of

long days, the sky about to burst, we traveled to the

Scots College, a school that has won this competition

many times in the past. We were surely to face a chal-

lenge today. I was nervous. The team on the other hand;

Jonathan Herz, Rhys Leong, Rachel Philips and for the first

time this year Gabriel Stafford were full of pride and de-

termination; chatty to a fault and ready to compete.

Upon arrival, the clouds had opened and rain began to

fall. We made our way towards our venue and for better

or worse, came face to face with Vladimir Feldman, a

chess master who had coached some of our players in

past years and helped us set up the Chess Team at the

start of the year. Did they know our secrets? Had he giv-

en away our strategies? There was nothing we could do

either way and so brave face the 4 of them stepped in,

shook hands with their opponents and began to play.

We had lost both previous rounds and were desperate

for a win to keep our team's chances to make the finals

alive.

"Good Game." I heard Yoni (Jonathan) say. I looked at

their board. He had Won. In a savage attack, Yoni had

pinned the opponents King between his two Horses and

his Queen. Check mate. 1-0 to us. I could barely control

my pleasure when moments later I was asked to leave

the room. Apparently one of the Scots players had been

concerned about my presence and so I was forced to

watch the rest of the games from behind the glass. No

matter. Shortly after Rhys smashed his opponent as well

to solidify our second Win of the day. 2-0 to us. In a hard

fought match Gabriel's was the 3rd game to end though

not in our favor. Lulled into a false sense of security, the

score was now 2-1.

It was at least 10 minutes then, untill Rachel's game end-

ed. A nail biter right to the end though Rachel was in

control at all times. Getting a Pawn to the end and pick-

ing up a second Rook she slid it to the edge of the

board. Check mate. 3-1 to us. Round 3 to us. Our first

team victory. To be honest I am glad we Won but only to

reward the player's hard work and dedication. The rain

continued to poor regardless of their success. However,

and once again, the team were the best representatives

for the school and themselves as could be imagined.

Well done to them all, and congratulations.

P.S. Vladimir could not have been happier or prouder of

our victory. I never actually thought a single negative

thought about him. A great man and friend to Reddam

House though and through. Just trying to build suspense.

Sorry Vlad.

CHORAL SUCCESS AT THE SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD

On Sunday May 21, the Reddam House Middle School

Singers, consisting of the combined Year 7 Vocal Ensem-

ble and High School Singers, competed in the Under 19

Youth Mixed Choir section of the Sydney Eisteddfod. The

choir performed exceptionally well and, with a mark of

90/100, were awarded 2nd place by adjudicator Simon

Kenway.

Maestro Kenway commented on the group‘s ‗beautifully

blended‘ sound, ‗impressive rhythmic control‘ and ‗strong

text communication.‘ He also praised their well controlled

diphthongs and how marvelously the choir worked to-

gether. ‗This was a thrilling performance,‘ he wrote. Oliver

Pires (Year 7) was also singled out for his strongly rhythmic

percussion work in Paul Jarman‘s ‗Pemulwuy,‘ performed

on superb authentic clapping sticks from Western Austral-

ia.

The Middle School Singers have secured themselves a

place in The John Lamble Foundation Australasian Choral

Championships on June 4, and we are very proud of their

achievement. They now have two intense weeks of prep-

aration ahead of them before competing against the

best youth choirs across all sections. Be sure to put the

date in your diary!
