ADVERTORIAL: Boston CollegeBoston – epitome of professionalism

‘Professionalism is knowing how to do it,when to do it, and doing it’.

Becoming professional in the real sense ofthe word, is an ongoing process that may bafflenewcomers to the world of work, especiallythose who have not been exposed to other pro-fessional and corporate workers.

For this reason Boston City Campus andBusiness College encourages professional be-haviour from their learners, during course at-tendance, to give them exposure to profession-al expectations that they will need to meetwhen they reach the real world of work.

“Not everyone understands the need forpunctuality and meeting what is expected ofyou, but at Boston we make these part of thequalification expectations, and thus groomlearners to contribute on a meaningful scale intheir new jobs,” says Natalie Rabson of BostonCity Campus and Business College.

The problem is that what one person regardsas being professional, another one would seeotherwise.

“The bottom-line is that to be regarded as aprofessional in your field of work you have tomeet the needs of those you deal with, withoutfail,”says Rabson.

“Needs vary from employer to employer andfrom company culture to company culturewhich is why some may view you as being theepitome of professionalism while the next em-ployer thinks you’re barely competent.”

Competence is a major factor in determiningprofessionalism. As Frank Tyger puts it, “Pro-

fessionalism is knowing how to do it, when todo it, and doing it.” To be a professional is touse education, experience and training to dowork, analyse, problem-solve and make sounddecisions – all this while adhering to timelinesand behaviour that is appropriate for the par-ticular environment you’re working in.

Competence and skills are a good founda-tion, but not enough. There are other factorsthat play a role, Rabson points out. Thoughthe definitions and requirements differ, thefollowing basics are accepted widely in theworkplace as being ‘professionalism’ essen-tials:

Punctuality – a professional is on time forwork, meetings and meeting deadlines. Incases where an agreed deadline cannot bemet for good reason, he or she informs or fore-warns the relevant parties.

Taking responsibility – a professionaltakes responsibility for his actions and forthe work he delivers. This includes owningup to mistakes. It is not professional to blameoutside circumstances. It is also not profes-sional to go into elaborate explanations thathold no relevance to the task at hand.

Respect – a professional doesn’t necessari-ly have to agree with everything but needsto respect other people and their policies, pro-cedures, beliefs, values, culture and so on. Heor she needs to give others space to expressthemselves and be ‘heard’.

Appropriate dress - business suits do notdefine professionalism; however, the profes-sional situation defines which clothes youshould wear. How you look defines how peo-ple see your professional being, inside andout.

Appropriate behaviour - avoid becomingas personal at work as you would at home.Personal preferences, stories, feelings are notalways appropriate. A professional won’t dis-close confidential customer information; heor she won’t tell you that they just sold a simi-lar product to JohnnyXdown the street. Also, don’t bad mouth anyone; yet don’t hesitate toblow the whistle on wrongdoing.

Excellent work – professional people takepride in their work. They regard work asmore than merely a means to make moneyand try always to deliver to the best of theirability.

Focus on work – a professional takesbreaks and socialises but does not waste timeor focus by gossiping and complaining aim-lessly. If unhappy with something, a profes-sional takes steps to fix a ‘problem’.

Willingness to learn - professional peoplekeep up to date in their field and invest timeand money in training, researching and test-ing information from unreliable sources.

Moving up, not down – a professionaldoesn’t deviate from a level of performanceand behaviour. He or she will try and meetthe company’s expectations of them as wellas their expectations of themselves.

Being authentic – a professional is true tohim- or herself; does not pretend to be some-one else. Professional people are honest andhave personal integrity.
