February 2013

Principal’s Message

Aloha Students, Parents, Staff, and Community Members:

A big ‘Mahalo’ to all who continue to support our students’ learning and

activities!

Have you noticed that our picnic benches have been given a new coat of paint or

that there are now newly painted blocks for students to play on? Our PTSA

members were here on a Saturday to give our campus a fresh look. Mahalo to

Tim Atkins, manager from Home Depot who showed up with painting supplies

along with several Home Depot workers to help with the project!

Through the generosity of our community businesses, Waimea Canyon Middle

School’s Science Fair display was held at Waimea Plantation Cottages. Those

who were able to attend the event saw the students display their projects with

pride as they explained the ‘inquiry process’ used to lead to the conclusion.

Recognition goes to the science teachers who taught the process, parents,

families and support staff who assisted students with their display boards and to

the judges who interviewed the students on their projects. A special thank you

goes to both Waimea Plantation Cottages for the use of their facilities and to

Pioneer for hosting the event!

Our students took their Hawaii State Assessment reading in December and the H.S.A. math at the end of January. As a reminder, when the student meets proficiency, he/she will not need to participate in the second administration unless the parent/guardian writes a letter requesting participation. We appreciate your role in your child’s education. Remember to keep in contact with the school if you have any concerns or questions. Sincerely,

Glenda L.B. Miyazaki

WCMS SCIENCE FAIR RESULTS . Thank you to all the WCMS staff, parents, and community

members who came out to show their support for our Science

Fair this year! This event would not have been possible

without the tremendous support and sponsorship from Pioneer

and Waimea Plantation Cottages. In addition, many

businesses, organizations, and people made this a successful

Science Fair by helping with the setup, signing in and signing

out students, supervising students, monitoring the

refreshments, providing science/math activities for students,

and judging the students' projects. .

. This year, many students said that they would only participate

if the fair was held at the cottages. As a result, we had 108

projects and a lot of students who came out to support their

friends. The judges were very impressed by the quality of

projects, the skills displayed, and the demeanor of the students

when they were interviewed. Many expressed interest and

enthusiasm about being a judge next year. . The winners are....

1st Jacky Lin, 8th grade - Hydropower

2nd Andrew Evans, 8th grade - Popsicle Stick

Bridge

3rd Braden Kobayashi, 7th grade - Hydroponics
