On Thursday evening LISD honored its retiring

faculty in a beautiful ceremony. With the pomp and circumstance of an evening at the Oscars the “Red Carpet Affair” was a terrific tribute to these employees. The honorees included

Mrs. Kay Norton, Mrs. Karin Sloan, Mrs. Nancy artinez, Mrs. Linda

Wicox, and Mr. Wirlfred Vilanova. Additional retirees unable to attend the ceremony

include Mrs. Irene Arroya, Mrs Luella Conway and Mrs. Kathy Kyzar. Our very own Mr.

Michael Richard did a terrific job as the emcee. In addition to the retirees being recognized by their colleagues and the school board, service

pins were also issued to staff members.

service dept. to the retirement committee and janitorial staff for working so hard to make it a

very special evening.

Mentors and Their Students Honored  

On May 25, mentors and the students who participated in the Lackland I.S.D. Mentoring Program celebrated the successful conclusion of the beneficial program for the current school year.  In the EyeMax Theater, the mentors from the base, our students and their parents, referring teachers and other district staff attended a ceremony during which each mentor and student received special 

recognition for outstanding service and participation throughout the school year.  The year ended with the recognition of six 2nd – 6th grade students, although more students started but were not able to 

continue.  After the ceremony, all enjoyed delicious cake and ice cream; then the mentors and students said their final goodbyes, each leaving with a sense of fulfillment and pride from this rewarding 

experience.  This year’s dedicated group of mentors definitely will have a long‐lasting, positive effect on the students’ confidence, grades, and social skills. 

 

If any caring adult, who has access to the base, would like to participate, there is always a need.  After applying and passing a security clearance, each mentor meets with a student after school in the district media center, monitored by a district staff member, for about one hour a week to work on homework, to listen to the student read, or just sit and talk about everyday activities.  The supportive one‐to‐one relationship that develops over the school year definitely will have a measurable life‐long impact on both participants and the district is extremely grateful for all the effort put forth in the mentoring 

program and the positive difference it makes.

Mentor Program

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.

ROCK CANDY FOR A CAUSE The Family and Community Service Class has been busy completing its last project of

the year. Students decided that they wanted to make something for the troops overseas. Mrs. Duron suggested that they make rock candy, so students learned

what rock candy is, how to make it, and quickly discovered that they liked it! Students boiled water, karo syrup, and sugar to the temperature of 300 degrees,

added the flavoring, and then poured the candy mixture over marble slabs covered in powdered sugar. Students waited for the candy to cool and began cracking it into

bite size pieces. Some of the flavors included strawberry, pina colada, apple, blueberry, cinnamon, and cotton candy. Students packaged over 150 bags of

candy to send to a squadron in Afghanistan.

On Saturday the 21st the Lackland Chess Team competed in its final tournament of the year at the Guadalupe Community Center. Over 80 kids from schools all over the city made up 4 divisions. In

the tough elementary division 3 of our kids got individual ribbons, and the team earned enough points to edge out Keystone and win the second place team trophy. Several Lackland 6th graders

make up our middle school team and they dominated their division beating several older students. Individually they took home all of the top trophies including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies in the A

and B divisions. For the 3rd consecutive tournament they easily won the 1st place team trophy! As the team sponsor, I am so proud of all of the kids who have worked very hard to get better and better

over the last couple of years. Way to go!

On Tuesday Lackland Elementary held its 2nd annual “Mercado”. It was a colorful and fun filled event as 6th graders sold their wares and other students and parents spent their

pesos. The entire school was entertained if the morning by the wonderful youth mariachis Los Tigre’s. Our Spanish teacher Mrs. Norma Singleterry would like to thank all of the

people and volunteers who helped make it a wonderful day for all!

C.O.W. PROJECTS! (Countries of the World)

6th graders worked for two months to be able to present their knowledge and creativity to other students from various grade‐levels. 

On April 1st, all 6th graders began to research a country of their choice. Students were to find out about their country’s economy, culture, government, customs, foods, sports, 

scientist, and much, much, more. After two months of intense research, students were to create a travel brochure to entice others to come visit their country. Power‐points and poster boards were also created so others could also learn about different countries of the world. Most of all, students were able to compare different countries with the great 

country of the Unites States of America.

On the final day of SFA Reading, Ms. McCaskill made pancakes for her class. What a way to end SFA for the year! Yum, yum, the pancakes were good! Thanks, Ms.
