AN off-duty Policeman, stationed at Gelvan-dale SAPS, was shot dead at Salamntu Street,KwaZakhele, on September 20, around 1am.
Police said it is alleged that the 32-year-oldconstable parked his bakkie next to a cell-phone container and about five suspects fol-lowed himand dragged himout of the contain-er and assaulted him.
Police spokesperson,WarrantOfficerShaunVieira, said theconstablewasalso shot severaltimes in the upper body and died at the scene.“It is unclear at this stage whether he wasrobbed of any of his belongings. Although at-tempts were made to open the vehicle by thesuspects, the vehicle was not taken.
“At this stage, we cannot speculate over thecause of the shooting. Amurder case has beenopened. No arrests have been made as yet.”

er, Lt General Celiwe Binta, condemned themurder and said, “Any person who attacks orkills a police official will face the full might ofthe law, as an attack on or murder of a policeofficial is a threat to our constitutional democ-racyand robs our communities of their protec-tors. Detective Warrant Officer Eddie Saaiman,from the Family Violence Child Protectionand Sexual Offences Unit in Uitenhage, saidRomano Adams (26) who pleaded guilty torapewassentenced inthePortElizabethHighCourt to 25 years in prison,.
The Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Briga-dier Phillip Salukazana praised Saaiman and
said, “SAPS management is appreciative ofthe commitment and dedication of our detec-tives and would like to express our gratitudeto the member and would like to assure himof our pride in him for his hard work and ex-emplary conduct.”

THE South African School of Motion Pic-ture Medium and Live Performance, AFDA,is poised to open a campus in Port Elizabeth.
The school, which this year celebrates its20th anniversary, already has campuses inJohannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.AFDA recently acquired accreditation by
the Council of Higher Education to open anadditional site of delivery in Port Elizabeth,after working together with the local filmand television production training provid-er, The Media Workshop, for a number ofyears to get the necessary requirements inplace.The chairperson and co-founder of AFDA,
Mr Garth Holmes, says “AFDA has decidedto expand into the Eastern Cape because webelieve that the Eastern Cape has a strongIntellectual Capital base, cultural heritageand capacity for generating local storiesand entertainment production content”.The school is having an Open Day for pro-
spective learners on September 27, from9am until 12pm at The Media Workshop’spremises at 99 2nd Avenue, Newton Park.Over the past two decades, AFDA has pro-
duced award winning filmmakers, televi-sion producers and directors, leaders in thecommercials industry and some of the coun-try’s top performing artists. They are theonly South African film school to have wonan academy award for the best foreign stu-dent film and to have been a finalist for theprestige Court de Metrage at Cannes.AFDA has, since the inception of the
SAFTA awards, not only hadmultiple nomi-nations and awards won by the alumni, butalso received 21 out of a possible 24 nomina-tions for best student film, and won theaward 7 out of the 8 possible times that theaward has been presented.“I am often asked how AFDA substanti-
ates its claim that it is the number one insti-
tution of its kind in the world today. Myanswer has always been the same. We rateourselves based on our contribution to theSouth African film industry through thequality of our graduates, the work thatthey create and the work that they pro-duce,” says Holmes.“It’s great to see our guys cracking it out
there, but hardly a co-incidence.”As chairman of the African regional as-
sociation of CILECT (the world film andTV school association), Holmes has inter-faced with most of the top film schools inthe world, affording him a unique opportu-nity tomeasureAFDAagainst internation-al film schools.The school is designed to manifest AF-
DA’s number one focus and product: thestudents and their capacity to develop andsustain the local entertainment industrythrough the development of relevant localcontent for local audiences, and by exten-sion, international audiences.AFDA had some early success with Jan
Hendrik’s short film Triomfeer and DeanBlumberg’s Under the Rainbow. Five of thenew feature films exhibited at this year’sKyk-Net Silverskerm fees were writtenand directed by AFDA graduates: filmslike Etienne Fourie’s Windpomp, Hard toget, Zee Ntuli’s film, Corne van Rooyen’sHollywood in my Huis, Wickus Strijdom ofZama Zama fame’s Suurlemoen andBakgat1, 2, and 3, and Fanie se Labola’s Henk Pre-torius’ new film Leading Lady.The filmmaker Danie Bester has pro-
duced over 20 feature films since graduat-ing fromAFDAwith aB.A. Honours degreein motion picture. Bester and his AFDApartner C.A. van Aswegen, were the earlypioneers of local films that tapped into theniche Afrikaans market and made use ofthe DTI rebate to fund and produce suc-cessful box office hits, like his first featurefilm Bakgat and his most recent box officerecord-breaking Pad na jou Hart.
Top filmschool toopenacampus inPort Elizabeth
JOE was a young man with a bright fu-ture ahead of him. He had the financialas well as emotional support of his fami-ly. He also had the same intellectual abili-ty as hismother and fatherwho both hadstable jobs.
At school he performed above averageand his intelligence was evident in hissharp humour that drew people to himlike a magnet.
One thing was lacking though; Joe didnot have any idea of what he wanted tobecome. He had no future vision of him-self in the workplace.
The result was that Joe just chose tostudy towards a qualification that sound-ed good and it looked as if people in thatcareer earned very good salaries or suc-cessfully ran their own businesses.
The fact that Joe chose a qualificationand career that did not suit his personali-ty and preferences caused him to have lit-tle interest in his studies.
This led to a string of poor decisions andultimately academic failure. This meantthat Joe was at the mercy of employerslooking for workers with little or no quali-fications whom they could pay as little aspossible.
Unless Joe wakes up and “smell the cof-fee,” he will be at the mercy of other peo-ple for the rest of his life. His life will beplanned and managed for him because ofthe minimal contribution that he canmake to society for lack of knowledge andskills.
As individuals we cannot improve theeconomy or create more jobs.
We can only manage ourselves andmake ourselves more competitive withinthe job market by gaining skills andknowledge that are marketable. The levelof skills and knowledge that we possesscoupled with a positive attitude and workethics ultimately determine the rewardthat we receive in the workplace.
“It is essential that people manage theirfutures.” says Albert Verster from BostonCity Campus and Business College PortElizabeth. “This means that they must
•Set a career goal. The power that willpull them into the future.
•Identify the obstacles that are keepingthem from reaching that goal, such as lackof knowledge, lack of skills, lack of funds.
•Create a strategy to overcome thoseobstacles. This may include sourcing astudy loan, formal studies, experientialtraining.
•Implement the strategy.The Boston Open Day on September 27

NewBrightonbornandbredplayers,SamkeloDumseandPhumelelaPistoli,whoaremembersof the Handball Sport SA U/20 team, revealed toPEExpress Indaba that their intentions were tohelp coach the pupils. Dumse, who is the nation-al skipper, said, “All I want to do is to introducethe basics of handball to the pupils. The basics
are very clear and simple and as soon as thelearners understand the basics, they will be ableto play the game of handball. Furthermore wewant to dedicate our time to all the townshipschools. School sport is the only foundationwhich opens doors for learners. Handball is averysimplesport”.Pistoliaddedthat theywouldlike the schools to participate in a league.
Pistolisaid,“Assoonaswearefullyconvincedthat the learners understand the basics of hand-ball, we will start a league competition in thetownships. We do not have the funds to start offbut I think our knowledge will help in develop-ing the youth”.
