There’s nothing quite like the feeling of walking on stage
and putting everything you’ve got into a performance.
Students at the Colburn School have countless
opportunities to shine on our stages, and those
performances deepen their love and appreciation for
their art. I hope you can join us this month to see what
our students have put together; I know you’ll love it too.

Collaboration Concert Unites Musicians, Singers, and Dancers
The annual Collaboration Concert on February 14 brings
together the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, the Colburn
Youth Orchestra, the Colburn Concert Choir, the Young
Men’s Chorus, and the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute’s
advanced studies students in ballet and modern
dance. The event culminates in a show-stopping group
performance with 130 students on stage together.
“Not many community schools could present a
production like this at the level we’re able to do it,”
said Sara Hiner, assistant dean of the community
school. “It’s thrilling to watch them all work together
and support each other.”
“The energy and relationship created is magical,” said
Tamsin Carlson, interim modern dance chair in the
Trudl Zipper Dance Institute. “Both for the artists on
stage and the audience watching.”

NEA Chairman Jane Chu to Speak at Colburn School
On February 25, the Colburn School is honored to
host Dr. Jane Chu for a special edition of Sidley Austin
Artspeaks, the Colburn School’s lecture and discussion
series hosted by President and CEO Sel Kardan.
Dr. Chu was confirmed as the nation’s top arts official
in June 2014 and has spent the intervening months
visiting various cities, learning how arts and culture
support communities across the United States.
Dr. Chu has already developed a strong philosophy
about arts in America. “The arts are infused in every
aspect of our lives,” Dr. Chu said. “Part of my job is to
help all of us understand that and make us very aware
that the arts are everywhere.”
Artspeaks is generously supported by Sidley Austin LLP.

Colburn In Focus:Conservatory of Music Performance Forums
Conservatory students relish the opportunity to share
their work with an audience at Performance Forum, an
hourlong concert series held on Thursdays.
“If a teacher feels a student is at the best of his best,
he has an opportunity to perform at the forum,” says
violin instructor Robert Lipsett. “Then we all go down
to the rehearsal hall and have lunch together. It’s
extremely bonding.”
The Performance Forum tradition has its roots
in Colburn’s open-school philosophy and our
commitment to creating free opportunities for everyone
to experience the joys of classical music through the
next generation’s top performers. Check our online
calendar for up-to-date information on these events.
