Industrial control system securityThanks to Curtis Horn for giving a presentation on regarding industrial control system security.

This meeting was announced in advance by a separate mailing. Section meetings and events are also an-nounced by email and posted on the Section website, www.isaoc.org. Those not receiving email notices of meetingshould contact ISA at (919) 549-8411 or [email protected] and request that email addresses and other contact informationbe updated.

Industrial control system security has been in the background of controls practice until recently. Severaldevelopments have brought security issues to the forefront. The two major developments that have increased theperceived vulnerability of industrial controls are the widespread adoption of Ethernet as the basis of control networksand the increased awareness ‘hackers’ have placed on control systems equipment in the past 15 years. TV & Movieshave used hacking of industrial control systems as a plot element, in addition hacker/cyber attacks on industrialcontrols have been highlighted in the media when they did occur, all of which has also raised awareness that suchsystems are vulnerable to attack.

This discussion covered motivating factors, penetration vectors and defense in depth methodology. Examples ofattacks that failed and some that succeeded were discussed. ISA 99 highlighting the parallels with ISA 84 as a way forthose familiar with safety practices to understand the similarities and differences from security practices wasexplained. Tools and resources currently available for control systems practitioners were covered.

Curtis Horn is a physicist and licensed control systems engineer in California with15 years’ experience in Instrumentation & Controls. After leaving academia he haspracticed in many industries as an engineer including manufacturing, water/waste-water,nuclear, petroleum and power.

Project sizes he has participated in have varied from single instrument installationsto multi-billion dollar plants. In addition he has worked for companies (such as CarolloEngineers, WorleyParsons, and ST Microelectronics) ranging in size from a small (under10 employees) to multinational corporations with 10’s of thousands of employees invarying roles, including engineering & management.

Instrumentation 2015 Expo Training & Careers

By Gerald Herder, ISA Los AngelesLiaison to Cal Poly Student Section

At Instrumentation 2015 on July 21, thisPLC/Control Lab Water Circulation System willbe demonstrated by the students who designedand built it.

The presentation and demonstration will beof special interest to those interested in thepractical application of PLC’s and thoseconsidering a caereer in a technology career.

The objective of the project was todemonstrate a solution to the real life challenge

of consistent water storage and pressurized water to a populated area usingindustrial type equipment. The challenge of providing consistent water andwater pressure is often overlooked despite society’s heavy dependence onwater. The demand for water varies throughout the day, peaking early in themorning when sprinklers turn on and people begin showering and again inthe evening when many people arrive home from work.. Public waterSCADA systems must adjust rapidly, pumping water at varying rates toensure appropriate pressure.

Water pressure at the faucet is most often generated by the difference

in elevation between the water reservoirand faucet. The reservoir is filled by waterpumped in from groundwater or otherwater sources. The SCADA system mustdetect a change in demand for water andadjust accordingly or the reservoir mayoverflow or go empty.

This project seeks to address thisproblem and provide valuable real-time and historical telemetry through anindustry-grade SCADA system. Key Hardware and Software Elements:Allen-Bradley Micrologix PLC’s and Ignition Software by InductiveAutomation. As built the project can be controlled manually, by high-lowlevel control or by continuous PID control of a pump system, key systemvariables such as set points and limits can be viewed and controlled througha wireless link to ones tablet computer.

Gerald Herder has been Chair of the Engineering TechnologyDepartment at Cal Poly Pomona since 1998 and maintains a continuousinterest in Industrial Control, Power Systems and Programmable LogicControllers. Prof Herder has BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineer-ing from Cal Poly Pomona, and has worked for Southern CaliforniaEdison (SCE). Professor Herder has been involved in the Instrumenta-tion, Simulation and Control Laboratory sponsored by NSF.

The importance of ISA-88continues to increase

While the ISA-88 standard was created 20 years ago, its applicationand guidelines continue to be highly relevant in modern manufacturing, particularly as industries adopt more modular design and construction innew plants and upgrades. This article, published in the March/April 2015issue of InTech magazine, illustrates how ISA-88 concepts are critical increating modularized control software and reducing costs.

Its importance continues to increase as a guide for all manufacturers, but particularly in the chemical and oil and gas industries. These and relatedindustries are enjoying a resurgence in North America. New sources of oiland gas make the landscape far more attractive for plant upgrades andgreenfield construction throughout the hydrocarbon value chain—fromupstream extraction, pipelines, and refining to bulk and specialty chemicals. In some respects, the success of this resurgence is its own greatest threat, asdemand is growing rapidly for skilled engineering and constructionworkers. Some recent studies predict human resource shortages willimpose a severe constraint in the future.

Are Standards Practical?Standards Solutions from Industry Experts

The following is an excerpt from an article at www.isa.org.

ISA Standards help automation professionals streamline processes andimprove industry safety, efficiency, and profitability. Over 150 standardsreflect the expertise from over 4,000 industry experts around the world.Since 1949, ISA has been recognized as the expert source for automationand control systems consensus industry standards.

What is a Standard?Imagine moving into a new house and going to plug your refrigerator

into the wall - only to find that the plug doesn’t match the outlet! Electricalstandards set decades ago ensure that won’t happen. And standards todayallow you to get your film developed anywhere in the world, or make aphone call from here to China. An ounce in North Carolina is the same asan ounce in Nebraska, and you can hook up almost any kind of stereocomponent from any electronics store.

All of these conveniences are the result of a standard, a set ofcharacteristics or quantities that describes features of a product, process, service, interface or material.

Standards don’t just make life easier, they make it safer...and theyenhance companies’ profitability. For instance, builders save moneybecause construction materials are available in standard sizes. At the sametime, electrical codes that builders must follow save lives.

Some standards evolve through marketplace competition, thedominance of the IBM-based personal computer being a classic example. And the U.S. government has, for decades, viewed standards developmentas its role.

Today the U.S. government manages about 50,000 mandatorystandards - from automobile airbag regulations administered by the NationalHighway and Traffic Safety Administration to missile component standards

required by the Department of Defense. Another 40,000 standards are theresult of voluntary efforts by industry groups to develop consensusstandards that benefit vendors, suppliers and customers.

Key Features, Advantages, and Benefits of StandardsRealize a direct return on investment by lowering installation and

startup costs reducing need to maintain large inventories enabling inter-changeability of components improving design with less “custom” effortincreasing safety. Use of standards in industry improves communicationprovides practical application of expert knowledge represents years ofexperience and avoids necessity of starting each project from ground upStandards help you achieve operational excellence by improving perfor-mance lowering maintenance costs reducing downtime enhancingoperability saving money

ISA’s Role in Developing StandardsMore than 4,000 individuals cooperating with more than 140

committees, subcommittees, working groups and task forces are involved inISA standards. They’re developing standards in areas as diverse as ensuringthe safety of electrical equipment used in hazardous locations to cost-savings for interfaces between industrial process control computers andsubsystems.

How a Standard Saves MoneyISA’s batch control standard illustrates how using a standard cuts

costs. Food, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical companies buildfactories with increasingly sophisticated computer-driven automation. Thebatch standard ISA developed-ANSI/ISA-88.00.01 - shaves as much as 30percent off the cost of designing the system and software used in theseplants. ANSI/ISA-88.00.01 sets out a blueprint that engineers can use tomake portions of the code interchangeable, which is less expensive thandesigning each piece from the ground up.

The savings extend beyond the facility’s design, though. By using thebatch standard, companies save as much as 10 to 15 percent off the typical

cost of meeting Food and Drug Administration criteria for the reliability ofautomation equipment.

How a Standard Saves LivesOther ISA standards focus on safety. ISA has developed standards for

the performance requirements of toxic gas detectors, standards to keepelectrical equipment from igniting flammable material and standards toensure safety at nuclear power plants.

And some ISA standards can help an entire industry combine costsavings and safety. The most popular ISA standard is ANSI/ISA-5.1,Instrumentation Symbols and Identification. Developed in 1949 and mostrecently revised in 2009, these symbols are used in blueprints for every-thing from power plants to factories. If every contractor on a project knowsthe standard symbols, there are fewer communication problems that couldlead to costly delays or safety problems.

Using Standards to Help Your Business Expand GloballyYour company has a product that’s taken the United States by storm;

now you want to expand globally. But there is a hitch or, as the engineersmight tell you, a “technical barrier to trade.’’ Your company’s product, orthe process by which it’s made, doesn’t meet international standards. ManyISA standards are also international standards, and our committees strive tostay current with evolving global standards. ISA administers three commit-tees for the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which is oneof the two most widely recognized international standards groups, alongwith International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
