PORT Elizabeth Jazz Diva Nomza-mo Mkhuzo (78) has died.

The lady of soul whose voicecaptivated thousands of music

lovers for more almost six decades, both asa solo artist and member of a group, is nomore.“Our aunt became very sick last Wednes-

day. We were shocked because she was al-ways a lively and joyful person despite hersuffering from diabetes. We rushed her toDora Nginza hospital where she was admit-ted and breathed her last breath on Satur-day,” said Nomzamo’s niece Nozuko Mbo-pa.According to Mbopa, MamaMkhuzo cele-

brated her birthday with family on 23 May.She ate her cake and sang. Little did theyknow that it was her last with them.Mama Mkhuzo lived in Gqomose Street,

Zwide.Her passing has left a void in the music

fraternity, especially jazz.“We’ve lost a great musician whose art-

istry was never really appreciated. She was

a good singer and composer, but was neverrecognised,” said saxophonist Patrick Pa-sha who sang with Mama Nomzamo.Mama Nomzamo’s band member and

friend Vuyelwa-Qwesha Luzipho, also a di-va, described Mama Mkhuzo as some-onewho was always smiling and whose voiceresembled that of the US diva Ella Fitzger-ald.“Likeme, she was brought up in a singing

family and was married to another musi-cian, her late husband, Jamani “JJ” Skwey-ana, a guitarist with whom she sang, re-corded and toured South Africa.”Qwesha-Luzipho said they formed Metro

Jazz Queens aka The Jazz Divas with Nom-zamo, Dineo Lebakeng,WelekaziMosia andlater were joined by Thandeka Marwanqaand sang jazz to entertain Nelson MandelaBay music lovers.“We enjoyed singing together and we

complemented and supported one another– unlike today’s artists who pride them-selves on competing with one another,”said Qwesha-Luzipho.She added that Mama Mkhuzo loved peo-

ple and enjoyed singing even if there wasno payment at the end.

Being a family of musicians, mamaMkhuzo taught her children music.Before Sindiswa, Nkululeko and Monde

passed on, they also sang with her especial-ly some of her compositions, said Qwesha-Luzipho.Reverend Pasha agreed, “We believe

IN a bid to boost maths results throughoutthe Eastern Cape, a group of academicallytop-performing Grade 10, 11 and 12 mathsteachers, all from disadvantaged schools,have been selected to mentor and assist oth-er teachers in their districts, and also helpwith structured exam revision.

A total of 150 teachers identified as “leadmathematics teachers” in the province havejust completed four days of training througha programme jointly run by the NelsonMan-dela Metropolitan University’s Govan Mbe-ki Mathematics Development Unit(GMMDU) and the Department of Basic Edu-cation.Training took place at the Coega Village

Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth – anda further four days of training are plannedfor later this year.“In each of the 23 basic education districts

of the Eastern Cape, a number of teachershave been identified to assist their col-leagues at underperforming schools,” saidGMMDU head Professor Werner Olivier.“We want to empower a cohort of selected

in-servicemaths teachers to turn around theachievement of mathematics outcomes inthe province.“The lead teachers will share resources,

boost content and encourage teachers to getinvolved in various extracurricular classes,like winter school programmes, while alsousing innovative digital teaching and learn-ing resources that have been developed byGMMDU.”DumaNcanywa, the department’s chief di-

rector: skills development, said the leadteachers would work closely with districtsubject advisers.“In the coming years, the department will

also be setting up similar support structures,including the establishment of professionallearning centres, for Grade 7 to 9 mathsteachers, to enhance the quality of teachingand learning in these grades.”Cecil Heradien, subject adviser for mathe-

matics (FET level): Port Elizabeth district,

said the Eastern Cape’s lead teacher initia-tive – the only such initiative in the country– would greatly benefit both teachers andlearners.“It will help teachers become more confi-

dent in teaching curriculum content tolearners.”As the only maths subject adviser in the

Port Elizabeth district, Heradien overseesabout 200 maths teachers at 80 high schools– which makes it difficult to provide individ-ualised support.Lead teachers will now be able to form

small cluster groups with their peers, whichwill address this challenge.He said the project would also exposemore

teachers to using technology in their class-rooms.

“Not only will it save time (drawingsketches), but it will also help learners to bet-ter visualise the concepts.”GMMDU has run accredited mathematics

content and skills upgrade programmes(Mathsup) for more than 700 Eastern Capeteachers over the past three years, and thelead teachers have beenhand-picked as thosewho performed at distinction level, withinthis group.Each of the teachers who attend Mathsup

receives a laptop with GMMDU’s innovativetechnology-linked teaching and learningprogramme (packaged as TouchTutorTM),which has been developed in line with mod-ern learners’ learning requirements.It is used not just to boost their own under-

standing of the maths curriculum, but also

as a teaching resource to be used in the class-room.TouchTutor includes video lessons, inter-

active PowerPoint presentations, assess-ment (with feedback), language support anda host of other digital features, fully alignedwith the Grade 10 to 12 syllabus. It offers thesame for physical science teachers.GMMDU runs Mathsup in parallel with its

flagship incubator programme for selectedlearners with potential, where learners re-ceive TouchTutor on a tablet, which they canuse after school hours as a “personal tutor”.There is also a desktop model – which in-cludes TouchTutor on PCs – which has beenintroduced at more than 100 schools in theEastern Cape to assist learners outside of theincubation programme.

PORT Elizabeth police arrested four sus-pects in connection with armed robbery andillegal possession of firearms and possessionof suspected stolen property last Friday.

Police spokespersonCaptain Sandra Jansevan Rensburg said the suspects were be-tween 23 and 29 years old.

Police recovered a firearm, a hijacked ve-hicle and stolen property.It is alleged that at about 6am on Friday

a 30-year-old complainant was walking inLeyland Street, North End, when a whiteBMW passed him by.The vehicle then turned around and

stopped next to the man and one suspectpointed a firearm at him while two morearmed suspects got out of the vehicle and

took his laptop bag and cellphone.Mount Road crime prevention unit mem-

bers circulated information about the vehi-cle involved in the robbery.At about 8am, members of the PE Flying

Squad spotted a similar vehicle in the DealParty area with four occupants inside.They followed, stopped the vehicle and

searched it.“The members recovered a firearm and

further investigation revealed that the vehi-cle was positively linked to a hijacking in Al-goa Park last week,” Janse van Rensburgsaid.The suspects were questioned and the

house of one of the suspects was searchedand the stolen laptop and cellphone belong-ing to the complainant was recovered.The suspects are expected to appear in the

Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court soon.

The comedian, who was the firstwinner of So You Think You areFunny in 2009, has been packingout venues across the countrywith the show which is his firstone man production.

“Baby Mama Drama” is basedon a strong observation madeabout single parenting issues. Acasualty of single parenting him-self, Nene’s aim is to change theperception that parents are mon-sters. Touching on some sensitiveissues and featuring stories fromhis own youth, told with his char-

acteristic humour, Nene will havehis audience rolling on the floorlaughing.

Nene has come a long way sincehis humble beginnings in Empan-geni in KwaZulu-Natal. Since win-ning So You Think You are Funny,he has won several awards includ-ing the Satmas for the Best Indige-nous Comedian as well as twoComics Choice Awards which arevoted for by the audience.

YOUNG people in Nelson Man-dela Bay should brace them-selves for a cultural festival thelikes of which have never seen inthe city before.

This is according to MandelaBay Arts Council chairpersonMonde Ngonyama.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Cul-tural Festival is scheduled totake place at the Port ElizabethOpera House from July 27 to 30.

Ngonyama, who is also the Op-era House general manager, saidin assisting the development ofarts and crafts they had startedwith checking the amount of tal-ent available.

This, he said, was based on thepremise that: “To develop talent,you don’t assume depth of talentor lack thereof, you have to startsomewhere and on our part westarted with the talent showcasein December.”

This had been aimed at deter-mining the amount of skill avail-

able and the need to advance thearts.

More than 100 prospective per-formers attended the two-roundauditions held around the metroand about 30 finalists were iden-tified.

Ngonyama mentioned, howev-er, that there were concerns thatthe timing in December had notbeen good owing to some hope-fuls writing examinations andbeing unable to attend auditions.

“We then decided to have amop-up soon to check whetherwe haven’t left some of the starsbehind,” he said.

He was certain, however, thatthe talent they had identified sofar would stamp its authority onshow-business in the not-too-dis-tant future.

“So far, we are very excitedwith what we have,” he said.

This development of arts waspart of the creative economy theArts Council had sold to mayorDanny Jordaan as part of thenine-point plan investmentstrategy, he said.

ONE of six children born to poor butloving parents in the town of Moko-pane in rural Limpopo, John Ram-mutla, knows what it is like to growup in difficult circumstances – buthas never allowed this to hold himback.

The newly-qualified civil engi-neer, who is a Project Manager inTraining at SANRAL, believes theyouth of South Africa can bringabout the change this country needs– and he is starting with himself.

John (23) has just organised thesecond SANRAL-supported SouthAfrican Youth Leadership Confer-ence, in partnership with NelsonMandela Metropolitan Universitystudent association, Believers LoveWorld (BLW), to inspire the youth tocontribute to socio-economic devel-opment in South Africa.

The conference, held at NMMU onMay 23, was attended by nearly 500Grade 12 learners from three town-ship schools in Port Elizabeth and130 NMMU students and workingprofessionals, including SANRALemployees.

The conference was also live-streamed to three other universitiesin the Eastern Cape – Fort Hare,

Walter Sisulu and Rhodes.It followed the highly successful

inaugural conference he ran earlierthis year in Limpopo, for 1300 uni-versity students and learners.

“I’m really passionate aboutSouth Africa and its development.As a nation, we have so much poten-tial and talent. Someone has to goout there and exploit that talent andinspire people to act. John believes there are two mainissues affecting South Africa’syouth. The first is unemployment,and the second is alcohol and drugabuse. And it is these problems thatlead to the majority of the country’ssocial problems, including rape,robbery and violent crimes.

Instead of looking to governmentfor solutions, John believes youngpeople should see what they can do,by becoming business or social en-trepreneurs.

“I encourage the learners to startnon-profit organisations (NPOs) toimprove the lives of others. I encour-

agethemtostart theirownbusiness-es, to create jobs, and I give them thesupport they need to do this. Wheth-er you are 16, 17, 19 or 20, you canstart a business.”

Regarding the problem of alcoholand drug abuse, John said youngpeople should set up organisationsto help their peers.

“It’s easier for a young person tolisten to another young person. It’smore impactful than listening to apoliticianandthechancesofsuccessare greater.”

John said a lack of resources andbeing over-burdened by responsibil-ities were often used by the youth asexcuses for apathy – but he believesthey can achieve despite this, just ashe did.

John himself has been a social en-trepreneur since school. With a flairfor maths and science, he and someclassmates used to tutor learnersfrom other schools, due to the short-age of maths and science teachers inthe area. “In Grade 11, we were tu-toring Grade 12 learners. That’s howpassionate we were.”

Once they matriculated and wentto university – John with a full bur-sary from SANRAL – the group

wanted to continue to make a differ-ence to Limpopo learners.

So they started an NPO called“Enlighters Edu-Solutions” andthey expanded it to include careerexhibitions. It continues to run todate.

This year, John started a secondNPO, Hi-Africa, for the purpose ofempowering the youth through na-tional conferences and summits.His long-term vision is to run theseevents across Africa.

He is “truly, truly grateful” towork for a company that is deeplycommitted to developing communi-ties and leaders, and encourages itsemployees to do the same. “SAN-RAL is wonderful. Allowing me torun this project and by sponsoringthe events, shows SANRAL’s com-mitment towards nation building.”

John said what kept him goingwas his deep faith, those who sup-port and mentor him and his pas-sion to see the country’s youth mo-bilised to make a difference. “Youhave to be passionate about whatyou do, and you have to be commit-ted – then you’ll know what to do.You’ll get ideas and you’ll be in-spired to act on them.” – REPORTER

The tournament was playedstraight in a knockout format byU/13, U/15 and U/17 teams.

Thewinning teams in each cate-gory will walk away with a float-ing trophy and gold medals whilethe runners-up will be presentedwith silver medals.The finals will be played at Nel-

sonMandela Freedom Peace Parkon June 16.

The two fighters will be lockinghorns for the second time afterJoubert whose known by the mon-

iker “The Warrior” won the lastfight for the then vacant title inApril 2015.

Joubert lost the title to GrantFourie in his first defence a fewmonths later.

He then beat Jason Bedeman onpoints and called Fourie for a re-match in a contest that includedtheWBA Pan African Super Light-weight title in March this year.

Joubert (with 33 fights, 24 wins,11 byway of KnockOut, four losses

and five stalemates) reclaimed theSA title after a hard fought 12rounds against his nemesis.

As things stand, the EasternCape Junior Welterweight cham-pion Jikani, alias Naughty, re-mains the mandatory challengerfor the title. This is after he foughta drawn battle against Asanda Ja-cobs of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage.
