Dance & Jazz Evening

Page 5: eNews issue 23 May 2014

The Cormack Hall was the perfect venue on Thursday 8 May for the annual Dance & Jazz evening. Yet again, the Jazz Band set the tone for a fun and lively evening. The programme featured some exquisite ballet and pointe work, as well as modern dance choreographed by the girls themselves. It was an excellent showcase of the high standard of work that Georgians achieve in performing arts.

AS DRAMA

The AS Drama examined performances took place on Thursday 15 May. The girls performed to an external adjudicator starting with their 2 minute monologues, followed by an abridged version of 'Shakers' by John Godber and Jane Thornton - a comedy set in a 1980s Cocktail bar.

Just a week after the Evening of Jazz and Dance, and the day after the Second Years attended a concert of music by Ravel, Debussy and Saint-Saens at the Royal Festival Hall, we held our Junior Concert in Chapel on Thursday 15 May.

The evening provided an opportunity to see our youngest performers at work and a chance to witness their efforts and potential so far this year. Victoria Wyatt got the evening off to a good start with John Ireland’s song ’Spring Sorrow’ and then Sadvi Subramaniam played Einaudi’s ‘Le Onde’ with great conviction. Hannah Schick played and sang her own composition ‘I Wonder’ and other very enjoyable vocal numbers were performed by Camelia Joel-Davison and Alexandra Povarova.

Neat finger work from Annabel Sheridan and Maria Gushchina playing lovely piano pieces and Louisa Hughes- Penny playing the flute contrasted with the first outing of The St George’s Songbirds with Miss May, who performed a section of ‘Matilda’. Finally, the First Year choir led by Mrs Watson sang ‘Can you Feel the Love Tonight’ and ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow'. A very enjoyable evening.

Chepstow Castle & Tintern Abbey

On Wednesday 7 May the whole of First Year accompanied by Mr Lee, Miss Daws and Miss Jackson travelled to Wales to visit Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey. The journey wasn’t as long as expected and although the rain gave us a taste of real Welsh weather, it wasn’t a wash out.

We went to Chepstow Castle first, which was the first stone built castle in Britain started in 1067 on the orders of William the Conqueror as he tried to conquer Wales. It was in use up until the Civil War when its mighty defences were finally defeated by canon. The castle is on the edge of the River Wye and you can still see the strong medieval defences and then the parts added later for comfort. It was easy to see the relationship between power and the castle and how the king used the feudal system to demand and keep loyalty. We also got to see the primitive loos that stick out over the river!

We had lunch at a park, and got a bit wet, but as we drove the 10 minutes along the Wye Valley to Tintern Abbey, which appears out of nowhere as a great Gothic ruin, the sun came out. It is a stunning sight and you can see why the romantic poets of the Victorian times used it as inspiration.

Chepstow Castle & Tintern Abbey

We had plenty of time to explore the ruins and imagine the monks who lived and worked there for hundreds of years. We got a taste of the destructive power of Henry VIII in preparation for history lessons next year, and marvelled at how much remained nearly 500 years after the Dissolution.

We had time in the shop and then an ice-cream in the now sunny afternoon, before returning home just in time for Prep.

Parent Association Ball 2014

A huge thank you to the Parent Association Ball Committee who organised a superb event on Saturday 17 May 2014. The weather could not have been better for drinks overlooking the pitches at the Guards Polo Club and the meal that followed was wonderful. The fi nal fi gures are still being counted but we stand to have raised substantial sums, not just for the benefi t of our girls, but also for www.w4youth.org.uk, a fantastic community Youth Project in West London and Dundlod School in India. Thank you to all the parents who attended and made it such a memorable event.
