The Treppie, – an adaptation of Entrepre- neur – is the fruit of a partnership between Isu- zu Trucks, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal- ity and Motherwell Urban Renewal Pro- gramme. This move to foster small business develop- ment and job creation in and around Port Eliza- beth, sees MEDO running a week-long tour in search of exceptional individuals who aspire to take their small businesses to the next level. The organisers are inviting entrepreneurs to visit the mobile office to pitch their businesses. Successful applicants will receive a boost to their enterprise in the form of access to further training and the possibility to apply for the range of MEDO entrepreneurial programmes. While the project’s main focus is the Mother- well area – and forms part of the Motherwell Urban Renewal Programme – the tour will ben- efit people across Port Elizabeth as all are wel- come to visit for advice. Speaking to PE Express Indaba at the Moth- erwell Business Development Centre (MBDSC) at the corner of Tyinirha and Nyara Roads where the truck was stationed on Monday, ME- DO Project Manager Noluthando Tutani said Treppie was bringing services to aspiring en- trepreneurs who wanted to start their business but lacked the fundamentals to do so or young people who needed inspiration to start what could later become a successful business. “We are here in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to promote entre- preneurship and enterprising ideas in the communities close to the (Isuzu) factory and in the wider Bay area,” said Tutani who with members of her organisation were answering questions from very interested individuals. Assistance is being given in Information Technology (IT) and ensuring that local entre- preneurs were IT connected in order to broad- en their economic base. Tutani said they also ran opportunity recog- nition workshops for young entrepreneurs, job seekers and people who had business ideas to identify opportunities and start making a suc- cess of their businesses plans. “I came here to enquire about getting a li- cence as I have a Seda Retail and Wholesale Certificate,” said Motherwell resident Thomas Baloyi. Another prospective entrepreneur, Ndileka Mdodana said, she came to know more about IT and Business Administration. “I’ve already started registering my enter- tainment, events and management business, but I came to learn more about the business plan, business proposal and about expanding my network,” said Makhaya Mzisi, also of Motherwell. Executive Mayor, Benson Fihla, said “The training and access to information will help drive the thinking of residents in a direction that will help them either establish or grow ex- isting businesses and thereby create platforms of job creation and business development.” Treppie will be in the following places dur- ing its week-long tour of Nelson Mandela Bay: 22 October: Motherwell NU9 Spar Super Market - Address - NU9 Carwash, Umnulu Road Motherwell (09:00 -16:00) 23 October: Morning: Councillors Office Ikamvelihle, 7 Mzangwa Street, Ikamvelihle Motherwell (09:00 - 12:00) Afternoon: Council- lors Office Wells Estate, 42333 Vrolik Street, Wells Estate (12:30 - 16:00) 24 October: Motherwell Business Develop- ment Centre (MBDSC ) - Address - Corner Tyinirha and Nyara Road, Motherwell Shop- ping Complex (09:00 -16:00) Treppie hits the townships Clockwise from left, Megan Ridley, Nolu Tutani (MEDO Project Manager), Steve Masilo, Andy Matiwane (MURP), Makhaya Msizi, Merika Siziba, Vuyiseka Mdoda, Hlengiwe Siwela and Thomas Baloyi at the MBDSC in Motherwell on Monday. MOROCCO has withdrawm from hosting Af-rican Cup of Nations (ACN) in 2015 owing tothe fear of Ebola which is killing thousandsof people in the Western part of Africa cur-

rently. There is speculation that South Africawould take the opportunity to host the ACNif and when SAFA consults government forapproval.

TheSportsMinister, FikileMbalula howev-er, is reported to have counted the costs andreasoned that itwouldn’t bewise for the coun-try to take over from Morocco.

PEExpress Indaba found out fromour read-ers what their thoughts were on whether SAshould take the opportunity to host theAfricaCup of Nations.

ShouldSA take theopportunity tohostAfricaCupofNations?

There is nothing wrong with SouthAfrica taking the chance to hold theACN. We can do it, as we did itbefore, said Sakhiwo Jack (56) ofMotherwell

PEExpress Indaba reporterNCEBADLADLAaskedreaderswhat they thinkofSAhostingACNandthecallbytheMinister.

“Only recently, in 2010, we ran avery successful World Cup. We havethe ability to run the ACN. We didbefore and there is nothing wrongwith us hosting it again. But please,if we do, let some of the matches beplayed here at Nelson Mandela Baystadium. We’d like to watch livematches,” said Jonathan Lucas (44)of Motherwell.

Funeka Kala (32) of Njoli said, “Idon't think we should take ACN. TheMinister is right. My fear is withEbola. And, we’re not in the rightstate economically. So for me, let ususe whatever amount of funds wehave to develop the country and itspeople.”

Thembile Kapi (62) of New Brightonlikes 100% the idea of South Africanot hosting the ACN because of thefear of Ebola. He said, “I hadMinisters talk about this disease andthink that we should not try anythingthat would expose us to Ebola- itlooks deadlier than HIV/Aids. It killspeople in numbers.”

“Why would Morocco not host it (theACN)? Asked Zola Faku (63) of NewBrighton. He explained, “We toowould not want to expose ourselvesto such a deadly disease. Ebola isdangerous, the Minister is right, weshould not even consider it!”

DURING the dark days of Apartheid manymen and women fought for the liberation ofSouth Africa and its people facing racialdegradation and even death at the hands ofevil men, but God resurrected them.

This was the powerful picture painted byReverend Jesse Jackson, considered to beone of the most prominent African Ameri-can leaders during the 70s, 80s and 90s, dur-ing visits to the Nelson Mandela Metropoli-tan University, Zwide Cemetery, the Athe-naeum and the Donkin Reserve.

“Evil men crucified these leaders but Godresurrected them. There are those who canstill tell us their story. Your Mayor (Execu-tive Mayor Benson Fihla) spent fourteenyears on Robben Island and under house ar-rest and it was not for a traffic stop. To havesomeone with the legacy of the anti-Apart-heid struggle like him leading this city is agreat blessing.“NelsonMandela is recognized as the face

of the struggle but there are leaders likeyour Mayor that deserve praise for theirrole. It seems that people are not aware ofhis role,” Jackson said.Jackson also delivered the annual Govan

Mbeki lecture at the Feathermarket Halllast night (Tuesday, 21 October). At a graduation ceremony for municipal

councillors on Monday, Jackson remindedthem that they had an important role toplay to break through the layers of Apart-heid.“I was in Port Elizabeth in 1979 before it

was named Nelson Mandela Bay. Peopleare free today to dowhat theywant withoutfear.“However they are free but not equal.

Equality is the next dimension of our strug-gle as Apartheid has many layers. We stillhave Apartheid of our minds and our bod-

ies,” he said.Known for his opposition against the

Apartheid system and Segregation inAmer-ica, Jackson, among many other achieve-ment,. also negotiated the release of fortyseven Americans and other nationalities af-ter the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq inAugust1990 amongst many other achievements.Jackson said he was very impressed with

the growth and progress in South Africaover the last twenty years.“More people have houses now, drinkable

water and canwork inhighplaces. I amveryimpressedwith the growth of SouthAfrica,”he added.

MELISIZWE Primary School in MasibhankaStreet, NU10 Motherwell needs support fromthe community, government and big businessto make it a better school for better teachingand learning.

This was said last Thursday by the school’sdeputy principal Nomathamsanqa Georgeduring the handing over of school uniform, tracksuits and stationery to 20 pupils of theschool by the municipality speaker Cllr Mar-

ia Hermans who heads the Moral Regenera-tion Movement (MRM).“We are a school based in the most poverty

stricken community in Motherwell. There isa dire need, butmost pressing are ablution fa-cilities and electricity,” George told the gath-ering that included Council speaker, munici-pal officials, Ward 55 Cllr Mthunzi Madolo, the clergy, business representatives, teach-ers, parents, pupils and members of the me-dia.George said Melisizwe Primary School, a

Vusisizwe Trust Institution, was built as a re-

sult of a crisis (and without thorough plan-ning). The school, she added, did not haveenough facilities.According to George, there was an imbal-

ance of 34 teachers (28 females and six males)with only one toilet for each group, while theschoolwasmeant to cater for 800 pupils, therewere currently 1 183 pupils registered .“Our numbers are always high,” said

George. On the need for electricity she said the

schoolwas broken into a number of times andvandalised withwires, coppers and lights sto-

len.“When days were dark it became difficult

for children to see on the board and concen-trate on learning. We need electricity to doour work well and with better security we’lllook after it well,” she said.SpeakerHermans said she saw the need but

was operating on a very small budget. How-ever she stated that she took the concernsfrom all four schools under the MRM Pro-gramme and would submit them to MECThandiswaMarawu andMinister Thulas Nx-esi for assistance. (See report on page 4)

A MOTHERWELL-based IT entrepreneur istackling the challenge of technological illiter-acy head on by offering free computer train-ing for residents of the township at his inter-net café.

The intention is to help people master thebasics around internet usage such as sendingand receiving emails, creating and savingdocuments, sending attachments and usingsocial media.Siphamandla Javu, the owner and founder

of Mzansi Cyber Café, based in NU1 in Moth-erwell, says the chronic lack of basic compu-ter skills he noticed amongst the Café’s clien-tele motivated him to do something to im-prove the technical capabilities of residentsin the area.“It bothered me how many people were

coming into the Cyber Café to do quite simplethings, like attach their CV to an email andsend it off for a job application, but were una-ble to do so without help from my staff.“The same applied to typing up a CV,

searching online job portals, create an emailaccount…the needs are considerable and Ifelt I had to do something to helpmy commu-nity, especially the youngsters, who havevery little chance of finding a decent jobwithout these basic computer skills,” he ex-plains.This prompted Javu to offer free computer

training to residents of the township on a Sat-

urday morning.Interested learners are helped to set up an

email address where necessary, takenthrough email and internet basics, intro-duced to Word and related programmes, andgenerally given a crash course on how to usea computer to improve knowledge, exposureand the chances of finding a job.“There are many accredited training

courses out there, but they are often costlyand require a considerable time investment.Even when PC training is offered for free, many young people do not have the moneyto travel to the college or library where ittakes place, so theymiss out. I wanted to offeran alternative, township-based opportunitythat is quick, simple and very practical in na-ture,” adds Javu.Mandla’s entrepreneurial spirit and gener-

ous nature have seen him win the AfricaSMME Award in 2012 as well as be selectedfor the SAB Kickstart programme, of whichhe is currently a part. His Cyber Café, which offers internet ac-

cess, faxing, typing, graphic design and otherservices, is one component of the business, alongside a full CCTV, PABX, intercom sys-tems and access control installation offeringcalled Mzansi Telecoms.“My dream is to connect every township in

SA to the global village, startingwithMother-well. Technology has the potential to solvemany of our social problems.“It certainly helped me to focus and stay

away from the bad stuff that many of my

peers ended up doing.“If I can share my love of technology with

the youngsters in this community, and helpsomeof them find a calling and interest in life,I would feel very blessed indeed,” he con-cludes.MzansiCyberCafé offers free basic IT train-

ing every Saturday morning from 9am – 1pm.

The training is funded entirely by the busi-ness, and offered on a first come, first servedbasis, with space for ten learners at a time. The business is located in 18cMBILAStreet,

oppositeNU 1Motherwell taxi rank, and inter-estedparties can contactMandla to learnmoreon 074 6122 680 or via email on [email protected] or [email protected]

PRESIDENT of Athletics South Africa, AleckSkhosana lastweekattended the launchof theNelson Mandela Bay City Half Marathon, therichest half marathon in South Africa with apurse of R350 000.

Saturday, November 15 will see the inaugu-ral race starting and finishingatPollokBeachalong the fastest route in South Africa. Thereare two laps and two turning points.Plans and arrangements are heavily under-

way in staging this event which has been ear-marked to equal Comrades and Two Oceansand is supported by the NMB Municipalityand EPA.Already final travel plans are being dis-

cussed for the top Kenyan runners to partici-pate, including the winner of Comrades Lu-duick Mamabolo.

The running circleswithinNelsonMandelaBay are literally abuzz with excitement as towhat this means for Nelson Mandela Bay –placing the citywell and truly on themap, andoffering international and SouthAfrican run-ners another running destination. The driving forces behind the run, Alan

Taylor and Mike Mbambani, both have verydeep roots in athletics in general, but specifi-cally road running.Mike retired from road running in 2002 and

became actively involved with Liberty Nikeas Chairman from 2002 to 2007 and Mr PriceEP Chairman from 2008 to 2011. In 2012 hefounded a development club in Motherwell,Ikhamva Athletics Club of which he is aChairman. He is also a former Deputy President of

EPA, as well as Deputy Chairman of the RoadRunning Commission. Added to that he hasbeen amember of ASACouncil for two terms.

His love for road running development sawhim coming up with one of the most excitingroad races on the EPA calendar in the formof a Freedom Run.Alan, who has been a runner formost of his

life and has taken part in Comrades and TwoOceans and a multitude of marathons, is alsowell known for his long-term contributions tovarious charities. The Lake Farm CharityRun, which has been in existence for 20 years,is his creation. The Big Tree Run is alsoAlan’s idea to assist runners in preparing forultra-marathons like Two Oceans and Com-rades. Funds raised fromthis event aredirect-ed towards Riding for the Disabled. With their combined knowledge and exper-

tise they identified the huge gap betweenyoung track and field athletes and road run-ning inmiddle distance events and they estab-lished this half marathon to address the needfor a structured transition between the two.

Mike said “We can only offer the big prizemoney and fast route, but the race itself willbe relying solely on the media for exposureof the event, and the public in general for bothsupport and participants. With the baking ofthese two entities we can put this event on themap.”With a purse of R350 000 a unique facet of

this event is that category winners will com-pete in 5 year incrementswhilst all other half-marathons have 10 year increments. The in-crements are, for example, 35 – 39, then 40 –44 right up to 70, with substantial prize mon-ey.Any category winner breaking an EP

record will receive R5 000.Medals will be in the form of a key ring and

bottle opener, a handy and useful tool. Goldmedals will be awarded to the first 10 malesand females across the finish line, silver upto position 400 and thereafter bronze medals.

NELSON Mandela Bay Absa PremiershipFootball outfit Chippa United faces a stifftest againt the defending Absa ChampionsMamelodi Sundowns at Nelson MandelaBay stadium today, Wednesday 22 October.

This is after the Roger Sikhakhane led-outfit beat Amazulu at Prince Magogo sta-dium in the KZN at the weekend.Sikhakhane took over the reigns as a

caretaker coach after the newly promotedlocal outfit parted ways with head coachKostadin Papic on September 3. The Ser-bian-born Papic left to join Polokwane City.Sikhakhane has to date won three match-

es outright.Chippa United, better known as the Chilli

Boys, are currently standing at 6th positionin the Absa Premiership Log, just belowthe fifth-placed Amasandawana (Sun-downs).Questions are askedwhether Sikhakhane

has not gained the confidence of the man-agement to make this coaching position hisown.Kick Off reported that the Chilli Boys

owner Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi said theman must first meet his targets before he

would entertain installing him as the per-manent coach of the team.Mpengesi, according to the Kickoff re-

ports, said hewould not be rushed intomak-ing a decision about the future of Sikha-khane.He said, “He is still a caretaker coach and

he is not gonna be appointed now becausehe must first meet his target. He is not far, though, and I can’t disclose anthing be-cause it is a confidential matter betweenthe employer and employee.”Mpengesi, however, it seems, was not

blind to the surprise that Sikhakhane wasable to spring to keep the Chilli Boys firmlyentrenched in the Proffesional SoccerLeague.“One thing that I can tell you is that he

(Sikhakhane) is not far. He has surprisedus as well, you know what I mean. Threewins in a row. Look at the points we have.We have 13 points. In our previous cam-paign [in the PSL in 2012/13] we played 19games. We still had 13 points so now aftereight games, we have 13 points. There issomething good about this team.”At home against former Bafana Bafana

coach Pitso Mosemane’s boys can’t theChilli Boys still deliver? Fans would be ad-vised to buy tickets and see for themselves.
