Outotec has long experience from Flash Furnace

process control. In the recent years emphasis has been

put on developing easy-to-use process control and

monitoring softwares, so called Expert Systems. The

Outotec® Sentinel system is an online furnace integrity

monitoring system for cooling elements, and the

Outotec® Process Advisor is an online dynamic processcontrol model with an operator user interface. These

softwares can be integrated with the Outotec Proscon®

automation system and together they form a complete

process automation platform for a smelter operation.

Outotec® Sentinel



Outotec® Sentinel enhances the furnace integrity bymonitoring the process conditions and the furnace

wear by analyzing information measured from the

cooling waters. It protects the furnace by alarming

on water flow drops, heat load peaks and excessive

return temperatures. It can indicate abnormal process

conditions such as buildup, and estimate the condition

of furnace refractory lining. Outotec® Sentinel solution

improves operational safety and helps to reduce water

consumption.

The Outotec® Sentinel system can be installed to

monitor all kinds of water cooled metallurgical furnace.

It may follow the whole unit, or only the most critical

parts.

The heat load pattern and analysis is graphically

displayed in the Outotec® Sentinel operation display.

The colored furnace 3D-models are very illustrative and

informative for the operators, as well as selected trend

lines of the current or the history data.

Through the integrated remote connection possibility it

is possible to online assist the client with any issues

after the startup.

Patented instrumentation

New automated cooling water headers are used to

measure the heat loss of each individual cooling water

circuit cost-effectively. The headers use patented,clever measuring system – with only a few instruments

an extensive amount of data is gained. Each circuit is

directed to the measurement loop one by one utilizing

an automated three way valves. Both the investment and

maintenance costs are significantly lower compared to

fully instrumented traditional headers.

Safety

Water and molten metal is a very hazardous

combination. Continuous follow up helps to notice andcorrect the abnormal conditions in advance. Individual

alarm and warning limits and be set for each variable

and each cooling water circuit. The Outotec® Sentinel

monitoring systems can detect even small leaks of

individual circuits.

Water optimization

The furnace feed composition affects the heat losses

of the furnace, the heat load distribution is not uniform

over the whole furnace, and it will also increase with

the wear of refractory brick lining. The amount of

circulating cooling water shall regularly be adjusted

according to wearing and heat losses during the furnace

campaign life in order to

maintain optimal water

usage in every part of

the furnace at all times.

Header Selection

The modular Outotec

Sentinel Headers can be

of model S (simple, no

measurements), M (moderate, header measurements

only) or A (automatic, measurements for each individual

circuit). S- and M –models can be easily upgraded to

advanced A-models. Headers are equipped with 18, 24,

30 or 36 cooling circuit inlets and outlets.
