A Letter from the Pastor’s Desk…

Dear Friends:

Neither political party represents the fullness of Catholic teaching. In every election season, if we're

informed by the teachings of our Church, we're called on to discern from a variety of positives and

negatives in both political parties. Years ago, a great Catholic writer named Julie Loesch suggested the

creation of a Catholic political party called “Just Life,” which would incorporate only recognizable

Catholic values, and eliminate those that compromise our values. As you might have guessed, creating

a new national party is no easy task. The two major established parties still represent our only viable

and electable choices.

For me, and for many others, much of what the Democratic Party represents are our concerns as well,

especially when it comes to the poor, the undocumented, and those who desperately need a safety net

in times of trouble. These are surely life issues of immense importance. But for many of us who might

happily embrace many parts of the Democratic platform, we are alienated by the party stance on the

protection of the one million pre-born children whose lives are ended by unrestricted abortion each

year in America. Many of those who are saddened and disheartened are not Republicans or Conserva-

tives, but leaders and members of the Democratic Party itself.

Recently, many such party leaders joined together to publish their serious misgivings about the radical

agenda of the current party leadership in a full-page advertisement in the New York Times. It was a

brave and courageous stance and challenge, and definitely worth reading. I have included a copy on

the back of this page. Please take a few moments to reflect on their very reasoned concerns. Thank

you.

Have a peaceful week.

In the love of Christ, Lord of Life,

Msgr. Jim Lisante

holding an online Level 2 class on Saturday mornings 9:30am-10:45am for those students

who cannot attend in-person.

Level 8 Confirmation Preparation students will begin online on October 21, and then will

return to in-person instruction on January 13.

All other grade levels will be conducted online with a catechist during the regularly scheduled class time. You should have already received a letter in the mail with your child’s class assignment. In October, your child’s catechist will be contacting you via phone or email to add your child to their zoom or google meets virtual classroom.

As always, our program does not offer an independent home study option.

Parish Outreach

Page 8 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish SEPTEMBER 27, 2020

Food Pantry

It’s hard to believe we are entering the month of October already, and Thanksgiving is just around

the corner! Although it seems a bit early, we will begin accepting food donations in preparation for

the Thanksgiving holiday this week. Please take a look at the annual Thanksgiving Flyer posted in

the bulletin for further details. Because of current circumstances, we will only be accepting food

donations for the Thanksgiving holiday gift baskets only until November 6th. We are successful

only because of the love and support of our wonderful parish family. In advance of your generos-

ity, I thank you all once again!

We need your continued help. The pantry shelves have quickly run low these past weeks on the

following items: Beans, Soup, and Jelly. If you are able, please remember your neighbors in need

when you are shopping this week.

Below is a list of foods that we offer our clients. You may drop donations at Outreach, the Rectory

and the Church. There are bins in the vestibule of the church for your convenience. If you feel un-

sure of how and when you can make a donation, for either the Outreach or the Parish, please call

Outreach 516-541-1260 or email [email protected] and I will be happy to speak to you. If you are

interested in donating gift cards, it is most helpful if they are in smaller denominations ($10, $20 or

$25) thereby allowing us to give to more people.

**It is most helpful if you check the dates on your donations – we are unable to distribute food

that is expired.

Gratefully,

Leslie Gretschel

WE NEED YOUR HELP! As Thanksgiving approaches, we ask all to be as generous as possible in contributing to our food pantry.

We will be making Thanksgiving Food Baskets for many needy families in our parish. We will be

assembling Baskets in the next coming weeks. Last year, through your generosity, we were able to

provide Thanksgiving baskets to more than 200 families from within our parish boundary and the

immediate surrounding area. We are anticipating a greater demand this Thanksgiving, as the past year

has seen a marked increase in families looking to us for assistance.

Below is a shopping list of items we will be using to make up the baskets. We will begin accepting

donations now through November 6th. May we ask you to inspect the expiration dates on intended

donations? Please bring the items to the Food Pantry no later than Friday, November 6th, since we will

be distributing Thanksgiving baskets the week of November 16th. Parish Outreach hours are Monday

through Thursday from 10am to 1pm.

Please feel free to donate any or all of the items on the list to complete a basket. Please do not bring any

perishable items including turkeys or hams at this early date, because we do not have the facilities to

store then. Kindly consider a Gift Card in lieu of a turkey. Gift cares would be much appreciated as

they provide for perishable items. Thank you for your continued kindness and help to support this effort.

**This would be an excellent opportunity for Girl Scout Troops, Boy Scout Troops, and

Confirmation Candidates as a Christian Service Project, to participate in this much needed

community effort.**
