In South Africa consumers have the optionto buy free-range and organically producedproducts, but there is no clearly definedsystem to determine what is “organic” and“free-range”.Retailers use their own interpretations ofthese terms.According to the Department of Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries a hen or its eggs canbe labelled free-range if it spend at least 6hours a day outside and it cannot be caged.According to Kevin Lovell, the CEO of theSouth African Poultry Association the onlyway consumers have to determine whethersomething was free-range is to rely on theretailers’ own auditing systems. The free-range lamb that Checkers outletsstock are free of antibiotics, Ms Sarita vanWyk from Shoprite explained. She added:“Free-range eggs are eggs from poultry thatis never caged and has daily access to anoutdoor range area. Our free-range poultryand egg producers have regularindependent third-party audits completed ontheir facilities”.Pick ‘n Pay’s organic meats products arefrom suppliers who don’t use growthregulators, antibiotics and animal by-products in the feed.Platinum Gazette asked readers how theyfeel about free-range and organic products. They also commented on whether they thinkthere should be better regulations in placeto define what is free-range and organicallyproduced products.

Ms Winnie Matsana and Ms Milly Malepe said: “We don’t want something with additives, itis killing us. We want things that are natural like the organic and free-range foods. We areprepared to pay more because it will be healthy food. Government should start to regulatehow things must be produced to be organic and free-range”.

Ms Marcia Mohlala said: “No, I don’t care ifsomething is organic or free-range. I alsodon’t want to pay more for those products. We don’t need another law, governmentdon’t need to give attention to that”.

Ms Theresa Mabasso said: “I just trust myown animals to be organic. We don’t want topay more for organic and free-rangeproducts because there is no guarantee thatthe animals was well treated”. With her areValencia and Mampho.

Mnr.

Mnr.

Mr C Nkwana said: “Yes, I care whetherfood is organic and free-range. Yes, I amreally prepared to pay more because I wantto live long. Government must regulate thisbecause it will help the industry”.

Right: Ms Elizabeth Masinga and MsLebogang Tonga said: “We care about itbeing organic and free-range, but we don’twant to pay more. We want to know theanimal had a good life before it wasslaughtered and sold in a supermarket.Government must regulate it to ensurequality”.

Right: Ms Anna Mathonsi said: “No, I don’t care if things are organic or free-range. I am notprepared to pay more. Food is too expensive. We are in any case not sure that things thatsay they were free-range or organically produced truly were. What about our health if wecannot be sure? We blame government for everything which we should not do, butgovernment should be giving guidelines for these products”. With her is Nhlakanpho.

Mr Patrick Mogakala said: “Free-range andorganic meat is better. I’ll pay more becauseit is healthy and good for me. Governmenthave to encourage farmers to raise theanimals the right way”.

Mr Aaron Maredi said: “They must regulatefree-range and organic farming. Now we arenot sure if we are being told the truth. Weknow the meat is expensive, but we don’tknow how it was raised. If I’m sure it wasraised properly, I will pay more for the meat.I’ll then know the quality”.

Ms Doreen Mphogo and Ms Annah Sithole said: “We’ll buy organic and free-range products.Government must tell farmers how to produce organic and free-range foods. If they don’t themeat may not be so tasty”.

Yebo! Ek sal betaal daarvoor as ekweet dit is free-range. Dalk moet dieregering ‘n wet maak wat sê hoe die goedmoet werk”.

Links: Mnr. Jannie van der Wal sê: “Daar ismos gesondheidsinspekteurs wat kyk datdie vleis reg is, so daar hoef nie regtig wettete wees vir organiese en free-range goednie. In die nuwe Suid-Afrika maak almal mosmaar soos hulle wil”.

Regs: Me. By haar is Chantelle,Bianca, Willem, Aldene, CJ enGawie.

Mnr.

Mr Moses Moretse said: “I’m prepared topay more for free-range animals.Government must give guidelines on howsomething that was ‘free-range’ must bekept”.

Mr January Masha said: “Meat is meat. Idon’t care if it was organic, free-range ornot. I just want healthy food but I don’t wantto pay more for it”.
