Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron said the municipality is con- tinuously monitoring and clearing il- legal dumping. Residents, however, according to Baron, continually dump illegally. Baron admitted that spaza shops and house shops are cer- tainly part of the problem. “If residents can provide any infor- mation with regard to the culprits then the municipality will prosecute them,” said Baron, adding that his municipality is responsible for ren- dering of waste collection services in the said area. Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s will always return home for his mom’s cooking

Local designers make waves withclothing range

RIAAN MARAIS

“Every day is an opportunity tostart over . . . to get clarity so thatyou can live out your vision”

These words are written in bold ona photo of the Proteas cricketerLonwabo Tsotsobe above the dining-room table in his parents’ home. Ac-cording to his mom, Dorothy, her sonlives true to these words.

“He sees every match as an oppor-tunity to prove himself, and I getnervous every time because I wanthim to succeed. With every ball Ihope that he takes a wicket.”

As any proud mother would be,she is always very excited about herson’s achievements, especially nowthat this sonofPortElizabeth is thirdon the International Cricket Coun-

cil’s rating of top one-day bowlers.“He was so excited when he heard

the news,” said his mother in theirBluewater Bay home, “and shortlythereafter he heard that he took 50wickets for the Proteas in the leastamount of time.”

Sporting talent definitely runs inthe Tsotsobe veins. Every member ofthis family has achieved in sport ata high level.

His older brother, Langa, plays forone of PE’s top rugby clubs, while hisolder sister, Nomsebenzi, is a formercaptain of the women’s Springbokrugby team.

His late father, Toto, was a mem-ber of the former Leopards (the in-ternational rugby team for non-white players) who played againstteams such as the British Lions andthe All Blacks.

His mother was member of a group

who started women’s rugby in PortElizabeth and she works for CheekyWatson, president of the EP RugbyUnion.

“Lopsy took park in karate atschool and he was mad about tennis, but cricket was always his favouritesport.”

She laughs with joy remember-ing how he always boasted withhis wickets, even though it waswhile playing in the street with arubbish bin for wickets and planksfor bats.

“And now he plays all over theworld, always on the road or over-seas.”

And she knows how to keep herson happy when he is home for achange. “I only have to cook a saucystew or put chicken in the oven. Hewill always come home for his moth-er’s good food.”

WHEN Thamsanqa Mkoko and his friend AkhoTabata started Black Coc clothing range in 2010,little did they know that their brand of clothingwould be in such a high demand in fewer than24 months in the market.

“We did a lot of research on this range andinvolved our clientelein choosingwhat theywant to wear,” Tham-sanqa (30) said.

Thamsanqa andAkho (who is nowbased in Cape Town)grew up together inKwaNobuhle, Uiten-hage hoping to be-come entrepreneursoneday.Theduohavealways wanted tostart up and grow abrand of their own.Thamsanqa looks tothe likes of the re-nowned fashion-de-signer David Tlale forinspiration.

A Cape Town com-pany provides themwith the fabric whilethey do permanentsilk-screening andembroidery them-selves on T-shirts(with glitter), caps and hoodies.

Thamsanqa, who isan ITSpecialist andaNel-son Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU)BSc Computer Science Graduate, said they

made use of social networks to find out abouttheir clients’ interests and preferences in thebrand; and this is what led them to put glitteron their men’s T-shirts. “Clients wanted this,”he said.

Thecompany is alsomakinguseof theprofes-sional services of Sibongiseni Njaba (24) as amarketer. Njaba is an LLB Degree NMMU Finalyear student and also an IT guru. “I am also the

official face of theBlack Cocbrand,” quippedSibongiseni.“Just like ourmore than 500 hipand happeningclients who wearthe brand withpride and enthu-siasm are the faceofourbrand,” shesaid.

According toSibongiseni theywill soon addGolf-shirts,Tanks Tops for la-dies and sportsclothing to theirrange.

The only hugeproblem that thiscompany is fac-ing at the mo-ment, is sellingfrom the boot ofthe car. “This

Zero budget for grass cutting in MetroMONIQUE BASSON

THE budget for bush clearing and grass cut-ting has been slashed from R3.2 million to ze-ro.

This is according toDAWard2Councillor,DeanBiddulph,who isputtinghis fullweightbehind the fight of the Parks Department inorder tohave theiroriginalbudget, orat leasta portion of it, reinstated.

The firstbudgetcut, cuttingdowntheabili-ty of the Parks Department to tend to this ba-sic service delivery, was implemented at theend of 2009 in order to help limit the level ofexpenditure by the municipality.

“Now, things have taken a turn for theworse.Notonlyhas thebudget forbushclear-ingandgrass cuttingbeen reduced, but it hasbeen totally taken away,. The little moneythat there was for this purpose, has alreadybeen spent in the current financial year,”said Biddulph.

“I have already been in contact with theChief Financial Officer of the Metro, KevinJacoby, to urgently look at the budget of theParks Department. The only ‘good’ news Ihave received to date, is that I did not receivean immediate “No” from Jacoby.”

DA Ward 8 Councillor, Gustav Rauten-bach, is also at his wits end when it comes

to bush clearing and grass cutting in hisward.

“I amsittingwithvarious letters fromresi-dents complaining about overgrown ervenand long grass that need to be taken care of.When these requests are sent to the relevantmunicipal department, the answer is alwaysthe same: the budget for bush clearing andgrass cutting is completely depleted,” saidRautenbach.

“Accordingtothemunicipality, theseserv-ices will resume once money is availableagain, but I am telling you now, the backlogis so long that they will never be able to ad-dress the backlog effectively.”

Further problems faced by the Parks De-partment are a critical shortage of staff, asthey only have two staff members that mustserve the whole Metro, as well as a lack ofequipment.

According toBiddulph, somegrass cuttingand bush clearing will still take place, but itwillbeassessedonthegravityof theproblem.“TheMetrowill still havepriorityareas suchas the beachfront, but planned grass cuttingwill take place further and further apart.”

Despite several attempts, no commentcould be obtained from municipal spokesper-son, Kupido Baron.

Biddulphwillalsopresentthematterat thenext council meeting.

A PORT Elizabeth school is a leaderin the war against unemploymentand hunger that is ravaging commu-nities in the Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality.

Seyisi Primary School, in Kwaza-khele recently received seedlings fromthe Department of Rural Developmentand Agrarian Reform to plant a gardenandproduce food that isneeded tonour-ish the bodies and minds of not only thechildren of the school, but also mem-bers of the community who are largelyunemployed and solely dependant onsocial grants for a living.

This came about due to the efforts ofNomondeNtsundwana, a teacher at theschool and a SanParks’s Kudu Awardwinner and ambassador of the orangeflesh sweet potato which is known forbeing a source of nutrients that areneeded to help the body grow.

Nomonde, who won the award in2010whilst shewasa teacheratCanzibePrimary School in Motherwell, is thegoose that lays the golden egg, accord-ing to the school principal, XoliswaZik-ishe. She was redeployed to Seyisi Pri-mary.

“Nomonde is a hard worker and adedicated teacher who cares about thepoor members of the community. Shewas brought to our school – whose chil-dren come from poverty-stricken fami-lies – for a reason,” said Zikishe proud-ly.

“WhenIwontheKuduaward - Imadea vow that I would encourage otherschools and the surrounding communi-

ties to plant the gardens and producefood. Today I am taking giant steps to-wards that journey,” said Nomondewho invited schools, Non-Governmen-tal Organisations (NGOs) and Commu-nity-based Organisations (CBOs) fromKwaZakhele, Zwide, Motherwell, theNorthern Areas , Addo and Paterson tocome and learn and ultimately go outand share the wisdom with other mem-bers of their communities.

Walmer township boxing revival on the cardsNCEBA DLADLA

THE revival of boxing in theWalmer Township has taken apositive turn, thanks to the dona-tion of boxing equipment by thehead of Andile Boxing Promo-tions, Andile Siqwepu, at theweekend.

Siqwepu presented a boxing devel-opment tournament featuring a va-cant Eastern Cape Junior Middle-weight title fight between East Lon-don’s Malibongwe Ndzube andMthatha’s Phumlani Ntlebi at theWalmer High School Hall on Satur-day. Ndzube won the title on a fifthround TKO.

This was after 18 years that Wal-mer Township community last saw alive boxing match despite the areaboasting with both amateur andpromising professional fighters.

Siqwepu, assisted by Nelson Man-dela Bay Boxing South Africa (BSA)boss Mthunzi Mapitiza, presentedWalmer High School principal Lun-ga Dyani with boxing equipmentsuch as gloves, mitts, pads, headgear, protectors and punching-bags, tohelp develop boxing in the area.

“I received this equipment fromformer Sports Minister MakhenkesiStofile to revive boxing in MandelaBay and I am using some at my gym

but will be donating the rest to othergyms and schools around the metro,”said Siqwepu.

According to Siqwepu, WalmerHigh School was the third recipientfollowing Loyiso High and Sithem-bile Primary Schools in Zwide town-ship.

Ward Councillor Nomajama Ben-ya welcomed the gesture and prom-ised to keep a watchful eye on theequipment - to make sure that it isused for its purpose - to develop box-ing in the area.

“Through this boxing equipment,we hope knives and guns and boozewill be the thing of the past as ouryouth will be concentrating on build-ing themselves through boxing. Wethank you Mr Siwepu and Mr Mapiti-za for thinking about us in your de-velopment initiatives,” said Cllr.Benya.

Other results of the tournamentare:

Lusindiso Siyo stopped MelumziJantjies TKO 1 (flyweight); AnelisaGungqisa won KO1 Hlanga Kantsi(Jnr. lightweight); Simo Mbandebeat Mthuthuzeli Funde on points(Jnr. featherweight); Siyabonga Blouwon TKO 1 Thando Mahlahla (fly-weight); Mzoxolo Dyani won KO2 Mi-lile Baskiti (featherweight); andLonwabo Roboshi won TKO 1Ndikho Magadaza (Mini-flyweightdivision).
