Bitcoin. Virtual currency. Disruptive innovations. Big banks. Consumer and government debt. In a-tion.

As citizens and governments around the world continue to go further into debt, questions arise about whether there is an alternative to the current banking system we have lived with all our lives.

Proponents of a virtual currency called Bitcoin say

it has the power to change the banking system as we know it, cutting out the middle-man and allowing in-dividuals and businesses to be their own bank, elimin-ating fees and limiting traditional debt.

Could Bitcoin—or any other virtual currency—gather enough momentum to disrupt the banking system in the same way other technological develop-ments have changed other industries? Or will the big

banks win the race to evolve and innovate?Lake Country Calendar reporter Kevin Parnell

found there are a lot of questions but few answers. One thing is for sure, the race is on to give people more choice. Some observers say it’s only a matter of time before the nancial system, as we know it, comes to a crashing end.

Families in Lake Country have a brand new fun event to take part in, coming up at the end of this month.

e inaugural Lake Country Indoor Chil-dren’s Festival, presented by TD Bank, will be at the Lake Country Com-munity Complex on Sat-urday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with more activities at Creekside eatre.

 e event was or-

ganized by Lake Coun-try’s new cultural de-velopment coordinator Ryan Donn, who said he wanted to focus on fam-ilies for a new event in the district.

“ ere are so many families in Lake Coun-try and neighbouring Kelowna and Vernon, that organizing a chil-dren’s festival at our ter-ri c community com-plex was at the top of my list of priority activ-

ities to make happen in 2016,” said Donn. “As a parent myself, I’m al-ways attentive to events for families that o er interactive fun and learn-ing experiences for a var-iety of ages. Having TD Bank as the title spon-sor is a really good t be-cause they have a very community-minded ap-proach to business and a local presence on Lake Country’s Main Street.”

e event will feature face painting, a bouncy castle, caricatures by Marzio, a talent compe-tition, Trixie the Clown, and entertainer Leif David in the Creekside

 eatre. e festival will also

feature artisan booths, craft tables and a pop-up clothing store courtesy of Mamas for Mamas.

Multi-cultural activ-ities like dancing, ori-gami and henna will be on display.

Donn said it’s a true community e ort as the Lake Country re ght-ers will provide a com-bat challenge, the Lake Country Museum is hosting an historic-al photo booth and the Lake Country Art Gal-lery will have various art activities for kids to par-ticipate in.

Lake Country Health Planning Society will have a building blocks area and Wentworth Music is hosting a drum booth for young musi-

cians.  Admission to the

Children’s Festival is by donation, with suggested donations of $2 child, $5 adult and $10 family.

KEVIN PARNELL

For the past 20 years, Derrick Nicholson has been working in curren-cy markets, as a strategist and a trader.

He works with com-panies to purchase prod-ucts around the world.

He moves money and he hedges, making in-vestments as a way of in-suring against future losses.

But the Kelowna man says the future of cur-rency as we know it is changing, and everyday people stand to su er the most.

“I think we’re head-ing for a currency crisis,” Nicholson said this week. “Change is coming and I’ve looked at this for years. It’s not pretty but life is about change and hopefully some good comes of it.

“I think there is a massive transfer of wealth coming. I look at the markets today and there is so much volatil-ity. I’ve been a trader for 20 years and I’ve never seen markets like this. It isn’t normal and the vola-tility is increasing.”

According to Nichol-son, many of the prob-lems he sees coming are directly related to the way governments around the world are in control of currency.

Historically, most cur-rencies were based on physical commodities such as gold or silver.

However, those days are gone, replaced with what’s now called at money, currency that a government has declared to be legal tender but is not backed by a physical commodity.

“All currencies to-day are managed by gov-ernments and the move-ments that are made are

not always in the best economic interests,” said Nicholson.

“Currencies are con-stantly devalued by gov-ernments and central banks and what that means is in ation.

“As human beings, we think in ation is the nat-ural order of things but it’s not. It’s a tax by gov-ernment because the purchasing power of cur-rencies is constantly de-valued.

“You can buy less to-day with your currency than you could 10 years ago and that’s because governments are (creat-ing) money out of thin air.”

But as governments around the world try to deal with economies that appear to be failing, there is a counter-movement underway that is provid-ing an alternative cur-rency.

In 2008, an invention known as Bitcoin rst came to light. In 2009, it was released as an open-source, peer-to-peer computer software.

One of many di erent virtual currencies avail-able today, Bitcoin has the largest market share and uses a technology called blockchain.

e blockchain is a public ledger that records Bitcoin transactions.

ousands of com-puters work together to record every transaction using a mathematical al-gorithm, recalculating as many as 200,000 times in a single day.

Users are able to make transactions without the use of an intermediary or a banking system, and in a way, become a bank-ing system without the banks.

One Bitcoin is cur-rently valued at over $380 US and there are

more and more compan-ies accepting Bitcoin for services every day.

In Kelowna, busi-nesses such as Roll-ingdale Winery, Duke and Duchess Clothing, Pawsitive Veterinarian Care, Hemp City and Kelowna Instaprint all accept Bitcoin.

“ e positives I see with Bitcoin is it’s not controlled or owned by any government there-fore it can’t be manipu-lated,” said Nicholson.

“It’s a step in the right direction. It’s prob-ably not the nal prod-

uct but it’s a move away from government manu-factured currencies to a more free market way of trading which is how commerce should take place.”

•••Bitcoin as a virtu-

al currency has had wild swings since it was rst made available for public use. It has traded all over the map, from $11 US to its current status above $380 US for one Bitcoin.

If you want to buy or use Bitcoin in Kelow-na it’s easy. On the cor-ner of Bernard and Gor-

don, Steve Merrill sits in his o ce at Sover-eign Silver & Gold Ex-change and will convert Canadian money into Bitcoin using what looks like a traditional debit machine.

Lots of companies are in the Bitcoin business, with names like Coinkite and Coinbase. More are o ering debit cards that use Bitcoin, with names like Xapo and e-Coin.

Kelowna was actual-ly home to one of the rst Bitcoin ATMs back in 2013 and there are re-portedly now more than

500 ATMs worldwide. at rst ATM is

gone from Kelowna, but Merrill has partnered with a Vancouver com-pany called Netcoin—two brothers who have created a virtual ATM using a smartphone app.

“A customer can walk in and buy 100 dollars worth of Bitcoin,” said Netcoin founder and CEO Michael Vogel. “We facilitate the heavy lifting to get that Bitcoin from us to the custom-er’s digital wallet where Bitcoins are stored. You can then open up your Bitcoin wallet on your phone.”

Despite the increase in businesses using Bitcoin, walk down the street and ask people if they know about Bitcoin and the re-sponses will range from zero knowledge or others who have heard about it, to those who thought it was a passing fad that went away.

“It’s a common reac-tion we get from a lot of people we talk to: ‘I thought Bitcoin died,’” said Vogel. “But the real-ity is Bitcoin’s adoption rate is about six times faster than the early days of the Internet.

“We’re not that far re-moved from when the Internet was coming of age. Bitcoin is at the same kind of point in its lifecycle.

“It’s mostly early adopters and tech-savvy people who are interest-ed in it today.”

Vogel said the tech-nology is ramping up and becoming more in the mainstream, as evi-denced by the invest-ment now being made in blockchain technology by major nancial insti-tutions.

“ e funny thing is, a year ago all the Amer-

ican banks didn’t want anything to do with Bitcoin, they thought it was ridiculous,” said Vogel.

“But since August every major American bank and about 30 ma-jor nancial institutions have invested in or start-ed their own blockchain. Visa has started a pilot project in Europe to use an internal mechanism to move money around. Microsoft, Dell, Expedia are now all actively ac-cepting Bitcoin.”

At Sovereign Sil-ver & Gold, Merrill says Bitcoin is a move away from the way things are done today as people heavily nance purchases using credit cards, lines of credit and mortgages, increasing debt and pay-ing interest on their pur-chases.

At the same time, countries like Can-ada continue to go fur-ther into debt, borrowing money from the inter-national banking system, creating money from bonds and continuing a cycle of debt that he said is out of control.

“All money today is debt,” he said. “If the money is always char-ging you rent to the point where the rent—the interest—exceeds the money supply, the system fails. Talk to the people in Greece or in Vene-zuela where their curren-cy has collapsed.

“In the 1970s, the fed-eral government had al-most no debt. Now the interest on Canada’s debt is $50 billion annually.

“Historically this kind of nancing and borrow-ing has never worked.”

My telephone was the victim of a

hit-and-run accident about a week ago.

A pair of moving trucks came down the lane that runs beside our house. I happened to be looking out the window, just in time to see an up-per corner of the leading truck hook the lines that run between a pole and our house.

e lines snapped. e driver knew it had

happened. He got out of his cab, came back, and

held the dangling lines aside so the second truck could get through. en he climbed back into his cab.

By that time I was out on our front step, yelling at him.

“Call the phone com-pany,” he yelled back. And drove o .

Call the phone com-pany? When you’ve just ripped out my phone line?

I was still livid, half an hour later, when I went to my week-ly recorder class. And I found I could not play the recorder. My e orts sounded like a piglet with intestinal cramps.

e woodwind instru-ments require careful-ly controlled breathing. As long as I was raging, I couldn’t modulate my breathing to produce disciplined notes. You can’t make music when you’re out of control.

We want to hear your

opinions on issues going

on in our communityAfter 20 years of

representing B.C. coast-al First Nations to nego-tiate what U.S.-directed activists labeled the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a weary Dal-las Smith expressed his relief and frustration.

At a ceremony to sign the nal agreement in Vancouver last week, Smith, president of the Nanwakolas Council of remote Central Coast communities like Bel-la Bella, joked that he’s nally out of a job. en he got serious.

“My communities still aren’t better places to live yet,” he said. But the land use agreement with the province and forest com-panies over a vast coast-al area up to the Alaska border means the years ahead will be better.

He said when he started it was like being caught in a divorce be-tween the B.C. forest in-dustry and international environmental groups. Dutch-based Green-peace, its California o -shoot ForestEthics and

others moved on from their Clayoquot Sound battle to the B.C. coast, looking to continue the blockades against log-ging.

“It’s the First Na-tions of the Coast who stood up and said ‘no, this is how it’s going to work’,” Smith said.

How it’s going to work is that logging will continue on 550,000 hectares of coastal forest, with a greater share for First Nations, and with 85 per cent of the region preserved after a century of logging that began with sailing ships.

Aside from a few die-

hards who are either paid to protest or can’t get past issuing de-mands, B.C. aboriginal people have grown tired of being used as props in global de-marketing campaigns directed from San Francisco or Am-sterdam. e protest-ers’ tactic of organizing customer boycotts that damage far-away econ-omies might be good for international fundrais-ing, but it’s bad for poor people.

Formally begun 10 years ago with $30 mil-lion from Ottawa, $30 million from B.C. and $60 million from a group of wealthy U.S. family foundations with a larger anti-development agen-da, the land use plan re-mains under attack.

Among the many protest out ts is Pacif-ic Wild, which has spe-cialized in Great Bear Rainforest campaigns and now needs a new enemy. eir credibil-ity was demonstrat-ed recently when potty-mouthed U.S. pop star

Miley Cyrus decided to speak out against B.C.’s wolf kill.

Typical of celebri-ties, Cyrus had no idea about the struggle to preserve dwindling herds of mountain caribou. She barely knows where B.C. is, a fact made plain when Paci c Wild toured her around the North Coast, far from the Kootenay and South Peace regions where the wolves in question ac-tually roam.

Cyrus’s handlers spoon-fed video and statements to urban media, who were so anx-ious to exploit her global popularity that they played down the fact she was at the wrong end of the province spouting nonsense.

After periodically at-tacking their own B.C. agreement as inadequate, Greenpeace and Forest-Ethics have moved on to what they call the “bor-eal forest,” which we like to call northern Can-ada. e same bully tac-tics with forest products

customers and producers have been featured.

is time, a Quebec company that signed an accord in 2010 is suing Greenpeace for “defama-tion, malicious falsehood and intentional interfer-ence in economic rela-tions.”

Aboriginal compan-ies on the B.C. coast will continue to log, includ-ing areas of old-growth forest and secondary growth. ey will con-tinue to export logs as economics dictate. ey will continue to har-vest animals, including grizzly bears.

And, I expect, they will continue to be sub-jected to attempts to supervise and direct them by members of urban society’s new reli-gion, environmentalism.

e leaders of this movement don’t like peace. It’s bad for their business.

Now it’s possible that an angry drummer could beat the hell out of his drums. at a pissed-o pianist might pound her keyboard mercilessly. Or that a furious trumpeter could shatter chandeliers. It might be therapeutic. But I doubt if it’s music.

Similarly, I doubt if a sculptor would risk ruin-ing a block of marble by attacking it too vigorous-ly with his chisel.

Yes, we can certain-ly speak and act while angry. And we often do. But we often regret it later.

Because anger turns inward. It excludes other emotions. You can’t be loving and angry at the same time. You can’t be boiling and calm.

Years ago, I wrote about anger as one of the Seven Deadly Sins. ose sins all have a paradoxical element. ey’re also virtues—in the right place and time.

Anger, for example, leads to violence, impul-sive behaviour, broken relationships. But with-out anger we would have no justice movements. Anger motivated the civil rights and anti-war movements in the U.S.

It launched the Amer-ican and French revolu-tions. It provided the im-petus for Gandhi’s Salt Marches in India, for the opposition to apartheid in South Africa. Anger fuelled feminists and suf-fragettes.

Anger says—like Peter Finch’s famous rant in the movie Net-work—“I’m not gonna take it anymore!”

But rst you have to bring that blaze under control.

For good reason, most meditation prac-tices (possibly exclud-ing self-hypnosis) focus on breathing. Breathing

is the most basic act of life. e Bible considered it the evidence of life. In both Greek and Hebrew, the word for “breath” also means “spirit.”

If we are alive, we breathe. But breath-ing is also likely our least conscious act. We weren’t conscious of our rst breath; we prob-ably won’t be of our last.

Most of the time, we’re not even aware of our breathing; we just do it.

Until something up-sets us. Like a driver who lacks the common cour-tesy to come to the door and say, “sorry.”

Breathing an unconscious act that sustains us allTAYLOR FROM A4

North Okanagan residents have come to expect

that members of Vernon Search and Rescue will drop everything during an emergency.

But imagine what would happen if the vol-unteer unit wasn’t there? Who would spend hours looking for lost snow-mobilers in the back-country? Who would help look for a missing child or someone who

fell o a boat? Who would help the RCMP gather vital evidence during a case?

e same could be said of the Central Oka-nagan Search and Res-cue, based out of Ke-lowna.

e North Oka-nagan, like all commun-ities across the province, bene t directly because of the civic-minded spir-it of SAR volunteers.

“Within ground

search and rescue there are roughly 100,000 hours of volunteer time donated to searches

(provincewide). To re-place these would cost more than $5 million annually in direct salary

dollars,” said Todd Stone, B.C.’s transportation minister.

at’s why the B.C. government’s recent an-nouncement of $10 mil-lion for SAR training, administrative support and equipment upgrades is welcome news.

It will take consider-able pressure o the units which have large-ly been left covering the costs of their own activ-ities. Instead of fundrais-

ing, more time can be directed towards training and ensuring equipment is in top condition.

However, while Vic-toria’s assistance is posi-tive, it’s only one-time support. Yes, it’s $10 mil-lion but it won’t go far among 80 units, particu-larly given the expense of equipment.

As Stone pointed out, the SAR volunteers save all of us about $5 mil-lion a year. If we had to pay sta for search dut-ies, it’s unlikely the ser-vice would exist. One-o funding is great but more needs to be done to en-sure the long-term vi-ability of our search and rescue teams.

BARRY GERDING

Kelowna orchard-ist Fred Steele has been re-elected for another term as president of the B.C. Fruit Growers As-sociation.

Steele, who was be-ing challenged by North Okanagan fruit grower Jeet Dukhia, said he was relieved that the cam-paign was over.

“It starts about mid-November and con-

tinues until the conven-tion vote. It’s about sev-en weeks of mayhem,” Steele said.

“You have to get or-ganized, nd out where your support is or might be, gure those things out before you decide whether or not to take a run at it.”

Steele said he ex-pected a close election and that Dukhia ran a strong campaign.

“I think this is the

third time he and I have run against each other now. He ran a good, tough campaign and I respect that,” Steele said.

Looking forward, Steele says the fruit growing industry faces a more optimistic future in the short-term after many years of hard times for orchardists across the Okanagan Valley.

“Last year was the rst time in 32 years that our industry didn’t shrink,

which says someone has con dence about some-

thing or that (downward trend) would have con-

tinued,” Steele said. at optimism, he

says, is a combination of many factors, starting with successful inroads being made for selling premium cherries and apples to South Asian markets.

He says nding nan-cial support from prov-incial and federal gov-ernment agencies for such things as replant-ing and crop insurance are an easier sell when the BCFGA is bringing an optimistic message to the table.

“If you keep talk-ing about how every-one is going broke and the world is coming to an end, those govern-ment agencies start look-ing to other groups to help them out instead,”

he said. “ ey listen more

when you come to them from a more positive dir-ection.”

Steele said he was hesitant to call the Oka-nagan fruit growers com-pletely uni ed, as there remains a streak of in-dependence evident among many local grow-ers.

“In some areas we are uni ed, and some areas we are not,” he said.

“But it’s important for the whole industry to come together and act as leaders.”

Steele said compe-tition should always be welcomed among grow-ers, but sometimes the industry needs to stand together to present a uni ed voice when advo-cating for support of the industry.

In his speech to the BFGA members gath-ered at the Ramada Ho-tel convention room in Kelowna on Satur-day, Steele described the BCFGA president’s pos-ition as one that requires patience, vision, diplo-macy and optimism.

“You have to pick your ghts, know when to stick your feet in the mud and when to back o . You need to have good judgment,” he said.

“As an industry, we need to come together to nd common interest solutions.”

Also elected to the executive, all by acclam-ation, were vice-presi-dent Pinder Dhaliwal, north district represent-atives Sukhev Goraya, Surjit Nagra and Tony Nijjar, and south district representatives Ravinder Bains, Sukhdeep Brar and Peter Simonsen.

Cedrics executive dir-ector Veronica Osborn said, “Unpublished B.C. writers aged 50 and bet-ter can submit their work between Feb. 1 and May 1 when the call for sub-missions will close. Just in time for Val-entine’s day, Canadian singer/pianist Rod Rus-sell will be appearing at the Creekside e-atre in Lake Country on Feb. 13.

e concert will be a celebration of the best loved songs from what Russell called the Gold-en Age of pop music: e 1940s, ’50s, ’60, and ’70s.

“I’ve selected songs that are so well written that they’re timeless and cross all genres so any-one who grew up in the

era will enjoy them,” said Russell. “I try very hard

to make every song spe-cial so it’s an event on its

own and I encourage the audience to sing with me on some of them.

“My concerts are very casual and intimate as if the audience is sitting around my living room.”

Russell is a Can-adian pianist, singer and music coach who lives in Kelowna. Classical-ly trained, he began his career in popular piano while still in his teens, went on to play in dance bands and in his own dinner clubs as well as at large events. He has logged more than 1,200

performances and also created a home learning course to teach people his unique way of playing that has now been used by more than 70,000 people around the world.

Russell has been seen in magazines such as Reader’s Digest, e London Times and USA Today.

Russell will play music made popular by Simon and Garfunkel, Anne Murray, Billy Joel, Harry Belafonte, Joe Cocker, Kenny Rogers and James Taylor.

Love Story Runners Up:

Our Love Story begins in 1960 in Richmond,B.C. when I met the new boy next door. I was 13 and he was 15. Little did we know that we would become best friends for life. During the next 5 years we built a friendship, attended school together and shared each other’s graduations. During that time Martin pursued a dream of working on a farm in Alberta and the handwritten love letters f lowed between us for almost a year. In 1965 we were married and in 1967 we were

blessed with our 1st of 3 children. In 1970 we moved to Winf ield for employment. We have raised our three children here and still

feel fortunate to call Winf ield our home for 46 years. During our courting years one of our favorite dates was to take a drive out to

the country in the Fraser Valley. To this day we love to pack a lunch and take a day trip taking photos. Our 3 children have blessed us

with 5 wonderful grandchildren ages 10-17 who light up our lives. This summer our 50th Wedding Anniversary was acknowledged with a surprise celebration by our family. This is our Love Story (soul mates

and best friends Forever) - Martin and Darlene Thiessen

My romantic Love Story begins in 1980 with the f irst of many anniversary picnics. Every year since, my wife and I have packed a picnic and found a different location to celebrate in the month of June. Some years have been great with lots of sunshine. Others have been rainy and cold outside so we

simply spread out a blanket in the living room for our annual event. We have celebrated with our daughters and friends but the most important thing every

year is we are together. - Ray Turner

e factory will house more than 350 jobs for top technology talent that the bank says “will play a leading role in re-de ning banking for the digital age.”

Still, people who be-lieve in Bitcoin feel that change is coming in the world of currency.

“Bitcoin has the power to disrupt the banking system,” said Merrill. “It’s a power-ful idea and a fascinating technology. As a curren-cy it’s a big idea.

“One-third of the world’s population is what’s called unbanked: People who don’t use banks. But Bitcoin can deliver payments to everyone’s phone.”

••• ere is conspiracy

theory in this story as well.

Several people con-tacted to discuss Bitcoin or blockchain technol-ogy wouldn’t talk on the record about it.

ogy is ‘disruptive innova-

tion’—advances in tech-nology that change the way industries operate.

As an example, Net ix was disruptive to video stores like Blockbuster as

online movie watching supplanted the way we watch movies at home.

Gone are the days when you strolled through a video store to

rent a movie. Another example is

a company like Uber,

which has disrupted the taxi industry or Airbnb which has changed the landscape of the hotel industry.

Matt Crowell is the CEO of Kelow-na-based tech company GetIn eLoop. He has a master’s degree in in-novation and entrepre-neurship.

When it comes to ad-vancements in technol-ogy, Crowell said there are two types of innov-ations.

One is incremental where something is con-stantly improved such as the television, which over the years has gone from black and white, to col-our to high de nition.

e other type of in-novation is radical or dis-ruptive, where some-thing changes an indus-try entirely and creates a new market.

“ e two biggest trends in technology and innovation are FinTech, which is nancial tech-nology, and mobile,” said Crowell

“Bitcoin is trying to play a role in FinTech but the banks are mov-ing into the technology space very quickly. Mo-bile is changing every-thing because everything is happening on our phone and its disrupting every single industry.”

Crowell said ma-jor companies are now fully researching ways to radically innovate and change themselves by creating divisions that are tasked with thinking outside of the box, trying to nd the innovation before they are disrupted by an outside company.

“To radically innov-ate, some of the really big companies actually cre-ate divisions within their own company and have them work on projects that are separate from what they do,” he said.

“To radically innovate, you need to be thinking so far outside of the box and sometimes in these large companies it’s very hard to change.”

Some of the big banks have taken on this phil-osophy.

Scotiabank an-nounced in October what it called a “signi -cant milestone” with the development of a Digital Factory designed to de-liver digital innovations and solutions for the bank’s customers.

Several people con-tacted to discuss Bitcoin or blockchain technol-ogy wouldn’t talk on the record about it.

One nancial adviser with knowledge of virtu-al currency, called block-chain technology im-portant but Bitcoin a bit too aky to put his name be-hind.

“ ere is so much noise around this subject right now,” he said.

“What’s really in-teresting is how this is going to impact the con-ventional players.

“Visa and Master-Card have spent tons of money on this. Major ( nancial) clearing hous-es are now taking and re-ceiving payments using blockchain. e potential to reduce costs is huge.”

A Kelowna man who was looking to purchase Bitcoin and send it over-seas, avoiding the large fees normally associat-ed with having to send

money through West-ern Union or PayPal, also didn’t want to give his name when speak-

ing about Bitcoin and why he was looking to use virtual currency.

“I just don’t want my name as-sociated with this,” he said.

Sever-al Kelowna banks con-tacted for comment

couldn’t provide clar-ity on the future of vir-tual currency vs. trad-itional banking, with one vice-president of nance saying he didn’t know enough about the issue to comment.

Scotiabank was able to provide comment on the blockchain technology after the request went to its communications de-partment in Toronto.

“Scotiabank believes that distributed ledg-

er technology including blockchain is a power-ful and exciting platform that can be leveraged to improve the custom-er experience,” the state-ment read.

“We have a dedicat-ed team focused on ex-ploring the technology and how it can be used within the bank as well as with our customers. As part of this explora-tion, we have joined the r3CEV consortium and are working with others in the industry on if and how banks can change the way they operate and interoperate.”

Proponents of Bitcoin say the technology could allow people to cut ties with the current, main-stream nancial sys-tem and lead to so much more individual power.

their own bank. ere’s no third party. ere’s no banker, no bureaucrat, no government. If we take those three out of the equation, how much money would we save?”

•••In the end, Bitcoin

proponents say it’s a vi-able alternative to the traditional banking sys-tem.

As a way to send money overseas it gives users an option with low fees compared to what’s out there now.

For merchants who can su er great loss-

es in charge-backs from credit card companies if they happen to process a stolen credit card with-out knowing, Bitcoin eliminates that.

It has a nite sup-ply with only 21 mil-lion Bitcoin ever to be released, meaning more Bitcoin can’t be manu-

factured out of thin air. Could it disrupt the banking industry as we know it, or will the banks adapt and nd uses for the blockchain and keep the majority of its cus-tomers? And where the heck is all this debt going to end?

At this point there

seems like more ques-tions than answers.

“We’ve seen this through history, when you create money out of nothing, the value even-tually goes to zero,” said foreign exchange trader Derrick Nicholson.

“Every currency in the world that didn’t have

some sort of backing be-hind it, not just paper assets, has gone to zero.

“Whether it’s Bitcoin backed by gold or we go back to the gold stan-dard, I’m not sure. But what we have today is just not working.”

Virtual money pays directly to your smart phoneMONEY FROM A11

‘‘One-third of the world’s popu-lation is what’s called unbanked: People who don’t use banks. But Bitcoin can deliver pay-ments to every-one’s phone.”
