Dengue Prevention
This photograph shows a mother applying mosquito
repellent to her childs skin in order to prevent mos-
quitoes from biting.
How to reduce your risk of dengue infection:There is no vaccine available against dengue, and there are no specific medicationsto treat a dengue infection. This makes prevention the most important step, and pre-vention means avoiding mosquito bites if you live in or travel to an endemic area.
The best way to reduce mosquitoes is to eliminate the places where the mosquitolays her eggs, like artificial containers that hold water in and around the home. Out-doors, clean water containers like pet and animal watering containers, flower planterdishes or cover water storage barrels. Look for standing water indoors such as invases with fresh flowers and clean at least once a week.
The adult mosquitoes like to bite inside as well as around homes, during the day andat night when the lights are on. To protect yourself, use repellent on your skin whileindoors or out. When possible, wear long sleeves and pants for additional protec-tion. Also, make sure window and door screens are secure and without holes. Ifavailable, use air-conditioning.
If someone in your house is ill with dengue, take extra pre-cautions to prevent mosquitoes from biting the patient andgoing on to bite others in the household. Sleep under amosquito bed net, eliminate mosquitoes you find indoorsand wear repellent!

In Rotary, we mark August as Member-ship and Extension Month. There is agood reason why we remind ourselves ofthe importance of membership early inevery Rotary year: because the job of
growing our membership is one that wecan never begin too soon. It is also a jobthat we can never stop working on. In or-der to keep serving, Rotary always needsto be growing!
e have talked for many years about the importance of themily of Rotary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not juste family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families, a priority inr membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, myfe, Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We at-nded the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, ande said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she
ned that club. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Nowat club has 102 members, and it's the second-largest clubTaiwan.
viting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting ourmbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary still has farore men as members than it does women, and that ismething we need to work on. When we bring more womeno Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospectivemale membersand become more productive as well.
his year we are going to have something new in Rotary: aembership support team pin. This means that if you invite aw member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear withur Rotary gearwheel. But we all know that the job of grow-
g membership doesn't end when a new member joins. Itds only when a new member is enjoying being a Rotariand never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs arejoyable places to be is a key part of growing membership.
eople come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but theyay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to remindof you to have fun in your clubs and your districts. Rotarybased on the idea that our service is more effective whene serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary
rvice, share it with others, and Light Up Rotarytogether!

This year, we must finish the job
Almost three decades ago, we Rotarmade a choice to give something far important than money. We chose to
our wordour word that we would ecate the poliovirus and create a futurfree of the disease.
But we haven't yet kept that word. Whaven't yet made the earth polio-free. And in the words Henry Ford, "You can't build a reputation on what you agoing to do."
In Rotary, we have been saying for many years that we going to eliminate polio. It is my hope that there will soocome a time when we will be able to say that we've don
Rotarians throughout the world have been walking this for many years. Polio eradication has been part of Rotadecades now. We talk about it, we work toward it, and wraised money for ita great deal of money, over more tone campaign already. And now we are asking our felloRotarians, and being asked ourselves, to do and give m
We recognize that there will be those who feel they havgiven enough already to the cause of polio eradicationthose who feel we have done enough, and that it is timemove on. To those I say: If we pause, if we slacken nowwe say "almost" is the same as "did," we risk losing all twe have already given. We risk our own good name andgood name of all the Rotarians who came before us.
This is something that we as Rotarians cannot and will accept. We must continue until we finish the job.
