R2 million Zwide cemetery upgrade completeNCEBA DLADLA

A Cemetery with a historical sig-nificance in the Nelson MandelaBay Municipality has been up-graded, beautified, fenced andhanded over to the community tolook after.

A function to hand-over the Zwidecemetery, which is the final restingplace of heroes of the struggle andRivonia trialists Govan Mbeki andRaymond Mhlaba, the Pebco threeand the Cosas two, among others, was held on Thursday last week.

Separated from the Vista Campusof the Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity (NMMU) in Missionvaleby the Uitenhage Road, the Zwidecemetery was established in the1980s and identified by the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality as one of

the cemeteries in the metro thatneeded urgent attention. The ceme-tery is now in a good state followingthe construction of approximately1 500m of concrete palisade fencing, installation of the main and pedestri-an gates and minor masonry works- all to the tune of just over R2 mil-lion. The upgrading and mainte-nance of this local cemetery was oneof the key projects the municipalityhas undertaken as part of the Ex-panded Public Works Programme(EPWP). It was labour-intensive as itprovided local communities withmuch needed jobs. “The cemeterywas upgraded in order to make itmore appealing to the community, thereby ensuring that it would bekept neater and cleaner than in thepast,” said Municipal spokesperson,Ongama Mtimka. The project was adirect response to the communityoutcry over filth and vandalism.

Communities urged to stopviolence against women

NCEBA DLADLA

IT is that time of the yearagain in South Africa forcaring members of thecommunity, civil society, the church, GovernmentDepartments and Non-Governmental Organisa-tions to call fellow mem-bers of the community tostop the abuse of womenand children.

Abuse can be physical, sexual, financial or emo-tional and knows no genderor age. But it is the unaccept-ably high incidence of abuseof women and children thatis addressed in this aware-ness campaign.

The 16 days of Activism ofNo Violence Against Wom-en and Children is held thisyear from November 25 un-til December 10.

“According to the SAPScrime statistics for2010/2011, contact crimesgenerally decreased by 6.9%(sexual assaults and rapesfall within this category). The only two provinces that

showedan increasewere theWestern Cape and NorthWest Province.

“Contact crime is an areaof crime which by its natureleads to serious feelings offear and insecurity becauseit is the form of crime withwhich violence is normallyassociated,” said UitenhagePolice spokesperson Lieu-tenant Colonel PriscillaNaidu.

“While we are satisfiedthat this crime category gen-erally has declined, SouthAfricans remain concernedabout the number of rapesthat occur in the country,”continued Naidu.

Nelson Mandela Bay hasan alarmingly high numberof cases of violence andabuse against women andchildren. This was alsohighlighted during the Na-tional Launch of the FamilyViolence, Child Protectionand Sexual Offences (FCS)Unit in Motherwell, PortElizabeth,by Police DeputyMinister Maggie Sotyu, thenow suspended NationalPolice Commissioner Gen-eral Bheki Cele and a host

of national top Police Bri-gade members in October.

From April 2009 to March2011, for instance, SAPSCrime Statistics revealed astartling 238 cases of SexualCrimes committed againstwomen; with a drop of 10down to 228 in the periodfrom March 2010 to April2011 in New Brighton. Thiswas followed by Motherwellwhich recorded 168 cases inApril 2009 to March 2010 anda slight drop of two down to166 in the period from April2010 to March 2011. Lt. Col.Naidu is hopeful that the re-introduction of the FCS Unitwill provide a platform forcrimes against women andchildren to be thoroughlyinvestigated in order to en-sure convictions. There isalso a need for womenthemselves to break the si-lence and report abuse. The SAPS, Nicro, Child-line, the Departments ofJustice, Correctional Serv-ices, Social Development, the Victim Support Cen-tres, WAWA and SASSAcan also assist women andchildren who are abused.

Residents gather inMotherwell to fight abuse

NCEBA DLADLA

NELSON Mandela Bay Met-ro residents have beenurged once more to stopwomen and child abuse. This was a strong messagefrom all the speakers dur-ing the 16 Days of Activismof No Violence againstWomen and Children eventat the NU30 CommunityHall in Motherwell yester-day.

The event, organised bymembers of the SA PoliceService and the Victim Sup-port Centres in the metro inconjunction with the Depart-ments of Justice, CorrectionalServices, Social Development,WAWA, Nicro, and Childlinewaswell attendedbymembersof the community.

Members of the Victim Sup-port Centres, WAWA andChildline supported by Ama-doda Okwenene, an organisa-tion of men against abuse, marched from the MotherwellPolice Station to the NU30Community Hall carryingplacards that communicate

very strong messages de-nouncing this scourge.

The regional manager of theThuthuzela Care Centre at Do-ra Nginza Hospital, Linda LeRoux, who is a prosecutor byprofession, said the abuse ofwomen and children is aworldwide problem whicheverybody must fight to end.

“We are joining other wom-en of the world during these 16days of activism, to stand uptogether and say no to womenand child abuse,” said LeRoux. She said that it being ahuman rights issue its last dayis quite significant as it is onDecember 10, InternationalHuman Rights Day.

According to Le Roux theyreceive about 150 cases of rapeper month in the Dora NginzaRape Crisis and the perpetra-tors are sometimes set free ow-ing to lack of evidence, andthis, she added, has to come toan end.

She said victims must en-sure that they do not destroyevidence and have themselvesexamined as soon as possibleafter the rape. “Women mustspeak out; rapists must getwhat they deserve - to rot in

jail.”In the same vein, Le Roux

warned women against usingtheir bodies to manipulatemen. “It is wrong,” she said.

Meanwhile, a high numberof cases of violence and abuseof women and children havebeen reported in the Mother-well and Kamvelihle PoliceStations, and that was acourse for very serious con-cern, said Thobeka Tshata ofthe department of Social De-velopment.

She mentioned the case ofthe disappearance in Augustof the three-year old toddlerZenixole Solomon who hasstill not been found. Anotherexample is the case of a fatherwho could not get hold of hiswife with whom he had a disa-greement and who decided instead to burn his child.

Nokuzola Macotshana ofthe Social Development De-partment said her office is in-volved in the programmes toempower and support victimsof abuse so that “victims willnot be victims for the rest oftheir lives - they must over-come the ordeal and becomethe survivors.”

Motherwell women benefit fromthe UN Cop 17 Conference

NCEBA DLADLA

FIVE women from Motherwell in PortElizabeth are very happy that they decidedto form the Noziqhamo Arts, Craft and Re-cycling Project almost 12 years ago.

They collect rubbish - cardboard, bottles, cans and plastic bags, and recyle them to makebeautiful household items like shopping bags, candle holders, bracelets, bags and hats.

Not only are they feeding their families andeducating their children from the money theyget from collecting and recycling rubbish, butthe Noziqhamo Arts, Craft and RecyclingProject made 100 hats from plastic for the in-ternational delegates at the United NationsCop 17 Talks on Climate Change held at theICC Convention Centre in Durban this week.

“I was phoned by Robyn Weir of a promo-tions company in Johannesburg askingwhether I could assist her to get into contactwith Noziqhamo Project which she saw on theinternet,” said Swartkops Conservancy Envi-ronmental Manager Jenny Rump who worksclosely with the Noziqhamo Project. Theproject was asked to make 400 hats for the dele-gates from the 194 countries, including Presi-dent Jacob Zuma. But they managed to do 100.

“We were so excited to get the order to make

the hats for the Cop 17 delegates. The onlyproblem was that we could not get enough ofthe green and white colour (from Woolworth’splastics) they wanted so we added the yellowand black including royal blue, but they lovedit,” said Noziqhamo Arts, Craft and RecyclingProject Manager Eunice Jacobs.

The group felt that the job was too much forthem in a very short space of time, and decidedto involve a group from Walmer, said Jacobs, adding that they asked the Walmer group todo at least 50 hats. They only managed to do30hatswhileNoziqhamodid the remaining 70.

“I am so proud of Noziqhamo Project. Thesewomen are real hard workers. And, theirwork is so beautiful that Robyn loved it. Sheasked for the pattern and said she is going togive it to other groups in the country to finishoff the required 400,” said Rump proudly.

Jacobs said the success of their project hasmade it possible for them to attend Environ-ment Workshops all over the country and alsoto attend Women Business Conferences likethe one in Boksburg, Gauteng last year andanother one in Durban.

“We flew to these conferences and experi-enced things that we would not have experi-enced if it were not for this project of turningrubbish into cash,” said Jacobs, urging otherwomen to wake up and do things for them-selves in the spirit of Vukuzenzele.

War Room pleasesirate consumers

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality(NMBM) has managed to considerably re-duce the number of irate consumers sincethe introduction of the War Room on Serv-ice Delivery early this year.

TheWarRoomonServiceDelivery isa24-hourcall centre (reachable on 0 080 020 5050) whereresidents are able to log any service delivery-re-lated complaints. It is a one-stop service centrethat attends to all enquiries of residents.

The War Room on Service Delivery boasts arate of over 95.11% of the 34 528 complaintslogged from May to the beginning of Novemberthis year having been resolved.

NMBM has been hard at work, responding toqueries related to water and sanitation, electrici-ty, roads, storm water and waste management.

Theescombe resident, Peter Alpwig, was im-pressed by the level of professionalism and ded-ication shown by the staff in the War Room onService Delivery when he called in for a queryregarding his water supply. “When I called thenumber, I was assisted by friendly and profes-sional staff who promised to attend to the prob-lem promptly. They called me back later to up-date me. When the problem was solved – whichhappened within one day – they called me againto check whether everything was fine,” he said.Rowallan Park resident, Laura Mace, called theWar Room to have her blocked sewage pipefixed. She said the municipal official who as-sisted her, Sthembele Mkhokeli, was confidentand friendly. “The same day I reported theproblem it was fixed. I am pleased with the serv-ice and thank the Municipality for introducingthis call centre, which delivers on time,” saidMace. Executive Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, saidhe was pleased that the War Room had seen con-sistent continuous improvement since the mu-nicipality started opening it up for all serviceareas of the municipality in May.

Dame Judith Sephuma to sing in PEINDABA REPORTER

THE simplicity of JudithSephuma’s ‘I am a LivingTestimony’ is set to inspireSouth African music fans inNelson Mandela Bay whenshe will perform on Decem-ber 3 at the Nangoza JebeHall in New Brighton.

Judith Sephuma introducedher fans to many of the songsfrom ‘I am a Living Testimony’at a very special show in Jo-hannesburg early in July andreceived a rapturous response.

Now draws closer the re-lease of the multi-platinumseller and award-winner’sfourth studio album, givingfans throughout South Africaan opportunity to experienceSephuma’s most inspiring andunassuming recording yet.

“‘I am a Living Testimony’ isnothing less than a reflectionof my testimonial and journeythus far and one that will in-spire listeners to reflect ontheir own,” says Sephuma ofthe 10-track offering releasedthis September through SonyMusic Africa.

“It’s an inspirational recordthat takes you on a journey oflife, through songs about lovein Sepedi and Zulu. I am veryproud of it.”

‘I am a Living Testimony’ isalso a beautiful gift to Sephu-ma’s diverse and loyal fanbasethat has helped sustain what is

one of the most successful andenduring South African musiccareers of the 21st century.

As Sephuma puts it “In cre-ating this album, we wanted togive something really good tothe fans. They are the oneswho motivate me to writesongs and I have some of thebest producers in the industrycrafting each song just right.”

The reason for Sephuma’sfocus on her fans on her fourthstudio album is clear to her:it’s these individuals, spreadthroughout the country and al-so beyond South Africa’s bor-ders that have enabled her tobecome a successful artist, with several awards to hername (South African MusicAwards, KORA Awards, andMetro FM Awards).

From 2001’s ‘A Cry, A Smile,A Dance’ (2001) to ‘New Begin-nings’ (2005), and ‘Change IsHere’ (2008), Sephuma has en-joyed a successful and sus-tained music career, turning

her into one of SA’s most ad-mired solo female artists.

“I have travelled far andwide performing for audiencesaround the world, always re-turning home to my roots andto the fans who have supportedmy career from the very firstCD sale to hundreds of thou-sands of music downloads, andmultiple platinum album saleslater,” Sephuma says. “This istherefore a thank you to eachand every one of them.”

Drivenbyherpersonalreflec-tion and a deep conversationwithher fans, ‘I amaLivingTes-timony’has love, inall its differ-ent manifestations, flowingthrough each song, giving therecord a simplicity that has apowerful and lasting impact.

Whether it’s the heartachethat is clear in ‘Write Me A Let-ter’ (“Write me a letter/ Beforeyou walk away/Under my pil-low/Tell me anything youneed me to know”), the elegantlove song ‘You Are The Rea-son’, or the album’s title trackwhich is a moving demonstra-tion of Sephuma’s faith in God,‘I am a Living Testimony’ pro-vides solace for the soul.

As Sephuma herself puts it,“In the lyrical content and thearrangement of the music, Ihave strived to make sure thateach song comes to the listenerin a simple way. It’s been anamazing way to approach analbum and I believe that we’vemanaged to do that with everysong here.”
