As a recipient of Race to the Top (RttT) funds, the Marlington Local School District is dedicated to being transparent, accountable and innovative with the monies we’ve been given. March/April• TheMarlingtonMiddleSchoolandMarlboroElementarydata

teams completed the Decision Framework protocol developed by the state and met on March 12 to begin creating strategic plans for their buildings.

• Marlington’sprofessionaldevelopmentplanwasapprovedbythe state. We are now planning for next year’s professional development, which will include topics such as value-added report analysis, standards work and additional data analysis.

• InApril,theStarkCountyEducationalServiceCenter,alongwith each of the districts in Stark County, was awarded the Higher Ed/High School grant through RttT. Through this three-yeargrant,areahighschoolswillpartnerwithfivelocaluniversities to help align high school course expectations with higher education placement expectations.

• TheOhioDepartmentofEducationreleasedan“ApprovedListof Assessments” districts can select from when developing the value-added component to our teacher evaluation. Marlington’s RttT Transformational Team will be reevaluating our current teacher evaluation, as well as working with the administrative team to develop the newly required administration evaluation. English ReminderAll freshmen in honors and general English 9 received a MLA

research guide this semester, and all juniors in honors and general English 11 received an APA guide. The students paid a fee to buy these, and they will be used for two years. Please emphasize to your students the importance of keeping these in good shape and not throwing them away over the summer.

Marlington high school Art show“A night of Creative Minds”

Please join us for the Marlington High School Art Show! This event will be held in the high school gym on May 15 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Feel free to come anytime within show hours to walk around, socialize and view a wide range of expressive artwork. You will experience a variety of photography and artwork created by our very own imaginative students. Help celebrate Marlington’s appreciation for the arts and our talented student artists. This event is open to anyone and everyone.

Senior Exam Permission SlipsThe following procedures must be followed for senior exams:

Tuesday, May 29 seniors must be in attendance all day. Wednesday, May 30 seniors may leave after their last exam if the following procedures are followed: Student must have a note signed by their parents (regardless of age or status) with the time they are allowed to leave on Wednesday. The note must be turned in no later than Friday, May 25 to their first period teacher. If the above procedures are not followed, students must be in attendance all day Wednesday.

Underclassmen Will Receive Permission Slip Form at School

AthleticsSpring sports are quickly approaching the midpoint of

the season. Boys’ tennis is currently 3-10, but looking for a strongfinishtotheseasonastheygainexperience.Thisyear’syouthful softball team is hitting the ball well, but struggling to stop the opponent and are currently 2-11. The baseball team is also young and is currently 4-9. The girls’ track team is making strides in terms of members and in competitiveness on the track. They are currently 1-3. The boys’ track team continues its NBC dominance as they are 4-0 and looking towards capturing yet another NBC title. Following the winter sports season, we have a 4-point lead in the NBC all-sports competition. Hopefully we will be able to capture our 7th all-sports award.

The ffA in Columbus, ohioThe Marlington FFA Chapter competed in the Novice

Parliamentary Procedure contest on April 14 at Ohio State University. It is an FFA career development event for freshman and sophomores in which members utilize parliamentary law to conduct a pretend orderly meeting during competition. Representing Marlington were sophomores Brittney Costa, Katie Farnham, Rachel Martin, Ashley Royer, and Miranda White; and freshmen Staci Faverty, Monica Kurtz and Abbi Whiteman. The team was named District 3 FFA Champions and were invited to the state contest as a top 10 team. After thepreliminaryround,theyqualifiedforfinalsandreceived4thplace! Sophomore Jacob Tucker and junior Megan Conrad accompanied them as student coaches. The team was advised and coached by FFA advisor, Mrs. Jessica Helsinger.
