PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips … yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! … ” Isaiah

We are sinners, and we suffer much because of our sinful condition. It is a struggle! But God’s Grace through Christ helps us overcome the evil of sin.

“Christ died for our sins …” 1 Corinthians In spite of our sin, He calls us! He sends us. He wants us to follow His example, and spend our days on the earth doing good to our brothers and sisters. Like Peter, He sends us to deeper waters.

“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch …” Luke He will challenge us until our last day, to greater things, to grow in virtue. Lord, help us respond to your call, specially help us to be generous in our support for Together In Mission. May we reach out to our poor brothers and sisters, here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Monsignor Lorenzo

Talk to your children about the fine line between obedience and protection

Children learn from an early age that adults are figures of authority — teachers, police officers, bus drivers, babysi ers. We need our children to listen to the people who are in charge of them, but this message must be communicated so that children know it’s okay to s ck up for themselves too. Adult predators may try to use their authority to gain control over their vic ms. Children should know that when it comes to private parts, secrets, and things that seem dangerous or wrong, they should-n’t worry about disobeying the adult in charge, and instead talk to a trusted adult or a parent.

PAPAL INTENTION FOR FEBRUARY

For those suffering illness, and those in need of our prayers Aaron Cesar Alvarado Michael Goodus Lucy Reyes Kerri Grothe Balayan

For those who have gone before us Herman Gallegos Cris na Masamoto Antonio Montoro David Vargas Albert Edward Miller Pedro Pineda Marilyn Jackson

Lord, Hear our prayers.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

God's call to the priesthood, as that of St. Peter and the Apostles, is to be called to be a "fisherman of men," to devote himself in a special way to save others, to administer the mysteries of God through the sacraments. To teach in a more direct way the path that leads to God. The priestly voca ons come from the families, from marriages that live their Chris anity, from the authen c Chris an families. Chris an families should feel honored if they see that their children are born with priestly voca ons. The call of Christ is a personal call that changes our existence, changes our lives.

Blessings, Deacon Carlos

FEBRUARY 10, 2019 PAGE 5

WHEN GOD APPEARS . . . Scripture recounts several instances of God calling persons to be leaders, prophets, apostles, or for other tasks. In most of them, a divine messenger appears to someone and directs them to do X. However, in to-day’s readings, there is no explicit direc ve for Isaiah to deliver God’s message, or for the fishermen to fol-low Jesus. Instead, the accounts focus on the way that God appears. The respec ve calls result from the recogni on of God’s presence in the experience. That recogni on creates an openness to whatever God might want. . . . OUR RESPONSE IS WHAT MATTERS Isaiah’s immediate reac on to the marvelous events he has seen was an acute awareness of his own sinfulness: “Woe is me . . . For I am a man of unclean lips” (Isaiah 6:5). In the ancient world, contact be-tween holy objects or environments and profane things or persons was a contamina on—human be-ings were thought to “contaminate” any place where God’s presence was known to dwell, and hence were unclean. Only a er he volunteers (“Here I am… send me!” [Isaiah 6:8]) does Isaiah learn what he is being asked to do. The catch of fish in Luke lacks the color of Isaiah’s theophany, but it evoked a response from Simon simi-lar to that of Isaiah: “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). He was not alone; “all those with him” were “seized” with astonishment (5:9). The overwhelming catch of fish was just as much an over-whelming experience of God for Simon as were the seraphim for the prophet Isaiah. This is very good news for the rest of us, since our own theophanies are almost never as colorful as Isai-ah’s, or as drama c as an unusually large catch of fish. But they are there, moments in our lives when we be-come acutely aware of God’s presence and under-stand more clearly our own humanity and our need for God’s mercy. That understanding, in turn, can make us open to how God is calling us and to what we are being called to do. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

CUANDO DIOS SE APARECE . . .
