Empowering women with IT Skills

As part of its VogueEmpower campaign, Conde Nastsponsored young women to attend a three-monthbasic IT course in the Kamalini Delhi centres. Thestudents cleared an NIIT exam to gain theircertificate, as Kamalini is a partner with NIITFoundation with training of the trainers, coursematerials and external exams. Other sponsorships ofstudents through Give India foundation came fromPVR Nest, Moksh & Threads, Suchitra S by S.

The construction is nearly complete but we still need your help to finish and equip the new building. You can help as Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives like some recent donors: Magneti Marelli has sponsored a classroom, PetronetLNG sponsored the water-harvesting system, Haldiram’s sponsored brickwork, and United Phosphorus Ltd. sponsored wood work. We have the help of the German Embassy to install solar water heating, but we are still looking for support for solar security lighting, security grilles, doors, water filtration and training equipment in sewing, computers and hospitality.

The Kamalini Vocational Training Centre began in New Delhi in 2007 to promotetechnical skills training for women and girls who lack basic education. The founders ofKamalini are women governors of the registered society, Educational & DevelopmentInitiatives (EDI) who had formed Protsahan Charitable Trust. Kamalini extends the workthat had been started by volunteers of EDI since 1995: to help fill the gaps in educationand skills of migrant domestic workers from remote areas of India. Kamalini gotunderway with support of both EDI and Protsahan in two small rented venues in urbanvillages of Delhi. Vocational training imparted in sewing, basic computers, cooking andhousekeeping, as well as education in English language and basic literacy.

The beneficiaries of Kamalini appreciate the flexible timings, courses designed forpersons with minimum prior preparation, and fees made accessible for those whocannot afford to pay the full cost. The personal attention received at Kamalini maintainsstudent retention even of former school drop-outs to complete the 3 to 6-monthcourses and take their exams to get certificates, in some cases, government-recognizedor industry-recognized certificates. And the supportive all-women’s atmosphere hashelped marginalized persons to grow in confidence (so say 68% of former students) toseek employment or begin home-based businesses such as stitching clothes for theirfamilies and neighbors or boutiques. And they have gained skills and education whichhas led to 60% to claim additional household income through employment or savings.

Early on the promoters of the project saw both the need and the potential to establish aproperly designed and equipped venue for the long term that could serve more women:the Kamalini Vocational Training Campus. A series of surveys and outreach into variousvillages, a search for a site, and lots of fundraising efforts made possible the acquisitionin 2010 by EDI of 5 acres of agricultural land on the Sohna-Gurgaon Road in Haryana,35 km from Delhi. By 2012, the zoning and building permissions were in place toestablish on the site a vocational training institute for women, including a hostel forstudents from remote areas and an in-house training conference block for short-termresidential programs. After a publicly advertised competitive bid process, civil, electricaland plumbing contracts have been awarded under the guidance of the architecture firmStudio 4D, and construction commenced in 2013. The project is in the finishing stagesand slated to complete in 2016 thanks to the support of a consortium of foundations,corporate donors and private individuals.

The outreach programmesincluded working with womenrefugees from Afghanistanwho underwent training onupgrading their skills inembroidery and sewing tochannelise it for incomegeneration.

With the support of Bancaja and the DASYC Foundation, Kamalini has been runninginitial training sessions and outreach programs in and around the new campus site. Theseactivities are directed to underprivileged young girls and women in the adjoining villagesof Haryana, who lack appropriate skills training facilities and employment opportunities,and face uneasy access to the urban surroundings.

Kamalini also held dental hygiene camps in Shahpur Jat and Ghamdoj , a village on Sohna Road with the help of dental students from France. A career counselling session was also organised for students in a Government school in the same village

In midst of the progress of new campusconstruction, sessions on Nutrition and BasicHygiene were conducted for women at theconstruction site of Kamalini new campus.The lessons were imparted to the womenworkers at the site on topics such as personal

and household hygiene, hygienic food habitsand nutrition. The sessions included bothlecture and activity mode followed by someknowledge about contagious diseases andhow to prevent the spread of such diseasesand infections.

The new Kamalini Vocational Training Campus on the Sohna Road, Gurgoan district, is one of the projects of Educational & Development Initiatives.

Educational & Development Initiatives (EDI) is a Registered Society started in Delhi in 1995, with the aim of fostering ideals of service, advancement of learning, and relief for the poor, with New Delhi Register of Societies Registration No. S/28/95 dated 3 July 1995.
