Proud to support Oyama Traditional

School!

On January 12th, clown and magician Aytahn Ross visited the school and entertained the students with a lively performance. Student engagement was fantastic and several students got to participate in the act!

Update!

Kaiden and Caleb are programming their Lego EV3  Robot to complete several missions on the “MiningBot Challenge” mat. These resource industry-based missions include such tasks as “delivery of aluminum for export”, “recycling scrap metal”, “rehabilitation of a decommissioned mine site” and so forth. This challenge mat was used at the Skills Canada Lego Robotics Programming Challenge last year in Abbotsford and we hope to have some students attend this year’s competition in April.

Exploratory blocks at Oyama Traditional School happen for an hour every Friday afternoon. Students select their first, second and third choice and then intergraded exploratory classes are formed. The choices are Lego Robotics, Coding, LittleBits Electric Circuit Design, Maker Space Construction Challenges with PVC pipe, Paper Bag Scrapbooking, Wacky Science, Cooking, iMovie Film Making, and Knitting. These blocks offer rich personalized learning experiences involving creative and critical thinking and help students embody the District’s 21st Century Attributes of a Learner, those of being a collaborator, contributor, innovator, learner and thinker.

“Have you ever want-ed to showcase your sing-ing and songwriting talents?” asks Jennifer Boal, founder of Lake Country Open Mic Has Talent.

A Lake Country council-lor wants to know if more can be done to enhance the envi-ronment.

Owen Dickie is asking council to direct sta to con-sider the goals of the Blue Dot movement and see if recognition of environmen-tal rights can be incorporat-ed into the o cial communi-ty plan review this year.

“I, like everyone, am con-cerned about the environ-ment,” said Dickie of the rea-son for his notice of motion.

e issue arose after a re-cent presentation by some lo-cal residents about the Blue Dot movement.

“It’s important to take all of the old codgers on the council bench and support younger people,” said Dickie.

e Blue Dot movement, which is part of the David Suzuki Foundation, calls lo-cal communities to pass mu-nicipal declarations respect-ing people’s right to live in a healthy environment.

“Community by commu-

nity, this movement will in-spire decision-makers across our provinces and territories to take notice,” states the Blue Dot website.

“With so many communi-ties calling for action from all levels of government, the next step is to have our provincial and federal governments fol-low suit and pass environ-mental bills of rights.

“Recognition in the Char-ter—the highest law in our country—is the nal step in protecting the right to clean air, fresh water and healthy food for all Canadians.”

Dickie isn’t sure if the dis-trict can follow all of the Blue Dot initiatives.

“If the proposals are achievable, we will look at them. ere will be things we can’t do (because of provincial legislation),” he said.

Dickie is also asking coun-cil to write letters to the pro-vincial and federal govern-ments calling for legislation that recognizes the rights of all citizens to live in a healthy environment.

e B.C. Fruit Grow-ers Association can re-cycle ballots for presi-dent for the third year in a row.

Jeet Dukhia, a Ver-non orchardist, will go up against incumbent Fred Steele, from Kelow-na, during the BCF-GA’s convention Jan. 29 and 30.

“I want to enhance the replant program,” said Dukhia, a former pres-ident who lost to Steele

in 2014 and 2015.“We have to include

new land in the replant program.”

Dukhia insists there is a need for senior govern-ment funding so new va-rieties of fruit trees can be planted on land cur-rently not being used as a way of expanding export markets overseas, includ-ing in Asia.

“We need to increase the level of production,” he said.

“ ere has been lots of success with cherries

and we need to do more with apples.”

Another issue for Dukh- ia is crop insur-

ance.“Early and late cher-

ries are not covered,” he said, adding that new

growers often nd it dif- cult to access insurance.

Steele agrees there is a need to plant trees on land not in production as well as to target trees more than ve years old.

“We’re trying to work with the federal initia-tives program to see all older trees replaced,” he said, adding that markets will open up with new fruit varieties and that will bolster the Okana-gan’s economy.

“We’re creating an in-dustry, new jobs.”

Steele also wants the BCFGA to focus on agri-tourism.

“We want to see a set of rules that’s fair to ev-eryone,” he said.

“Getting this done needs good relationships with all levels of govern-ment. I would like to see closer ties with munici-palities.”

e only person nom-inated for vice-president is Pinder Dhaliwal from Oliver.

e three positions for northern executive di-

rector are being sought by Sukhdev Goraya, Asif Mohammed, Surjit Nagra, Tony Nijjar and Tahir Raza. Nominat-ed for the three south-ern executive director seats are Ravinder Bains, Sukhdeep Brar and Peter Simonsen.

e annual gener-al meeting takes place at the Ramada Hotel in Kelowna.

 e BCFGA rep-resents 500 commercial orchardists.

My cat’s brain runs on a very early version

of Windows. I can al-most see the command structure working its way through his awareness:

“Oh look, a door is opening. I might like to go out.

“I don’t want to seem too eager. I’ll take my time.

“ e door is still open. Oh oh! It’s starting to close.

“Perhaps I should

hurry after all.“Ow, that hurt! Who

shut the door on me?”I don’t write that to

disparage feline intelli-gence. My point is that even thoughts take time to process. ere is al-ways a lag between input and output, impetus and consequence.

e lake in front of my home is a heat sink. It receives its maximum input of solar energy in mid-June. But it con-tinues to get warm-er even as the days grow shorter. It won’t start cooling until early fall. e lake’s output lags months behind the sun’s input.

In the same way, gov-ernments change. But the processes instituted by previous governments keep rumbling on.

Changing institu-tions is like trying to turn

on in our community

With unlicensed marijuana dispensaries popping up in urban ar-eas and thousands of un-regulated medical li-cences for home grow-ing still in legal limbo, the Trudeau government is starting work on its promise to legalize recre-ational use.

Marijuana was a me-dia darling in the recent election, but meeting in Vancouver with provin-cial ministers last week, federal Health Minister Jane Philpott found her-self preoccupied with is-sues deemed more ur-gent.

ese include shifting our post-war acute hos-pital model to commu-nity primary care, tack-ling aboriginal health care needs, pooling phar-maceutical purchases to slow rising costs, and meeting an urgent Su-preme Court of Canada directive to legalize as-sisted dying.

At the closing news conference in Vancouver, Philpott was asked how recreational marijuana should be sold.

Licensed medical growers want exclusive rights do it by mail as permitted by the Harp-er government, anoth-er measure forced by our high court.

at would shut out the rash of supposed-ly medical storefronts, which city halls in Van-couver and elsewhere imagine they can reg-ulate.

Philpott said the ques-tion is “premature” and federal-provincial justice ministers were dealing with it at their meeting. Ottawa will have a “task force” too.

Vancouver descended into a pot store free-for-

all due to benign neglect from council and police, and Victoria isn’t far be-hind.

Vancouver Coun. Ker-ry Jang, a rare voice of reason in the Big Smoke, has protested dispensa-ries using street hawkers to attract young buyers, and pot stores setting up near schools.

Other communi-ties, more aware of their limitations, have resist-ed issuing business li-cences. One recent pro-posal in the Victoria sub-urb of View Royal came from a fellow who insist-ed marijuana extract had cured his cancer. is is typical of claims that proliferate on the Inter-net, and is one of many warning signs about dis-pensaries that put up red cross signs to sell pot products with exot-ic names.

B.C. Health Min-ister Terry Lake was more forthcoming a few days earlier, responding to a Vancouver report-er who judged marijuana more interesting than his just-announced plan to

hire 1,600 more nurses by the end of March.

Lake noted that On-tario Premier Kathleen Wynne is keen to sell marijuana through the province’s monopoly li-quor stores. B.C.’s gov-ernment liquor store union has also endorsed this idea, forming an un-likely alliance with non-union private stores to get in on the action.

“ ere are public health o cials that I’ve talked to who say that the co-location of mar-ijuana and liquor sales is not advisable from a public health perspec-tive,” Lake said.

“I think whatever we do it has to be highly regulated, quality control has to be excellent and above all we must protect young people.”

Yes, liquor stores check ID. But the notion that marijuana might be sold next to beer and vodka in government stores deserves sober sec-ond thought, and seri-ous scienti c work of the kind that has shown damage to developing

brains from teenage mar-ijuana use.

Of course all of this urban hand-wringing over pot stores ignores the de facto legalization that has existed across B.C. for decades.

e Nelson Star had a funny story last week about a local wom-an’s discovery on Goo-gle Earth. Zooming in on area mountains, one nds not only the Purcell landmark Loki Peak, but also Weed Peak, Grow Op Peak, Cannabis Peak and Hydroponic Peak.

Whatever the source of this cyber-prank, it could also be applied to other regions of B.C.

For the record, I’ll re-state my long-standing position that legalization is the only logical answer.

I’ll say the same about other drugs that drive most B.C. crime, but that’s a subject for anoth-er day.

a supertanker. e pi-lot turns the wheel, but 500,000 tons of iner-tia wants to keep going straight ahead.

at’s why I worry about those supertank-ers—burdened with crude oil, lique ed nat-ural gas, bitumen, what-ever—threading the maze of narrow passages on B.C.’s north coast.

Still, turning a super-tanker is easy compared to redirecting an entire industry.

“Even as the global warming crisis makes it clear that coal, natural gas and oil are yesterday’s energy,” writes activist Bill McKibben.

“ e momentum of two centuries of fossil fuel development means new projects keep emer-ging in a zombie-like fashion.”

At the Paris climate Conference in Decem-ber, 155 countries vowed to reduce their depend-ence on fossil fuels.

At the same time, pipeline projects queued up waiting for approv-al. McKibben listed 15 in North America alone, ve of them in Canada.

He could have add-ed dozens more in the Middle East and Cen-tral Asia.

“And it’s not just pipe-lines,” McKibben con-tinued. “I couldn’t begin to start tallying up the number of proposed li-quid natural gas termin-als, prospective coal ex-port facilities and new oil ports, fracking wells and mountaintop removal coal sites…”

Entrenched practices develop their own mo-mentum.

e oil industry is little over 150 years old.

e world’s rst oil well was dug in 1858 near Sarnia, Ont.; Can-ada didn’t become a ma-jor oil producer until 1947, when Imperial’s Leduc #1 gushed on line.

By comparison, the Roman Catholic Church has built up 2,000 years of momentum. So im-agine the task confront-ing Pope Francis, as he tries to adjust the course of a ship with 1.3 billion passengers.

My own church is barely 90 years old. Yet it too struggles to over-come inertia.

I doubt if many of my church’s 2.5 million members and adherents still believe in a aming hell somewhere under-ground.

Yet its o cial state-ment of faith, originally patched together by four denominations, still as-

serts that “the nally im-penitent shall go away into eternal punish-ment…”

Ministers must be in “essential agreement” with that; if they dare change their minds, die-hard traditionalists may challenge their ministry.

By comparison with institutions, my cat’s mind works blinding-ly fast.

United Way hopes to overcome fundraising goal shortfall of $400,000

Two weeks are left and the United Way of Central and South Okanagan/Similkameen (CSO) fundraising campaign is still short of its $1.5 million goal.

With the fundraising campaign to wrap up Jan. 31, the total raised so far amounts to $1.1 million.

“All donations raised here, stay here,” reiterated Shelley Gilmore, executive director of United Way CSO.

“With one in ve children liv-ing in poverty in our region, we’re hoping to tackle the root cause of poverty in our communities and make a dent in these startling sta-tistics.

“We are so thankful for all the

workplace campaigns, individuals and socially-conscious companies that donate annually.

“ e needs are greater every year so we hope that donors will still consider giving before the end of January. Your gift makes such a di erence in the lives of so many.”

Last year, the United Way in-vested more than one million back into the community in three focus areas—to support vulnerable kids, youth, families and seniors.

A complete list of funded pro-grams and impact investments from United Way is available on-line at unitedwaycso.com/what-we-do/.

Gilmore says the United Way

serves a diverse and broad region, collecting donated funds sep-arately for each region (Central and South Okanagan) with those funds allocated based on the need and focus area.

Gilmore says employee work-place campaigns make up a sig-ni cant portion of the annual campaign and 16 workplaces have yet to report so they expect to see a hike in the total by the end of January.

To donate to the United Way campaign, call 250-860-2356 or toll-free (outside Kelowna/West Kelowna) 1-855-232-1321 or do-nate online at www.unitedwayc-so.com.

KEVIN PARNELL In the rst two weeks

discount airline New-Leaf had been accepting bookings from new mar-kets in Winnipeg, Re-gina and Hamilton the ood-gates had opened with bookings of people wanting to y into the Kelowna International Airport.

Big White Ski Resort had con rmed 74 new bookings into its resort while NewLeaf over-all booked thousands of ights into previously untapped markets.

But that all ground to a halt last week with an announcement from NewLeaf that they would be suspending reservations and o er-

ing refunds after an issue arose regarding the prop-er licensing for the air-line.

“It’s been a bit of a nightmare to say the least,” said Michael J. Ballingall, Big White’s sales and marketing manager and the past president of the omp-son Okanagan Tour-ism Association. “We had huge call volumes. Last week we had one of our busiest call days in our history. is was changing the game for people in Regina, Ham-ilton, Winnipeg and people that live around those areas. You could y non-stop and direct to Kelowna. It just proved there is room for a low-cost carrier in this mar-

NewLeaf ’s announce-ment of discount ights as low as $89 one way was also felt in prices on Canada’s two major air-lines as both Westjet and Air Canada almost im-mediately moved to of-fer deals after the origin-al NewLeaf announce-ment.

But less than a full two weeks after New-Leaf ’s announcement, the company suspended bookings while the Can-adian Transportation Agency—the feder-al body that regulates the airline industry—looks into whether a com-pany that does not oper-ate any aircraft, but mar-ket and sell air services to the public, should be re-quired to hold CTA li-cences.

“ e reason why we launched on January 6 is because it was con rmed that we were in full com-pliance of CTA licensing regulations,” said New-Leaf chief executive of- cer Jim Young.

“ e CTA gave us an exemption from holding a licence directly while it reviews its legislation.

“Now, there is ambi-guity in the air as to whether we need to amend the relationship with our air service pro-vider, or whether we need to have a licence ourselves.

We welcome a regu-latory system in which businesses like ours can thrive in Canada as they do in other countries.

As with any success that threatens to change the status quo, there are those that will re-sist that change and take any measures necessary to maintain the exist-ing playing eld, even if it is to the detriment of the vast majority and the bene t of the very few.”

NewLeaf ’s business model had their com-pany in charge of all marketing and sales and they would contract air-plane service from Ke-lowna-based Flair Air-lines, a company that operates ve Boeing 737 airplanes as a char-ter business. In the New-Leaf model, Flair would use two its 737’s for NewLeaf with its pi-lots and ight attendants operating the ight por-tion of the service. Flair has held the proper li-

censing for its planes for more than 10 years but this is the rst time it had an agreement with a company like NewLeaf.

“We think this is a good decision at this point in time,” said Chris Lapointe, Flair’s vice president of commercial operations.

“ e barriers to entry in the commercial travel business are huge.

“I think it was prag-matic of them to say, ‘Let’s get this in order now.’

“It’s not good news but it’s by no means bad news. We would rather have them get their regu-latory issues resolved and clean now rather than starting something and having to stop it partway down the road.”

Both Lapointe and Ballingall expect the ser-vice to at some point re-ceive proper licensing and the previously an-nounced discount ights to be available to the y-ing public.

It’s just a matter of when and if the New-Leaf model will be one that emerges from a few di erent proposals that are currently out there.

“ ere are three or four di erent entities trying to get a third air-line launched in Can-ada,” said Lapointe.

“Finally someone an-nounced it and that made people stand up and pay attention. You can be sure the regu-lator started receiving calls. I’m sure the com-petitors are asking ques-tions. I think it’s going to be tough sledding. e competition is fat and happy and are making lots of money.

“Gasoline (prices) basically went in half and they didn’t reduce their pricing. Both WestJet and Air Canada do a great job, it’s just their pricing scheme.”

For Ballingall at Big White, the frustration of having to refund pack-ages—about 40 per cent of the new book-ings were cancelled while more than half of the people found alternate air fare to Kelowna—has been o set with the positives of opening up new markets of tourists who were able to come directly to Kelowna.

“All this has done is delay the inevitable,” said Ballingall.

e rst weeks of the new year are upon us and perhaps you are one of the many who have been thinking about becom-ing tobacco free in 2016.

What an amazing gift to give to yourself, your family and friends!

Approximately 550,000 British Colum-bians smoke and more

than 70 per cent of those people say they wish they could quit.

Making a plan to quit can increase your chan-ces of success.

Make sure your plan includes a quit date to help you get started on your tobacco free journey

and be sure to tell the supportive people in your life when that day is.

If you have tried to quit before, think about what worked, what did not work and how you might use that informa-tion to make your next quit attempt your last one.

Past attempts are real learning opportunities so stay positive and plan

one step at and time.Support and resources

are available and can bol-ster your success.

Led by the City of Kelowna, the group also includes the region-al district and the prov-ince, the Friends of Mis-sion Creek, the Oka-nagan Nation Alliance, the Westbank First Na-tion and the Central Okanagan Land Trust. e group is focussed on restoring Mission Creek

back toward its origin-al ows, before dikes straightened the creek.

Originally as it en-tered Kelowna, Mission Creek would have wan-dered and meandered for 33 kilometres before dumping into Okanagan Lake.

As Kelowna de-veloped and dikes were built to control the ow, the creek was changed

and now hurtles over the same stretch of land in just 11 kilometres.

But things are starting to change and the Mis-sion Creek Restoration Initiative is nearly com-plete the rst phase of restoring Mission Creek closer to its historic-al route.

Working on a 800 metre stretch from the Casorso Bridge down-

stream, the south-side dike has been moved, in-creasing the width be-tween the dikes on either side of the creek from about 40 metres to about 140 metres wide.

at will allow Mis-sion Creek to meand-er and more natural-ly ow as opposed to the water careening down a straight line towards Okanagan Lake.

Kamann says bringing a more natural ow back to the creek will have numerous bene ts.

“It will increase the amount of spawn-ing areas for the stream spawning (kokanee), it will bene t the quality of the water going in the lake and that’s huge. It will promote more wild-life right from frogs to birds to deer and all of

those have some sort of minor or major input into the health of the creek and the lake itself.”

e widening of Mis-sion Creek is going to be a long process that can only take place when landowners near the creek agree to partner with the MCRI.

In this case, MCRI, led by the City of Ke-lowna, purchased the rst parcel of land from the Casorso family in 2012. e next parcel followed and by 2014 the group partnered with engineering students at UBC Okanagan who worked on the design of the new dike.

Construction began last year and as of this week it is largely com-plete with nishing work on the dike and clean-

up still to take place and in the summer (when al-lowed by the federal De-partment of Fisheries) more work will take place to help create a few meanders.

Several sh and game clubs have already stepped forward with donations but Kamann says there are more locat-ed in every city around Okanagan Lake that can step forward to sup-port the project because it bene ts the entire re-gion.

Along with the Oceo-la donation and ongoing support, Trout Unlimited donated $5,000 and the Peachland Sportsmen’s Association also $5,000.

ere are many other funding partners as well.

e City of Kelowna had set aside $1.4 mil-

lion to help with prop-erty acquisition while two major grants gave the project a serious push as MCRI and its part-ners were awarded a $250,000 grant from DFO and a $380,000 grant from the Habi-tat Conservation Trust Fund.

At the City of Ke-lowna, Todd Cashin is the man in charge of the project.Cashin has been working on it in various levels since 2001 with the regional district.

But it was spring of 2007 when Mission Creek saw ood levels hit a 50-year high that really signi ed it was time to get to work.

In 2012 and 2013, three separate ood events occurred on Mis-sion Creek as water lev-els reached unprecedent-ed levels.

It’s this ooding that is the main reason for the work, along with creat-ing better habitat for sh, and wild creatures liv-ing along the creek, said Cashin.

“Absolutely everyone bene ts from Mission Creek whether it’s in your homes with water quality, helping out ir-rigation for agriculture and supporting rainbow and kokanee sh stocks and species at risk,” said Cashin.

“ at stu is all real-ly important but in my mind what’s more im-portant, with climate change as the big train coming at us, is Kelowna is on a ood plain.

“We’ve seen ood-ing in other commun-ities and we need to pay attention to that. Mov-ing the dikes back and giving the creek some more room is an import-ant rst step.”

Hugh Gloster’s retire-ment was a quick one.

Gloster retired from his role of Central Okanagn School Dis-trict superintendent at the end of 2015.

On Jan. 4, he began his new job—project manager for the renew-al of the Faculty of Edu-cation program at UBC Okanagan.

roughout his 36 years in the Okanagan, the former teacher, prin-cipal, administrator, and leader, has seen it all.

Gloster has occu-pied every education role within the public school spectrum, from adminis-tration to teaching.

During his tenure as superintendent, Gloster focused on developing a culture of collaboration, which he already sees as an emphasis in the re-newed Bachelor of Edu-cation (BEd) program at UBC.

“Two heads are better than one,” said Gloster.

“We must work in teams and networks to best meet the students’ needs.”

During his career, Gloster has seen many changes to the B.C. edu-cation agenda.

“When I began teach-ing, it used to be accept-able for teachers to go into their classrooms and work in isolation,” Gloster said.

“But we’ve learned that collaboration is the key. We must work in teams and networks to continually improve our practice and learn from each other. Building a community of learners is critical.”

Gloster brings with him an understanding of school districts and pro-cesses of school boards that will help the next generation’s educators nd their t within the

renewed BEd program and their chosen careers.

“School districts want to develop students and equip them with the skills to be learners, thinkers, innovators, col-laborators, and contribu-tors,” he said.

“If we can help our students acquire these skills, we will serve them well.”

UBCO’s director of the Faculty of Educa-tion, Susan Crichton, is thrilled that Gloster is joining the university and is bringing such an abundance of experience.

“We are very pleased to welcome Mr. Gloster to the education team,” said Crichton.

“He brings a wealth of understanding and an outside perspective that ultimately bene ts our students and the next generation of learners.

“He is a proven friend of education and learn-

ing, and we look forward to working together.”

e renewed BEd program, which launches in 2017, will equip stu-dent teachers with the ability to teach at all levels and in a variety of teaching and learning contexts.

Gloster said he believes it will help prepare educators to face the daily challenges associated with their evolving roles.

Some of the nancial pressure faced by pro-spective business stu-dents in B.C. can be re-duced, thanks to David Black, owner of Black Press.

Graduating high school students in 37 B.C. school districts, in-tending to study business at the UVIC’s Gustavson School of Business, can apply for a $5,000 schol-arship.

e Black Press Busi-ness scholarship is awarded based on aca-demic merit, leadership and a demonstrated de-

sire to make a positive di erence in the world. Students must apply to the Gustavson School of Business, Bachelor of Commerce Program be-fore Feb. 28 to be eli-gible. Information about the scholarship is online at: www.gustavson.uvic.ca/blackpress.

e scholarship was established in 2008 by Black to give students from across B.C. access to a business education.

He chose the Gus-tavson School of Busi-ness because of the in-novative program for-

mat. Students spend the

last two years of the pro-gram fully immersed in the business school where they can special-ize in entrepreneurship, service management, international business or management where they customize a program that suits their interests.

Every student takes at least two paid co-opera-tive work terms, has the opportunity to partici-pate in an international exchange, and learns about sustainable busi-ness practices.

e Oyama Com-munity Hall is getting a boost from taxpayers.

Lake Country coun-cil will provide a $3,060 grant to the Oyama Community Club to assist with the costs of

emergency repairs to the furnace.

“It’s di cult to raise big dollars so they can come to the municipal-

ity,” said Mayor James Baker of a District of Lake Country fund the community halls in Oyama, Win eld and

Okanagan Centre can access for capital works.

District sta had rec-ommended the grant.

“ e society has cash

in the bank to pay for the emergency repairs but this expenditure would further erode its working capital which is used for

operational expenses and contingencies,” said Rose Bronswyk Kassa, chief -nancial o cer.

e $3,060 grant will be reduced by $435, which is the unused por-tion of a 2012 grant for re escapes and electric-al repairs that had not been returned to the dis-trict yet because of an ac-counting oversight.

Since 2006, the Oyama Commun-ity Club has received $180,000 in assistance from the municipality.

KATHY MICHAELS

A better grasp on the number of men and women struggling with homelessness in the Central Okanagan should be known next month, following a community-wide count.

e federal government is funding the local endeavour, which will be led by the Central Okanagan Foundation, alongside counts in 29 other Canadian com-munities.

e aim is to create a national understanding of homelessness, as some communities have never un-dertaken the task.

Kelowna has done its own homeless counts in the past, with the last being completed three to four years ago. Other communi-ties around the country have also taken on the task. e problem has been that the methodologies from area to area di er, and that under-mines the results.

Randy Benson, executive direc-tor, of Kelowna’s Gospel Mission, said the study should yield useful information for those who make helping Kelowna’s street people

their business. “It gives us a baseline,” Benson

said, noting that the Gospel Mis-sion will o er assistance with the count, but the Central Okanagan Foundation is really the lead.

“A lot of times we are asked if homelessness is increasing or de-creasing, but we need a consistent starting point to see if numbers go up or down in the next couple years. It will give us a clearer pic-ture of the community at large.”

at picture, he said, will likely come as a surprise to many Kelow-na residents.

“ ere is a lot of homelessness you don’t see. Our outreach work-ers know where the camps are, and where the homeless hang out. If you come down Leon Avenue or go to the Gospel Mission, you see people there, but the problem ex-tends beyond those places.”

Even resources serving the homeless that can be seen are be-ing stressed beyond normal. Usu-ally at this time of year the num-ber of people using local services begins to decrease. is year the full capacity of 100 beds has been reached more than once. On av-

erage, 80 to 90 beds are used each night.

Daytime food and support ser-vices are also seeing heightened demand.

Benson couldn’t say what’s causing increased pressure on ser-vices—Kelowna’s high cost of housing and low supply has been an issue for years. He did, howev-er, note the numbers of seniors and women using the mission’s services have increased.

He’s hoping that the home-less count will help suss out some clearer explanations of what’s causing the rise.

If not, the count should certain-ly help the new City of Kelow-na sta er who will be dedicated to dealing with homelessness.

Late last year Kelowna city council decided to hire a social is-sues co-ordinator who will deal with homelessness. eir start date will be in the late spring or ear-ly summer.

e need for the position be-came apparent in 2015, when city bylaw o cers reported deal-ing with twice as many homeless camps than they had seen before.

Many Kelowna residents are making one of their most import-ant New Year’s resolutions ever this month.

January is Alzheimer aware-ness month and they’re becoming Dementia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about dementia so they can be supportive and inclu-sive toward people with the illness, which has become one of the coun-try’s most pressing health issues.

Statistics suggest three out of four

area residents know someone living with dementia.

“People a ected by dementia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can sup-port them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them,” said Carly Gronlund, regional educa-tion and support coordinator for the non-pro t Alzheimer Society of B.C. for the North and Central Okanagan.

“ rough individual actions we

can raise awareness of dementia and reduce the stigma attached to it.”

e Dementia Friend campaign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s awareness month, which runs until the end of January.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, said Gronlund.

e process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. e next step is to understand ve simple things about dementia:

• It is not a natural part of aging

• It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can a ect think-ing, communicating and doing everyday activities

• It is possible to live well with de-mentia

• ere is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia, and

• e Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s North and Central Okanagan branch is here to help people with dementia and their care partners.

 at knowledge can easily trans-

late into action at home and work, said Gronlund.

e Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link, connects people a ected by demen-tia with information, Society sup-port services and programs such as Minds in Motion, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey.

Become educated on dementia by visiting www.alzheimerbc.org.
