PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,
During these days, we celebrate All Saints and All Souls. The Saints are with us, they pray for us, they protect us. All our Beloved Souls also intercede
for us. We are never alone.
“The Souls of the just are in the hand of God…”Wisdom
We are always in Communion with the Saints and All Souls. We are specially united to them when we participate in Holy Mass and receive Communion. The
Lord brings us all together.
“The Lord is my Shepherd… He guides me in right paths…” Psalm 23
He calls all of us to eternal life!
“We were indeed buried with Him through Baptism into His death… so that… just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father… we too
might live in newness of life…” Romans
Saints of God, pray for us!
All Souls, pray for us!

Monitor ONLINE ACTIVITY on ALL DEVICES
In the past, parents had been advised to place the family computer in an open area such as a kitchen or family room so that they may easily monitor activi-ty. Today, most social contact, especially among
young people, is conducted almost exclu-sively on smart phones and tablets. Technol-ogy continues to rapidly change. All of us
must continue our efforts to stay abreast of the many new mobile
device apps that may be used by young people to com-municate with others and could potentially be used to manipulate or abuse them.
Dialogue and Reconciliation in the Near East
That a spirit of dialogue, encounter, and recon-ciliation emerge in the Near East, where diverse religious communities share their lives together.

NOVEMBER 3, 2019 PAGE 5
Today's reading from the book of Wisdom presents an image of a patient God who rebuke[s] offenders little by little (Wisdom 12:2), an image endorsed by the psalmist, singing of how the LORD is slow to anger and of great kindness, and compassionate toward all his works (Psalm 145:8, 9). The crowd with Jesus, however, grumbles when they see Jesus's kindness and compassion extended to Zacchaeus, who was not just a tax collector, but the chief tax collector --a title that surely emphasizes his standing as a sinner to be scorned. In the second reading, Saint Paul urges the Thessalonians to be worthy of Gods calling, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glori-fied in you (2 Thessalonians 1:12); such people, unlike the crowd in the Gospel, would rejoice at Zacchaeus's determination to change his life after encountering Jesus.
ZACCHAEUS, COME DOWN QUICKLY Why do good things happen to bad people? Does this question strike you as odd? Aren't we usually struggling with the bad things that happen to good peo-ple? True enough, but when good things happen to others, especially those we consider undeserving, it can seem natural to grumble. How do some people always seem to get away with it, while we spend our lives trying to act as God would want? As a tax collector, Zacchaeus cheated and got rich off of his own people. Why does Jesus want to be so nice to him? It s just not fair!
TODAY I MUST STAY AT YOUR HOUSE This problem of good things for bad people can cause as much distress as the problem of bad things happening to good people. Both touch on one of the deepest mysteries of human existence: Is the universe fair? Is God just? This is what is making the crowd grumble about Jesus favoring Zacchaeus. Why is Jesus befriending such a sin-ner? This is the third such complaint about Jesus in Luke s Gospel (see Luke 5: 27 33 and 5:25 15). However, the en-counter with Zacchaeus is different. In the other accounts, Jesus responds to his critics himself, but here, it is Zac-chaeus who speaks up. Not only does Zacchaeus an-nounce compensation for those he has cheated, he vows to give away half of his goods to the poor. At this point in the Gospel, Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem, where he knows he will be put to death. No one else that Jesus meets on this journey has responded as readily as Zac-chaeus to his summons--first, to come down from the tree, then to come down from his wealthy lifestyle and the corruption that supported it. Although he did not trav-el to Jerusalem with Jesus, Zacchaeus clearly understood the demands of discipleship. This story gives us a hint as to why good things might happen to bad people: it is God s patience, with Zacchaeus and with us as well, as God awaits our response, for us to become the disciples God is calling us to be.
