Hours before vehi-cles began traveling free-ly over a new, four-lane highway from Win� eld to Oyama on the week-end, o� cials from all lev-els of government as well as members of the pub-lic took part in an o� -cial opening that cele-brated the history of the route the new Highway 97 takes.

And while the major-ity of the 26,000 vehicles a day that will use the nine-kilometre stretch likely won’t know they are passing over sacred grounds, those in attend-ance at the opening were certainly aware of the signi� cance of the new highway.

Not only in terms of safety for the traveling public, but in cooper-ation between senior and local government as well as area First Nations groups.

“� is highway might only be nine kilometres long but at the end of the day it’s a re� ec-tion on how all levels of people can work togeth-er to get something ac-complished,” said Byron Louis, the chief of the Okanagan Indian Band.

“� ese are the types of relationships that need to go on in the future. � ey say transportation and education are two things that drive econ-omies. We have both here. � is is transporta-tion but also education because of the things that have been found here and preserved. � ere was a � shing net

found that was laid out just as it was thousands of years ago and it has been preserved.”

It was an import-ant and emotional day for those involved as the face of the community of Lake Country changed forever with the new highway opening and the old highway, now known as Pelmewash Parkway, set to be taken over by the District of

Lake Country.But it was the past

that was fresh on many people’s minds, begin-ning with the ceremon-ial prayer, spoke in Eng-lish by OIB elder Ranger Robins.

“I’m not going to speak in our tradition-al language because I get choked up some-times…I’m at a loss for words” said Robins.

Lake Country may-or James Baker has been talking about that old stretch of road that runs along Wood Lake for a long time and at a couple di� erent levels of local government.

Baker was a member of the Central Okanagan Regional District when he was � rst involved in discussions over the old Highway 97, now Pelmewash Parkway.

So Baker was looking forward to what is next as well as back over years of work to get the high-way replaced on Friday, when the new highway opened to tra� c.

“It’s great that this

� nally comes to fruition,” said Baker, in a one-on-one interview with the Lake Country Calendar before making his public remarks at the opening of the highway.

“We’ve been talk-ing about this since the 1980s. First they were going to widen the high-way, then they were go-ing to four-lane it.”

As discussions on the highway and what to do with the stretch of road that was becoming more and more dangerous as tra� c � ows increased continued, Baker made his way from the region-al district table to Lake Country council cham-bers.

“� is really started in 2005 when we made it

one of our priorities to get the road � xed up,” said Baker, who cred-ited former Oyama ward councillor Noreen Guenther with putting a real push on the need for a new highway.

Now living and work-ing in the private sec-tor in Vernon, Guenther was there at the open-ing, proud to see the new highway opened after so many years of tragic ac-cidents.

It was safety that was on her mind as she at-tended the celebration with her family.

“I’m really happy, this is something we worked on for years,” Guenther told the Calendar.

“I know the new road-way won’t guarantee an

accident won’t happen but it will give drivers the

chance to do those ac-cident avoidance tech-

niques.”One of the techniques

Guenther used in her lobbying e� orts over the years was to join togeth-er with the Jammery and create a speci� c jam for the old Highway 97 using the words tra� c jam and a creative de-scription to send to gov-ernment.

“It was very import-ant to keep on top of the issue especially being in a small community,” she said.

“What we did with the jam was tried to grab the attention of every-one.”

And so for Lake Country council, now with Baker as its mayor, the time has come to cre-ate something new from

the old highway. � ere have been pub-

lic consultations and planning sessions and council is expected to see its � rst report from DLC sta� in September.

Baker too was think-ing of safety as he got set to open the new high-way, but he was also ex-cited for the future or Pelmewash.

“It’s just great,” he said.

“We now have six kilometres of lake-shore. It’s an old road but we can make it bet-ter. But this makes tra� c so much safer. � ere are a lot of commuters be-tween Vernon and Lake Country and Vernon and Kelowna and this really will make a di� erence.”

Westbank First Na-tions chief Robert Louie was also in attendance at the opening, which paid tribute to the First Na-tions that � rst inhabited the area with the bless-ing by Robins as well as a song by the OIB drum group Little Hawk.

� e highway is built along the same route First Nations travelled long before roads were built, said Louie.

“� e elder trail was indeed used by our elders over the years for thou-sands and thousands of years,” said Louie.

“Because of the need

to get this (highway built) in a hurry, much of the artifacts remain in the soil and they are at speci� c locations. � ey will have to be (dealt with) in the future.”

Lake Country may-or James Baker, a retired university professor who, interestingly, taught both of the native chiefs when he was teaching univer-sity, said the involvement

of First Nations and the artifacts that have been uncovered are important parts of the story.

“As an archaelogist I appreciate the work that has been done on this,” said Baker.

“� is was an elder’s trail and is now a four-lane highway. As work continues in the valley in the future more work has to be done with respect to First Nations. � is is a great investment for the entire province and for us (the DLC). We inher-it an old road but we can make it better.”

� e new Highway 97 bypasses a dangerous, winding stretch of road that runs along Wood Lake and will soon come under District of Lake Country control and which is now known as Pelmewash Parkway.

F riendships can happen unexpect-edly.

You meet someone, you get along, you dis-cover you’ve become friends.

Maintaining those

friendships takes more work. It means keeping in touch. Sharing experi-ences. Growing together.

And sometimes, mak-ing sacri� ces for the sake of that friendship.

A friend is more than just someone you see every day.

You may have to make time to spend with a friend. Sometimes friends move away; then you have to deliberate-ly, intentionally, make an e� ort to keep the con-nection alive.

In an earlier part of my life, I tried to get that idea across to a group of young people, most-ly teens.

I wanted them to use their friendships as a model for their relation-ship with God.

� eir eyes glazed. With a few exceptions, it had never occurred to them that they had to work at being friends – and this was before Fa-cebook.

cation Minis-ter Amrik Virk

has o� ered some advice for students heading for post-secondary educa-tion this fall.

In a commentary sent to B.C. newspapers, Virk reminded students that his task “is to ensure post-secondary students obtain the experience and quali� cations need-ed to put a paycheque in their back pocket.”

B.C. is forecast to have one million jobs to � ll by 2020, through a com-bination of retirements and economic growth. More than 40 per cent of them will require trades and technical training, and for students, likely a move north.

“My advice to stu-dents is to look at where the jobs are based and tailor their education and training to match,” Virk wrote. “Our popu-lation is concentrated in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancou-ver Island, but as a re-

source-based economy, many directly and in-directly related jobs are located elsewhere.”

� at’s not the only blunt message for stu-dents deciding on a ca-reer.

While defending his ministry’s spending plans in the recent legislature session, Virk described some of the problems that are entrenched.

Parents, particular-ly in immigrant com-munities, push their chil-dren towards medicine, law, dentistry or engin-eering, he noted. Stu-dents themselves gravi-

tate toward areas that are familiar to them, such as teaching.

B.C. universities graduated 2,000 new teachers last year. An-other 850 arrived from out of province and were licensed to teach in B.C.

During the same year, the B.C. school sys-tem hired 800 teachers. And many of those jobs were outside metropol-itan areas.

It’s been hammered into us by the B.C. gov-ernment’s endless “jobs plan” advertising, and a similar campaign by Ot-tawa, that more students need to focus on trades and resource industries.

Virk acknowledges that his budget contains another $1 million for advertising, the same as last year, much of it to re-inforce the need to � ll skilled jobs.

But he danced around the question of wheth-er there will be spaces in technical programs.

NDP critics say the waiting list for these

kinds of programs at Kwantlen University and B.C. Institute of Tech-nology are running be-tween a year and three

years. And they have fre-

quently noted that ad-vanced education spend-ing is budgeted to de-cline by $42 million over the next three years.

Virk said post-sec-ondary institutions working with industry have produced 456 addi-tional seats in high-de-mand programs for this

year. It’s a start.In July, Premier

Christy Clark joined the chorus of premiers pro-testing Ottawa’s plan to claw back $300 million in federal training money to provinces, for its new employer-driven Canada Jobs Grant.

Clark and New Brunswick Premier David Alward were as-signed to � nd an alterna-tive to this drastic shift and report back in the fall.

As usual, the NDP spent lots of time grilling Virk about student debt and the alleged need to reduce it.

Ministry statistics show that about 30 per cent of students take out loans from the fed-eral-provincial pro-gram, and the average is $20,000.

All relationships take work, even one’s relationship with God

ones left home for uni-versity, they were less concerned about losing track of old friends than about collecting a whole bunch of new friends.

I don’t say that to dis-parage youth.

Young people today have had more education than many adults. Many have travelled more widely. But their range of experiences is limited, simply because they ha-ven’t lived as long.

Granted, some adults can go through life re-peating the same old routines over and over, seeing and hearing little new, and learning next to nothing as they go. But simply by having lived longer, adults have had more opportunity for ex-periences.

� ey’ve grown up, gone to work, earned a promotion, lost a job, raised children, made commitments, cared for aging parents, exercised responsibility for others.

Children and teen-agers haven’t lived long enough to have most of those experiences yet.

Kindergarten pu-pils, for example, have had only � ve years to accumulate experien-ces. Within each culture, those experiences will be relatively uniform.

But the longer those children live, the more unique each will become. As gerontologist Greta Riddell-Dixon once told me, “As we grow older, we become more and more like what we’ve al-ways been.”

No two people—not even the closest of

friends—have had exact-ly the same experiences. Each experience colours all the experiences that follow it.

So even when two

adults experience the same event, they may re-act quite di� erently.

No wonder, then, that adults have vastly di� er-ent understandings of whatever they think of as God.

“When I was a child,

I thought like a child,” wrote the apostle Paul.

“But when I be-came an adult, I set aside childish ways….”

I don’t expect every-one to share my per-ceptions of God. � ey can’t, because they ha-ven’t lived my life – nor I, theirs. It’s not that one person’s idea is right, therefore another must be wrong.

Right and wrong apply only when people don’t allow their relation-ship with the holy mys-tery we call God to grow and mature.

You can’t vac-uum-pack a friend-ship and deep-freeze it for safekeeping. It won’t work with humans. Or with God.

The announce-ment on Aug. 1 by TransCan-

ada that it is moving for-ward with its Energy East Pipeline Project has piqued the interest of constituents.

� e project aims to carry Canadian crude from Alberta and Sas-katchewan to re� neries in Quebec and New Brunswick.

TransCanada esti-mates that subject to regulatory approvals, construction would take two years and the oil pipeline could be in ser-vice by the end of 2017.

Back in 2006, when I � rst became the Member of Parliament a couple of constituents wrote to me suggesting a west-east pipeline.

It is intriguing to think that the entire country could bene� t from access to a secure, made in Canada energy supply.

Currently, as of 2012, 83 percent of crude oil deliveries to Atlan-tic Canadian re� neries and 92 percent of oil de-liveries to re� neries in Quebec were imported, primarily from the Mid-dle East, Nigeria and Angola.

Many of us see it as a positive that our coun-try would be less reliant on foreign oil from other countries.

And there is little doubt that construction of the Energy East pro-ject could provide sig-ni� cant economic bene-� ts to Canada while reaching new markets abroad.

However, as the Prime Minister made clear, such energy projects in Canada can only proceed after an independent, science-based environ-mental and regulatory review process is car-ried out by the National Energy Board (NEB) to ensure that it is safe for Canadians.

Recent actions taken by our government to ensure responsible re-source development in Canada should also pro-vide assurance to my constituents that safety is a key priority.

We have introduced new measures to further enhance pipeline safety by increasing the num-ber of oil and gas pipe-

line inspections from 100 to 150 and doubling the number of safety aud-its to identify potential issues and prevent inci-dents from occurring; re-quiring the development and implementation of an emergency manage-ment program focused

explicitly on emer-gency-preparedness and response requirements; requiring companies to develop and imple-ment a security program that anticipates, prevents, manages and mitigates conditions that could adversely a� ect people, property or the environ-ment; introducing new � nes for companies de-signed to preventively address pipeline contra-ventions quickly so lar-ger issues do not arise in the future; and strength-ening consultation with aboriginal groups.

� e government also intends to bring forward more measures that in-clude regulations that will require companies operating major crude oil pipelines to have a min-imum of $1 billion in � -nancial capacity; en-trench the “polluter pays” principle in legislation; and improve transparen-cy by ensuring company’s emergency and environ-mental plans are easily available to the public.

� ese emergency and environmental plans spell out exactly what a company will do, and

the sequence of actions, in the unlikely event of a pipeline rupture or spill.

It is estimated that natural resource develop-ment supports 1.6 mil-lion jobs across Canada and generates billions in tax revenue and royalties annually for critical so-cial programs like health care and education.

With both NDP and Liberal leaders indicat-ing they are not opposed to a west to east pipe-line, it will be interesting to see what kind of feed-back Canadians them-selves provide.

I believe many of us share common ground on the issue of pipelines: we want our children and our grandchildren to be able to bene� t from the economic oppor-tunities and innovation of natural resource de-velopment, and we also want the communities in which we live and raise families to be as safe and sound as possible.

I look forward to hearing your feedback as we watch this proposal and process unfold.

Energy East pipeline project has started people talking

for those who complete their chosen program.

With 23,000 students collecting $41 million in grants, it might be work-ing. For all the fuss about student debt, students pay only about a third of

costs. � e rest is on tax-payers, whether it produ-ces any useful education or not.

Virk is under instruc-tions to review the stu-dent loan program “to � nd further improve-

ments to meet students’ needs.”

Given the magnitude of the gap between what skills our education sys-tem produces and what the economy needs, a larger shift in priorities is

needed.

For the past several weeks, as Lake Country’s new four-lane high-way was nearing completion, some local residents were beginning to take sneak-peaks at what was virgin territory for most folks.

Never before had most laid eyes on the new views of the area with pristine surroundings and a peaceful atmosphere, minus the 26,000 cars that now travel the highway every single day.

� e as-yet-unopened but wel-coming four-lane stretch of perfect pavement had been tested by riders and walkers, including Karen Kry-sco, who sat at the front of the bike lane on Friday afternoon, waiting for the o� cial ceremonies to end so she could o� cially ride the road, even though she had almost made the whole route already.

“I really want to experience this new highway in its entirety,” said Krysco.

“Lots of us have been sneaking on here but since they started working

Sundays it’s been more di� cult.”Among the features of the new

highway, save for the stunning views, are two truck-climbing lanes for slower moving tra� c as well as over-passes near Oceola Road at the south end of Wood Lake and at Gatzke Road at the north end.

Along with work to preserve na-tive artifacts discovered during con-struction (see main story) crews also took care to ensure local wildlife was not disturbed.

Two environmentally sensi-tive areas with bat habitat were pre-

served. Lizards and snakes found along the route during construction were also captured and relocated to two newly constructed reptile dens.

As for the procession of bikers who decided to make the intitial nine kilometre trek along the new highway before it was opened to tra� c, they can now turn their attention to a di� erent route, this one old, yet new as the former high-way became Pelmewash Parkway, a seven kilometre stretch of lake front whose future remains up for discus-sion.

“I am looking more forward to what is going to happen with Pelmewash Parkway and how we will reclaim it (than riding the new highway). When you live in Lake Country you have to bike a lot of hills so I’m looking forward to hav-ing a place that is � at to ride,” she said laughing.

Lake Country council is expected to hear recommendations on the fu-ture of Pelmewash in late Septem-ber.

Even cyclists happy to see new road open—and former highway ‘reclaimed’

With the new High-way 97 opening on Fri-day BC Transit has clari-� ed the route for bus #90, the UBCO Con-nector.

Transit says the route will continue to operate status quo in both dir-ections via Pelmewash Parkway until further analysis can be made on the impacts of the new highway.

Here is the informa-tion on the route:

Southbound:Regular routing

via Highway 97 then Pelmewash Parkway o� -ramp, Pelmewash Parkway, Oyama Road, Greenhow Road, Young Road, Trask Road, Oyama Road, Pelme-wash Parkway, Highway 97, Berry Road, High-way 97 to regular rout-ing.

Northbound:Regular routing via

Highway 97, Berry Road, Highway 97 then Pelmewash Parkway o� -ramp, Pelmewash Parkway, Oyama Road, Greenhow Road, Young Road, Trask Road, Oyama Road, Pelme-wash Parkway, Highway

Note that the #90 UBCO Connector will continue to serve Berry Road Exchange until Sept. 3.

E� ective Sept. 3, the #90 UBCO Connector will not be routing into Berry Road Exchange and will instead bypass the exchange and service the stops on Highway 97 at Beaver Lake Road northbound and at Hill Road southbound. � is change is taking place as a pre-emptive measure to accommodate the ex-pected increase in run-ning time to service Oyama with the intro-duction of the new high-way.

Operating the service this way will allow BC Transit the opportunity to review and monitor impacts the new high-way has on the service reliability of the #90. � is will also allow BC Tran-sit to � eld test potential routing options and dis-cuss these options with stakeholders. A decision on the permanent rout-ing will be made in the near future.

� e Lake Country Customs and Classics Car Show is coming up Sunday, Aug. 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Swalwell Park.

� e popular event is free to the public however the public is being asked to bring donations to the Lake Country Food Bank as admission.

Up to 400 cars are expected this year and a live band will be on hand playing all the old songs from the � fties and sixties.

It’s the 5th annual show and organizers say it is one of the most pristine car shows in the Okanagan Val-ley. Both Ron and Kathy Volk, long time car enthusi-asts and car owners are committed to ensuring that this car show is one of the best in B.C. and they are diligently working on attracting some of the nicest cars in the province.

� e car show is a non pro� t organization with all pro� ts going to charities in Lake Country. Last year $6,000 was donated to the food bank. Twelve trophies will be given out to cars in di� erent categories while there will also be lots of great door prizes.

In this article I am go-ing to focus on the treat-ment of chronic muscle

and nerve pain and why it can be so di� cult to � nd a solution for this type of pain.

It is estimated that over one third of the

adult population in North America su� ers from chronic pain.

� at is a staggering statistic.

It means that one out of every three people out on the street is dealing with ongoing daily pain.

Research shows that suicide is nine times more prevalent in peo-ple with chronic pain than with depression and it is estimated that in the United States, chronic pain a� ects more people than diabetes, cancer and heart disease combined.

So is chronic muscle and nerve pain so com-mon?

To understand this question we have to look at the gradual process that happens to all of our bodies to some degree over many years.

As harsh as it sounds, the reality is that as we age our bodies are slowly

“rotting.” By the time we reach

our 50s and 60s, we will all get some amount of arthritis in our spine.

How fast we “rot” de-pends on a variety of fac-tors including our over-all � tness levels, nutri-tion, the types of jobs we do, family genetics and any traumatic injuries we sustain along the way ie. motor vehicle accidents.

As the arthritis in the spine progresses, the nerves that exit the small spaces between each spi-nal bone (vertebrae) start to become irritated.

In response to this ir-ritation, the muscles that these nerves supply then start to form tight bands.

� ese bands are the ‘knots’ you feel when you rub sore muscles.

� e muscle bands not only cause pain but they also begin to pull at joints and tendons as

well as compress the al-ready sensitive nerves at the spine.

� ese tight bands of-ten do not respond to traditional treatment ap-proaches such as stretch-ing, massage and spinal manipulation.

A form of treatment that has been gaining popularity in the last 5 to 10 years for chronic mus-cle and nerve pain is in-tramuscular stimulation (IMS).

� is treatment tech-

nique was developed by a doctor in Vancouver by the name of Dr. Chan Gunn.

Gunn developed this technique while working with people who were injured on the job and whose pain was not go-ing away with traditional treatment approaches.

What he found in these patients was that by stimulating their tight muscles with an acu-puncture needle, the pain very often signi� cant-ly improved or in many cases disappeared.

So the key to address-ing this chronic pain process is to release the muscle tension.

In an IMS treatment, when the needle enters the taut band the muscle will ‘grab’ the needle and a deep, cramping sensa-tion is felt.

Once the muscle grabs it then typically

will reset itself and begin to relax.

When the tight mus-cle relaxes, a decrease in pain should follow.

IMS is now being rec-ognized and used by physiotherapists and doctors around the world to treat chronic pain of musculoskeletal origin.

If you are su� ering from ongoing muscle or nerve pain and haven’t had success with tradi-tional types of treatment, IMS may be worth try-ing.

� is desire leaves many families want-ing to respect the wish-es of their elder loved one to remain at home as long as possible, but at the same time, feel-ing uncertain about how to cope with the increas-ing demands of care and support that is often re-quired for the older sen-ior.

With all of the ad-vancing technology that is available, I began to wonder if anything had been developed that could give the escalating number of informal care-givers in Canada more peace of mind.

� rough lengthy re-search, I discovered a wealth of information

and insight on the emer-gence of a new � eld of science called gerotech-nology.

What does gerotech-nology mean? It’s an interdisciplinary � eld that examines the rela-tionships between older adults and new technol-ogy.

It encompasses the aspirations for older per-sons by using technol-ogy to enhance full social participation, safety and good health while living independently to an ad-vanced age.

It would appear that within this science lies an exciting new paradigm towards the coming tsu-nami that we will be fa-cing demographically.

One example of the technology that has emerged is a remote monitoring system, now available in Kelowna that allows a family member to monitor a frailer sen-ior from wherever the caregiver is located.

Right now, my 91-year-old mom has just moved in with me. When I am working, I worry about her safety.

She has su� ered three falls resulting in debili-tating fractures in the past.

I have set up motion sensors that notify me by text, phone and/or email, if they have not picked

up any movement in our home for a three hour period.

I can then look in on mom via a pan and tilt camera on my Ipad to be sure that she is okay. It is an added safeguard, should she not press

her emergency response pendant in the case of a fall. Door contacts can also be set up with noti-� cations to both my-self and my husband if she goes outside. I now have my two sisters, one living in Vancouver and

one in Montreal, check-ing in on mom via the system dashboard that is password accessible on-line, allowing them to feel more involved in her care.

Although the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park � re–which was re-membered on its 10th anniversary last week— was not human-caused, there have been no shortage of blazes since then that have start-ed as a result of people’s actions.

In fact, Kayla Pepper, � re information o� cer with the Kamloops Fire Centre, said about half of all � res throughout the province tend to be hu-man-caused on an an-nual basis.

Since April, the Penticton � re zone—which covers Lake Country to the United States border and EC Manning Provincial Park to Beaverdell—has had 20 lightning-caused � res and 27 � res caused by people.

“It could be anything: All-terrain vehicles caus-ing forest � res, we’re still

seeing cigarette butts causing forest � res and camp� res causing forest � res,” said Pepper.

As recently as Wed-nesday afternoon the Kamloops Fire Centre issued a release urging the public to comply with the current camp-� re ban, which went into e� ect Aug. 1.

Over the past two weekends, conservation o� cers have issued sev-en violation tickets and 11 warnings to people not abiding by the rules, which include the pro-hibition of � reworks and burning barrels.

And despite count-less warnings of the ex-treme � re threat, it’s not uncommon to see drivers � icking cigarette butts out of their vehicle win-dows.

� ose who violate the current camp� re ban could be issued a $345 ticket for all people in at-tendance of the camp-� re. A $230 � ne could be dished out to any people

participating in lighting � reworks.

Reckless � re use could result in a � ne of up to $100,000 and/or one year in prison; anyone who is found to actual-ly cause a wild� re could be � ned up to $1 million and face up to three years in prison

Pepper said several ef-forts are being made to bring awareness to the public.

“We team up with lo-cal governments to help get that information out,” said Pepper, add-ing they’ve utilized so-cial media tools to help spread the message.

“We also have � re wardens who will go around and do patrols through each of the � re zones. � ey’ll have dif-ferent patrol routes and they’ll go and talk to campers about being safe in the backcountry.”

But despite the aware-ness campaigns every year, statistics indicate some people may not be

getting the message.“� at’s unfortunately

still the case.“We do think people

have the best of inten-tions. If you have your dirt bike in the back-country, maybe you don’t know there’s a spark go-ing o� the back…every situation is di� erent and complex.”

As of � ursday after-noon, Kamloops Fire Centre was dealing with 134 active � res.

“Our � re crews are very busy responding to those � res—some of them are in very remote areas.

“When we start diverting resour-ces to respond to (hu-man-caused) incidents, it causes a risk to pub-lic safety and to our � re-� ghters. � ey already have a lot of work to do as it is.”

What is a sealant? What are their advantages and disadvantages?

Normal pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars) can trap food that cannot be removed by brushing or be washed out by water or saliva. A

sealant is a tough, plastic material designed to bond to tooth enamel. These tooth-colored sealants are painted onto the tooth surface to “seal” the pits and grooves and protect against decay. They are generally applied to children’s � rst and second permanent molars. They can also be useful for adults in certain situations. Most children do not lose their baby molars until they are 12 years old. Sealants on baby molars are recommended if the child is at high risk for decay (e.g., history of previous cavities, sugary diet, exceptionally deep or stained grooves). What is kennel cough and how do I protect my dog from becoming affected?Kennel cough is a broad term covering any infectious or contagious condition of dogs where coughing is one of the major clinical signs. It is also referred to as infectious

It is often a mild disease, but the cough may be chronic, lasting for several weeks in some cases. Common clinical signs include a loud cough often describe as a “goose honk”, runny eyes and nose, swollen tonsils, wheezing, lack of appetite and depressed behavior. Most dogs with infectious tracheobronchitis will cough when the throat is rubbed or palpated. Often, the hacking cough caused by kennel cough will persist for several weeks after the infection. Most vaccination programs your veterinarian will recommend include adenovirus and parain� uenza. Bordetella vaccination is also highly recommended for dogs that are boarded, groomed or interact with other dogs in areas such as dog parks.

The term “camp-ing under the stars” now in-

spires a much bigger

meaning in my life fol-lowing last weekend’s amazing display by Mother Nature.

My dear friend Curtis and I share an annual tradition of escaping for the busy world for a night or two during the summer on a � shing trip.

Neither of us profess-es to actually being either skilled or fanatical � sh-ermen; however, both of us share a ginormous ad-miration and addiction to canoeing.

� e idea of sim-ply spending quiet time � oating about on a lake is the main draw be-hind disappearing from the crazy life for the � sh-ing trip.

Fish are not the focus —just the unnecessary justi� cation.

For the past three years or so, despite our e� orts with rod and reel, neither of us has had any success landing a lunker into our separate canoe.

� e adventures, though, have been totally marvellous, relaxing, and inspiring—not to men-tion a great reminder of the value of friendship.

Last Sunday after-noon, Curtis and I packed up the canoes,

camping gear, rods and other necessary � sh-ing/camping amenities (steak, beer, etc.) and ventured our way up to Island Lake above Win-� eld.

Island Lake is part of the famous and popular Dee Lake chain of lakes.

To the locals, it is a well known tuck-away spot ranked highly for its escape ability factor.

We were fortunate to � nd a wonderful spot at the forestry campsite for tents and campers at Is-land Lake and made it our base for the next two evenings.

As luck would have it, Sunday was surmised by totally unpredictable and ever changing weather—with rain showers and thunderstorms, mixed in with sunshine and clear

skies. � e increasing light-

ning (albeit far away at that point) drove us o� the lake from a dusk at-tempt at chasing the elu-sive Rainbow Trout, and we scampered back to camp just in time to avoid a brief downpour.

It was simply a warm-up for the show that Mother Nature was about to provide.

As even better fortune would have it, Curtis and I had unknowing-ly planned our trip at the same time as the peak period for viewing the annual Perseid meteor shower.

� e Perseid meteor shower has been ob-served for about 2,000 years and takes its name because the point from where the meteor showers appear to come (called a ‘radiant; by star know-it-alls like Curtis) is situated from within the constellation Persus.

According to Wikipedia, “the stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud and stretches along the orbit

of the comet Swift-Tut-tle. � e cloud con-sists of particles ejected by the comet as it trav-els on its 133-year or-bit. Most of the particles have been part of the cloud for around a thou-sand years.”

Regardless of the data —the next four or � ve hours of star gazing will never leave my brain.Like youngsters, Curtis and I sat � xated in our chairs; necks cranked un-comfortably backwards, and literally gazed up in the north sky as the most magical light show in the heavens took place.

� e forked lightning turned into a plethora of sheet lightning and lit-erally surrounding us in every compass direction, as the thunder began to roll in.

Despite the part-ly blocked sky due to clouds the star display from a campsite high up in the mountains away from the glow of city lights was truly spec-tacular. Perseid’s addi-tion literally “put it over the top.”

Before today’s electronic gadg-ets got in the way,

we were naturally much closer to nature.

As kids, we didn’t have a choice between going outside to play and play-ing indoors with a device that had programs that simulated the outdoors.

� ere’s no substitution for the real thing.

Yet today, we’ve em-braced the idea of amus-ing, educating and even babysitting our children with electronics instead of the real world.

� e results are going to be catastrophic unless we take action immedi-ately to introduce those youngsters to bugs and plants, birds and beasts, rocks and dirt, � sh and frogs.

Before the era of these plug-in toys, young en-gineers � rst got interest-ed by building dams in the mud, using the hose to provide the water it held back and learning how diversions would re-duce the stress on that dam. Heck, I did too, and I never went into engin-

eering.Young biologists � rst

got the itch by catch-ing bees in bottles and watching them live or die. It was a childhood pastime of mine too.

Early lessons in � sh biology came from cleaning the � sh we caught when we went out on the lake, and examining their stom-ach contents so we knew what to use on the end of the line next time.

Sunday drives showed us how the landscape changed in the Oka-nagan when we drove uphill, with grasslands replaced by pines, � rs, then spruce; mariposa lilies by columbines, lu-pines, and mountain heather—even as the air became crisper and cooler.

Everyday activities ac-tually taught us about nature and its cycles of life, without us realizing what we were learning.

But today, we must make an e� ort to drag our young people away from the television, com-puter, iPod and iPad, electronic games and sounds, to participate in the real world of watching spiders weav-ing their intricate webs, building muddy dams to break, picking wild-� owers to arrange, enjoying the song of the meadowlark, seeing a doe suckle her fawn, or a � sh laying its eggs in a gravel bed.

We need to re-con-nect a new generation to its roots.

And, that’s exact-ly what members of the Oceola Fish and Game Club plan to do on Sun-day, with the inaugural Community Youth Day, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the club’s Win� eld Creek Wildlife Habitat Pre-serve on Bottom Wood Lake Road.

Families are invit-

ed to come and enjoy a multi-faceted day experi-encing a variety of out-doors activities, from � y casting or tying � ies to learning about the ko-kanee’s life cycle; shoot-ing targets with a bow and arrow to a treas-

ure hunt searching for moose, elk and deer ant-lers along the pathways on the preserve.

Although those paths are not really suitable for strollers or for toddlers’ little feet, somewhat older youngsters will be introduced to birds such as grouse and pheas-ant, chickadee and junco as well as larger critters

such as bears and other wildlife species.

Organizer Sean Rich-ardson, the club’s youth director, says it’s import-ant that we raise the next generation to become stewards of the natur-al environment so that its future is assured.

Without introducing them to the issues, they won’t grow up to con-serve/steward the re-source, he reasons.

Club president Jared Wilkison says this is just the � rst event to be held by the club to help get kids engaged in outdoors activities so they begin to value nature. It is those

who are passionate about hunting and � shing who are also passionate about habitat conservation.

He’s hoping events such as this will provide opportunities for those in the community who might not otherwise be exposed to such outdoor experiences.

Because this is a na-ture preserve there are dangers such as stinging nettle which they will be warning youngsters about, and proper foot-wear, hats and sunscreen are important to bring.

Club volunteers will provide a barbecue lunch.

It’s a drop-in day,

with a variety of sta-tions where the young people can try their hand at using a bow and ar-row to shoot at targets, using one of the Nation-al Archery in the Schools program kits.

It is time again for the largest fundraising cam-paign for the animals of British Columbia.

� e Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk to end ani-mal cruelty will be held in communities around BC on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013.

In Kelowna, the event takes place at the north � eld of City Park.

“We are really try-ing to focus on the larger picture this year of cre-ating this movement to end animal cruelty,” said Suzanne Pugh, Kelowna SPCA branch manager.

“Many people feel that they have to have a dog to attend this event and that is not true. We encourage all animal lovers to be involved and raise money to help our local abused, abandoned and unwanted animals.”

� e B.C. SPCA is known to work with cats,

dogs and small animals but their mission reads: to protect and enhance the quality of life for do-mestic, farm and wild animals.

In fact, the organiza-tion runs a wildlife res-cue and rehabilitation centre outside of Vic-toria and focuses many of its advocacy cam-paigns on the welfare of

farm animals including a SPCA-certi� ed pro-gram.

Many local business-es are getting on board and raising money and awareness for this great cause.

Quality Greens Farm Markets in Penticton, West Kelowna, Kelow-na and Vernon are ac-cepting donations at the till the entire month of August.

“� e stores are selling dog treats with proceeds going to the B.C. SPCA or you can simple make a donation to support the animals,” said SPCA spokesperson Heather Harrison.

“Quality Greens has been a huge support-er of the B.C. SPCA for many years raising tens of thousands of dollars for our local animals, we thank Lisa and her team so much for their dedica-tion and commitment.”

London Drugs has also begun a regional campaign including their stores in Penticton, West Kelowna, Kelowna, Ver-non and Kamloops.

“We are so thrilled to have the support of Lon-don Drugs again this year,” said Harrison.

Make a minimum of a $5 donation at the till and they will enter you in a draw to win a buggy full of products.

� e Kelowna walk at City Park will include a three and one kilometre walks, many fun dog games, a BBQ, 50/50 and live entertainment.

For more than 11 years, the Cen-tral Okanagan Hospice Associ-ation has, through the hard work of a committee of volunteers, held their very successful annual linen and china sale, bringing in over $50,000 along the way.

For more than 11 years, the Cen-tral Okanagan Hospice Associ-ation has, through the hard work of a committee of volunteers, held their very successful annual linen and china sale, bringing in over $50,000 along the way.

� is year’s event—scheduled for

Saturday, Sept. 21—is being held in a new location; the Italian Centre at 770 Lawrence Avenue.

In addition, thanks to the support of Kelowna’s historic Bernard-Law-rence neighbourhood, a tour of some lovely heritage homes has been add-ed.

Attendees may also chose to have tea and goodies while browsing to � nd that perfect heirloom piece.

� is year’s event will enable everyone to participate in the day long sale which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

� e tours will be o� ered between

10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with tea being served at 2 p.m.

At the present time, COHA is accepting very gently used, clean heirloom pieces of linen, crystal, sil-ver and china.

� e o� ce is open to accept dona-tion from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday

to � ursday. To obtain further information

HUME, MARTIN ALEXANDERAPRIL 23,1959 ~ AUGUST 16, 2013

We are saying good-bye to you Martin, and we will seeyou later. Martin will be missed dearly by his mother, Rena,

daughter, Krista, his wife, Colleen and son, Harley and his granddaughters; Kitnana and Phoenix.

Martin was a loving man and good friend to his neighbors and always helpful whenever possible. He attended church

at Lake Country Centre and is in the arms of Jesus and loving father and sister. There will be a memorial service

for Martin, on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 2pm to Celebrate his Life, at Lake Country Life Centre 3110 Berry Rd, Lake Country, BC. Refreshments will be served after.

WILFRED LAWRENCE MERRILL LEVERE

It is with great sadness and sense of loss that the family of Wilf

Levere announce his passing on August 12, 2013. Wilf born April 26, 1929 came out west

from Ontario to Calgary in 1953. He worked in the construction

fi eld until his retirement to Winfi eld in 1989. Wilf enjoyed his retirement fi shing, picking

apples, cutting wood, gardening and spending time with family.

Wilf will be forever missed by his two sons Jeff (Suzy), Randy (Tara) and two grandchildren Jenna & Justin who were the light of his life. Survived by two half brothers

Norm(Ann), Gary, three sister-in-laws Laura, Nedra and Evie Lawless, extended family and good friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend Dena of 58 years, his parents Lawrence and Catherine Levere,

and sister Geraldine Croft. It was Wilf’s wish that there be no funeral or memorial service. And ask that those whose lives he touched remember him in your own special way. Wilf will always be remembered for his kind, caring ways

and cheerful smile. He will be missed forever after.

CHARLES DESMOND CHAMPION-TAYLORCharles Desmond

Champion-Taylor was born January 30, 1932

in Canora Saskatchewan. Des died unexpectedly on August 4, 2013 at Lake Country Lodge, Lake Country, B.C.

Des was the youngest of six children born to

Edward and Carrie Mae Champion-Taylor. He graduated from SAIT in 1965 as a professional cook. He worked in his fi eld initially on the Columbia River dam project in Castlegar, and then later

for many years with the provincial government at the Willingdon Correctional Center.

He married Pamela Mills in 1969 and they enjoyed many wonderful years together until her passing in 2005. They resided in Fort Langley for many years prior to moving

to Winfi eld (Lake Country). Des was a self taught woodworker. His passion in woodworking evolved over

several years as he built his home in Fort Langley,and following that, built and gifted many fi ne pieces

of furniture and cabinets.He was a poet and some of his poems were published. Des had a quick wit and was agreat story teller.He always had a joke or two to share and laugh over when socializing. His sense of humor

was with him always. Des was predeceased by his parents Edward and Carrie Mae Champion-Taylor, his brothers

Jack, Bruce, and Albert, and sister Edna (Edie), his beloved wife Pam, nephews Wesley and Gary; his in-laws Leo and Vera Mills, and Pam’s twin brother Pat as well as

his cherished dog Chop Suey. Des cherished family and is lovingly remembered by his sister Pat Milino, nieces and nephews: Sandy, Lonny, Faye, Jacen, Donalie, Brian, Judy, Brent, Kerry, Cathy,

David, Ron, Karen and Robin and their families. A graveside service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetary,

1468 66th. Avenue in Grand Forks, B.C. on August 22, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of fl owers donations may be made to any of the following of Des’ favorite charities:

The District of Lake Country is seeking volunteer members to serve on the Access & Age-friendly Committee and Parks and Recreation Committee. Do you, or anyone you know, have an interest in identifying and suggesting solutions to gaps and barriers that impede full participation in all aspects of life in the District? Would you like to provide recommendations to Council on issues pertaining to enhancing access to District services for people of all ages and with all types of abilities? What about advising Council on issues pertaining to parks, recreation leisure services and culture; or providing recommendations on the development of parks, recreation facilities and trails that will benefit the community? Transit service through Lake Country

Southbound: Regular routing via Highway 97 then Pelmewash Parkway off-ramp, Pelmewash Parkway, Oyama Road, Greenhow Road, Young Road, Trask Road, Oyama Road, Pelmewash Parkway, Highway 97, Berry Road, Highway 97 to regular routing.

Northbound: Regular routing via Highway 97, Berry Road, Highway 97 then Pelmewash Parkway off-ramp, Pelmewash Parkway, Oyama Road, Greenhow Road, Young Road, Trask Road, Oyama Road, Pelmewash Parkway, Highway 97 on-ramp, Highway 97 to regular routing.

Note that the #90 UBCO Connector will continue to serve Berry Road Exchange until September 3rd.

Effective September 3, 2013 the #90 UBCO Connector will not be routing into Berry Road Exchange and will instead bypass the exchange and service the stops on Highway 97 at Beaver Lake Road northbound and at Hill Road southbound. This change is taking place as a pre-emptive measure to accommodate the expected increase in running time to service Oyama with the introduction of the new highway.

Operating the service this way will allow BC Transit the opportunity to review and monitor impacts the new highway has on the service reliability of the #90. This will also allow BC Transit to field test potential routing options and discuss these options with stakeholders. A decision on the permanent routing will be made in the near future.

After the new Hwy 97 alignment opening August 16th, the #90 UBCO Connector continues to operate status quo in both directions via Pelmewash Parkway until further analysis can be made on the impacts of the new highway. Therefore, the routing will be as shown on the map below.

The District of Lake Country has some fantastic advertising opportunities waiting for area businesses to take advantage of while helping get local kids more involved in playing sports. Through the District’s arena rink board advertising sales program 20% of gross proceeds go to Lake Country Kidsport!

Advertising opportunities include standard rink board, wall board signs, score clock advertising and on Olympia (Zamboni). Annual advertising rates range from $700 to $1200 with discounts available for multi-year agreements.
