PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

I thank God for having me here with you. In the very short time I have been here, I have gotten to dialogue with many of you. I feel I have bonded with this community. As we work on maintaining our beautiful Church, I ask that you consider supporting the re-furbishing of pews in our Church.

We are not making new pews, just doing the required up-keep of the ones we have. The cost of the project is $225,000. The pew unit cost is $2,500. If even family in the parish gives $100, we will easily cover the cost. If we take care of our church, it will con-tinue to be a place of prayer, where many people, now and in the future, will nourish their relationship with our living God.

As you make our donations, in a blank envelope, please write your name and indicate that your donation is for the “pews” and give us a family name or name of a person, living or deceased, that you want us to remember in our framed list of donors. We will offer Holy Mass, perpetually, for all these people and all benefactors of our Church.

Let us work together to carry out the Work of God. All of you are in my prayers.

“I will make you a light to the nations …” Isaiah Monsignor Lorenzo

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, pray for us!

Keeping children safe during summer

During the summer, children may spend me at a camp or program. It is important to monitor for poten al risks when a child enters a new environment. Ask to see the organiza ons wri en policies for the adults who will be supervising your child, check if there are procedures in place for emergencies and make sure there is a system for open communica on between parents and organiz-ers/leadership. Taking me to check these and other safeguards is key to building safe and nurturing experi-ences for children. OUR LADY SCHOOL NEWS My brothers and sisters, John the Baptist teaches us that greatness is in being oneself, in the fidelity to the mission God has entrusted to us, when they confuse him with the Messiah. John rectifies immediate-ly "I am not the Christ... I baptize with water, but there is someone in your midst who you do not know. He comes after me and I don't deserve to loose one of his sandals strap. He will baptize in the fire, in the breath of the Holy Spirit." Blessings, Deacon Carlos

MINDFULNESS

When we make efforts to be fully aware and

awake to everything we do and all that surrounds

us, we become mindful of God’s

us.

This takes prac ce, joyful effort,

RIPE AND READY  Teachers and coaches know how to modify their tac cs to reach various learners. God does the same with us, perfectly assessing the precise interven on we need in par cular situa ons. God sent Jesus into the world at the ripest moment in human history. Although plenty of prophets, for centuries, had foretold the coming of the Messiah, the profound honor of mee ng Christ himself fell to John the Bap-

st. The Gospel of Ma hew tells us what this blessed prophet was like: “John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.” Out of an infinite variety of people throughout all of hu-man history, God chose John the Bap st, in his wild-ness, to make us ready to meet the Son of God. LEAST LIKELY TO SUCCEED   Few, if any, of us would be likely to choose John the Bap st as the one to prepare the world to meet its savior. Most of us would feel awkward around John, given his food and clothing choices, and his constant reminders to repent of our sins. John’s own father, Zechariah, doubted God’s providence when he learned his wife Elizabeth would give birth to John. As a punishment, the angel Gabriel re-moved Zechariah’s ability to speak. Luke’s Gospel reading today recounts the moment when Zechari-ah acknowledges God’s plan for his son. He sup-ports Elizabeth—who had trusted in God’s provi-dence all along—and regains his voice. Zechariah rejoices in God’s wisdom, praising God to all their neighbors. John’s story reminds us how our ins ncts o en run counter to God’s wisdom. Though we avoid awkward and difficult people, God chooses a locust-ea ng man to show us the way to Jesus. The lesson of John the Bap st is never to underes mate the power and wisdom of God. This inspires hope! We, like John, are “fearfully, wonderfully made” (Psalm 139). God has beau ful plans for each of us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

you like to participate

more fully during Mass? Try

joining a choir.

Come and sing praises to our

Lord at the Sunday 5pm Mass. Meet in the Carey

Center at 4pm on Sunday and find out how you

can praise God in song.

Sunday, July 1

Next Sunday our parish will participate in the Peter’s Pence

collection which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sis-ters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. Thank you for your generosity. Envelopes are at the doors.
