NIMUN 6 is off to amemorable start. The
truly evocativeinaugural session set
the tone for thedebate that was to
follow. Theencouraging words ofour Chief Guest, Mrs.
Amin, were areminder to all those
present of theimmediate
significance of thetask they were about
to undertake. Dynamized
committees were fullto bursting with
enthusiasm that haslead to both heateddebate and cherished
moments oflightheartedness.
Truly living up to ourmotto, ‘in pursuit of ahumane world,’ theethos that prevailedwas a refreshing one:a spirit of unity withinthe school body thatcomes from NIMUN’s
standing as astudentlead event.
It has been aprivileged to witnessthe level of debateand the tact of thedelegates in tacklingthese diplomatic
concerns. We are proud of thelegacy that NIMUN
holds and thebenchmarks it will go
on to set.

Topic 1: Strategic Arms Limitation TalksTopic 2: Nuclear proliferation of North Korea
The International Press Corps is perhaps the mostunique of simulations at NIMUN. The journalists ofthe conferences, a group of ‘enthusiastic andinformed’ delegates as described by their chair, had full access to their assigned committees. Asacting representatives of news agencies, at leastone submission from each organization was
anticipated by the chair. Group discussions takenhalf an hour before sessions were adjourned, challenged and revitalized their approaches to
reporting.
Addressing the nuclear proliferation of North Korea, the
Disarmament and International Security Committee was a
hotbed for debate, and perhaps amongst the most exciting
of the day, with Germany questioning North Korea’s right to
nuclear weapons, asking whether they planned on
‘destroying the world.’ Delegates were in for quite the jolt
when the Chairperson of the IPC stepped in as a guest
delegate of North Korea. Tearing up and, in the next
instant, threatening to nuke South Korea before storming
out in a memorable exit. Considerably energized by this
turn of events, the committee immediately went into crisis
when CNN reported that a Chinese ship containing nuclear
enrichment materials was apprehended in North Korea. An
invigorating debate!

Topic 1: Impact of the disputes in the Crimean regionTopic 2: Refugee movement on the Global Economy
Topic 1: Impact of hosting the Tibetan government in exileTopic 2: Neocolonialism in Africa
Perhaps the most happening committee thus far,the delegates of ECOFIN were in for a surprisewhen the delegate of Russia was kidnapped. Thefocus of caucuses was primarily on the ownershipof Crimean region (that would subsequently affectthe economy). This radical turn of events sparkeddispute in the committee that rose to a crescendowhen the delegate of China was debarred from the
committee for his inconsiderate comments.
Tackling the burning issue of hosting the Tibetan government
in exile, the delegates of SPECPOL had wellarticulated insight
to offer on the treatment of Tibetan refugees. A crisis arose
when it was reported that the United States and China
collaborated to kidnap the Dalai Lama: what followed was a
blame game between countries, and most shockingly, total
abandonment of foreign policy by the United States, who made
a formal statement conveying his full support of China’s
actions. Eventually, delegates were able to arrive at a
consensus, forming two working papers, of which the paper
‘Pinacolada’ was passed as their final resolution. Cheers!

Topic 1: Conflict in Middle EastTopic 2: Threat of Faceless Terror
Topic 1: The Gulf war (’91)Topic 2: Indo-Pak War (’71)
The IsraelPalestine and the Syrian crises were majorareas of focus over the course of the debate for theSecurity Council; the delegates of which addressedconflict in the Middle East. The delegates of France,
China, Russia, and Israel stood out for their adherenceto foreign policy and rigorous involvement throughoutthe discussion. The issues addressed called for a widerange of research: moving from economic and socialimpacts of the Syrian War to Conflicts in Saudi Arabiaand Iran. The delegates rose to the occasion, making
for a memorable conclusion to Day 1’s events.
The area of concern for the HSC was thepolitical insurgency in East Pakistan. Hundreds
of Mukti Bahini soldiers were killed in thebombing of a military base for which the blamewas on France. France was furious and statedthat ‘we wear our insignia with pride; we wouldnever hide it. Just because the insignia was onthe aircraft carrier, doesn’t mean we wereinvolved with it in any way whatsoever.’ Thedelegate of France was later asked to write anofficial apology letter to the dais for being crude
in his speech.

Topic 1: Capital punishment and implementing the protection forfacing death penalty
Topic 2: Children rights in the African region
Topic 1: Efficient management of increased resources to combat green house gas emissions
Topic 2: Combating climate change around the world
The Human Rights Council discussed the ever
controversial issue of capital punishment. Libya stood out
as an advocate for the same. The tide of debate altered
when it was reported the United States had 10 prisoners
executed by lethal injection. The delegate came to his
country’s defense, claiming the drugs used were legal.
Alternatives to capital punishment, such as brainwashing
were deliberated upon, and in the end, Resolution 1.0 was
passed. It called for countries to stand against alternatives
to capital punishment that would prove economically
disadvantageous; though a handful of nations were
dissatisfied with this rather reductionist conclusion to the
debate.
UNEP mainly discussed the repercussions
of greenhouse gas emissions and the effects
of climate change on the economy of
countries. Surprisingly, USA and China were
the top emitters of CO. The committee also
talked about the implementation of green
buildings. UNEP’s draft resolution Vada Pav
supports the expansion of green
technologies in order to mitigate the
amounts of Carbon Dioxide produced.
