    African Rainbow Minerals Limited(ARM) and Anglo American PlatinumLimited, joint venture partners of theModikwa Platinum Mine (Modikwa

    or the Mine) regret to announce thefatal injury of two employees atModikwa. On Friday, 27 January2012, two employees were fatallyinjured in an unfortunate fall ofground accident. Operations at theMine have since been halted to allow

    for a re-evaluation of safetyprocedures.The Company would like to express

    its sincerest condolences to thefamily, colleagues and friends of thedeceased.

    Only a few weeks to go before this diamond in the mining safety crown in South Africa and internationally would have reached the nine million fatality free shifts

    benchmark, this official communique from ARM landed on editors desks. Unofficially Platinum Gazette learned of the deahs of a female and male employee last

    week Friday. More information about the accident were not available at the time of going to press, apart from the fact that a memorial service for the deceased

    was held at the mine on Wednesday. A request by the newspaper to attend was not granted. Mr Reginald Kgoedi of the mine confirmed on Wednesday that

    production had not been normalised yet after the accident.

    The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) expressed concern over the ever-increasing number of mine deaths. NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka stated

    that the 2011 death toll of over 120 in the South African mining industry was crushing the governments goal of zero fatality. The NUM strongly believes that

    drastic action is needed to compel the mining industry to comply with safety standards and procedures. The Presidential Audit into mine safety revealed that

    only 67% of mines comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act, he said. He further added that the NUM remained of the view that the State should undertake

    a technical audit into the mining industry and its aging and ailing infrastructure. We call on the State to hold the industry fully accountable for its failures and

    adopt a no-nonsense approach when it comes to mine deaths, Seshoka said.

    The case against six men charged with conspiring to kill a

    community leader in Swale village near Burgersfort was postponed

    by the Burgersfort Magistrate's Court on Monday.

    Businessman Philemon Tebele, 51, his three sons and two

    employees, remain in custody until their next appearance on

    February 6.

    Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the 51-

    year-old man was arrested at his home on Saturday, while his three

    sons and two employees were rounded up during the course of the

    day.

    Last year local residents accused the 51-year-old man ofcommitting a ritual murder. He then allegedly tried to hire assassins

    in a bid to kill the man who had mobilised locals against him.

    On the 23rd of November last year, James Tebele, 48, went

    missing and his decomposed body was found on the 30th the same

    month.

    In retaliation, the community attacked the businessman after he

    was alleged to have been the last to person to be seen with the

    victim. His house was burnt and one of his shops was also pelted

    with stones.

    Crime intelligence officers then set a trap posing as potential

    hitmen and were given a firearm together with R2 000, leading to the

    arrest of the six.

    An inquest docket was opened after Tebeles body was found.

    Police were still awaiting the results of a forensic examination.

    Three other men would appear in the same court in February

    charged with public violence related to the attack on the

    businessmans property.

    Conspiracy

    to kill casepostponed

    Greater Tubatse Municipalitys Council had their first meeting for

    the year on Tuesday in the council chamber in the municipal

    building up on the hill in Burgersfort. Not everybody was there,

    with two apologies.

    Notably some of the opposition members were also not there, but

    they did not apologise. Apart from the normal council business, a

    surprise also awaited councillors in the form of a visit by a

    representative of the Auditor Generals office, with areport on the

    councils financial affairs to be tabled. This report was not

    discussed, other than the fact that the council heard from the

    Auditor genrals office that they received a qualified report. On

    four aspects, and one of the aspects has to do with problemsregarding supply chain. The gentleman from the Auditor genrals

    office told the council that a meeting will be scheduled where the

    report will be discussed, especially the four qualifications (or bad

    news, problem aspects). The Mayor, Councillor Nkosi Josias

    Mahlake, moved that further debate about the report be

    postponed until after the envisaged meeting.

    Other things of note is that the Mayor told the council that

    everything is done from the municipality side to repair

    infrastructure that was damaged by the recent heavy rains and to

    make routes accessible again.

    Aquarius Platinum CEO Stuart Murray has criticised the

    increasing number of safety stoppages in South Africa and

    said the country has become a difficult place to operate

    in.

    The ASX-, LSE- and JSE-listed miner reported a 4%

    quarter-on-quarter drop in its attributable production to 105

    629 oz of platinum-group metals (PGMs) in the three

    months to the end of December, which Murray partly

    blamed on the widespread and sometimes unjustified

    application of Section 54 stoppages.

    This issue is making the South African mining industry

    a difficult place in which to operate and while zero-harm is

    laudable, there must be practical implementation of the

    law.

    Not only have the incidences of these stoppages risen

    markedly, in many cases the time now taken by the

    regional department to resolve these stoppages has risenfrom two days to a week or sometimes more, he said.

    The Section 54 stoppages increased in frequency for

    all South Africas platinum miners, with both Anglo

    American Platinum and Lonmin indicating last week that

    they were discussing more appropriate safety mechanisms

    with the Department of Mineral Resources, as the current

    trend of safety stoppages adversely impacted on

    production.

    Murray also slammed the regulatory environment in

    Zimbabwe, where it owns the Mimosa mine, which

    reported flat output.Some of the stakeholders in both

    countries in which we operate simply do not grasp the fact

    that there are only 100c in the rand and 100 pennies in the

    dollar. There is simply no more to be taken before

    operations are threatened.

    Murray said the challenges facing the regions platinum

    industry should not be underestimated. PGM margins are

    now low in both rand and dollar terms and oversupply,

    coupled with poor economic outlook is likely to ensure

    that this remains the case, at least in the short term.

    Production at the Everest project between

    Lydenburg and Roossenekal was negatively impacted

    by a protected two-week strike by Members of the

    Association of Mining and Construction Unions

    employed by contractor Murray & Roberts

    Cementation. Production fell by 19% quarter-on-

    quarter to 18 712 oz its lowest level in 18 months and

    cash costs rose by 10% to R10 737/oz. Everests

    revenue declined by 34% to R140-million compared to

    the previous quarter.

    Attributable production from the Kroondal mine fell

    by 27% year-on-year and 2% quarter-on-quarter to 43

    398 oz in the December quarter. Marikanas output

    declined by 12% year-on-year to 14 404 oz. This was,

    however, an 11% increase on the 12 996 oz producedin the September quarter.

    Despite issues relating to the implementation of the

    new hangingwall support methodology at the Kroondal

    and Marikana mines being largely resolved during the

    quarter, production remained below capacity owing to

    the widespread application of Section 54 safety

    stoppages.

    Kroondals revenue fell by 16% to R642-million

    quarter-on-quarter due to lower volumes and a

    reduction in the basket price, which resulted in a

    negative sales adjustment of R125-million.

    Similarly, revenue at Marikana decreased by 4% to

    R221-million quarter-on-quarter despite increased

    volumes, owing to lower basket prices, which resulted

    in a negative sales adjustment of R40-million.

    Average PGMs dollar prices deteriorated in the

    quarter with platinum and palladium falling by 14% and

    17% respectively, while rhodium fell 16%

    Mine are taking the initiative to spread the word so that

    employees can have an understanding regarding HIV/

    AIDS issues.

    They are important to the company, as their words

    bring changes in employees lives. Even those who were

    scared to get tested for HIV/AIDS, now got tested as

    they understand the HOW part of the infection. As safety

    is a priority at ASA Metals, it is important for employees

    to know the three ways of preventing HIV/AIDS, namely:

    A- Abstain,

    B- Be faithful andC- Condomise.

    The Top 10 Peer Educators Champions of 2011, S

    Mohlala, M Mokoo, MD Nonyana, M Tladi, H Haasbroek,

    S Maake, G Maapea and S Mphethi are doing their jobs

    by submitting their Weekly Reports as per request.

    Elneth Thulare, the HIV/AIDS Coordinator, and Maria

    Mashilo, the Assistant Coordinator, are monitoring the

    process and make sure that the Wellness Programme

    operates in the right way with the help of other

    committed Peer Educators.

    It needs more effort to do this, but the Peer

    Educators committed themselves that they will practice

    what they preach, and lead by example. There is also a

    competition of performance for 2012 and the company

    urges those Peer Educators who are not performing, to

    start doing what they are trained for. The main goal is

    to achieve the testing target and make sure that

    employees know about their HIV/AIDS status.

    ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine submitted its

    HIV / AIDS Management System for certificationagainst the SANS 16001 on 17 19 January 2012,

    after several years of development. Launa Neeves, the

    external auditor from Dekra said that the certification

    audit went extremely well and recommended full

    certification of ASAs programme. Committed and

    passionate the Peer Educators played an important

    role in the certification process, according to the

    company.

    On 11 November 2011, ECM hosted a golf

    day to raise funds for the community

    projects and to thank all the companies

    who made a contribution towards these

    projects and to internal projects.

    An amount of R26 500 was raised. With

    The annual vaccination of dogs and cats in the Greater Tubatse area by the AnimalHealth Division of the Department of Agricultures Praktiseer office will start again

    next week.Residents of the area can bring their cats and dogs to the venues below for freevaccinations to prevent rabies. Last year hundereds of animals were vaccinated and

    the programme co-ordinators hope to this year exceed all previous numbers.

    Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Province.Madzivhandila astonished the adjudicatorsand all in attendance with her knowledge ofprevention strategies as well as roles whichordinary citizens should play in reducing crime

    in Limpopo.The Deputy Provincial Commissioner of Policein Limpopo Major General Ntombi Dladla saidthe management of police in Limpopo is happy

    that the project was run with all fairness andthat the best product was unearthed. Our

    activities, we are going to use these juniorprovincial commissioners and junior

    A 26-year old women of Leboeng Gankoanavillage was arrested after she allegedlyassaulted a 4-year old child.The woman allegedly started hitting the childafter the child soiled herself. She hit the child

    vir a vuvuzela. A bystander called the SAPS.The SAPS arrested the woman and took the

    child to the local clinic from where she wastransferred to Sekororo hospital for treatment

    of her injuries.

    The child is an orphan and was staying withthe suspect and her uncle after the death ofher mother. She is now in a place of safety.

    Two suspects appeared in the Leboeng

    periodical court on accounts of murder. They

    were charged with the murder of ButibutMabuza from Leboeng Newstand. Mabuzawas last seen alive on 10 December 2011.When he did not return home and his familycould not reach him on his cellphone he was

    deceaseds body near the R36 road covered

    with a plastic net and with a knife next to the

    What is heartburn?What is heartburn?Heartburn is a feeling of burning, warmth, heat or pain that often starts in the upperabdomen just beneath the lower breastbone. This discomfort may spread in waves

    upward into your throat and you may have a sour taste in your mouth. Heartburn isalso called indigestion, acid regugutation, sour stomach or pyrosis. It is not caused byproblems with the heart, although heart problems can sometimes feel like heartburn.

    Heartburn may cause problems with swallowing, buring, nausea or bloating. Thesesymptoms can last up to 2 hours or longer. Sometimes heartburn problems can causesleep problems, chronic cough, asthma, wheezing or choping episodes.

    Heartburn is usually worse after eating or made worse by lying down or bending over.It gets better if you sit or stand up. Almost everyone have troubles with heartburn nowand then. Many women have heartburn when they are pregnant.

    What causes heartburn?Heartburn occurs when food and stomach juices back up into the esophagus, which isthe tube that leads from the throat to the stomach. This process is calledgastroesophageal reflux. Common causes of this includes: incomplete closing of thevalve between the esophagus and the stomach. Food and drinks such as chocolate,peppermint, fried foods, fatty foods, sugars, coffee, carbonated drinks or alcohol maycuase this. Once heartburn occurs the backflow of stomach juices may cause theesophagus to become sensitive to other foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, spicyfoods, garlic and onions. Eating these foods may cause more heartburn.

    Pressure on the stomach caused by obesity, frequent bending over and lifting, tightclothes, straining with bowel movements, vigorous exercise and pregnancy are alsocauses. Smoking and the use of tobacco products. Prescription and non-prescritionmedicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, prednisone, iron, potassium, antihistamines orsleeping pills can cause heartburn. Stress can increase the amount of acid yourstomach makes and cause your stomach to empty more slowly.

    Severity of heartburnMild heartburn occurs about once a month. Moderate heartburn occurs about once aweek. Severe heartburn occurs every day and can cause problems such as troubleswallowing, bleeding or weightloss.

    Heartburn with other symptoms such as hoarseness, a feeling thatfood is stuck in your throat, tightness in your throat, asthma,dental problems etc. may be more serious.

However, while the EIA was still underway, construction of the new systemcommenced in an effort to reduce the risk of water pollution if the existing system were to fail.     Ga-Matodi on Sunday last week.Maatlopo faced Morethetho FC and won 1-0. The only goal of the game was scored

    by Maatlopo United captain, TrevorMohlala.This week Maatlopo United will be hosting

    Phasha City Rock on Saturday 4 February2012. On Sunday Tubatse United fromPraktiseer will visit Moroke to play against

    Saterdag hul houtsport tussen die Kiaat- enOlinhoutspanne gehou. Die dag is met nswierige en energieke optog afgeskop.

    Rekords wat die dag gebreek is: Gewigstootdogters o/12 - Ansie Bylsma verbeter n rekordwat van 1999 af staan vanaf 7.16m na 8.5m.

    Gewigstoot dogters o/13 - Ansunet Viljoenverbeter n rekord wat vanaf 1998 staan vanaf7.68m na 7.68m. Gewigstoot seuns o/10 -Juandre Jacquet verbeter die rekord vanaf6.18m na 7.32m.Uiteindelik het die Kiaatspan as die wenspan

    weggestap. Hulle het ook die sangbekerverower.Ouers het flink gehelp by die snoepie, astydhouers en selfs die skoolhoof, me. RonnieFerreira (foto links bo) het vir die kleingoedgewys hoe om weg te spring. Calvin, n sjef byForever Resorts Blydepoort het gesorg dat die
