PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“His dominion is an everlasting dominion … His Kingship shall not be destroyed …” Daniel

“The Lord is king … He is robed in majesty …” Psalm 93

In this fragile world crucified with sin, it is consoling to know that we have a king, Jesus Christ, who leads us from sin, from death to everlasting life. Even as we struggle with evil, He is with us, lifting us up, with His Grace, His Love. The peace that He gives us makes us rise above all chaos in this world.

“To Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His Blood … to Him be glory and power forever and ever … Amen …” Revelation

He is our King, and one day He will call us out of this world to the place of His kingdom.

“My Kingdom does not belong to this world …” John Lord Jesus Christ, lead us to your kingdom! Monsignor Lorenzo

Make sure holiday shopping is done safely

No ma er how you handle Christmas gi s, you’re likely to have to go to the mall with your kids during the holiday season. In the midst of the crowds, children can easily become separated from their parents. Be alert in crowds and maintain awareness of what others around you are doing. Ins tute the buddy system – have your kids hold your hand or one another’s. Talk with your children about what to do, and who to go to for help, should you become separated. Also, it is important to give your child your cell phone number so mall security can contact you quickly if needed. Lord, Hear our prayers.

WHAT IS ADVENT?

Why are we doing this anyway? Well, this me of the year is a me of prepara on. We bake cookies, decorate the house, put up the tree and the lights, buy and wrap presents, send Christmas cards, and do countless other prepara ons. But do we prepare our hearts?

Advent, at its core, is about ge ng ready to en‐counter Jesus at Christmas. Your journey to that en‐counter begins with recognizing that in the end it all comes down to the mercy of God. No one is perfect. You and I, we don’t just want mercy. We need it.

We’ve heard it before: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only bego en Son…” (Jn 3:16). But have you really thought about it? God came for you. And he came because he loves you. Let him love you this Advent. Let him show you his heart. And let him transform yours. Then, at Christ‐mas, you will be prepared to welcome him in a whole new way.

Retirement Fund for Religious December 8 and 9

The Need: Across the United States, hundreds of

religious communi es lack financial resources sufficient to meet the re rement and health‐care needs of aging members.

Lack of Funds: Many elder religious worked for years for small s pends, leaving a large gap in re‐

rement savings. At the same me, fewer reli‐gious are able to serve in compensated ministry.

Rising Costs: Like many Americans, religious com‐muni es face the monumental challenge of fund‐ing eldercare.

Changing Demographics: By 2028, re red religious are projected to out number wage‐earners by more than three to one.

GRATITUDE NOT GREED

St. Paul wrote for Christians then and now when he warned against greed and materialism.

“For the love of money is the root of all evils …”

1 Timothy 6:10

Despite all evidence, many still believe money brings happiness, yet gratitude for all we have is the real key to happiness.

ARE YOU OR AREN’T YOU? Few things are as frustra ng as not ge ng a “yes” or “no” when we have posed a “yes or no” ques on. Pu ng ourselves in Pilate’s place today, we can feel his frustra on in the debate with Jesus about his kingship and the source of his kingdom. Pilate was a potent and wily Roman authority; he lived by one of the primary lessons of staying in power: know exactly who your opponent is. It is doub ul that the person of Jesus of Nazareth posed much of a threat to Pilate, but what he represented as the social and religious force with which he seemed to be connected very clearly could have been. So Pilate naturally wanted to know who was standing before him, a king or not, and if so, what kind of king? Pilate wanted to know what to get ready for when dealing with this man. We would do well to make Pilate our role model in this regard. IS IT OR ISN’T IT? As Jesus rightly tells Pilate, his kingdom is not of this world. It isn’t. But Chris ans believe that, in Je‐sus Christ, his kingdom has broken into the world, and con nues to be made manifest in the world un‐

l the final day of his glorious return. A very early Chris an term, autobasilea, was used to say that Jesus was the “kingdom in himself” on earth. As we, the Church, celebrate this feast of Christ our King, we recall our own mission through bap sm to be “Christ’s kingdom in ourselves” and to do our own part to con nue introducing his reign wherever it is not yet a part of this world. A look back at our whole Church year from this final Sunday will show us that this reign in Christ is one of love, of pro‐claiming salva on, of healing, of forgiving and rec‐onciling, of humble service, of self‐giving. We pray “Your kingdom come” because it isn’t completely here yet, which is why we likewise pray “Your will be done” so that it might be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

¿ERES O NO ERES?

Juan ¡Señor Jesucristo, llévanos a tu Reino!

Tú y yo, no solo queremos misericordia. ”(Jn 3:16).
