THE Chairman of the VolkswagenGroup South Africa, Hubert Waltl, turned the first sod at the site of thenew loveLife Youth Centre inKwaNobuhle, Uitenhage.

The R20 million loveLife YouthCentre aims to make a meaningfulimpact on the lives of the youth ofthe Uitenhage area.

It will offer youth specialisedcounselling services and also pro-vide support to teenagers and par-ents. Additionally, it will have out-reach programmes covering near-ly 20 000 young people annually inthe 20 surrounding schools.

The centre is Volkswagen SouthAfrica’s 2010 World Cup legacyproject and is funded through a do-nation from Volkswagen AG.

It will be managed by loveLife. The centre is scheduled to open onWorld AIDS Day, 1 December 2012.

At the sod-turning, VolkswagenGroup South Africa MD, DavidPowels said: “Volkswagen Group

South Africa and Volkswagen AGbelieve the centre will have ameaningful impact on the commu-nity of KwaNobuhle and the sur-rounding areas for future genera-tions.”

AFTER a very successful medialaunch on March 7 which featuredworld class cricketer Makhaya Ntinias the guest of honour, the ABayWheelchair Wednesday wheels areturning furiously for its start onWednesday, May 2.

The power of wheels is often under-appreciated.Onadailybasispeoplere-lyonwheels– twoor four– forallkindsof mobility needs, but mostly for get-ting fromAtoB.But just imaginewhatit is like spending every day reliant ona tool, like a wheelchair, that is com-pletely central to one’s existence andthe space and place challenges thatcome with it.

This exercise of imagination is themotivebehind theAssociation forPer-sons with Physical Disabilities’(APD’s) pioneering new fundraisingand awareness initiative, dubbedABay Wheelchair Wednesday.

“APD wanted to keep the idea sim-ple but effective,” said Brian Bezui-denhout, APD Executive Director. “Sowe thought, what better way to raiseawareness, funds and turn the tableson traditional thinking about peoplewith physical disabilities than to giveable-bodied people some insight andperspective into our everyday lives.

“How do we do this? The answer issimple. May 2012 will see companyheads, chief executives, and city lead-

ers in general contribute R5 000 andpledge to spend four hours in a wheel-chair on one of the 5 Wednesdays inMay.Thispractical experiencewill as-sist our leadership fromthepublicandprivate sectors in gaining a deeper in-sight into theobstaclesofpersonswithmobility challenges, as well as provid-ing opportunities for practicalchange,” said Bezuidenhout.

Withover 75 000peoplewithdisabil-ities living in Nelson Mandela Bay,this is a well-needed perspective, add-ed Bezuidenhout.

TheAPDaims toget 50 localhigh-fly-ers to come on board – ten each week. Each of these business and public sec-tor participants will donate R5 000 totake part in ABay Wheelchair Wednes-day. These donations will ultimatelytranslate into 50 wheelchairs whichwill go to needy children with disabili-ties. Any remaining funds will go toAPD’s Day Care Centre in Motherwellwhere they care for 29 children withvarious disabilities between the ages of1 and 7 years.

“One of the major factors that pro-hibit personswithdisabilities fromin-tegrating and functioning normallywithin society is the issue of reasona-ble accommodation,” Bezuidenhoutexplained. “The ABay WheelchairWednesday initiative will challengethe mindset of the decision-makers

within society and help to bring aboutan unprecedented paradigm shift inthe way persons with disabilities aretreated.”

The first organisation to pledge itssupport was Nelson Mandela BayTourism, with CEO, Mandlakazi Ske-file dedicating herself to performingher duties in a wheelchair eachWednesday in May.

Other leaders who have followedthe NMBT CEO’s example are fromABay Stationers, ACSA, The Board-walk Casino and Entertainment Com-plex, Die Burger, Bay FM, Dis-ChemPharmacies and Spar – to name but afew.

Willie Bosch, Project Coordinator, advises that there are still participantchairs available and he encourages lo-cal businesses to enter.

The Grand Send-Off, which will seesome very prominent Nelson MandelaBay personalities in wheelchairs, willtake place on May 2 at 10am from theAPD Nelson Mandela Bay offices at 55Paterson Road. For more informationcontact Willie Bosch at 0 041 484 [email protected]., Media 24 in the Eastern Cape andits newspapers PE Express and DieBurger, have endorsed this projectand will be reporting on Wheel-chair Wednesday events through-out May.

RECIPIENTS of state grantswill soon be able to use the lat-est technology to ensure theirsafety and to curb fraud.

Luzuko Qina, provincialspokesman of the Social Securi-ty Agency (Sassa), said lastweek that this piece of moderntechnology is part of the secondphase of the re-registrationprocess that starts on June 1.

“The process is not a re-appli-cation for grants or checking if-beneficiaries do qualify for thegrants they are already receiv-ing. We only want to make surewhether those receiving grantsdo exist. This is all part of fight-ing fraud,” he said.

Qina also said adults’ finger-

prints will be taken and theirvoices will be recorded.

Each beneficiary who wantsto receive money via a bank, will receive a voice recognitiondevice to use every month to ac-tivate the payment of the allow-ance.

The fingerprints will also becompared with the informationfrom the Department of HomeAffairs and the Revenue Serv-ice (Sars) to curb fraud. Ac-cording to Qina the finger-prints will also be compared tothe police’s database to catchcriminals.

In the case of child grants, copies of children’s hands andfeet will be taken. This will bedone during the school holi-days.

THE mother of the Rhodes stu-dent who was killed en routeto her graduation on Thurs-day, remembers how excited

her daughter was when she last sawher.

Leloma Fufu (24) completed herhonours degree in mathematical sta-tistics at the end of last year andstarted working at the Medical Re-search Council in Durban on April 1.

“She was so excited about hergraduation and counted the hoursuntil her moment on stage. That anyman could do something so cruel toan innocent girl on the eve of heradult life, is something that I willnever understand as long as I live.”These were the words of a cryingBongicaFufu fromMotherwell aboutthe murder of her daughter LelomaFufu.

On the day of her murder, Lelomahad hitch-hiked from Motherwell toGrahamstown to collect her gown forthe ceremony at a clothing store. Herparents would later that afternoontravel with the car to the event.

According to Fufu the last time shehad spoken with her daughter was at2:55pm when she said she had ob-tained a lift.

When they called her again a whilelater, someone answered the phoneand they could hear music playing inthe background. All their calls there-after were in vain.

“I wanted to panic, but forced my-self to remain calm and continue tobelieve everything would be fine.”

She and her husband, John, droveto the shop late afternoon to find outwhether Leloma had picked up hergown. “When they told us the onewith her name on was still there, Iknew,” said Fufu. They were takento the hall where their talented

daughter’s allocated chair was emp-ty.

The parents then went to the policeand experienced a night of hell. “Wesat up and prayed. Only a parentwould understand what goesthrough a person’s mind on such anight.”

Captain André Beetge, a policespokesman, said passers-by cameacross Leloma’s body at 11am in thewoods behind the old Coega Hotel onFriday. She had been stabbed fourtimes in the chest.

Police suspect robbery was the mo-tive for her murder. The deceased’sshoes, formal clothing, camera, phone and money were stolen.

According to Mr. Fufu his daugh-ter hitch-hiked regularly on week-ends and holidays without any prob-lems.

The Executive Mayor of the Nel-son Mandela Bay Municipality Zan-oxolo Wayile paid a visit to the griefstricken Fufu-family on Monday af-ternoon to offer condolences on be-half of the Nelson Mandela Bay Mu-nicipality and the broader communi-ty of Nelson Mandela Bay.

“As the Municipality we are deep-ly shocked and outraged by thissenseless act of violence against aninnocent young woman,” said Way-ile.

“We are further enraged by the re-cent spate of violent crimes that havetaken place in Nelson Mandela Bay.Not too long ago we had the shootingof two on-duty Police Officers, result-ing in the death of ConstableThandiswa Bambiso. Violent acts ofthis nature have no place in our soci-ety and should be condemned,” hesaid.

According to Wayile the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality is com-mitted to ensuring the safety and se-curity of all its citizens and to thisend is working closely with the

South African Police Services andother law enforcement agencies topromote law and order.

“We also understand that for us tosucceed against this scourge of vio-lent crime, we need a strong partner-ship between civil society and lawenforcement agencies. We thereforecall on our communities to rally be-hind our efforts, acting within thelaw, to make sure that the objectiveof creating a crime-free society be-comes a reality,” he said.

At time of going to print no arrestshave yet been made.

APORT Elizabeth High Schoolprincipal Mzimkhulu Qunta is ona mission to help townshipschool-going learners improve

examination results.

“But this will only happen if learners im-prove reading,” said Qunta, who is principalof Sakhisizwe High School in KwaZakhele.

Qunta said he had observed that a numberof matrics fail their examinations not becausethey do not know the answers to the questions, but owing to the fact that they do not under-stand the question because they cannot under-stand English - the medium of instruction.

Sakhisizwe High school has introduced aLibrary Project aimed at instilling a cultureof reading in the learners of the school - some-thing which benefits neighbouring schools aswell.

Named after Judy Aljoe, who sponsored the

building of the library as well as shelves andbooks, the running of the library is taken careof by teachers Rewallen Blaauw and Jeff Mun-yaka. Learners take turns to visit the libraryevery day of the week.

Qunta believes schools – as centres of learn-ing and excellence – must have libraries tohelp children read. He added that thoseschools who don’t have libraries must collectbooks and put them in boxes. Teachers shouldthen give learners books to read and ask themto summarise the books for the class - to getoral marks.

“This can assist our children and improvetheir language literacy. The language is themedium of conveying ideas, and that is im-proved through reading,” said Qunta, addingthat reading also broadens the mind.

To achieve this Qunta has pleaded withschools and individuals with unwanted booksto assist his initiative by donating bookswhich will be used to assist poor learners intheir learning of the English language and im-prove their results.

KHANYISILE Nel is hoping to represent hercountry in the next World Karate Champion-ships in Mexico in July this year, that is if shemanages to raise enough money for the trip.

Khanyisile of Quku Street, Motherwell inPort Elizabeth needs at least R20 000 to be ableto go overseas.

The 15-year old Masiphathisane HighSchool Grade 9 learner in Motherwell, who al-ready holds a black belt in karate, has quali-fied to represent the Eastern Cape in the SAgames in Pretoria next month (May); but hermajor problem is getting sponsorship for theoverseas trip.

This has caused a major strain on Khanyis-ile’s gogo Joyce Madikane who would like tosee her granddaughter realising her dream totour overseas with her sport.

South Africa went to France last year, butfinancial constraints prevented Khanyisilefrom going and gogo Joyce fears if nobodycomes to their rescue this year, that wasbound to happen again.

“Winning in local and national games hasbeen a norm for her. I wish she can finally getthe sponsorship and go overseas this year,”said gogo Joyce, adding that she was alwayssaddened to see Khanyisile watching herdreams disappear because her family waspoor and cannot help her realise it.

“Khanyisile is thebright star andagoodam-bassador for South Africa. She has been in-volved in karate for a long time and is testimo-ny to the discipline that the sport instills inthe young minds,” said sensei Mike Ndubewho trains Khanyisile at Motherwell KarateAcademy.

According to Ndube, Khanyisile needsabout R20 000 for travel, accommodation and

everything else to make the trip possible. Hesaid he hoped a good Samaritan would comeand make Khanyisile’s dream come true.
