Coach Mike Flores Receives Outstanding Coach Award

Coach Mike Flores, Stacey’s Head Basketball Coach and Lackland Elementary Physical Education Teacher has received the Don

ach Award for 2010-2011 for Class A Division 1. The Texas

Association of Basketball Coaches selected Mr. Flores for this great honor and will officially present this award to him on May 20, 2011.

Mr. Flores led the Stacey Eagles to the Regional Finals this school year and led Stacey to its first ever State Tournament appearance in

2009.

The Lackland Family is extremely proud of Mr. Flores and congratulates him on

being selected as the top Class A Division 1 coach in the state! Go Eagles!

1. Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas 2.How long have you been at Stacey? I have been at Stacey for 10 years. 3. What is your favorite memory about Stacey High School? The new school year, dinners away from school, and the office birthday celebrations. 4. What did you like about Stacey? The dedication and hard work from all of the staff and that everyone is treated like family. Dr. Roper’s cooking and peach cobbler. 5. What can you tell me about your family? My husband and I have a daughter and twin son, we also have 1 grand-daughter and 2 grandsons. They moved to Atlanta, Georgia 5 years ago, and this summer they will me moving back to San Antonio. 6 .If you wanted to travel around the world, where would you go? I would like to visit Washington D.C., our National Capitol. 7. What is your favorite color? Red is my favorite color. 8. What is your favorite food? I love Chinese food 9. What are you going to be doing in your retirement? I will be spending time with my grandchildren and doing some traveling. 10. Is there anything else you like to add? I will miss working with the students, parents, and faculty.

Tech News Our first Kindle e-book reader was presented at the start of the District Technology Committee meeting to Jackie Smith, an

avid reader from our Stacey Jr/Sr High School on May 2nd, 2011. Janie Pickett, our Media Center librarian/facilitator,

has worked tirelessly to get the Kindle e-book readers operational and loaded with both audio books and e-books. Most of the Kindle e-book readers and electronic media (e-books and audio books) were purchased through our local

Teacher Technology Grants. Some of the Kindle e-book readers will be available through the Media Center for student (maybe

even staff) check out. Please check with our Media Center staff for details about using a Kindle e-book reader. A few Kindle e-book readers will be used by Donnis Todd and Brian

Knobloch to support their campus reading programs. Mr. McDowell, Director of Technology, states, “This project is worth the efforts and investment if it helps more of our students become better readers. The overall goal of our

Kindle e-book initiative is to encourage students to read.”

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.

STACEY PROFILE: Mrs. Waleska Rivera By: Brianne Kenny

1. How long have you been a teacher's aide? I have been a teacher’s aide for 3 years. 2. What made you want to be a teacher’s aide?

I started working as a substitute teacher on the Elementary campus, and once I had the opportunity to start subbing here I loved it. I like to help students and know that I can make a difference in their lives. Also, having summers off is a plus.

3. Do you have any kids? I have two kids, an 11 year old girl named Destany and a 10 year old boy named Darrian. I also have two Golden Retrievers that I consider my babies, Simba and Cowboy.

4. What school did you go to? I attended the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus.

5. What do you like to do for fun? I love going shopping. I also enjoy spending time with my kids and play with my dogs in the backyard.

6. Do you have any hobbies? Actually, I don’t have any hobbies. I like to do some gardening once in

a while. 7. If you could be any animal in the world what would you be?

I like many animals but because I love the ocean I would have to pick the killer whale. They are beautiful and intelligent animals.

8. What’s your favorite school subject? My favorite school subject is math.

9. What’s your least favorite school subject? I don’t have a least favorite school subject.

MARVELOUS MASKS 6th grade students have been learning about the Huichol Indians and the beautiful masks they make. The Huichol

Indians live in the remote mountains of Nayarit and Jalisco, Mexico where they were untouched by the Spanish invaders.

Each Huichol mask, in addition to being a beautiful work of art, has its own historical and spiritual significance

because the patterns reflect designs and images sacred to their study of the universe where religion, life, and art are

combined. These beautiful, one-of-a-kind beaded masks are made by pressing tiny glass beads into natural beeswax which is first spread over a wooden form. Each week students worked on meticulously placing beads onto templates which were later fused together with heat. These mini masks are examples of

the original masks. Look for these at Mercado!!!
