Left to right: Juniors Jeremy Shields, Tristan Spivey, Emmit Jefferies, Edward Kim and Hamzah Qureshi (pictured with chaperone Mr. Zach Roberts) were honored with Good

Citizenship Awards by the Union League of Philadelphia.

The Youth Work Foundation of the Union League of Philadelphia presented its historic Good Citizenship Awards to five CFS students at a banquet on May 12, 2015, held at the League. The students selected are all currently juniors: Jeremy Shields, Tristan Spivey, Emmit Jefferies, Edward Kim and Hamzah Qureshi. Mr. Zach Roberts served as their faculty chaperone and Mr. Ned Sherrill, Head of School, also attended.

Prior to the banquet, the students spent a day in Philadelphia with other honored students from throughout the region where they participated in workshops and presentations that focus on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The Youth Work Foundation also provides these students with citizenship training and scholarship opportunities. Congrats to all!

Who Do We Appreciate?

It was Teacher Appreciation Week at Church Farm School this month, and the week was filled with activities both fun and filling. Our all-school Middle States update meeting kicked off with cake and refreshments, plus Rabi Gardner and Kristen Boone held teacher

trivia and a raffle to engage the community in learning more about the personal and professional lives of our wonderful faculty and staff. Finally, the Academic office treated everyone to custom CFS blankets. We truly could not fulfill our mission without the fantastic faculty that we are so thankful to have!

Scenes from Campus

Mr. Jeff Holton took his environmental studies class to Pickering Creek last Friday for a stream health study. Students learned methods for capturing macro invertebrates. Mr. John Ceschan's engineering and design class is currently building a bridge near the large pond behind the woodshop that will enable guests to safely cross the small stream that runs through our property.

Mr. Kevin Korb's art class took to the butterfly garden for inspiration, recently. The butterfly garden was planted two seasons ago by faculty and students and was a cross-discipline collaboration as part of the school's STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) initiatives.

What do you get when you mix National Strawberry Month with National Buttermilk Biscuit Day? The best dessert day ever! Thanks to Sodexo for bringing in a nutritionist to spread awareness, and for our baker Katie for providing the delicious biscuits!

The Piano and Voice Recital was once again a wonderful event showcasing the musical talents of our students, including (pictured left to right) Rus Murphy '15, Geno Go '18 and Edward Kim '16.

Mr. Art Smith's 8th grade science class recently dissected a worm. Here, Nick Ramdeo '19 shows off the various elements of the earthworm.

Ms. Rabi Gardner and Ms. Nicole Campbell organized a "Murder Mystery Dinner" whereby students had to play various parts in the mystery, including the investigating officers, men and women at the dinner party, and of course, the deceased (good job, Anthony Martinez!).

Students Honored by Rotary

Five students received "Student of the Month" awards from the Rotary Club of Chester County for their dedication to "service above self," for the months of January through May. Pictured above are De'Shaun Ruiz '15 and Timothy McParland '15. Also congrats to Mohammed Emun '17 and Frankie Gonzalez '15 (pictured with Rotary's John Gillespie), plus Edward Kim '16. Nominated by CFS faculty and staff, recipients receive a plaque

and attend an upcoming Rotary International Club meeting, which brings together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.

Honor Council Spends Day with Anthony Grey

We hosted Anthony Gray, president and CEO at the Institute for Global Ethics of Rockport, Maine, in early May. Gray spoke at Chapel about his personal path to his current role, which began in Stamford, Connecticut, as the son of a mentally ill mother who was shuffled between foster care and group homes until, at the age of 15, he emancipated himself. Gray explained that the "razor-thin line" that divides those who make it, and those that don't, is sound and ethical decision-making and core values. Following his presentation, Gray met with the school's Honor Council, their advisors, CFS Ethical Literacy Coordinator Doug Magee, Head of School Ned Sherrill and guest Peter Hamilton of The Hamilton Foundation. We are very grateful for our partnership with the Institute!

Driver's Ed at Church Farm School Thanks to a program introduced in 2012 by then-Govenor Corbett and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as well as the fact that one of our new teachers, Mr. Bob Warfel, is a PA-licensed Driver Education Instructor, Church Farm School has begun allowing students to take driver's education during the school year. The PennDOT program, called End of Course Student Testing (EOCST) allows public and private schools in PA to partner with specially-licensed private Driver Education companies to provide classroom theory and behind-the-wheel lessons and even test students and issue licenses (without having to take the traditional PennDOT license test and without having to parallel park). CFS has partnered with the Defensive Driving Academy (DDA) of Broomall, PA), which is the private driving school that Mr. Warfel has worked for in previous summers. DDA will hold Mr. Warfel's instructor license, provide insurance discount certificates upon completion of Mr. Warfel's 30-hour "Rules, Laws and Skills" class and will be available to provide behind-the wheel (BTW) driving lessons and End of Course Student Testing and

licensing to those families who are willing/able to register and pay for them during the summer or school year. Mr. Warfel has designed a 3-step program that will run each year starting in the Spring semester (30-hour classroom course and permit), continue through the summer (practice driving) and conclude in the Fall Semester (professional lessons and licensure). Students who are or will be 16 by May of each year will be eligible to participate. Students/families are able to choose to participate in any or all of the 3 steps. The classroom course ending with a discount insurance certificate are free of charge. Students who are currently enrolled in the program should will be bringing home an Options Letter to their parents or guardians. Any other parents who desire information and/or have questions about the new Driver's Ed program should email Mr. Warfel directly at [email protected].
