PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“ Woe to the complacent in Zion!... Lying upon beds of ivory… stretched

comfortably on their couches… they drink wine from bowls and anoint them-

selves with the best oils… Now they shall be the first to go into exile and their

wanton revelry shall be done away with…” Amos

The root of all the problems in the world is selfishness. Selfishness destroys all

relationship with others and with God. The joy of life is only found in good rela-

tions with others, with God. Most of the misery in the world could be solved if

we could value the importance of sharing, giving.

The tragedy of a selfish life is seen in the rich man of the Gospel. He lived a life

totally focused on himself, and at his death he found himself in the place of tor-

ment.. He ignored Moses and the prophets, lost his soul, lost the eternal reward

given to those that care for others.

St. Teresa of Calcutta, teach us to care for others, pray for us!

BOUNDARIES ARE REALLY IMPORTANT

Boundaries are critical, for you and for the chil-

dren in your care. Establishing and maintaining

boundaries helps teach children their im-portance, gives them the tools to establish their

own, and to form appropriate and healthy rela-

tionships with other adults. You can avoid even

a misconception of inappropriate behavior by upholding the boundaries you have established

for yourself, allowing you more freedom to care

for the children in your life.

SEPTEMBER 29, 2019 PAGE 5

Don't delude yourselves, Jesus says through the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. We really are supposed to care for others. It is not enough to go to Mass and occa-sionally serve at a parish or outreach function. We cannot remain complacent and consider ourselves followers of Jesus. No matter how much or how little material wealth we have, we always have something to give--our time and attention, care, and, when possible, our money. The way we treat and care for others, especially the poor and vulnerable, is the manner in which we show our love of God. As disciples, we must pursue righteousness, devo-tion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Jesus calls us to see and respond to the least among us, because, as God s children, we are all part of one another. HE MISSED THE POINT The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is a powerful and painful cautionary tale. The Gospel narrative paints a vivid picture. We can imagine the poor man, Lazarus, lying at the door of the rich man. We can see the rich man in our mind s eye, well-dressed and well-fed. The rich man has walked past Lazarus every day but has never really seen him. Even though he knows Lazarus name, he does not matter to the rich man. Lazarus matters to God, however. The rich man did not only fail to care for Laza-rus in life. He expected Lazarus to serve him in the after-life. He is totally focused on himself. Only after he realiz-es the eternal consequences of his failure to care does he think of his brothers. And even then, he expects Lazarus to be his messenger! The rich man missed the point of the commandments and the witness of the prophets, in life and in death. SEE LAZARUS IN OUR MIDST As people of faith, Lazarus must matter to us as well. It is impossible to hear this parable without thinking of the poor and homeless in our cities, on our streets. We may not know them, but they have names. We may not under-stand their circumstances, but they are our brothers and sisters. Jesus life and teaching show us that God s way is the way of love. Jesus sacrificed everything on the cross, and leads us to give beyond what we think we can or should, to pour ourselves out for the sake of others. How much like the rich man are we? We cannot solve all of the issues of poverty and homelessness in our cities, country, and world. But we are called to do something,

¡Gracias!

Bulletin

“The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration. In all its activities the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelizers.”

Pope Francis

Since its founding, our parish’s primary mission has been to minister to and serve the families in our community. Through the Called to Renew campaign we have an opportunity to address some of our most pressing needs. After much thought, pray-er, and consultation we have decided to use our funds to address the following: •Church Renovations: replace the roof, repaint the church

•Pastoral Center: remodel the kitchen; replace the vents, concrete, and drains

•School Exterior: resurface the parking lot and repair the grading and drainage; install a fixed canopy; fix the sprinklers, re-sod the field, and replace the front fence

•School Interior: furnish the multipurpose room, remodel the school and faculty restrooms, remodel the fac-ulty lounge, install air conditioning in the gym In the coming weeks, our Ambassadors will be calling families to explain the Campaign. We hope you will welcome their invitation to meet with open hearts. Thank you!
