Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makup- ula has assured the province of the state of readi- ness of almost 95 672 matrics registered for 2013 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. Makupula believes that administratively, the province was ready for matric, a culmination of 12-years of schooling used by many as a barome- ter of the country’s state of health of education and by extension the way in which to gauge the peoples’ ability to join the mainstream economy. “The Department has been engaged in many support programmes for Grade 12 learners,” said Mtima. WHAT started as an inspirational talk in Nel-son Mandela Bay about a year ago, has givenrise to a project aimed at putting the metro –named for world icon, Nelson Mandela – onthe world map.

It was a presentation by Mike Abel fromM&C Saatchi Abel, to the Madiba Bay Forum, that gave birth to a project by the citizens ofthe city, to make Nelson Mandela Bay thegreatest city in South Africa.

Project Nelson Mandela Bay is an idea by“the good citizens” Michelle Brown, KobusGerber and Andrew Barton, and about 70 vol-unteers, to take the idea to the next level.

Speaking to themedia at thePEClub inBirdStreet, Port Elizabeth recently, project coordi-nator, Gerber said, “We’re the good citizenswho were inspired by a talk we attended and

decided to do something to market NelsonMandela Bay as a tourism destination ofchoice.”

Gerber said they were volunteering theirtime and services to the project.

According to Gerber, it’s been a year sincethey started the work of first consulting bigbusiness, the metropopolitan municipalityleadership and other important stakeholders, including the Business Chamber and theMandela Bay Development Agency.

“We named the initiative ‘Project NelsonMandela Bay,’ and soon more than 70 volun-teers signed up to turn our vision into reality. We now have elected a task team working atwinnable ideas to kick-start our project,” saidGerber.

He added that they had a senior official ofthe municipality in the task team.

The Six Projects allocated to the task teamto lay the foundation for a promising 2014 are:

* Freedom Precinct* 12 Active Months and World Class events* Creating SA’s Greenest City* Creating SA’s Safest City* Creating SA’s Smartest City (ThroughEd-

ucation) and* Creating SA’s Most Connected City

(Through Technology).Asked which of these were most urgent,

Gerber said, “All six stand out. But, we’d liketo establish the city as a city of destinationfor 12 months of the year.

However, as youknow, thatwill not happenif we don’t have the safest city.”

Gerber said it was good that the metro al-ready hosts events such as the Iron Man, theRugby 7s and the Splash Festival.

According to him, creating smaller eventsaround flag ship events, was one way to fillvisitors’ diaries, tomake sure guests were en-tertained while in Nelson Mandela Bay.

not about being beautiful, said she wants tohelp groom young girls to become ladies andyoung boys to become gentlemen.

“Since I stopped modelling at Mod-SceneStudios under Barbara Moore in NewtonPark, I have been thinking of starting a mod-elling school, to plough back into the commu-nities,” said Gungu-Sam.

She added that it pained her to know thatthere were no modelling schools in the town-ships.

PLANS for South African Football Associa-tion (SAFA) to develop football at grassrootslevel are bearing much fruit. This became evi-dentduringtheSAFA-NelsonMandelaBayIn-ter Local Football Association (ILFA) Under-13 Tournament which started in Septemberthis year.

Nodefa beat Mofa 2-1 in that tournamentthereby paving a way for a regional competi-tion which takes place at the New BrightonOval Stadium this Saturday November 2.

A delighted NODEFA president Monde Mh-letywa who doubles as SAFA NMB DeputyPresident said they felt it possible to honourtheir team and technical staff with their asso-ciation’s colours at a function held at their of-fices in KwaNobuhle last Friday.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba yesterday(Tuesday) Mhletywa said this SAFA tourna-ment was part of the grassroots football devel-opment initiative which is one of the SouthAfrica2010FifaWorldCupLegacyTrustFundProgrammes.

This five-year programme was directed atU-13 and U-15 boys and girls who will be ma-tured enough and ready to represent thiscountry in the Africa Nations Cup and thesubsequent World Cup in 2018, said Mhle-tywa.

Mhletywa said SAFA was selecting playersfrom each LFA to play in the regional leagueup to the national league. The hope, he said, was that players who manage to be selectedto play provincially and nationally through-out the years will be ready for internationalduty in the next five years. “That’s the plan,”he said.
