Classic before and after shots: Happy go lucky, if cele-brating ‘boxing day’ a little long into the season, Steve and Deb Jarvis, with computer head David Tenborg (left photo, from left to right), wait as the countdown for the Lake Coun-try New Years Day Polar Bear swim draws near.
Hardy folk trampled down about a foot of snow in a -8 C north wind waiting for the go sign.
Despite the ice starting to form at the edge of the water,
about 50 people took the plunge in New Years Day in Lake Country.
One young man was from Australia and said it was +40 C in Sydney.
Soup, sandwiches with hot chocolate and co ee awaited everyone at the Oyama Legion after the swim.
Monies collected went to bene t the children’s hospital.

A Carr’s Landing cherry farmer will im-plement a pilot project to look at environment-ally-friendly pest control
options for B.C. berry farmers under a prov-incial government pro-gram.
Coral Beach Farms
Inc. received a $12,700 grant to pilot test tech-nology in B.C. orchards that can potentially of-fer a more e ective, en-
vironmentally friend-ly pest-bird control op-tion to cherry, grape and berry growers.
 e Lake Coun-
try-based cherry grow-er will test a system that could be an ideal option for berry growers if it proves successful.
e grant comes from the government’s of Canada and British Col-umbia’s commitment under the Growing For-
ward 2 agreement to provide up to $13.4 mil-lion between 2013 and 2018 through the Can-ada-B.C. Agri-Innova-tion Program.
So far, 95 projects have shared almost $8 million in funding. Money is still available to support the commercial-ization and adoption of innovation projects that bene t individual enter-prises and the B.C. agri-culture and agri-foods sector as a whole.
British Columbia’s agrifood industry is re-ceiving about $900,000 for 16 new projects that support a broad range of innovative products, practices and technolo-gies of direct bene t to the sector.
Along with the Coral Beach pest control pro-ject, other projects in-clude:
• e development of sushi quinoa—a type of quinoa with a sticky con-sistency to supply the sushi market with an al-ternative to rice
• Testing a foliar spray to help reduce premature fruit drop and increase blueberry yields
• Monitoring patho-gens in cherry orchards and storage facilities with wireless technol-ogy that will help B.C. cherry growers become more competitive for the Asian markets
• Building on an ear-lier innovation-fund-ed project that focused on the development and marketing of a cloud-based food safety pro-gram.
“ e British Colum-bia agriculture industry is always looking for new ways to remain competi-tive. With this funding support, the projects will bene t the entire sec-tor while assisting them in earning more dollars,” said Norm Letnick, Ke-lowna-Lake Country MLA and B.C.’s minis-ter of agriculture.
Growing Forward 2 is a ve-year agreement launched in 2013 that provides a $3-billion, federal-provincial-ter-ritorial government in-vestment in innova-tion, competitiveness and market development.
e Canada-B.C. Agri-Innovation Pro-gram is administered by the Investment Agricul-ture Foundation of B.C. Additional information and application forms are available at: http://iafbc.ca/funding-oppor-tunities/innovation/.

It was originally in-stalled in 1966 in St. Margaret’s Anglican Church in Win eld. e church had to be decom-missioned and destroyed to make way for High-way 97 to be built.

But that changed Oct. 19 when Liberal Ste-phen Fuhr not only top-pled the popular long-time Tory incumbent Ron Cannan, he also wrestled away a riding that had sent Conserv-ative, Reform and Can-adian Alliance MPs to Ottawa in every election since 1968.
at was the last time a federal Liber-al won here, largely on the strength of what was known then as “Tru-deaumania,” a national love a air with then Lib-eral leader Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
In October, the coun-try experienced a more subdued, modern ver-sion of Trudeaumania, as his son Justin, follow-ing in his famous father’s footsteps, led the Liber-als back to the political promised land after 10 years in the wilderness, much of it languishing as the third-place party in Parliament.
Locally, Tory blue was replaced with Liberal red as voters here joined the rolling “red tide” that swept across Canada on
election night as voters made their marks.
But the local cam-paign that resulted in Fuhr’s historic win was not con ned to the mammoth 11-week per-iod between when for-mer Prime Minister Stephen Harper made his short walk to Ri-deau Hall from his Sus-sex Drive home in Ot-tawa to have the gov-ernor-general drop the election writ and elec-tion night.
For Fuhr, a divorced 46-year-old father of a 16-year-old son and a decorated, retired RCAF ghter pilot, the bid to win a seat in Canada’s Parliament stretched back a lot farther.
He was one of the rst Liberal nominated can-didates across the coun-try. at was in June
2014, nearly a year and a half before the election.
“I knew people would not be thinking about
the election that far out, so I set out to develop re-lationships within the party rst,” said Fuhr.
As the new MP sees it, politics, like so much in life, is based on rela-tionships with others.
It was a strategy that has already paid o in the early days of his new job, getting him in the door to meet with the men and women of his party who are now cab-inet ministers.
When he was a mem-ber of the Canadian Air Force, Fuhr admits he supported the Conserva-tives, based largely on his view then that the Tories were the best option for supporting the military and its members.
But he grew increas-ingly disillusioned with
that party over issues such as the govern-ment’s ill-fated plan to replace the RCAF’s CF-18 ghter planes and its treatment of veterans.
Fuhr said while he knew from his own ex-perience that the plane chosen to replace the CF-18 was not the right one, he was astonished to see Harper’s Conserv-ative government stub-bornly refuse to recon-sider the plan.
“If they could get
this so wrong, what else could they get wrong?” he asked himself.
at issue, along with the deteriorating rela-tionship with Canadian veterans over the gov-ernment’s treatment of former members of the Armed Forces pushed him towards a run for political o ce and a bid for the Liberal nomina-tion here.

nitely variable pat-terns of water crystals fall from the sky, the weight of each one almost too small to measure… Yet together they can bring 200-horsepower cars to a standstill, break branch-es o trees, collapse roofs and warehouses.
If they’re so light, I wonder, why do my mus-cles hurt so much after shovelling my driveway?
Snow akes are a les-son in cumulative e ects. A single action may have imperceptible impact; an accumulation of individ-ual actions can change history.
Individual protests against the Vietnam war carried little weight; a million protesters in Washington broke an administration.
One black woman re-fused to give up her seat on a bus; millions of marchers took up her cause and toppled dis-criminatory laws.
One man died on a cross for daring to live di erently; two billion followers today shape the world’s ethics.
If there are miracles in this world, the water that snow akes are made of must be one of them. e miracle is not that Jesus walked on water. e miracle is the water he walked on.
Water consists of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen—one of the strongest chemical bonds known. No other chemicals can split its components apart. Yet water is utter-ly unlike its component elements. Hydrogen is
highly ammable—re-member the Hinden-berg? Oxygen ignites anything. Yet water dis-proves that argument that the whole is the sum of its components. Water is the exact opposite of its components—it ex-tinguishes ames.
Water is paradoxical. We cannot live without it. Sometimes, we cannot live with it. Few things are more destructive than a ood. If ocean levels rise, the most valuable real estate on earth will re-enact Atlantis.
Maybe all miracles are also paradoxes.
Water is the closest thing we have to a uni-versal solvent. We ush it through our industries, our kitchen sinks, our toilets. When epidemics strike, we wash bacteria o our hands.
Yet bacteria originated in water. Without water, life itself would not have been possible. When we search for life in space, we search for evidence of water.
Water may be the ul-timate miracle.
I try to remember that as more snow akes start drifting down out of the sky.

There are common arguments some insur-ance adjusters make that are so lacking in logic, science and law that I consider them an at-tempt at cheating.
is one has to do with a willful blind-ness to the scienti c re-ality that a percentage of those su ering soft tissue injuries in crashes will never fully recover from their injuries.
I say “willful blind-ness” because even orthopaedic surgeons, the medical specialty fa-voured by ICBC to pro-vide “independent” opin-ions against injured vic-tims, will agree with that scienti c reality when cross examined.
is scienti c reality is never shared with you. Instead, it is assumed that you will fully re-cover, which is thankful-ly the reality for a much higher percentage of in-jury victims. at as-sumption is bolstered by optimism expressed by your medical doctor and others on your medic-al team.
Optimism is an im-portant medical tool. e mind is a powerful heal-er. e more optimistic you are about your own recovery, the more like-ly your optimism will be borne out. I am certainly not saying that your in-
juries and the symptoms you are feeling are “just in your head”. No, they are very real. ere is an established scienti c interrelation, though, be-tween the psychological and the physical.
If the optimism is not borne out, though, it is unfair and hurtful to say: “You should be better by now”. You absolutely wish that you were better by now. Certainly, the in-attentive driver “should” not have crashed into the back of your vehicle. ere’s no concept, though that you “should” be better by now when you clearly are not.
By not enjoying a complete recovery, you have joined the unfortu-nate minority statis-tic of those for whom an inattentive driver has permanently harmed.
It is also unfair to point to other occupants of the same vehicle, who
joined the majority of crash victims in enjoy-ing a complete recovery, as an indication that you should not still be hav-ing symptoms. at’s as nonsense and hurtful as telling anyone contract-ing a disease that a icts a minority of people that it’s somehow their fault for joining that unlucky minority.
You are dealing with a bodily injury claims ad-juster who, you believe, has expertise in this stu . He or she is a represent-ative of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, a crown cor-poration, which you have paid insurance premiums to year after year. at inherent credibility caus-es those words to sow seeds of doubt in your mind about your entitle-ment to fair, nancial compensation for your injuries and losses.
“Maybe there is some-thing wrong with me that I haven’t recovered,” “Maybe there was some-thing more that I could have done which would have led to my recovery.”
ose seeds of doubt help the claims adjuster to convince you to accept a level of compensation that is far below what is fair. It is a level of un-fairness that I call cheat-ing and it is every bit as distasteful in my view
as those pathetic worms who try to cheat the in-surance company.
When is it time to ‘lawyer up?’
‘Lawyering up’ can change the injury claim process.
Is it cheating for an insurance adjuster to mislead you, or is decep-tion fair game in a nego-tiation?
is is the third in a series of columns dedi-cated to the exposure of insurance adjuster de-ception.
is time, my focus is on the arti cial nature of the negotiation of a per-sonal injury settlement and the misleading ad-vice some adjusters give about the consequences of not making a deal.
An inattentive driv-er causes you injuries and losses.
Our civil justice sys-tem gives you the “claim” or “right of action” against that driver for fair, nancial compen-sation for those injuries and losses.
It is the claim that is negotiated with an ad-juster who works for the inattentive driver’s liabil-ity insurance company.
e adjuster will often make the rst o er. You want nothing more than to be treated fairly.
Negotiations, gener-
ally, are uncomfortable for you.
Your discomfort is compounded by your complete lack of famili-arity with this claim thing and what settle-ment amount might be fair.
Many people have told you not to accept the insurance company’s rst o er. You follow that advice and reject it.
e adjuster will ask you how much compen-sation you think is fair. Of course, you don’t have a clue.
You fear being per-ceived as greedy if you respond with too high a number.
I’ve written before about negotiating the purchase of a beauti-ful stone carved chess set while vacationing in Mexico.
I had no idea what it was worth. I didn’t want to seem greedy or in-sulting by o ering too little in response to the $200 price-tag, but I also didn’t want to be ripped o .
I ended up being ripped o !
e reality is that it doesn’t really matter what number you give the adjuster.
e adjuster is work-ing within a xed “au-thority” of compensa-tion he or she is permit-
ted to o er. If you have reached
a plateau in your symp-toms after follow-ing every medical rec-ommendation avail-able to you, such that your symptoms are like-ly to continue inde n-itely, that “authority” will never come close to fair compensation.
Yes, the o er will in-crease.
at “don’t accept their rst o er” ad-vice will turn out to be good advice. Perhaps a bit of back and forth will ensue.
On reaching that au-thority, the adjuster will be rm that it is all the compensation he or she can or will o er.
Often, your choice will be described as one between settling your case at that amount or going to trial.
I have also heard of some adjusters say-ing that if you choose to “lawyer up,” that of-fer will be o the table, insinuating that their settlement position might go down.
Not having any idea that the o er is com-pletely outside the ball-park of fair and fearful of a trial, you are likely to accept the o er.
e truth is that the adjuster you are dealing
with is only the start of the negotiation.
“Lawyering up” auto-matically results in a new adjuster being appointed and a completely di er-ent “authority” process.
Another truth is that trials are required in only a very small percentage of personal injury claims.
It’s absolutely not a choice of “accept this or go to trial.”
e true choice is to “accept this or hire a law-yer and the negotiation will continue”.
A trial is necessary only if, after a prolonged, further negotiation, the much higher new level of authority is so far below what is fair that you decide to go through the process in order to achieve justice.
is column is intended to provide general in-formation about injury claims. It is not a substi-tute for retaining a law-yer to provide legal advice speci cally pertaining to your case.

Lessons from a few snow akesSnow fell heavily
Saturday night. By Sunday morning,
25 cm (for metric de-niers, 10 inches) covered the ground.
I shouldn’t say that snow fell heavily. Snow can’t fall heavily. Each snow ake weighs next to nothing. Snow is, in fact, frozen air. What we call humidity, the in-visible water vapour in the air, freezes. And sifts down. Sometimes gent-ly. Sometimes viciously,
as tiny needles of ice in a blizzard.

We want to hear your
opinions on issues going
on in our communityI rst met Stephen
Harper when he was running for
the Canadian Alliance leadership in 2002.
Speaking to a group of Fraser Valley mem-bers concerned that the party had split over the leadership of Stockwell Day, Harper didn’t mince words because a local re-porter had showed up on a Saturday morning. He explained his prediction that no matter who leads the conservative move-ment started by Pres-ton Manning, the na-tional media would work against it.
“ e press is owned by big-L liberals and sta ed by small-L liberals,” Harper said. “Preston was too cerebral; Stock was not cerebral enough. I’m not sure where I will be, but the media will al-ways be on the other side.”
Harper’s cold war with national media is a theme that runs through his decade as prime min-ister, peaking in 2015 with the most slant-ed election coverage I’ve
ever witnessed. e cele-bration continues over Justin Trudeau’s vic-tory, with the suppos-edly non-partisan feder-al bureaucracy cheering along with much of the national media.
Harper’s assessment of major newspaper ownership is no long-er accurate, except for the Toronto Star. But the dying tradition of owners looking up from their accounting ledg-ers to endorse a polit-ical party continued, with the Postmedia chain and the Globe and Mail pointing out that Trudeau’s rash promises didn’t add up.
Endorsements were a brief interruption in the media assault on Harp-er’s record. His gov-ernment’s plan to wel-come 10,000 refugees, unveiled way back in January 2015, was por-trayed as heartless and feeble, while Trudeau’s 25,000 by Christmas represented the gener-ous character of the true Canada.
As it turns out, the Liberals were hard pressed to reach even the 10,000 mark. But they’ve put out a rash new prom-ise to make it 50,000 at some point in the fu-ture, so the media’s new-found message of sun-shine, hope and change continues.
ose modest $10 bil-lion annual de cits that Trudeau promised, and Harper warned against? Borrowing and spending will far exceed that, but we’re assured that’s be-cause they were based on in ated Conservative -nancial forecasts.
In fact, independent private sector forecasts are now the key reference
for government budgets at the federal and provin-cial level. None of them predicted the further slump in energy prices that continued through 2015.
And cooking the books before an election isn’t really possible any more, thanks to the es-tablishment of the Par-liamentary Budget Of- ce. at was a Harp-er innovation, along with scheduled elections.
And that Trudeau pledge to raise taxes on the wealthiest Canadians and use the proceeds to nance a tax cut for the middle class? at one didn’t add up either. For one thing, wealthy people have a variety of legal ways to reduce their taxable income.
Here’s an actual front-page headline from the Globe and Mail, re-porting this unfortunate fact, well after the elec-tion: “ e way Liberals gauged response to new tax rate explains gap.” So it was just an under-standable oversight, you see.
Trudeau’s star turn in Paris, where he pro-nounced that “Can-ada is back” in the bat-tle to control the world’s weather? e o cial submission from his bloated delegation to the UN climate meet-ings was actually the ex-isting Conservative plan, which includes phasing out coal- red electricity generation.
Harper generally represented a preference for the individual over the state, a concept that at one time was known as “liberalism.” is was illustrated by his prefer-ence for parents rather than a nanny state to ad-minister child care.
He advocated free trade, small government and low taxes. We’ll see how that legacy survives the new government and its media cheering sec-tion.

This big boy’s name is Norm - fitting don’t you think! His previous guardian only had him for a short time, but decided to have us find him a new, more suitable home. He loves children and is very good with them, but again, if you are considering adopting Norm and have children in your life, we strongly recommend you bring them to the Shelter to meet Norm BEFORE making that adoption commitment. Norm is a typical hound whereas they tend to howl and bay when left alone for longer periods of time and they like to sing along with fire trucks and police cars. Because hounds are driven by their nose to track small animals, Norm’s new guardians should have a secure fence to keep him from roaming. The hound breed is a sensitive one and will need patience and positive reinforcement, and the treat or two or else they will shut down..love and patience always wins out in the end. If you believe you have the right home for Norm, we encourage you to ask the Kelowna SPCA Staff to meet him.

from the RCAF, he had worked as a private pilot for a wealthy Egyptian businessman and ran an Okanagan-based busi-ness that made aviation equipment.
With the Liber-al nomination in hand, Fuhr tabbed well-known local political rainmaker Wayne Pierce as his campaign manager.
Pierce had just come o managing rook-ie Kelowna Mayor Co-lin Basran’s successful civic election campaign and he also helped get former Kelowna may-or Walter Gray elected for his “comeback” term in 2011.
But when Fuhr rst asked Pierce to come on board, Pierce was reluc-tant. In their rst meet-ing, Pierce was blunt in his assessment of Fuhr’s chances.
“He pulled out his binder, leafed through
the pages and told me I couldn’t beat (inclubent Conservative) Ron (Cannan),” remembered Fuhr.
Cannan, a likeable guy with a lengthy his-tory in the riding, was considered a popular, hard-working constitu-ency MP running for a party with a lock on the riding.
A 10-year MP, he pre-ceded his time in Ot-tawa by serving several terms as a Kelowna city councillor. If the Con-servatives were popular here, Cannan was even more so.
But Fuhr won Pierce over.
His new campaign manager, however, had one condition—the tar-get of the Liberal cam-paign would be Harper, not Cannan.
e strategy worked. But as Pierce put it
later, for the plan to suc-ceed Cannan had to go to.
Tapping into the an-ti-Harper sentiment sweeping across the country while also fend-ing o at times the growing popularity of the NDP, Fuhr raised a few eyebrows at the last all-candidates meet-ing when he bluntly told the audience the NDP would not form the next federal government, de-spite leading in the polls at times during the cam-paign. On election night, Fuhr won the riding by 4,000 votes.
But while quick to ac-knowledge the advantage
the anti-Harper senti-ment gave his campaign, he also believes the win was not solely a protest vote.
“ ere are 99 ridings across the country where Conservatives were elected or re-elected, and that’s a good sized Op-position,” he said. “So there is still support out there.”
But in his mind, going forward Kelowna-Lake Country is both Tory
blue and Liberal red. He sees his win as a
change for the riding, a change where there will likely be a real choice for voters in future.
And that, he add-ed, will likely only get stronger as the riding’s demographics continue to change with more new people arriving and the area continuing to grow.
Once in o ce, Fuhr, like his predecessors, had to set up an o ce—two, in fact—and do so quickly.
One in Ottawa and one here. And like his predecessors, he found the budget to do that needed to be stretched as far as it would go.
He has now opened an o ce at 1420 St. Paul St. in downtown Kelow-na but is still waiting for telephone and Internet service.
For the time being, he can be reached through his parliamentary e-mail
address: [email protected].
at address is being monitored by his sta at the Ottawa o ce who will forward inquiries.
Fuhr has hired the two people who ran Cannan’s Kelowna and Ottawa o ces to do the same jobs for him in both cities, saying their knowledge, continuity, expertise and non-parti-san approach are invalu-able.
Fuhr was passed over for a cabinet post as there was plenty of competition for the ob-vious military-relat-ed portfolios he may have been considered for with a former gener-al and a much-decorat-ed “war hero” (Canada’s new defence minister) also elected as new Lib-eral MPs.
While Fuhr has made no secret of the fact he would like to have min-isterial duties one day, for now he sees his role as
a back-bench MP as an advantage to focusing all his attention on the rid-ing and the constituents he now represents.
After being sworn in in early November, Fuhr hit the ground running, immediately meeting with the new veterans af-fairs minister to discuss the re-opening of a vet-erans a airs o ce here.
He said he plans to follow the same schedule as his predecessor, while Parliament is in session, ying east to Ottawa on Sunday and returning ursday so he can meet with constituents.
“I recognize that as the MP, I repre-sent everyone in Ke-lowna-Lake Country, whether they voted for me or not,”Fuhr said.
“It’s an enormous responsibility…one I take very seriously.”
KATHY MICHAELS
Ron Cannan’s fed-eral election riding loss at the polls Oct. 19 may have been one of the big-gest political upsets Ke-lowna-Lake Country has ever had.
In addition to the simple fact it’s di cult to nd anyone with an un-kind word about Can-nan, he was running in a region that has been voting in Conservative governments of varying stripes since Pierre Tru-deau was prime minister.
For many, his con-tinual re-election was viewed as a reality of Central Okanagan life.
When he lost to Lib-eral opponent Stephen Fuhr, however, that real-ity shifted, and it’s some-thing Cannan has been gracious about.
“From going full speed to having no iPad or Blackberry or any-thing—that was a real shock to the system…but that’s just democ-racy,” Cannan said.
“It’s been a privilege and an honour to serve this community (in fed-eral politics) for 10 years, and nine years before that on [Kelowna] city council. It’s a fantastic
community and I look forward to continue be-ing a part of it.”
For those who have been to any commun-ity events in the months
since the federal election, it’s clear he means it.
Whether it’s pour-ing co ee at the Gospel Mission’s annual Christ-mas dinner or show-
ing up unexpectedly to sit through some of the city’s budget talks, Can-nan is still very much a part of this community.
“My wife and I were
talking about this last night,” he said. “I am not going to stop being who I am. I am part of the community. I appreci-ate the opportunities I’ve
been given to give back.”And, he sees it lead-
ing to new career possi-bilities.
“I was just chatting with the former [Kelow-na] mayor Walter Gray and his wife, and we were talking about the federal money that’s available for infrastructure and water,” he said.
e aim has been for something to come about that would see a bit of uniformity in the way Kelowna’s water is managed.
Currently, there are ve water purveyors in Kelowna, and they provide water to area residents through vary-ing means.
A provincial call for some cohesion among purveyors has yet to be answered, and Cannan is considering entering the fray as a mediator so for-ward momentum can be gained.
“ e ultimate goal is to come up with the best water provider for Ke-lowna residents,” he said, noting that a master plan has been discussed for some time.
e elephant in the room is governance, and Cannan believes that he can do the consensus
building needed to move forward on that point.
“Water is the most valuable resource, and we need to ensure it’s man-aged as e ciently as pos-sible so we have a good long-term sustainable supply,” he said, adding that most irrigation dis-tricts in the region have a good water management reputation.
In addition to new ca-reer opportunities, Can-nan said he’s looking forward to seeing deals made in previous years pay o , regardless of who’s the MP.
Among the list of pro-jects he’s awaiting are Highway 97’s widening from Edwards Road to Costco, the John Hin-dle Drive to Highway 97 and the downtown Ke-lowna innovation centre.
“I’m passionate about all these things,” he said.
Although Cannan has stepped out of the federal arena of pol-itics, Conservatives still have an Okanagan pres-ence with the re-election of Dan Albas as MP for the new riding of Cen-tral Okanagan-Sim-ilkameen-Nicola.

Police urge every-one to secure their vehi-cles following a rash of break-ins in Lake Coun-try during the holidays.
ree di erent break-ins on the same day were the result of vehicles not being locked. In each case valuables or garage door openers were left in the unlocked vehicles.
On Dec. 29, at 9:09 a.m., the Lake Coun-try RCMP responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle parked in the 9800 block of So-
nata Road. Investigators have determined that the vehicle had been left un-locked by its owner. e suspect located a gar-age door opener inside the vehicle and subse-quently gained entry into the victim’s garage where they stole shing gear and tools valued at over $2,000.
A short time later po-lice received a second complaint of a similar in-cident which occurred in the 9700 block of San-tina Road. e suspect in
this incident entered an-other vehicle which had also been left unlocked overnight. e suspect reportedly stole an iPod, a set of head phones, and a cellular phone from in-side.
A third incident was reported to police, this time in the 11000 block of Jackson Court. Once again the suspect entered an unlocked vehicle and stole loose change. An-other garage door open-er was left in this vehicle, however police did not
nd any evidence to sug-gest that the garage had been opened or entered by the suspect.
“ e part that is most disconcerting to me is that registered owners are leaving their vehi-cles unlocked, along with their garage door open-ers inside,” said Con-st. Katrina Claypool of Lake Country RCMP, “doing so allows the sus-pect to access the victim’s garage where they could potentially steal even more valuable property.”
“Police would also like to suggest that the public consider going as far as disabling their automatic overhead garage doors when they are home, as some newer model ve-hicles with the garage door opener built in can sometimes be used when the vehicle is turned o ,” added Const. Jesse O’Donaghey Kelowna RCMP media relations.
Lake Country RCMP ask residents to be vigi-lant and report any sus-picious activity to police at 250-766-2288 or call 911 if it’s an emergency.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat question would
you like a qualified professional to answer?
I’m always a little nervous when friends pop the cork off of a champagne bottle on New Years Eve - is this reasonable?
Concerns about champagne corks have been bred into optometrists since the
beginning of time (or at least the beginning of our profession). Almost every professor in every optometry school will regale their students with tales about how they knew a guy who knew a guy who suffered a cork injury to the eye. While these injuries are exceedingly rare, the damage that can and has been done is admittedly devastating. Corks leave a champagne bottle at nearly 50 mph and are the perfect size to t nicely into our eye sockets. Projectiles hitting the eye at this speed will almost certainly result in irreparable retinal damage and vision loss. Armed with this knowledge, my hope is that your resolution this year will be to make sure you cover your corks in tea towels before popping the bubbly. Have a Happy New Year!

Hearing Loss - What is it?
(Part ||) Sensorineural Hearing Loss occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or hearing nerve in the brain. Some of the important causes of sensorineural hearing loss are:
• Hearing loss caused by excessive exposure to loud noise• Viral or bacterial infections• Medications such as aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamycin,
streptomycin, erythromycin and vancomycin), ASA, and certain drugs given for the treatment of cancer (cisplatinum)
• Meniere’s Disease - an inner ear disorder which produces uctuating hearing loss, periods/attacks of vertigo, full feeling in the ears and tinnitus (subjective sounds in the ears)
• Aging - gradual age-related hearing loss called presbycusis and affects 30% of persons over the age of 65.
• Acoustic Neuroma (also called vestibular schwannoma) - is a tumor which is located between the ear and the brain and which usually affects balance as well as hearing. Acoustic neuroma’s affect about 1 in every 100,000 Canadians. In 95% of cases the tumor affects only 1 ear and in 5% of cases the problem is linked to an inherited syndrome called neuro bromatosis Type 2. Sensorineural hearing loss is typically a permanent type of hearing loss that usually can be helped with a hearing aid or other type of assistive listening device.

$500,000 price mark. Buyers of homes priced under $500,000 Canadian dollars can continue to make a minimum down payment of 5% of the purchase price, this rule remains unchanged. The new change affects homes priced over $500,000 in that the down payment required has increased to 10% of the price portion above the $500,000 benchmark.
This change to the down-payment rules comes into effect on February 15, 2016. I believe that this rule change will increase the activity for both buyers and sellers who would normally wait to sell or purchase a home in the Spring so that they can make a smaller down-payment on homes purchased for over $500,000. The long term impact of this change is expected to save real estate consumers money while also allowing home owners to build more equity in ther homes. For more information on how this change could impact your home purchase or sale, I look forward to hearing from you!

My niece is obsessed with having whiter teeth. She has tried every over the counter product in the drug stores, and had her teeth lasered apparently to make them brighter. I noticed the other night at dinner that she was holding her mouth after eating some cold dessert, and it sure looked like an ice cream headache. Do you think she has damaged her teeth?
Whitening has a place in dentistry, and like just about anything else it is entirely possible to go overboard on the idea. New patients show up at the front desk wanting their teeth whitened. Some are what has been referred to as 'whitening addicts'. Most want it in an hour as the advertising has certainly worked on them. Almost universally their focus is on whiter teeth, not necessarily healthier teeth. We have numerous options. All of them have a prerequisite – which is clean teeth. It sounds like a foregone conclusion, but some will request whitening and not want to bother having their teeth cleaned properly! If there is a layer of plaque coating the teeth, no whitening procedure will work as planned.
Another issue is just 'how white' you want your teeth. We've heard it termed 'Liberace white' which is brighter than gleaming. Dentists have shade charts to match colours on crowns and partials, and many factors such as natural staining of teeth, age, etc. come into play when choosing a preferred colour.
Often patients who are having unrelated cosmetic work completed may choose to whiten their existing teeth and then match up the shade of their new dental work to match their 'new' appearance. You mentioned that your niece appeared to have sensitive teeth if she was grimacing when eating something cold. This isn't unusual, and the severity or duration will be certainly affected by the quantity of bleaching solution applied. Options vary from retail whitening 'kits', to in office bleaching trays with clinically certified gel which must be applied by dental professionals, to take home trays of clinical gel, to the popularized 'Zoom!' whitening that has received much media attention recently. It is frequently advertised as 'one hour whitening' which is possible depending on how many shades are desired. As with any procedure, fees are all over the map. Some systems advocate bypassing the dentist and using 'whitening pens' to do it yourself. We suggest caution. Some systems sold through non dental sources have been found to use abnormally high levels of bleach which may cause burning of the mouth or gums. Some promises made can never be realized because of decades of staining from tobacco, wine, and coffee. We recommend getting your mouth healthy first, and then concerning oneself with the colour. There is an appropriate order, and this one has the patient's best interests at heart!

WARREN HENDERSON
If many people are surprised to see Tyson Baillie leading the West-ern Hockey League in scoring this season, Lorne Frey is not among them.
e Kelowna Rockets’ assistant GM and direc-tor of player personnel said the 20-year-old cen-tre is simply doing what the club expected of him in his nal season of ma-jor junior hockey.
“We projected a couple of years ago, that if he was still here as a 20-year-old, he’d be right up there with the top guys in the league,” said Frey.
“(Baillie’s) always been a scorer, he’s been in the league a long time, and he’s just gotten better every year. I don’t think a lot of us with the team are surprised at all.”
rough the Rock-ets rst 40 games this season, Baillie led with league with 63 points on 24 goals and 39 assists.
For Baillie’s part, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound forward expects noth-ing less of himself in his last tour of duty in the WHL.
“I felt like I could do this,” said Baillie, the 53rd overall pick in the 2010 bantam draft. “As a fth-year guy, a 20-year-
old, I think a lot was ex-cepted of me, but more of it comes from what I expect of myself. I ex-pected to be a leader and I’ve tried to live up to that.”
Because of what’s per-ceived as his less-than- uid skating style, the Fort Saskatchewan, AB, native has had his share of detractors over the years. But the doubts of others has only served as extra impetus for Baillie to succeed.
“ ere have always been naysayers and there still are, but that’s what drives me and motiv-ates me,” he said. “I feel like I have a passion for the game, a passion to score goals and to win, so I think that’s what the keys are for me.”
Frey said Baillie has worked hard at improv-ing his skating abil-ities over the years and more than holds his own against other top players in the league.
Any de ciencies Bail-lie may lack, Frey said he more than compensates with work ethic, skill and hockey sense.
“ e thing he has al-ways brought and still does, is work ethic,” Frey said.
“He works hard and he has a good skill level to go along with that. He has a great shot, great
alertness, and the puck just seems to follow him around. He’s always been
a big-time scorer and he’s had a great run and great career with us.”
While there is still half a season remaining and much can happen in
the interim, Baillie is on pace to become the rst Rockets player ever to
win a WHL scoring title. Jesse Schultz, in 2003,
and Colin Long, in 2009, both came close but set-tled for second best each time.
“ ere’s a long way to go,” Baillie conceded, “but right now it’s pretty cool to be on top of the league in scoring, a lot of great players have been there.
“A lot of great play-ers have come through with the Rockets, so to become the rst for our team would be a huge honour.”
And it’s not just in 2015-16 that Baillie has been a proli c o ensive producer. He is the sixth all-time scorer in the his-tory of the Rockets fran-chise—dating back to Tacoma—with 276 points (as of Tuesday).
e over-age centre is also well known for be-ing a clutch perform-er, having delivered more than a few big goals dur-ing his career, including ve game winners in last season’s playo run. It’s a role Baillie thrives on.
“I always like a good challenge, I like when the pressure is on me to perform,” he said. “ e big game situations, when the game’s on the line, it doesn’t make me nervous, it just makes me want to be the go-to guy.”

International elite midget tournament starts today
e puck drops on the 37th edition of the BDO Kelowna International Elite Midget Tournament this afternoon, Jan. 6, at Rutland Arena.
Twelve teams will com-pete for the 2016 title, in-cluding the host Kelowna Fripp Warehouse Rockets and the BCMML’s Oka-nagan Rockets.
e nal is set for 12:30
p.m. Sunday at Rutland West.
e host Rockets will open the tourney Wednes-day night against Pacif-ic Academy from Victoria. Puck drop at Rutland West is 7 p.m.
Kelowna head coach Lee Hamilton is looking for his tier 1 team to ele-vate its play to a new level over the next four days.
“For us, this is the pin-nacle of what we’re aim-ing for right now,” Hamil-ton said. “We’ve been pre-paring our team to be able to match the speed, match the play for major midget because obviously this is one step up from what we are used to.”
e Okanagan Rock-ets are making their fourth appearance at the tourna-
ment. e major midget team won in both 2010 and 2014, before coming up short in its bid to go 3-for-3 last year.
“It’s a great tournament for the whole commun-ity and we’re happy to sup-port it,” said Okanagan Rockets’ GM Braeden Pistawka. “It’s a tourna-ment that showcases a lot of skill.
“For us, it gives us a chance halfway through our season to play a lot of meaningful games and to showcase a lot of our play-er to scouts who come out to this tournament.”

LAKE COUNTRY MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES
CURLERS circa 1918 took to the ice on Kalamalka Lake. If you have clues as to their identities the Lake Country Museum would love to hear from you.
Curling became popular in Eastern Can-ada in the early 19th century and as the West opened up, the game found a natural home
with its long cold winters and idle time for prairie farmers.
Clubs were formed in Winnipeg, Calgary and other western cites in the
1880s. e game became
popular in the Okanagan at the turn of the cen-tury. e rst record-ed game was played on
the Spallumcheen Riv-er in Enderby in 1893, the same year that a pri-
Curling came to Lake Country early 1900s

vate rink was built beside the Vernon Hotel. e Vernon Curling Club was formed in 1908 and the club hosted the Oka-nagan’s rst valley-wide bonspiel in 1909.
In 1912 the Vernon Curling Club built a modern facility in Polson
Park featuring six sheets of natural ice. Arti cial ice was not introduced in Vernon until 1938.
e photo on page A11 was taken in 1918 of local curlers on Kala-malka Lake in front of the Rainsford Ranch owned by George Goulding. e curlers have not been identi-
ed. It is di cult to de-termine from the photo-graph how organized the sport was in Oyama. e stones are standard-ized, undoubtedly im-ported from the Isle of Ailsa Craig in Scotland, the source of virtually all curling stones to this day.
Other than that evi-dence of professionalism,
the photograph captures a very informal gather-ing. e curlers’ clothing and footwear were not uniform, the brooms ap-pear to be of the regu-lar household variety, the curlers are not sup-ported by any onlookers and there is no evidence of them having marked o a curling sheet on the
ice. Perhaps they were just practising for the up-coming bonspiel in Ver-non.
If anyone can identify the curlers in the photo, please contact the Lake Country Musuem at www.lakecountrymuseum.com.
