When Deb Butler � rst moved to Oyama nearly 20 years ago there was a movement underway to close down schools in Lake Country due to declining enrolment.

With her children en-tering the school system, Butler got involved with Parent Advisory Coun-cils at di� erent Lake Country schools as well as at the district level and fought, alongside other parents, to keep schools open.

“� e whole time we were � ghting to keep schools open we were saying ‘the kids are com-ing,’” she recalled last week, in an interview with the Lake Country Calendar. “Now they are coming and we have a di� erent problem.”

� e problem now is there are more kids about to enter the school sys-tem than there are spaces available, speci� cally at Davidson Road Elemen-tary.

Butler is still involved in the battle for kids and schools in Lake Coun-try but is now in her � rst term as a School District 23 board member, elect-ed by the public to repre-sent Lake Country at the board of education table.

� e district is pre-

dicting there will be at least 30 more kids regis-tering for Davidson Road Elementary this fall than the school can currently handle.

“We are going to see a big push of elementary kids and we will need to � nd space for them,” said Butler. “We want to work together and hope-fully � nd the best solu-tion that everybody can buy into.”

� e district had � oat-ed the idea of moving Grade 7’s into George Elliot and turning the high school into a Grade 7 to 12 school. � at plan was shelved after a big outcry from par-ent groups. Now the dis-trict has decided to form a focus group to study the situation and come up with the best way to handle it by September of 2014. In the mean-time the 30 extra kids that enter the school system this fall and fall under Davidson Road’s catchment area will be bussed to Peter Greer Elementary.

Parents, teachers, school board members and sta� will enter into discussions to try to � nd the best approach to dealing with an in� ux of kids including moving kids in Grades 6, 7, and 8 into a middle school, re-vising catchment areas or

placing students in port-ables.

“It’s a huge deci-sion for Lake Coun-try,” said Butler. “As a board we support the middle school concept so personally I think if we support that then we need to look to the middle school concept. Any change, even posi-tive change, can fracture a community so it’s im-portant that the com-

munity feels a part of the process and the solution. � is gives us time to de-cide what is the best way to go to deal with these extra kids moving into the school system.”

Registration for the 2013-14 school session opened on Feb. 4 and parents are expected to lineup to make sure their child can go to school at Davidson Road. It’s the � rst time in the history

of elementary schools in Lake Country that was expected to happen. � e district has a set of pri-orities that ranks each school child when it comes to placing them. If two children are ranked in the same category, the deciding factor of who goes where will be who registered � rst.

Butler says it’s a com-plete change from dec-ades ago.

“For all my years of � ghting to keep schools open it’s a positive that we have too many kids but it’s not necessar-ily the best situation for families that want to get into their home school,” she said. “I’m really hopeful next year we can come up with some solu-tions that everybody is happy with.”

Politicians from every level of government were all smiles late Friday in Win� eld, as they an-nounced the � nal instal-ment of $4-million for water treatment infra-structure that will bene� t the entire Central Oka-nagan.

James Baker was joined by federal MP Ron Can-nan and provincial MLA Norm Letnick as well as reps from the Cen-tral Okanagan Region-al District and the Union of B.C. Municipalities, for the announcement of money to upgrade the district’s wastewater treatment plant.

is continuing to climb up the ladder of the hock-ey ranks and is enjoying a pretty good rookie sea-son with the West Ke-

lowna Warriors, his � rst season in the B.C. Hock-ey League.

“He’s been good for us as a � rst year play-er,” said Warriors’ coach/GM Rylan Ferster. “He has a good shot, he plays a give and go game and he goes up and down his wing. He is hard to han-dle down low and was playing really well before he was injured.”

Lashuk su� ered the injury in the Warriors � nal game before the Christmas break and missed 10 games before coming back last week-end against Penticton. Aside from the injury, the former member of the Kelowna Chiefs says his � rst year in junior A has been pretty good.

“� ings are going really well, it’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “We have a great group of guys, one of the best teams I have been on. Everybody gets along and we are all close.”

Lashuk began play-ing organized hockey at the age of � ve in Win-� eld Minor Hockey but thanks to the outdoor rink at his parents place, he had plenty of oppor-tunities to skate over the years. Hockey became like second nature, to the graduate of George El-liot school.

“We were a really big hockey family,” he said. “My Dad played when he was a kid. He loved the game and we al-ways had hockey rinks a our house. Having that available to you it be-comes part of your life and something that real-ly nothing can replace.”

After playing Win-� eld minor until his � rst year of bantam, Lashuk joined the Pursuit of Ex-cellence Hockey Acad-emy for a season before making the Okanagan Rockets major midget team as a 15-year-old. A shoulder injury and sur-gery put Lashuk on the sidelines for his second year of midget before he tried out for and made the Kelowna Chiefs jun-ior B team last season and then the Warriors this year.

“It’s always been a goal of mine to make it to junior hockey and to accomplish that out of Win� eld is pretty good,” he said. “� ere are only a handful of guys to make junior from Win� eld.”

One of those is a for-mer teammate Har-lan Orr, currently play-ing for Salmon Arm in the BCHL and another is Lashuk’s older broth-er Derek Lashuk, a de-fenceman for Beaver Valley in the KIJHL. For Brent Lashuk this sea-son has been about bat-tling through injury and attempting to get estab-lished at a higher level of junior that he played last year.

And he’s handling it well.

“It’s always tough to be a rookie in the league but I’m getting used to it and I’m really enjoy-ing playing at this level,” he said, adding that the Warriors could be a force in the playo� s if every-one gets healthy. “Once

ject —the wastewater treatment plant will be upgraded with energy ef-� cient green technol-ogy and the latest sci-enti� c advancements to increase the plant’s cap-acity—comes from gas taxes. � e federal Gas Tax Fund will contrib-ute $4.1 million while $1.1 million comes from CORD’s annual Gas Tax Fund allocation.

“We go after every grant we can,” said Baker. “I think we have had great collaboration (with the province and feder-al government). If we can share the burden with the rest of Canada and the province it makes it easier on the debt load that we inherited 17

years ago (when Lake Country incorporated).”

� e upgrades at the District of Lake Coun-try’s wastewater treat-ment facility are need-ed with the current plant and disposal system nearing capacity.

� e increased capacity will allow for growth in the district as well as the potential for exist-ing neighbourhoods that have failing septic � elds to receive sanitary sew-er service.

� e design phase for the project has been completed and tenders

will go out this month with construction on the plant expected in the spring. � e project is ex-pected to double the cur-rent plant’s capacity and contribute to the reduc-tion of greenhouse gas emissions.

“� is will have an im-pact on the commun-ity,” said Cannan in sum-ming up his remarks by quoting from the movie Field of Dreams. “If you build it they will come,” he said.

Healthy Warriors hard to beat

During a summer outing with her family, Lake Country student Reanne Pearson heard a story about a young boy who was living in an abusive household.

� e boy’s mother was being abused and the children were forced to live through what Pear-son thought was an un-healthy situation. � e Grade 12 student was deeply a� ected by the story of abuse, so much so that she decided to do something about it.

“We heard this story about a family where the wife was getting abused and it really hit home be-cause I didn’t realize how big of a problem this was in the world,” said Pear-son, 17. “I felt it was im-portant to do something because maybe the kids didn’t know that what was happening in their house was wrong. I think it’s important that the kids know this isn’t right and there is somewhere they can get help.”

So with that in mind, Pearson went to work, contacting the Kelow-

na Women’s Shelter, the Central Okanagan School District and the George Elliot Parent Advisory Council to or-ganize what is now a two-day event that will be held this � ursday and Friday at the school.

During lunch hour she, along with members of the Kelowna Women’s Shelter and the faculty at George Elliot, will be providing fellow students with information on do-mestic abuse and where kids can get information for guidance and coun-selling. Pearson also ap-proached local business-es to secure donations for draw prizes to help gen-erate interest in her event and raise money, with any proceeds going to the women’s shelter.

“It’s important for high school students to know what a healthy re-lationship looks like so if they are being abused or see abuse they realize what the di� erence is be-tween a healthy and abu-sive relationship,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be physical abuse. It can be mental, psychological, sexual. It could be hap-

pening to anybody.” Pearson is hoping

to make this an annual event at the school and provide students with in-formation on abuse on an ongoing basis, rather just a one-o� event. She is expecting to attend UBCO to study psychol-ogy next year but is tak-ing steps to make sure

there are students who will follow in her foot-steps.

“I want to pick out individuals from each grade below me so this can keep occurring,” she said. “I don’t want this to be a one time event, I want this to continue on when I’m not at the high school.”

Pearson is no stran-ger to giving back to the community. In the past she has volunteered at the boys and girls club, has helped organ-ize a ride for the cure for breast cancer as well as working with children with disabilities. She says if one person is touched by this week’s healthy re-

lationship event, it will be a success.

“All I want is for kids to be aware that abuse is occurring,” she said. “� e greater feeling will be knowing I helped some-body and got the aware-ness out in the commun-ity.”

Story of abuse calls teen into action


“If more than 15 per cent of the population disobey a law,” a Quebec policemen once told me, “it’s unenforceable.”

I don’t know where he

got that 15 per cent � g-ure. Perhaps it was an educated guess; perhaps there have been serious studies.

Details aside, though, his point is correct. Once a certain critical mass is achieved, the e� ects be-

come unstoppable.� e term “critical

mass” comes from nucle-ar physics. At the Man-hattan Project, scientists discovered that when a certain mass of � ssion-able material is brought together, a chain reaction starts. Up to that mass, the reaction will � zzle out; beyond it, the reac-tion proceeds explosively.

� e principle is also true socially.

We commonly as-sume that social change requires a majority—50 per cent plus one or more.

But the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia had nowhere near a major-ity of citizens involved. I don’t know what propor-tion of Egyptians rallied in Tahrir Square. I’m sure it wasn’t 50 per cent but it was enough to topple

Lieutenant Govern-or Judith Guichon will inspect the troops and present her inaugural � rone Speech, setting out the B.C. Liberal gov-ernment’s goals for the coming year.

� is ritual will kick o� a legislative session that is expected to run until March 14, where the of-� cial Parliamentary Cal-endar shows a three-week break for Easter. Debate is unlikely to re-sume in April, as the election campaign will be in full roar by then.

� is means there will be a grand total of 19 sitting days to push through a budget and a raft of legislation. Here’s my uno� cial preview.

� e pre-election budget will be presented Feb. 19 by Finance Min-ister Michael de Jong. Premier Christy Clark has decreed that it must

be balanced, and the government has made extra e� orts to armour itself against what will likely be the loudest de-bate ahead.

First, de Jong held a pre-budget meeting of the government’s blue-chip forecast council in public. � is provid-ed a visual record of what happens every year, when the � nance ministry so-licits the same sort of in-dependent advice as most competent democ-racies, and bases its num-bers on that.

� en the � nance min-istry hired former Bank of Montreal chief econo-

mist Tim O’Neill, who will act as an uno� -cial version of the parlia-mentary budget o� cer in Ottawa. Now that we have simultaneous over-sight of child welfare and the police, the next step is to extend it to � nance bureaucrats.

Regardless of party, the government has to produce a three-year set of forecasts to replace the current one. A lot of election energy will go into competing claims about who is better at predicting the future.

Another new law to be given high prior-ity is one setting up sen-ate elections, to be run in connection with the May 14 provincial vote. Al-berta pioneered this, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recent round of senate appointments in-cluded Calgary lawyer Doug Black, who won an Alberta senate elec-tion held last year.

� ere was no one ap-pointed to replace Gerry St. Germain, who bid an emotional adieu as a

Conservative senator for B.C. last year. St. Ger-main was instrumental in uniting the splintered federal Conservatives, but he reached the man-datory retirement age of 75, having been appoint-ed by Brian Mulroney in 1993 after losing his seat as an MP.

Why would this sen-ate reform be so urgent for the B.C. Liberals now? Well, turnout for the 2009 election fell to around 50 per cent, a re-cord low for a provincial vote. If that downward trend is reversed this year, it will be in large part be-cause people are still mad enough about the har-monized sales tax and a range of other issues

to get o� the couch and kick some B.C. Liber-al butt.

Electing senators re-mains a popular notion, especially with older, conservative-minded voters in B.C. who iden-ti� ed with the Reform Party. � e � rst-ever sen-ate election looks like the best available shot at boosting turnout among people who are not like-ly to vote NDP, and who may also be disengaged from provincial politics.

And then there is the provincial sales tax bill. Another kick in the slats for the movie business, for one, and don’t hold your breath for NDP leader Adrian Dix to produce a solution in the wake of his recent trip to Tinsel Town.

� e performance of the governing party and the opposition will be scrutinized as never be-fore.

mass” comes from nucle-ar physics. At the Man-hattan Project, scientists discovered that when a certain mass of � ssion-able material is brought together, a chain reaction starts. Up to that mass, the reaction will � zzle out; beyond it, the reac-tion proceeds explosively.

� e principle is also true socially.

We commonly as-sume that social change requires a majority—50 per cent plus one or more.

But the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia had nowhere near a major-ity of citizens involved. I don’t know what propor-tion of Egyptians rallied in Tahrir Square. I’m sure it wasn’t 50 per cent but it was enough to topple

Hosni Mubarak. It may be enough to force cur-rent president Mohamed Morsi to bend.

When I look at his-tory, I see even smaller factions having huge ef-fects.

� e biggest upheav-al in history started with one radical from Gali-lee. Who gathered 12 men, and an unknown number of women, who told a few others. � ey formed a tiny fragment of the Jewish popula-tion, an even smaller pro-portion of the almighty Roman empire. But they generated enough critical mass to become the em-pire’s o� cial religion 300 years later.

Has the Idle No More movement in Canada, the Occupy movement in the U.S., achieved critical mass yet? I doubt it. But who knows?

One thing is clear—a critical mass always fa-vours some new develop-ment. It never goes into reverse.

� e heel-dragging

majority may crush a radical movement be-fore it achieves a critical mass, just as nuclear en-gineers can isolate blobs of enriched uranium to prevent a chain reaction from starting. But once the reaction starts, noth-ing can stu� the genie back into the bottle.

Bruce Sanguin, in his book Darwin, Divin-ity, and the Dance of the Cosmos, uses the example of femin-ism. Feminism has al-ways been around. It existed in ancient cul-tures. It threads through the Bible. But feminism achieved critical mass in the 1970s.

Now, says Sanguin, “the feminist revolution

has meant that the treat-ment of women in all cultures will inevitably be measured against the (new) standard of equal-ity. � ere is no going back. Patriarchal regimes and institutions may re-sist feminism, but now that it has emerged into human consciousness, it can never be ‘undone’.”

He could equally well have used slavery as an example. Or literacy. Or mobile computing de-vices—which now out-number the world’s hu-man population. Or nu-clear technology, for that matter.

No one can predict exactly when a nascent movement becomes a critical mass. It may re-quire as little as one more participant.

Confronted by a new movement, it seems to me, we can try to ignore it. We can resist it. Or we can join it—and perhaps add the in� nitesimal ex-tra that turns mere po-tential into critical mass.

I don’t know about you, but as a stu-dent growing up in

Edmonton looking for a summer job, I would head over to the Sum-mer Hire-A-Student of-� ce.

I was very grateful for the employers that hired students like me because it helped us raise money to pay for our post-sec-ondary studies.

It’s di� cult to think about summer jobs for students while we are in the dead of winter, but now is the time for Ke-lowna and Lake Coun-try employers to consider hiring a student with the help of the federal gov-ernment’s Canada Sum-mer Jobs program.

Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative that helps employers create sum-mer job opportunities for students 15 to 30 years of age who are full-time

students intending to re-turn to their studies in the next school year..

Designed to focus on local priorities, the in-itiative provides funding to not-for-pro� t, pub-lic-sector and small pri-vate-sector employ-ers with 50 or fewer em-ployees.

� is year, the applica-tion process for employ-ees will be held from Feb. 1 to 28.

Assessment of appli-

cations will take place in March and employers will be contacted in May so that students can be hired beginning in May 2013.

Canada Summer Job proposals will be as-sessed using the follow-ing guidelines:

• service to local com-munities

• jobs that support lo-cal priorities

• jobs that provide ca-reer-related experience or early work experience

• jobs with a salary that contributes to the student’s income

• employers who pro-vide supervision and mentoring

• project activities that are directed toward members of, and support the vitality of, an o� cial language minority com-munity and

• employers who in-tend to hire priority stu-

dents (students with dis-abilities, aboriginal stu-dents and students who are members of visible minority groups).

In 2011, Ottawa in-creased the budget for Canada Summer Jobs by $10 million, bringing the total program budget to $107.5 million.

� e increased fund-ing will help more stu-dents gain the skills and experience they need to be successful, now and in the future, while at the same time earning money for the upcoming school year.

Lately I’ve seen two very signi� cant issues facing Can-

adian aboriginals in the media.

� e � rst is the Idle No More movement which is pressing the feder-al government to make some decisions and move forward on a number of issues such as the en-vironment. � e main issues seem to stem from Bill C-38 which re-de� nes how we protect our environment and gives the government more power over re-source development.

� e other is Bill C-45 which takes into account our waterways includ-ing the Fisheries Act and once again gives the gov-ernment more power to implement change.

Running parallel to this movement is such economic activity as mining exploration, fu-ture mines, and oth-er resource sensitive is-sues such as Enbridge.

A good example of this kind of economic activity is an area which is about 500 kilometres northeast of � under Bay, Ont., just below James Bay called the Ring of Fire.

� is area is rich in chromium and nick-el. Chromium is used to make stainless steel which is in high demand in growth sector econo-mies such as China and India.

What’s happening in these First Nation com-munities is a desire by many to work for the

mines, but they lack the education and skills to qualify for these jobs.

� is is what happened in Attawapiskat and the De Beers diamond mine. Support to the First Na-tions community for ed-ucation and training to meet the needs of the di-amond mining econ-omy just didn’t hap-pen as quickly as it could have. � e aboriginal la-bour pool couldn’t meet the needs of the employ-er thereby not providing the Attawapiskat com-munity with greater eco-nomic returns.

Now Noront, a min-ing company out of To-ronto, is keen in ensuring its mining operations can employ as many local ab-original workers as pos-sible. � ey are aiming for a 25 per cent aboriginal workforce.

� e company is look-ing at training options instead of asking work-ers to have the required Grade 12 graduation.

� e company would take into account previ-ous work experience and have workers complete local training programs.

Other initiatives in-clude summer camps that were held last year. Aboriginal youth age eight to 19 spent time learning such things as prospecting, claim stak-ing, mapping, GPS tech-nology and the applica-tion of environmental geochemistry.

Mining and other re-source-based economies have the opportunity to bring employment into the hinterland of Cana-da and at the same time provide Aboriginal com-munities with jobs.

How the Idle No More movement will reconcile this with its en-vironmental concerns and Bill C-38 and Bill C-45 will be interesting.

Clash of aboriginal resource jobs vs. environmental impact

� e Lake Country Senior’s Activity Cen-tre is a non-pro� t society with the mandate to pro-vide and enrich the qual-ity of life for seniors in the community.

No one wants to be considered old. Much of the physical decline is caused by inactivity and subsequent boredom to which the elderly have traditionally been con-signed.

Remaining ac-tive rather than slow-ing down and taking it easy could prolong men-

tal and physical health. If you are having a di� -cult time with situations in your life, please feel free to contact us at the society and we will try to help where we can.

At this particular time we have several activities being held at the cen-tre and there is probably something for every-body. Some of the groups are sewing, crib, bridge, painting, tai-chi, wood shop, bus society, hospi-tal auxiliary and Tuesday lunch.

� e centre started in

1979 and since that time there have been many go through the doors, some using the centre for meetings, activities, me-morial teas, weddings or just about anything you can think of.

We have just lowered our user age to 50. We are in desperate need of some younger members to assist those who are getting older.

Considering the fact that we are a non-prof-it organization we are self-su� cient and are re-sponsible for the run-

ning of the building. � e money we collect goes towards basic upkeep of equipment and kitchen requirements, audio sys-tem, tables and chairs.

Each group collects a small user fee which provides them with the funds to run their activ-ity and pay the centre 50 cents per person per visit.

Our membership fee is $5.50 per person per year January to Decem-ber. � e $5.50 is paid

to the District of Lake Country for mainten-ance on the building so, as you can see, not much comes to the society. At present there are ap-proximately 325 mem-bers and room for many more.

Think back on the New Years’ reso-lutions you’ve set

for yourself. How many have you been able to keep?

When it comes to resolutions, most of us tend to have the mind-set of a Texan: Go big or go home.

We reach for the stars and set goals like run-ning the Boston Mara-thon or looking like Ar-nold Schwarzenegger when our sneakers ha-ven’t seen the light of day since � anksgiving.

We all want to be a better “me” in this New Year, but if we set the bar too high are we bound to fail?

And if we fail will we resort back to our old ways and habits without giving it a second try?

As a physiotherapist I commonly hear about people wanting to in-crease their physical ac-tivity, lose weight and

build muscle mass. Un-fortunately the extreme resolutions are more like-ly to be abandoned and result in physical injury.

Don’t get me wrong, they are important goals and may be achievable if given enough time. However, making small-er, intermediate reso-lutions may be a better way to get you where you want to go.

Whether you’ve al-ready registered for a race or just want to get your heart pumping, starting at the beginning is al-ways a good idea.

According to the American Col-lege of Sports Medi-cine (ASCM) exer-

cise and physical activ-ity can reduce your risk of coronary heart dis-ease, stroke, type 2 dia-betes, and some forms of cancer (Garber et al. 2011). It can also lower your blood pressure, help

with weight manage-ment, prevent and im-prove mild to moderate depressive disorders and anxiety and improve your overall quality of life.

With this many bene-� ts, how could you not want to add exercise to your daily life in 2013?

� e ASCM rec-ommends that healthy adults should exercise at a moderate intensity

for at least 150 minutes per week (Garber et al. 2011). � is works out to be 30 minutes of exercise � ve days a week.

And, as long as each exercise interval is at least 10 minutes in length, you can combine inter-vals to reach the full 30 minutes. It may not be the 26 miles of a mara-thon but it will start to train your muscles, heart and lungs to handle the new demand.

Over time your body will adapt to these chan-ges and you will be able to walk or run faster and further than you could before.

Once you’ve reached this intermediate resolu-tion, you may start train-ing for those longer runs with more intense train-ing schedules. � ere are many training plans out there for you to fol-low, just remember to set small goals and give yourself time in order to build the endurance you will need for race day.

If you were previous-

ly inactive and 150 min-utes of exercise is your end goal, start small. Less than 20 minutes of ex-ercise per day can still provide you with many

health bene� ts (Garber et al. 2011).

Try taking a 10 minute walk on your lunch break, park at the far end of the parking lot or climb those stairs to your o� ce instead of taking the elevator. Any amount of physical ac-

tivity is bene� cial, but like vacation time, more is better (Garber et al. 2011).

Challenge yourself each week by increasing the briskness, duration and/or frequency of your exercise and you’ll be on a healthy path to reach-ing your New Year’s resolution and those 150 minutes.

If you have a known heart disease or chron-ic condition consult with your physician before be-ginning an exercise pro-gram.

A child’s birth is a time often � lled with great antic-

ipation, excitement and joy as a family welcomes the new little person and is � lled with hope about all the possibility inher-ent in a new life.

Unfortunately, for some mothers this joy-ful experience can turn into a nightmare when they sink into depres-sion, anxiety or even psy-chosis.

By now, most peo-ple are aware of the exis-tence of postpartum de-pression—a condition that can a� ect up to 15 per cent of new mothers. But sadly there are still many who don’t want to talk about it open-ly. Societal expectations surrounding mother-hood often place unspo-ken pressure on women to bury negative feelings and many don’t seek help even when they need it.

January is postpartum depression awareness month and I thought a � tting time to revisit this important topic.

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times when wom-en are most vulnera-ble to develop or relapse into mental illness. Ex-treme changes in hor-mone levels can a� ect brain chemistry as well as most other body sys-tems and often trigger symptoms of depression or anxiety.

Of course the tremen-dous life change, dis-rupted sleep and stress of becoming a parent can also increase susceptibil-ity to a mood disorder.

As a result of all of these factors, most wom-en experience mild

mood symptoms after giving birth. � ese can include sadness, weepi-ness, lack of concentra-tion and moodiness. � is is not considered a dis-order though because symptoms are mild and subside in a few days.

For those who devel-op full blown postpar-tum depression, symp-toms can be much more severe and require treat-ment with either thera-py, medication or a com-bination.

Depression can come on gradually and may begin at any time during pregnancy, immediate-ly following delivery or within the � rst year of motherhood.

Risk factors include previous postpartum de-pression, personal or family history of depres-sion or other mental ill-ness, a di� cult pregnan-cy, high levels of stress, depression or anxiety during pregnancy, mood changes while taking birth control or fertility medication or social iso-lation.

Screening question-naires and doctor inter-views during pregnan-cy can help to identify those at risk and ensure support systems are in place before a crisis de-velops.

It is important to note that postpartum depres-sion is an illness. It is not a product of a weak character or the fault of the mother. Counseling, medication and social support are all import-ant factors in treating this condition and with help, depressed mothers recover well and can ex-pect a happy, normal life.

Most important, if you or someone you love is experiencing postpar-tum depression or anx-iety, seek help. Not only will support and treat-ment help the a� ect-ed mother, but it can also help to keep chil-dren safe and happy. Un-treated, maternal depres-sion can have a profound negative e� ect on fami-ly relationships and the healthy development of children. Help is avail-able.

Depression can set in after child birth

UBC researcher San-joy Ghosh wants to bet-ter understand how diet can cause chronic cardio-vascular complications for people trying to control diabetes and obesity.

Ghosh, assistant pro-fessor of biology with the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences at UBC’s Okanagan cam-pus, is investigating the role Omega-6 polyunsat-urated fatty acids (PUFA) play in the development of heart disease in people with diabetes and obesity.

Omega-6 PUFA in-cludes vegetable oil, cano-la oil, corn oil, sun� ow-er oil and sa� ower oil, all commonly used in food products in Canada, and a major staple of the North American diet.

Omega-6 is generally thought to be a “healthy” fat, but Ghosh notes that his own research, as well as other recent studies, suggests too much Ome-ga-6 could cause in� am-mation and damage the heart muscle.

Fifty years ago, be-fore Omega-6 was wide-ly promoted as a health bene� t, the ratio of Ome-ga-6 to Omega-3 PUFA found in the human diet

was close to a one-to-one ratio, says Ghosh.

“Nowadays, the ra-tio is closer to 20:1,” he says of the bandwagon ef-fect with North Amer-icans consuming more vegetable oils and less and less � sh.

As a result, people have turned to � sh oil pills containing Omega 3 PUFA to help ‘match’ their intake of Omega 6.

“� e breakthrough we saw in our lab was the in-� ammation caused by the Omega 6 fatty acids gets worse with the addition of Omega 3,” says Ghosh.

To better under-stand the potential con-sequences of such � sh oil supplements in the North American context, Ghosh and his research team, which includes re-search colleague Dean-na Gibson, assistant pro-fessor of biology, fed mice a corn oil-based diet (rich in Omega-6 PUFA). � is simulated the typical North American diet to evaluate metabolic stress, gastrointestinal health and heart function.

A few years ago, � e TFSA was introduced. While many folks are using this option each year, there are still ques-tions about what it is, and how it could form the start, or a part of your investment mix. What-ever you’re saving for, a tax-free savings account is a great option.

Here are the basics you need to know:

• What is a tax-free savings account (TFSA)?

A TFSA is a regis-tered savings account that allows you to earn investment income tax-free. Contributions are not deductible for tax purposes and with-drawals of contributions and earnings are not tax-able.

• What options do I have?

� e tax-free savings account provides you with plenty of options—like a high interest Tax Free Savings Account, a redeemable term deposit and a non-redeemable term deposit. Talk with your � nancial advisor to � nd out the best option for you.

• Who can open a TFSA?Any individual (other than a trust) who is resi-dent in Canada, is 18 or older and has a social in-surance number can es-tablish a TFSA at a cred-it union or other � nan-cial institution eligible to issue RSPs.

• How much can I contribute to the TFSA each year?

You are allowed to contribute $5,500 each year. If you don’t contrib-ute $5,500 in a year, the unused amount is added to the next year’s contri-

bution room (e.g. if you only contribute $2,500, the next year your con-tribution limit will be $8,500).

• How long can I carry forward unused contribution room?

� ere is no limit on the number of years un-used contribution room can be carried forward.

• What happens if I contribute more than my contribution room?

Excess contributions are subject to tax of one per cent per month for each month the excess remains in the plan.

• Are there any re-strictions on with-drawals?

No, you can withdraw any amount in the ac-count for any reason.

• Do contributions and withdrawals a� ect my taxes?

TFSA contributions are not deductible in de-

termining income for tax purposes, and amounts earned in or withdrawn from TFSAs are not in-cluded in determining income for tax purposes.

• Can I use my TFSA assets as security for a loan?

Yes, you can use the TFSA assets as security for a loan.

• How do I know what my TFSA contri-bution room is for the year?

� e Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will de-termine your TFSA con-tribution room each year you � le an income tax re-turn.

• Where can I get more information?

Tax Free Savings Account basics

Many people become victims of identity theft every year. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reports that more than 17,000 people lost $13 million due to this type of crime in 2011 alone. It is impossible to prevent identity theft completely, but we can reduce the risks.

Swindlers use the telephone, e-mail, fax, and even the regular mail to achieve their goals. Be on your guard any time you are asked for

personal information, such as your name, birthdate, address, social insurance number, credit card number, or any other private information. Be cautious, ask questions, and do some research before divulging anything, especially if you didn’t initiate the contact.

Your personal identification number (PIN) should never be divulged for any reason. Think about changing the PIN for your credit

or debit card on a regular basis. Above all, don’t use your date of birth for your PIN.

And all documents containing personal or financial information, such as bills and bank and credit card statements, should be thoroughly shredded before they are put in the garbage or recycling.

Social networks are particularly attractive to swindlers. Your new “friends” may not be as they appear.

The fewer details you give about your private life, the better. Never give your telephone number or address through a social network.

If you have to give personal information on the Internet, such as for the purchase of something, ensure that the site is secure. Verify that the “https://” is still present in the URL and look for the padlock icons that promise a secure Internet transaction.

Protect yourself from identity theft

The average woman has a career and is financially independent. She keeps informed of her personal financial situation and knows how to take charge if things begin to slip out of control.

Most women do their own planning and don’t hesitate to explore new ways to make investments, such as online investing.

However, women’s financial goals often differ to those of men. Generally speaking, their risk tolerance is lower. That is partly because of scarcity: a woman’s

average salary is still only equivalent to about 80 percent of a man’s average salary.

Coupled with maternity leave and the need to miss more work days because of family responsibilities,

they accumulate fewer savings than men during their active working lives.

In fact, because of absences from the workforce, women accumulate 10 years less salary than men.

They also tend to live longer than men, which increases their need for retirement savings.

And emergency funds are particularly important for women who may have need of extra reserves when required to be absent from the workplace.

All this means that women, in general, tend to be more careful with the resources that they have.

It also means that it is in the best interest of women to plan their retirements earlier and more carefully than men do.

Keeping a journal is also a great way to practi ce writi ng and literacy skills. Even if it’s not a daily occurrence, sitti ng down in the evening to write about the events of the day or week can get kids thinking and practi cing their handwriti ng.

winter is go in the sauna. Five people can � t in the sauna. It is steamy in-side and makes me sweaty. � e sauna is made of wood. It makes me feel good. When I’m done in the sauna I jump in the snow!

ON MOST FRIDAYS at the end of the month, we celebrate “Spirit Day.” Student Council leaders choose a theme for a dress-up day that will be fun for everyone.

� e children have participated in and enjoyed an ‘80s day, twins day, and the theme pictured is “Wear Your Favourite Colour Day.”

� e girls’ basketball team (OTS Warriors) gathered before a home game against Davidson Road that took place on January 31st. Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams play six games against other local elementary schools before all of the schools end the season with a game day afternoon at GESS! An impromptu cheering section came out to support the girls.

� e Lake Country Art Gallery is prepar-ing for its annual Mem-ber’s Show which starts Feb. 13.

Every year the gal-lery opens the doors of its gallery space to its members as a way to fur-ther support, engage and celebrate their art-istic achievements. � e gallery currently has a membership of about 150 individuals whose membership contribu-tions help support gallery programming includ-ing the annual member’s show.

“We are really bless-ed by the strength of the support of our mem-bers and volunteers”, said gallery manager Petrina McNeill. “It’s really quite incredible that we have so many talented artists among our membership. Last year we had over 175 entries to the mem-bers show and the gal-lery is only able to ac-commodate about 50 or so pieces.”

“Our members and volunteers give so much to the gallery. I am con-

stantly amazed at all the endeavours our mem-bers are up to in and out of their studios”, said gal-lery curator Katie Bren-nan, “� at they still have time to support the gal-lery the way they do is outstanding.”

� ere is still time for artists to take advan-tage of this great exhib-ition opportunity. Each artist is invited to submit a work of art (made in 2011, 2012 or 2013), that is no wider than 36 inch-es to the Lake Coun-try Art Gallery no later than 4 p.m. on � ursday Feb. 7.

If artists are not yet members of the gal-lery, they can purchase a

membership at the time of drop-o� as only mem-bers can show in this ex-hibition.

Besides an opportun-ity to show their work at a public art gallery, art-ists’ work will also re-ceive feedback from the member’s show jury. � is year artists Karla Grif-� n and Angelika Jae-ger will serve on the jury, along with LCAG cur-ator Katie Brennan.

Gri� n is a Saska-toon-based artist who recently moved to Ke-lowna to teach as a Ses-sional lecturer in stu-dio at UBC Okanagan. She has exhibited across Canada and within the United States, and she

In 2005 Aj began her for-mal schooling in � ne arts at the University of Brit-ish Columbia Okanagan, where she is currently in the process of � nish-ing her Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Aj’s work can be found in private collec-tions in both Europe and Canada and in regular exhibits in a number of local galleries.

Can I use human pain medications to treat my pets?

Just like us, our pets will often experience aches and pains as a result of aging or injuries. It is nice to be able to offer pain relief but we have to be very careful about

which products we use and how much we give. In general, before giving your pet any medication, it is strongly recommended you consult with your veterinarian. Although some human medications can be safely given to pets, some are very toxic and others come in tablet sizes that cannot be dosed appropriately. Whenever possible, it is preferred to use products speci� cally formulated for animals. Regardless, it is very important that your animal is examined and weighed so that a correct dose and frequency of administration can be determined. It is also recommended that screening bloodwork is done to determine if your pet can safely metabolize medications. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is very dangerous to dogs and cats and should never be used. Relatively small doses (a single pill or even a small piece of a pill) can be toxic or deadly to any small animal species. If you suspect your animal may have ingested this product, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Upon the break-up of a marriage or long-term re-

lationship, you need to have open communica-tion with each other to resolve issues.

If you need an impar-tial third party, then a mediator or lawyer will provide independent legal advice.

� e laws relating to relationship break-down can be complex. � e courts are con-cerned with children as one of the � rst and fore-most important issues to deal with. � e division of family assets need to be divided equally.

Family assets include the family home and are subject to division re-gardless of when the home was purchased or who purchased it.

Other family assets include vehicles, furni-ture, second homes, bank accounts, RRSP and other assets used by the

family.To � nd out how much

you own and how much you owe, begin by listing your accumulated assets minus the liabilities. � e family � nancial obliga-tions need to be organ-ized with the net amount being divided fairly be-tween the couple.

� ere are many life changes that occur dur-ing marriage and after a marriage ends.

Couples usually make each other the bene� ci-ary of their wills. Upon

divorce, review your will as any provisions in the will may no longer be valid. When drafting a new will after a marriage breakdown, ensure any dependent children are properly provided for in your will.

With registered assets with named bene� ci-aries, you will need to re-view your bene� ciary designations to deter-mine if they are still ap-propriate during and af-ter your separation / di-vorce.

In the case or regis-tered assets such as RR-SPs that are transferred subject to a legal agree-ment on relationship breakdown, the tax form T2220 is completed and the assets are transferred within the tax shelter to avoid immediate taxa-tion.

If you or your spouse are members of a Regis-tered Pension Plan, a division of these assets

will also be a factor in the division of assets.

Canada Pension Plan recognizes that in a legal marriage or com-mon-law relationship, both spouses or com-mon-law partners share in the building of their assets and entitlements. Among these are Can-ada Pension Plan pen-sion credits.

When a relationship ends, the Canada Pen-sion Plan pension credits the couple built up dur-ing the time they lived together can be divid-ed equally between them. � is division is called credit splitting.

Credits can be split even if one spouse or common-law partner did not pay into the Can-ada Pension Plan. With life insurance, married couples name each other as bene� ciaries of each other’s life insurance.

before retiring in Lake Country. Remembered and loved by his Sister Carole Kemp and her children and

grandchildren, his mother Violet Kirkman, his dear friends and his little dog, Sami.

Okanagan Centre Rd. W & Pixton Rd. Greenspace Cleanup

In order to make public and foreshore greenspace safe, tidy and available to all residents and visitors, Council passed a motion on September 4, 2012 that requires all private structures, except for operational pump houses, to be removed from the Okanagan Greenspace by February 28, 2013. Owners of private structures, boats and furniture are asked to remove these items from the public greenspace by the February 28, 2013 deadline. Following this deadline, a community clean up event will be organized and any private property and structures left on the greenspace will be removed. Dog licence renewals are due February 28, 2013. The tag for a dog that has been spayed or neutered costs $20 while a dog licence for those that have not costs $60. Starting March 1st a $20 dollar late fee is applied to renewals.

Business licence renewal payments WERE due January 31, 2013. The due date for business licence renewal was January 31, 2013. Businesses operating without a valid business license after that may be subject to a ticket (MTI) and fine. Partners in Parks Program The District of Lake Country’s Partners in Parks Program provides an opportunity for individuals to remember or honour loved ones through a commemorative bench, picnic table or other amenity. The District works with interested donors to establish the best piece of furniture or item to be purchased and location. All purchasing and installation is done by the District after the cash donation has been made, and an official tax receipt is then issued to the donor.
