In times of economic uncertainty, there’s something to be said for taking stock in the things that bring solace. For many of us, that includes family, friends and our shared passion for the game of golf.
At the RCGA, we look to 2009 with great expectations. Sport Canada has designated us as Canadian golf ’s national sport organization which comes with the privilege and responsibility of growing the game in this country.
In 2008 we launched Vision 2010, our three-year rolling strategic plan for growing the game of golf in Canada. The plan, available online at www.rcga.org, has now morphed into Vision 2011 and will continue to set the present and future direction of our sport and our organization. Also available online is our 2008 RCGA annual review online complete with a detailed financial report for the year.
As Canadian golf ’s governing body, our efforts are focused on five areas – increasing membership value for clubs and golfers; growing the game, specifically by getting more children into the game and improving the caliber of our excellence programs; conducting best in class championships; ensuring long-term financial stability; and creating a more effective organization.
A national in-schools junior golf program set to launch in 2009 will help to expose thousands of young linksters to the game. In addition, our high performance Team Canada program is helping develop the future heroes of Canadian golf. Whether through year-round coaching, exercise physiology or sport science expertise, the RCGA has made a commitment to developing the future stars of our game and our investment in Team Canada is translating into results.
In order to become a more effective organization, we’ve remodeled our governance structure. The RCGA’s former 36-member board of governors has been streamlined to a group of 11 directors – efficient, more responsive, increasingly effective and better capable of leading this fine association.
In 2008, the RCGA operated under a $2.4 million deficit, a reality that has seen a 20% staff reduction at Golfhouse since 2007. Our business model is no longer funded by the fruits of our Open championships and we are exploring additional revenue streams, especially through increased membership.
2009 brings with it a $3 membership dues increase, the first in nearly eight years.
As we look to offset our operational costs, fundraising will become a major focus of the RCGA moving forward.
On the topic of fundraising, we are proud to welcome the inaugural Mike Weir Charity Classic to tournament week of the RBC Canadian Open. This charity fundraiser will feature top stars on the PGA TOUR, as well as numerous music, sport and entertainment celebrities, all in support of The Mike Weir Foundation.
While the economy will continue to weigh heavy on the minds of Canadians, we encourage golfers to invest in their passion for the game. Become a volunteer. Learn more about Canadian golf ’s storied history. Introduce someone new to the game. Support Team Canada and this country’s top athletes.
The economy makes us all evaluate priorities but maybe now is as good a time as any to find comfort in the great game of golf.
As the RCGA gets set to write the next chapter of our long and storied history, we welcome the opportunity to share our story with you.

RBC Canadian Open
Since its inception in 1904, the Canadian Open has played host to the world’s best golfers and produced countless memorable moments. The RBC Canadian Open is the third oldest stop on the PGA TOUR and the third oldest national championship in the world. With its older cousins, the British and U.S. Opens, it constitutes the Triple Crown of national championships. Its rich history gives it a cachet and tradition that makes it much more than a regular golf championship.
