Lose the appearance of inches today. Reduce cellulite, slenderize your body, improve

circulation, hydrate your skin.I used to be someone who was sick all the time… always catching head/throat colds and sinus infections. Even when I wasn’t sick, I still coughed up nasty gunk every morning and my nose would constantly run– so frustrating, because I lead a

pretty healthy life and I don’t smoke. I gave up visiting doctors, who would only prescribe cover-up drugs to get me by until I got sick again next week or next month… FINALLY, I visited Janet at Circle of Life when I was miserably sick with stuffed sinuses. She’s such a lovely person and she knew exactly what to do. First, she made me sit in the sauna and insisted I come back to sauna the next couple days. She then taught me about a liquid, natural anti-biotic called Colloidal Silver. Since I was in such awful condition and had been for so long, Janet actually made me snort the liquid silver up my nose, explaining that it would attack all the gunk that had been living in my head for years. The snort was an awfully painful experience but it certainly did the trick! NO kidding, since that silver snort (two years ago!), I have not had any sinus issues and have been sick only twice. Now anytime I’m feeling under the weather, I head straight to the Circle of Life and sit in the sauna to sweat out my sickness. It heals me every time, almost instantly. Such simple solutions have made a HUGE improvement in my life! I’m healthy and I’m HAPPY! Janet is my super healer and I’m so appreciative!!

Dramatic and beautiful stalks of edible rhubarb… tart, delicious, nutritious: brimming with dietary fiber, vitamins

C and K, calcium, magnesium, manganese and potassium. Native to Asia, for 5000 years medicinal rhubarb (r. officinale & r. palmatum) has been used as a laxative, purgative, digestive and hepatic stimulant; but beware – its leaves and roots must not be eaten – they contain very high levels of oxalic acid and are poisonous. The seen and the unseen. The green stalks have more flavor/sweetness than the red. Go to our website, www.HBmag.com for many wonderful rhubarb recipes – using just the stalks, of course.

Researchers Fail to Reveal Full Drug PayBy Gardiner Harris And Benedict Carey. Published: June 8, 2008. A world-renowned Harvard child psychiatrist whose work has helped fuel an explosion in the use of powerful an-tipsychotic medicines in children earned at least $1.6 million in consulting fees from drug makers from 2000 to 2007, but for years did not report much of this income to university officials, according to information given to Congressional investigators. Researchers have shown that es-sential amino acids are precur-sors for serotonin and dopamine molecules. Tryptophan is the pre-

cursor for serotonin; tyrosine and pheny-lalanine are the precursors of dopamine. Serotonin and dopamine are two of the primary neurotransmitters that seem to be involved in the regulation and sensa-tion of appetite. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that are involved in the transfer of electrical energy between nerve cells.

These are “essential” amino acids because they cannot be produced by the body and must be supplied in the diet. Levels of neurotransmitters that are too low to facilitate proper transfer of electri-cal energy can cause disease and illness. Prescription medications have been the standard of treatment for neurotransmitter diseases such as depression or anxiety.

These medications can lower neurotrans-mitter levels even further. This can make the real cause of the problem worse. They can temporarily trick the body by increas-ing levels of the neurotransmitters in the “gap” between nerve cells. This leads to more neurotransmitter being degraded in the long run.

Research is now becoming clear that there are common diseases and symp-toms that are associated with neurotrans-mitter depletion including:

• Migraine headaches• Depression• Panic disorder, anxiety.• Obesity• Irritable bowel disease• Fibromyalgia• Eating disorders• Parkinson’s Disease• Premenstrual syndrome

Practitioners of Age Management Medicine have developed protocols of amino acid supplementation of neu-rotransmitter depletion-associated medi-cal conditions. Such protocols help patients improve these and other medical

conditions, using safe and natural methods. For example, serotonin, which controls mood, can be elevated. By giv-ing specific amino acids, many medical conditions can be safely treated. Amino acids, being natural to the human body, are extremely well tolerated.

Practitioners of Age Management Medicine now have additional tools to treat patients “drug free!”

Dorothy Dumbra is a Registered Nurse (UCD), Clinical Nutritionist and Specialized Kinesiologist, with an extensive background in traditional and integrative medicine, applied kinesiology and nutrition. In ad-

dition, Dorothy completed a 4-year program in Theology from Loyola, New Orleans, IME, and is certified in Clinical Pastoral Counseling and Education. For more than 30 years she has worked with private clients, professional and educational or-ganizations and groups to serve the growth of others.

Dorothy has published, presented and educated widely, on subjects including advanced kinesiology, allergies, candida, car-diovascular and respiratory disorders, chronic fatigue, diet and nutrition, energy work, hormone replacement therapy, medita-tion, oriental medicine, osteoporosis and arthritis, spirituality, stress management and Touch For Health, as well as specific women’s and men’s health issues.

Today, as an educator and counselor living in the thriving community of South Lake Tahoe, Dorothy is dedicated to the education of others. In her private practice, Dorothy’s heal-ing approach is to integrate and balance the whole person by increasing personal responsibility and awareness of one’s health. She develops nutritional and educational programs based upon the body’s own feedback, obtained through the use of applied kinesiology and other health assessment tools. Through this process, Dorothy’s clients learn how to recognize allergic reactions and physiological conditions such as glycemic dysfunction, thyroid and digestive disorders and other signs of

stress or imbalance. Her objective is to awaken the body’s in-nate potential to achieve rapid healing and optimum physical and emotional health status.

Like many other practitioners in the integrative/alternative medicine field, Dorothy believes that disease begins in the energy fields of the body long before other physical symptoms become apparent. Applied kinesiology (muscle response testing developed by Dr. George Goodhart, DC) monitors the energy flow through muscles and may be used to determine and rebal-ance physiological, nutritional, environmental and emotional factors within the body. It is based upon clinically reproducible indicators and sound physiological principles.

Dorothy combines these approaches with her training in spiritual and emotional counseling, and mentoring to help cli-ents make lasting and meaningful health and lifestyle changes. In this way, Dorothy synthesizes her holistic approach to heal-ing, believing that the personal fabric of our physical, emotional and spiritual parts is like a spider web – if one strand is shaken, the entire fabric of the web is affected.

In the immediate future, Dorothy plans to begin classes in Touch For Health and preventive nutrition, bringing these powerful elements together to support total healing, pain relief and precise nutritional and structural integration. Her great joy in life is to share her many gifts with others.

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

INGREDIENTWATCH

By Lauren Birtwhistle

Having an allergy to a common food is difficult. Whether it is dairy, wheat, peanuts or shell fish, it puts a strain on daily life. But a new allergy is becoming more and more prevalent these days, and it is proving

to be one of the most difficult products to avoid. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing, the corn product allergy!

Many people have lived with serious symptoms for years, only to find out later in life that they are suffering from an allergy to corn. Symptoms often appear just as with other allergies. These include coughing, sneezing and swelling of the tongue, face and throat. A severe corn allergy reaction can even lead to a life threatening condition known as anaphylactic shock. Some people complain of intestinal problems as well. A physician can test you for a definite diagnosis. The distinguishing factor of a corn allergy is that it is extremely hard to manage.

Corn is literally in thousands of consumer products. It is America’s largest crop, covering 81.6 billion acres of land. The most difficult part of handling a corn allergy is knowing what foods and ingredients contain corn. People with a corn allergy may react not only to raw or cooked corn, but also to products derived from corn. So what are these?

If it has the word “corn” in it, it should obviously be avoided. Corn syrup, High fructose corn syrup, Corn oil, Corn meal, Cornstarch, Corn sugars, Corn tortillas, and Corn chips…are common and abundant corn products. But the list is far from over. Obscure products like ketchup, cheese, chili, chow mein, fish sticks and salad dressings are examples of foods that contain

corn or corn-derived products, though you would not suspect them. Corn has made its way into myriad products that you probably have never even thought of.

Reading ingredient labels may seem like the obvious solution for spotting corn in your products. But unfortunately it’s not that easy. Sometimes calling a company may not even be sufficient, as these corn-derived products can be so sneaky that employees may not know of them. For example, sour cream lists cream as an ingredient, but if you read the ingredients of cream, it can contain sodium citrate, which can be derived from corn and cause an allergy reaction. Citric acid can be made with fruit, but is often made from corn. Xanthan gum is another commonly used ingredient in sauces, salad dressings, frozen foods, and even toothpaste. And yes, it too, is derived from corn.

It seems the best way to avoid corn products is to know as much as possible. Become familiar with the technical or scientific terms for corn and corn-derived products. The more information you have, the more careful you can be.

The list of hidden corn sources is too long to print here, so we have listed websites below, including our own, that you can visit to see detailed lists of products that contain corn:

QU

ESTION

S OFSPIRITU

ALITY

Everyone occasionally needs some inner rejuvenation. Whether you want to break new ground, spiritually speaking, or you simply want to reclaim your peace in the midst of a hectic life, going on retreat can be a

perfect solution.A true retreat is much more than a vacation—it can be a

time of conscious, spiritual opening, of making an enjoyable effort to rise to an entirely new state of awareness. Here are a few tips for a retreat experience that is both relaxing and spiritually rewarding:

Find a supportive environment. The right environment can give you a tremendous boost—and the wrong one can work against you. (Isn’t that part of why you need a retreat in the first place?) If possible, choose a place with an established spiri-tual tradition, one that is harmonious with your own spiritual inclinations. For example, if you are primarily devotional, you probably won’t feel nurtured in a strongly intellectual environ-ment, and vice versa. Look also for a place with the uplifting influence of beautiful natural surroundings, and with space to be alone whenever you wish.

If you’re new to being on retreat, go to a retreat center that offers individual guidance. Optional, guided group activities—such as yoga postures, meditations, nature walks, etc.—are also a plus. Occasionally tapping into a group magnetism can help even experienced retreatants keep their energy high and focused.

Other scheduling possibilities include guided yoga postures and/or meditation before breakfast, and possibly again later in the day. While you might feel that you really need your sleep, you’ll find a tremendous benefit in starting the day with guided practices, even if you need to nap later in the day! Consider trying more guided sessions of yoga and meditation than you might want to at first—you may discover a more satisfying sense of relaxation and rejuvenation than you get from sleep or lounging around.

Just a word about food: Many people go on retreats hoping to lose weight. As much as possible, try not to make a big deal of food during your retreat. If you are able to touch a deep part of your being, to experience your soul, to feel God, this is much more central and long lasting. Since the food at your retreat center might be different from what you eat at home, you may want to bring along some healthy snacks, such as nuts and

dried fruit. You probably won’t need them, but they may give you the confidence not to over-eat at meal times. Overeating will make you feel lethargic and will be counterproductive to your overall goals.

Prepare yourself. Just as athletes need training for peak performance, you’ll get more out of your retreat if you prepare in advance. Eat right and get rested; otherwise, you may need the first day or two of your retreat just to pull yourself together. If you already engage in spiritual practices, get a head start by put-ting extra energy into them before departing.

Go on a “worry fast.” As soon as you leave home, put all problems forcefully out of your mind. Preoc-cupation with problems can suffocate your retreat; while a worry-free retreat can actually help you solve problems more effectively.

What you do is not as important as whether your inspiration and “joy level” are high. You don’t have to pray and meditate all day long; few people can do that constructively, anyway. You don’t even have to stay in silence or solitude, though many people find these beneficial. And don’t “over-retreat”: if you’re a first-timer, 2–4 days is plenty. Focus on enjoyment, rather than “shoulds.”

Schedule variety into your retreat. For example, you might use the mornings for your most interiorized efforts: prayer, meditation, journal writing, or spiritual reading. Then be more expansive in the afternoons: walk in nature, do something cre-ative, or listen to uplifting music or lecture tapes. Reserve your evenings for lighter fare: a spiritual video, a humorous book, or simply relaxed, quality time with like-minded people. And always allow for the inspiration of the moment; don’t be locked into anyone’s agenda—even your own.

Above all, relax and enjoy your retreat. Don’t put pressure on yourself to see immediate, dramatic results. When you go on retreat, you are planting a spiritual seed. If you water it by your own continuing spiritual efforts, in time it will surely sprout into the flower of peace and joy that you seek.

Think you don’t have the cash required to live green? Think again! These tips will make your home greener than it is today with little or no money down.

Accent your area.Lay a few area rugs down on hardwood, tile or linoleum for a carpetlike effect without harmful glues. Choose rugs made from natural fibers such as cotton, wool, hemp, bamboo and sisal, and look for vegetable dyes or no dye at all. Rugs made from recycled materials are another green option.

Set the mood.Turning the lights down makes for an inviting atmosphere, and it saves electricity. A compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) has a 10,000-hour lifespan. New low-wattage CFLs work with conventional incandescent dimmers and cost about $20 per bulb.

Found it.Finding free or cheap furnishings is tons of fun, and your budget will thank you. Check Craigslist (www.Craigslist.org), Freecycle (www.Freecycle.org), thrift stores and curbside pickup for unique pieces that need a makeover. Breathe new life into hand-me-downs by reupholstering with fresh, breathable fabrics such as organic cotton, hemp or linen.

Lose the shoes. Here’s an easy one: Take your shoes off when you enter your home. Shoes track traces of dirt, dust and other toxins into the house, which leads to poorer air quality and more vacuum-ing and cleaning. Designate a place near your entryway for footwear.

Create a healthier kitchen.Follow this recipe to reduce, reuse and recycle.• Befriend your dishwasher. In general, a regular dishwasher cycle uses less water than handwashing. Skip the prerinsing and save even more. For caked-on food, soak in cold water (to avoid using energy to heat the water). Some dishwashers have a heated dry feature; turn it off and either towel or air dry.

• Don’t buy the water. Fitness and energy waters may be all the rage, but there’s no beating pure, unadulterated water. If you’re concerned about the quality of your water supply, invest in an under-sink filtration system or a water-filtering pitcher. There’s none of the waste associated with bottled water, and it’s significantly cheaper in the long run.

• Down with disposables. Paper napkins and paper towels are garbage waiting to happen. And while you can buy recycled-

paper or other eco-friendly versions, they’re still not reusable. Switch to cloth napkins and dish towels instead. They may cost more, but you can use them indefinitely. When buying dishes and flatware, avoid plastic, which is made from nonrenewable petro-leum and may impart odors and hazardous substances into food. Instead, buy metal flatware from a secondhand or consignment store. It will be less expensive than new, and you’ll be promoting reuse—and you might come across cool, retro designs.

A Bathroom BoostAbout 65 percent of your home’s water use can be traced to the bathroom, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

• Tweak your throne. The first sign of a troubled toilet is the sound of running water between flushes. Malfunctioning toilets can leak hundreds of gallons of water a day, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Test your toilet’s water-tightness with a few drops of food coloring in the tank; if the bowl shows traces of color after 15 minutes, you’ve got a leak. When it’s time to replace the toilet, opt for a high-efficiency one. For a couple hundred bucks, a 1.3–gallon-per-flush model will save $100 a year on your water bill, according to the EPA. Start your search for the perfect throne by visiting www.EPA.gov/watersense/pp/find_het.htm.

• Just say no to vinyl. Exchange your PVC-vinyl shower curtain or liner for one made with hemp. The fiber is naturally antifungal and antibacterial. After showers, leave the curtain extended for even drying. To wash, scrub with a bit of borax or distilled vinegar added to water and hang to dry.

• Combat clogs. Baking soda and vinegar work magic on bathtub drain problems. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain fol-lowed by a cup of vinegar (preferably hot) to unclog the drain. The baking soda fizzes after the vinegar combines with it, and it eats away at clogs. If your drain backs up, don’t use a declogging chemical; first try a drain auger or “snake.” For small clogs, mini-snakes work as well as full-size snakes—and they’re cheaper.

The Better Bedroom• Get it covered. Many conventional mattresses contain hazardous or irritating chemicals such as formaldehyde. While a natural-fiber or rubber-tree latex mattress is ideal, a natural mattress topper over your conventional mattress may be more economical.

• Dress your bed accordingly. In summer, switch your AC off at night, then outfit your bed with lightweight linens and open a bedroom window. If you’re still too warm, invest in a small fan; it will draw less energy than cooling your entire home. In winter, lower your thermostat at bedtime—keep it set above 60 degrees, or your pipes might freeze—and add an extra blanket. Or use a space heater in the bedroom.

If you’ve been reading the health headlines in the mainstream media recently, you might have come to the conclusion that vitamins are the most dangerous thing you could possibly

consume. Headlines declare antioxidants to be useless, vita-min C to be dangerous and vitamin E to be deadly! Nutrition, it seems, is suddenly under attack by the mainstream media, and if you believe all the headlines, you should probably flee from dietary supplements and start chugging prescription drugs as quickly as possible.

But what’s really behind these scare tactics, and is there any real science backing the headlines appearing in the popular press? To answer this question, consider one highly-publicized example of a large antioxidant study (vitamins E and C) in women. A nine-year study followed more than 8,000 women to determine the effects of antioxidants in preventing heart disease. The study found a significant reduction in stroke (31% reduction) and heart attacks (22%) among those women who actually took the vitamins. But if you consider all the women who originally signed up for the study – including those thou-sands who never took the vitamins – it turns out the results show nothing substantial.

This all comes down to common sense. Of course you’re not going to see positive results in women who didn’t take the vita-mins; nor would you see results from anything else (a drug, an herb, etc.) if the women didn’t actually take that substance. And yet the mass media stories about the study all declare antioxi-dants to be useless because they are considering the measured results of all the women who didn’t take the antioxidants. It’s like taking a hundred cars that ran out of gas, filling up 40 of them with gasoline, then declaring that gasoline doesn’t make cars run because 60 of them are still on empty.

It sounds absurd, I know, but it’s only the beginning of this story: Time after time, medical researchers and the mainstream media seem to go out of their way to distort scientific studies and misinform readers about the usefulness of vitamins and dietary supplements.

Vitamin E will kill you! (And other media lies)Another study publicized last year declared that vitamin E

was deadly and would kill you with heart attacks and strokes. This particular meta-data analysis was based on synthetic vita-min E (a completely unnatural chemical made from petroleum derivatives), not the natural vitamin E that appears in nature. Furthermore, many of the study subjects were elderly patients suffering from heart disease, putting them at high risk for heart attacks from day one. When these patients started to die during the study, researchers declared, “The vitamin E killed them!”

Researchers also went to great lengths to cherry-pick stud-ies that showed negative results for vitamin E, tossing out all the studies that showed positive results. This kind of subjective inclusion of clinical trials in a meta analysis is a classic sign of scientific fraud.

What you’re thinking: Researchers are smarter than that. They wouldn’t be so foolish as to count the results of people who didn’t take the vitamins, or give supplements to the near-dead and blame their deaths on the supplements. But you might be assuming these researchers are operating with ethics in the first place, and experience tells us they’re not. Many are recipients of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants offered to them by drug companies. Their primary research (and revenue source) involves studying the effects of pharmaceuticals. Researchers who don’t consistently “discover” positive effects for pharma-

ceuticals are eventually blackballed from the industry and find themselves jobless and unemployable. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure applied to researchers to make sure they uncover findings that support the financial interests of the drug companies. Eighty percent of all clinical trials funded by drug companies produce results that are favorable to the financial interests of those companies.

Similarly, there is also a lot of pressure to find something wrong with dietary supplements, herbs and nutrition – pre-cisely because such substances compete with pharmaceuticals. The more consum-ers take nutritional supplements, the less they need pharma-ceuticals (because nutri t ion actually prevents disease and keeps you healthy), so one of the key ways to ensure a strong future market for pharma-ceuticals is to discredit nutritional supple-ments and make people believe they’re somehow dangerous.

The Danger Of PharmaceuticalsThis is all quite laughable, given that

prescription drugs are now the 4th lead-ing cause of death in America. FDA-approved pharmaceuticals are killing at least 100,000 Americans a year right now, and just one diabetes drug recently scru-tinized for its health effects was reported by Dr. David Graham, a senior FDA drug safety researcher, to have likely killed more than 80,000 Americans! That’s more Americans than died in the entire Vietnam War, and this is from but one drug.

Almost nothing is killing Americans faster than prescription drugs: Not terror-ists, not war, not chemicals in the food, car accidents or drunk driving. Only cancer and strokes kill more Americans, and even in those cases, death is ac-celerated by the side effects of the phar-maceuticals used to treat those diseases (chemotherapy is especially toxic and causes tremendous harm to the liver, kidneys and brain). Pharmaceuticals are so universally dangerous to the health

and safety of Americans that if they were herbs, they would have all been outlawed years ago.

And yet the mainstream media tries to distract the public and get people to focus on the dangers of vitamins instead. Vitamins have killed no one. No one ever died from taking natural vitamin E, or eat-ing superfoods or ingesting vitamin-rich berries. In fact, nutritional supplements and superfoods greatly enhance human health, protecting you from disease and greatly reducing your risk of cancer, heart disease, depression, diabetes, obesity and many other common diseases.

It is a curious sign of the times that the mainstream media, which receives bil-lions of dollars in advertising from drug companies , now finds itself in the busi-ness of misinforming Americans, trying to

convince them that day is night, up is down, and nutrition is dangerous. War is peace, ignorance is strength and free-dom is tyranny. It’s right out of the book “1984” by George Orwell, and sadly, it has become reality with the mainstream media today.

So don’t be suckered by the headlines. Be a skeptical thinker, and consider who’s funding these skewed studies that some-how keep inventing dangers associated with herbs or dietary supplements. Herbs, vitamins and superfoods are astonish-ingly safe, and yet pharmaceuticals are so dangerous that each year, they kill more Americans than would fit in a superbowl football stadium. Where’s the news about all those deaths? Nowhere to be found. There are profits to protect and markets to defend. The people have to be kept ignorant of the true causes of health – and taught to fear nutrition – in order to keep the Big Pharma racket profitably rolling along.

Rescue your garden from insect invaders with common-sense methods & “green” repellents.

You’ve coddled your seedlings, nourished your soil, and provided a cozy habitat for beneficial birds and insects. Yet by early to midsummer, an explosion of aphids, Japanese beetles or some other insect pest threatens to destroy not only your serenity, but also your garden’s beauty and bounty.

The good news is you can stop these insect invaders without turning to dangerous pesticides. We rely on several common-sense strategies and time-tested herbal repellents that almost always do the trick.

Keep Your Eyes OpenThe strategies for staying ahead of garden pests are fairly

simple. First and foremost, be aware of the life in your garden. Look for insects and mites and observe their activity daily, or as often as possible. Scout for common pests, but keep in mind that some insects, such as ladybugs, lacewings and praying mantises, are beneficial predators that can help control pests. If you have trouble identifying what you’re seeing, contact your County Extension agent, who can help. The Penn State IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Program for home gardens (http://paipm.cas.psu.edu/385.htm) has photos and information on 25 common garden pests.

Damaged leaves are a good indication that a plant is infested with some insect pest. If you look a bit closer, you’ll probably see eggs, larvae and/or adult insects. Check the bottom of leaves, where pests (especially spider mites) often congregate. Also examine stem junctions, where mealybugs hide their egg masses. Aphids are especially fond of the tender tips of plants, and ants even will carry them there to keep the population growing!

Spraying SimplifiedNow that you’ve determined that a pest has taken up

residence among your plants, you can take actions to stop it. Begin with the least toxic, least expensive and most convenient method first: a strong spray of water.

You’ll need an adjustable nozzle turned to the fan setting. This will allow you to direct a wedge of water over a large plant surface. Adjust the pressure so the water will wash away pests without damaging the plant. Spray the entire plant, side to side and top to bottom—as well as the top and bottom of leaves—until the plant is completely clean.

The best time to spray water (or any control product) is in the cool of the day when plants are not in direct sunlight. In direct sun, water droplets act as tiny magnifiers, concentrating light on plant tissues and causing them to burn.

Plant-feeding pests also are less energetic and easier to target in early morning and evening.

Besides using these water baths to stop pests, we also use a homemade garlic-chile-soap spray, neem oil and horticultural oil, alternating among them monthly, if necessary, to keep pests off balance.

For instance, after we spot an infestation, we first blast the plant with plain water, then follow with garlic-chile-soap spray every three to five days until the pest is gone. A single spray rarely removes all of the tiny pest eggs, which are attached to leaves with strong webbing. Also, rain washes off the soap spray, so you need to re-spray every few days.

If the pest still is present after a month or so, we switch to a neem oil solution, applied according to package directions. And if neither the garlic-chile-soap nor the neem oil sprays do the trick after two months, we use horticultural oil spray the third month.

Garlic & Chile Insecticidal Soap SprayMakes about 3 cups concentrate• 10 to 12 large cloves of garlic• 4 to 6 hot chile peppers, dried or fresh• Generous 2 cups water• 1 tablespoon liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s or Shaklee Basic H™) OR any biodegradable liquid dishwash-ing soapOptional: 10 drops cinnamon, vetiver or eucalyptus es-sential oil

1. Put garlic, chiles and water into a blender and puree contents until foamy.

2. Let mixture stand at least 2 hours or overnight. When mixture settles, you will have a coral-colored liquid with sediment at the bottom.

3. Pour through a strainer lined with fine cheesecloth (or through a coffee filter or jelly bag) to remove particles that could block the sprayer valve.

4. Pour concentrate into a jar with plastic lid (not metal), add soap, stir and label.

5. Store in a cool, dark place until needed, up to a few months. For a 1-quart or 1-liter spray bottle, use 2 tablespoons concentrate and fill the rest of the bottle with water.

6. Spray plants late in the day, so hot sun can’t burn the plants. Cover the top and bottom of leaves. Re-apply as often as needed, but allow several days between applications.

For most people, the criteria for healthy joints is an absence of pain and adequate range-of-motion for easy movement. Here are two natural ways to promote healthy joints:Drink Water: • The movable joints of your body are lubricated and cush-ioned by synovial fluid excreted by the synovial membranes surrounding all your joints. This requires a hydrated body. • Drinking plenty of water helps your joints absorb the shocks of your everyday movements, preventing pain and wear-and-tear of the joint tissues. • Before having that next cup of coffee or tea, remember that caffeine is a diuretic, not a thirst quencher. • Start your day with a big glass of water, and keep it going throughout your day. Warm Up for Activity: • When joints aren’t moving (when you’re sleeping or sitting at your desk for a while), the synovial fluid is re-absorbed, leav-ing joints vulnerable and even stiff and painful to move. • Before getting up and rushing about your day, gently move all your joints while you’re still lying or sitting, allowing your joints to wake up and lubricate before you demand weight-bearing activity from them.

When it comes to reducing stress, nothing com-pares to Magnolia extract. And the best thing is that Magnolia extract comes in a perfect form from nature… and doesn’t produce any side effects.

How does Magnolia extract work?Magnolia extract is rich in the phytochemicals honokiol

and magnolol, which have numerous health benefits. One of the most impressive benefits is their ability to alleviate stress while producing a calming effect. Dozens of animal studies have shown that they act as a non-addictive, non-sedating anxiolytic (anti-anxiety and anti-stress) agent at low doses.

That means a small dose of Magnolia extract can help calm your nerves and al-leviate anxiety, without making you sleepy. The beauty about these two phytochemicals is that honokiol exerts an anti-anxiety ef-fect, and magnolol exerts an antidepressant effect… when you take Magnolia extract, you’re really “killing two birds with one stone”—anxiety and depression—in order to feel better mentally and emotionally.

Honokiol relieves stress without side effectsHonokiol has a long history of use in traditional Chinese

formulas that relieve anxiety without leaving you feeling like you’ve been drugged. In a recent study to determine whether honokiol depresses the central nervous system in the same way as diazepam (commonly known as Valium), two groups of mice were treated with honokiol and diazepam before running

through a maze. The honokiol group was more relaxed, and finished without any change in motor activity or muscle tone. On the other hand, the diazepam group exhibited several side effects, including sleepiness, disrupted learning and memory, muscle relaxation, and withdrawal symptoms. The results sug-gest that honokiol is less likely than diazepam to induce physical dependence, central nervous system depression, and amnesia when given at doses that produce an anti-anxiety effect.

A similar test found that honokiol significantly prolonged the time the animals spent in the maze, suggesting an anti-

anxiety effect. Normally, when rodents are placed in a maze, they like to hide rather than explore because they get anxious. These rodents appeared to be more relaxed, and expressed curiosity about their environment. When the animals were given honokiol in various doses over a period of seven days, the effects remained the same: there was no change in motor activity or in the animals’ performance. The animals receiving the diazepam (Valium), however, became de-pendent on the same dose, which hindered their performance.

To sum it up, when compared to pharmaceutical drugs such as Valium (diazepam), honokiol appears to be just as effective in its anti-anxiety activity, but without the strong sedative effect.

• modulating the activity of various neurotransmitters and related enzymes in the brain

• increasing choline acetyltransferase activity

• inhibiting acetylcholinesterase

• increasing acetylcholine release

Powerful Antioxidant ProtectionHonokiol and magnolol are both

strong antioxidants, and it appears they can help protect cardiovascular health. Taiwanese researchers found that Magno-lia extract is 1000 times more potent than alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) in inhibiting lipid peroxidation, a major contributor to atherosclerosis and heart disease.

A number of studies have shown that Magnolia extract protected the mitochon-dria (a cell’s powerhouse) from free radi-cal damage in the liver, heart, and brain cells of laboratory animals.

Shows Promise As An Anti-Cancer Agent

Researchers have been interested in compounds called angiogenesis inhibi-tors, which inhibit the growth of cancer tumors. Over the last several years, hundreds of clinical trials have been assessing their effectiveness against vari-ous kinds of cancer. Several studies have tested Magnolia extract on human cancer cells and found that it is an angiogensis inhibitor that:

• Could potentially be an effective drug for leukemia

• Inhibited proliferation of human lung squamous carcinoma and other tumors

• Decreased cancer cells in human colon and liver tumors.

In addition to all these benefits, studies have shown that Magnolia extract:

• Enhances steroid production by the adrenal cortex, which would make it a good supplement for counteracting ad-renal fatigue

• Inhibits bacteria and pathogenic fungi

• Reduces inflammation and pain

• Protects against seizures

• Acts as an antidote for pesticide poi-soning

• Plays a significant role in alleviating and controlling asthma

How safe is Magnolia extract? No significant toxicity or adverse

effects have been reported to date when it is taken as directed. Amazingly small doses (30 mg) of magnolol and honokiol are effective for anxiety and depression. Large doses exceeding 100 mg may cause a sedative effect and can interact with alcohol, increasing its effects. Therefore, driving or operating dangerous equipment should be avoided when taking larger doses of Magnolia extract.

Why take Magnolia extract? If you, or someone you care about,

tend to suffer from stress, anxiety, or depression, Magnolia extract may be just the thing you need to “take the edge off” and improve your quality of life … without the risk of side effects. If you’re looking for a potent, natural and safe an-tidepressant, antioxidant, or anticancer agent, consider adding Magnolia extract to your health regimen. Plant a tree, stop and smell the flowers … and gain a new appreciation for the Magnolia tree.

Have you noticed how when you attempt to begin a diet, suddenly you want to eat everything in

sight? This is because of the body’s abil-ity to adapt. Early men were hunters and gatherers. Food was not always read-ily available. Thus, the body adapted by storing fat to keep the body functioning during lean times. When you start a diet and reduce your intake of food, the body believes it is going to starve and begins to store fat. Early man was active and so when the body stored this energy, it was converted to lean muscle mass. Today people who diet without exercise often get fatter over time. Although your weight may drop initially, the weight loss consists mostly of water and muscle, and when the weight returns, it usually returns as fat.

Experts contend that people who want to drop pounds can do so more affectively by a consistent program of exercise even

if it is climbing stairs instead of taking the elevator; parking the car further in the parking lot while shopping requiring longer walks to the store; getting up and down more often while watching TV or working on the computer. Walking is one of the best exercises for toning muscles, increasing your metabolism, and improv-ing self- esteem.

One of the reasons maintaining the recommended body weight is so difficult for most people is because habits have been developed over time, usually from birth. Food is one of the first pleasures that a baby receives. The more a behavior is re-peated, it begins to build neuro-pathways that create either healthy or unhealthy behaviors, resulting in habits. The result of improper eating habits is evident today in the percentage of obese people.

We eat when we are sad or happy. We eat when bored, angry, fatigued or lonely. We eat when we want to be loved. We eat when we feel the need to insulate ourselves from pain. We eat to make ourselves big, i.e., to be noticed. We eat to make ourselves unattractive. There are a multitude of unhealthy reasons we eat. Food, like any other addictive substance, has become a substitute for learning healthy coping skills for living a healthy life.

Habits are difficult to change. How-ever, you can create new healthy habits by repetition, the same way the old unhealthy habits were created.

Start by changing your behavior and developing new eating habits:

1. Eat three healthy meals a day. In addi-tion, have three planned healthy snacks, preferably protein drinks.

2. Eat your meals slowly. Focus your at-tention on the smell, texture, and taste of the food. Chew each bite 20 times.

3. Eat your meals at the table or a des-ignated place. Do not eat while driving or while watching TV. This can lead to unconscious eating.

4. Keep food in the kitchen and out of sight. Do not keep unhealthy snacks eas-ily available.

5. Make sure your serving plates are small.

6. Do not eat everything on your plate. Always leave a portion of your food.

7. Never eat more than one small serving of each item of food.

8. Eat until you are comfortable. Never eat until you are full.

9. Be aware of your body’s signals. It will be easier to feel when you are really hun-gry instead of the feeling of emptiness cre-ated by pain, stress or other emotions.

10. Learn to substitute activities for food, e.g., take a walk; call a friend; read a book; take up a hobby etc.

11. Eat your last meal of the day as early as possible and if you must eat later, eat only small portions of light foods.

12. Never beat yourself up for perceived mistakes and always affirm positive thoughts about yourself, e.g., I AM SLIM; I AM ENERGETIC; I AM THE PERFECT WEIGHT FOR ME. Even if it’s not true, it will be soon enough. Your unconscious mind doesn’t know the difference in what you perceive as real and what is imagined.

Changing behavior requires a daily practice. If you need a little extra help, Hypnotherapy is one of the most power-ful natural tools for changing behavior. It can assist you in remembering what your body already knows and reminds you to focus on keeping your body healthy.

WHY DIETS FAILBy Tonda Adams, JD, CCHT

Page 21: July 2008 HB Mag

Often, those seeking to develop strength, muscle mass, and/or a leaner body, have subscribed to

the theory that one should eat massive amounts of protein, either in diet and/or protein supplements. In reality, this ad-ditional protein is not only unnecessary, but can put added stress on the kidneys as well.

In order to explain why, we must first understand what protein is, and how the body uses it. The protein molecule is com-prised of different, specific combinations of amino acids. When you consume protein, the body breaks it down into a variety of amino acids. All body tissue including muscle, hormones enzymes and antibod-ies, are built with amino acids.

Everyday living requires constant repair and replacement of body tissues. When you do a hard workout, you tear muscle fibers. The body uses the amino acids to repair the muscle fibers, and make them larger than before. However, even after an extremely grueling weight workout, the maximum amount of protein that the body can use is 6 to 7 grams of protein an hour. If you consume a protein drink after a workout, that protein will be present in your system and thus available for you to use for about 2 to 2.5 hours, meaning that the maximum amount of protein that your body will use from that drink to build muscle will be 14 to 21 grams.

So what happens to the other 20 or so grams in that protein drink? These unused amino acids are sent to the liver to be broken down for energy, just like glucose molecules, except that in addition to the hydrogen, carbon and oxygen atoms pres-ent in glucose, amino acids also contain nitrogen.

This means that when the liver breaks down the amino acids for energy, the by-product created is ammonia, which is then excreted by the kidneys as urea. The body is designed to do this, but on a low level.

A high-protein diet forces the kidneys and liver to work overtime, which sets you up for potential problems down the road.

What happens then to the energy that is released by the breakdown of amino acid molecules? They are either burned as energy or, if in excess of the body’s expenditure, they are stored as fat – just like carbohydrates.

So how much protein does the average person need? This depends on several factors, including one’s activity level. Ac-cording the University of Arizona’s, Win-ning Edge: Nutrition for Fitness & Sport Workshop 2004 Handout, a sedentary person needs approximately 0.36 grams per pound of body weight per day. A rec-reational runner and or weightlifter’s needs are about the same. A moderate intensity runner needs about 0.54 grams whereas an elite female endurance athlete will need between 0.53 and 0.63 grams per pound. Her male counterpart will need 0.63-0.72 grams. The serious body-builder needs between 0.68 and 0.81.

Therefore, you can see that you don’t need to drastically supplement your pro-tein intake to build strength and mass. And remember, since your body can only use 14 to 21 grams of protein from each serv-ing, it is best to spread out your protein consumption over the day, eating small yet frequent servings.

In addition to being a book review, this article is also a compilation of Dr. Lipton’s additional experiments and findings as reported in eight hours of

lectures. These were published in 2008 in CD format and are entitled “The Wisdom of Your Cells (How Your Beliefs Control Your Biology).”

Dr. Bruce Lipton is an internationally recognized authority in who bridges sci-ence and spirit. A biologist by training, he taught cell biology at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine, and later performed pioneering studies at Stanford University.

His breakthrough research on the cell membrane in 1977 made him a pioneer in the new science of epigenetics—literally “above genetics,” or the study of heritable changes in gene function that occur without a change in the DNA function. Dr. Lipton is a pioneer in this new frontier of science that gives us

astonishing evidence about how our thoughts and beliefs control the destiny of our living bodies.

Even at the cellular level, Dr. Lipton found that we possess an innate intelli-gence that is far more crucial to shaping our lives than even our genes. He began his research at a time when biologists believed in the “central dogma,” which taught that we as humans are like organic machines, a bundle of chemical reactions at the mercy of our own DNA.

However, this new science of epigenet-ics moves on beyond the old mechanistic model of life. He draws upon insights from quantum physics, and engages in an honest re-examination of long-held biological “truths” which turn out not to be so true. Lipton unveils a revolutionary vision of life-science that illuminates the hidden connections between biology, psychology and spirituality.

Clearly understandable by the layper-son, his writing takes you on a journey into the world under the microscope, through the history of evolution and into the subtle realms of your own conscious-ness. He writes with an elegant clarity and with great enthusiasm for what he is discovering. Step by step he examines the dance between mind and matter that creates our daily life. He is eager to get the word out about the profound implica-tions that this new science has for both the future of our species and for our own personal lives; so he continues to research and lecture.

The old idea is that the fate of our cells is controlled by our genes. When scien-tists were doing research on DNA, they were throwing away half of the cell, the protein half, and concentrating only on the DNA half. They were also dismissing the membrane that holds the cell together, as just a do-nothing sack. The old idea is that we are pre-programmed physically, therefore we are a victim of the DNA we inherited.

The new idea of epigenetics is that the fate of our cells is controlled by their environment. Our thoughts and beliefs are a big part of this “environment.” We see ourselves as a single person but we’re actually a community of 50 trillion cells, sort of like a skin-covered Petri dish. Every cell has its own individual life, its own purpose, its own respiration, diges-tion and elimination system. Therefore, health occurs when we have a harmonic community of cells working together, in constant dialog, receiving the nutrition they need, kept safe from toxins, bacteria and viruses by the immune system and receiving healthy “signals” in the form of thoughts, emotions and beliefs. The old central dogma completely left out the role of the environment.

Dr. Lipton found through his experi-ments that the structure and function of every cell is tied together. Every living or-ganism has a cell membrane which turns out to be an information processor. The cell membrane is a liquid crystal semi-conductor, the brain of the cell (mem-brane). It’s an interface. It reads what’s go-ing on in its world. Our perceptions about

ourselves and our world are signals which impact the cell membrane (the interface) and they have a great deal to do with the health of the cell. However, not all of our perceptions are accurate; but the mis-perceptions adjust our biology, just as the correct perceptions do. The genes inside the cell (and the all-important protein) merely respond to the perceptions. This is the power of the new biology: we can control our perceptions.

Since we live in an energy universe, everything has a vibrational frequency. We as humans are generators and recipi-ents of waves of energy. Conventional medi-cine uses this knowl-edge every day. For example, a mammo-gram is a vibrational energy diagram. Waves are energy, which with perception or inten-tion become particles, which are matter. The observer creates the reality. We all collec-tively create the world we live in through our observations and the resulting perceptions. Our “mentation” (thoughts) shapes the field, as it is re-ferred to by quantum physicists. And out of the “field of all possibilities” comes our reality, inside our bodies and in our daily life.

All our lives we’ve been gathering beliefs. A belief is just a thought you keep thinking until you’ve convinced yourself of its validity. Once it is programmed into your subconscious mind, it runs a big part of your life. We can’t run our lives using only our conscious mind. The conscious mind can process only about 40 bits of data per second. The subconscious mind can process 40 million bits of data per second. At least 95% of our daily thoughts come from our subconscious mind. So if you’re programmed with thoughts like, “I’m always sick,” then that becomes your reality. And the scary part is that scientists believe that 70% of our daily thoughts are repetitive and negative, coming straight from our subconscious mind, our pro-grammed mind.

So how do we rewrite the programs in our subconscious mind and change the tapes? Dr. Lipton believes that there are two ways to do this. Clinical hypnother-apy is one, and energy psychology (EFT, Psych-K, and TFT) is the other. Hypnosis can override existing subconscious pro-grams, and energy psychology (acupres-sure) uses quantum mechanics, which employs energy fields which are more powerful than the programming. This ap-proach recognizes that the two minds are different from each other, and also recog-nizes that your thoughts go into your body,

into your subconscious mind and also out into the field of all possibilities, to affect your life.

This new understand-ing is freeing, revolution-ary and so very excit-ing. Dr. Lipton has been researching and writing on these subjects for 30 years, yet he isn’t the only scientist interested in the possibilities of this new way of looking at life. A book entitled The Genie in your Genes by

Dawson Church is another title which can explain the concept of epigenetics. Also, a search on Google for epigenetics brings up dozens of research studies. We are now beginning to realize the power of our thoughts and beliefs, so finally we can let go of the old idea that our genes control our destiny.

We all know someone who has had heart disease, stroke, or diabetes. These are the health threats re-lated to metabolic syndrome--a cluster of common disorders occurring at the same time that include

any combination of obesity, elevated blood pressure, high cho-lesterol, and insulin resistance. New research has proven that it isn’t just a genetic problem and that symptoms can be reversed through lifestyle changes. Two things can be changed without prescription drugs: Weight and Insulin Resistance. Making these changes can prevent the development of serious diseases related to metabolic syndrome and improve quality of life.

Let’s talk about weight and its measurement, because healthy weight is the most effective way to improve health and quality of life. According to the US Center for Disease Control, ap-proximately 62% of the adult US population is classified as “overweight” (based on their body mass index or BMI) and half

of those are obese. BMI is the measure of a person’s weight in kilograms divided by their height in meters squared. Normal BMI is 18.5-24.9%, Overweight is 25-29.9% and Obese is 30% and over. To calculate your BMI you can use this website at the US Centers for Disease Control: www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/index.htm.

New studies indicate that being overweight increases your risk for several diseases and most recently, even some cancers are linked with a BMI of 25% or more. Weight management is the best way to improve your health and protect against many diseases. Fad diets are generally unsuccessful, while lifestyle programs have the greatest success. The best weight management programs are lifestyle programs that people can stick with in the short term and maintain for the rest of their lives.

Insulin resistance is a condition where the blood sugars are elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. At least 54 million Americans between the ages of 40 and 70 have insulin resistance; of those, 11 percent went on to develop type II diabetes. Insulin resistance is a symptom that occurs to our bod-ies over time from the abuse of eating high glycemic foods that spike our blood sugars. We often think of only desserts, cookies and candies or foods with high sugar content that will spike our blood sugars, however, potatoes, white flour and pasta will also cause our blood sugars to spike. As with anything, what goes up must come down and it is the same with our blood sugars. It is the “highs and lows” of blood sugars that cause damage to our arteries, pancreas and metabolism. Have you ever experienced difficulty losing weight? It could be related to insulin resistance and how your body metabolizes foods or calories.

There is good news! Studies have also shown that diabetes can be prevented or delayed in those with insulin resistance through weight loss and exercise up to an astounding 58 percent! The key is finding a weight management program that helps you make lifelong changes to your eating habits and educating your-self about low glycemic foods. In 1981, Dr. Jenkins introduced the concept of the glycemic index (GI). It is defined as “the rate blood sugar rises following the ingestion of a particular test food to that of a standard food usually white bread and glucose.” It was originally thought that glucose elevated the blood sugar the most rapidly, however, as more testing was done it was found that other foods actually elevated the blood sugars more rapidly than glucose. For example, glucose has a GI of 100, table sugar is 61, cherries are 22 and mashed potatoes are 92. So, what can you do? Look for foods with low GI values that release sugars more slowly into the bloodstream. Also, look for whole grains, whole foods (foods in their natural state), fiber content and foods that are not highly processed. These elements and ingredients impact the absorption rate.

There is a testing service in Australia that determines these values to foods and their website has valuable information: www.diabetes.com.au:80/about.php?regionID=160&page=glycemic_index_testing.

Lifestyle Changes Proven to Reverse

Metabolic SyndromeBy Liz Karger and Cheryl Yamamoto

A recent clinical study completed at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) has confirmed that lifestyle changes, involving diet, supplemen-tation and exercise, can improve metabolic syndrome. Overseen by Holly Wyatt, a physician and fac-ulty member of UCD’s Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, in 12 weeks the study’s participants achieved 6-8% drop in blood pressure, significant improvement in insulin and glucose test results, 5% decrease in total cho-lesterol, and an average weight loss of 12 pounds – a healthy one pound per week. They used a 12-week internet-based lifestyle program called Healthy for Life developed by Dr. Ray Strand. According to Dr. Wyatt, “The shifts in dietary habits to calorically restricted low-glycemic meals and the modest increases in physical activity were not only effective but also are realis-tic behavioral changes many people can make.” Lifestyle diets should in-clude low-glycemic foods, nutritional supplementation, moderate exercise, to achieve realistic steady weight loss followed by a realistic maintenance program.

Metabolic Syndrome left uncon-trolled can lead to many life-threaten-ing diseases; however, through lifestyle changes you can prevent it.

HEALTH BRIEF

The front entryway to your home is called the Mouth of Chi because it is the place where nourishing

energy enters your home. Even if you normally use a different door, you should make it a point to use your front door at least once a week. If you go in and out through the garage or another door, most of the time, the chi around the front door will get stale.

Here are some ways to increase the en-ergy around your Mouth of Chi:

Turn on the exterior light beside or over the front door for a few hours every evening, which will help to attract chi to your home and keep the energy strong.

• Make sure that your doormat is clean, that your doorbell works, and that any metal features such as a brass knocker or house numbers are polished and shiny.

• Increase the interior lighting in a dark entryway; make sure to turn it on for at least a couple of hours every day.

• Potted plants beside the front door, especially blooming varieties, are a good way to enhance this area.

• Anything that gets in the way of the front door is a Feng Shui no-no, so please don’t use the space behind or around it as a storage area no matter how conve-nient it may seem.

*A wind chime hung beside the front door or at the top of your porch steps will help to disperse any negative or overly strong chi before it hits your front door.

In last month’s article we ex-amined the anima and animus. The anima is the feminine side of a man’s personality, symbol-ized in his dreams by female

figures. The animus is the mascu-line side of a woman’s personal-ity, symbolized in her dreams by male figures. Because the anima and animus arise from a deeper level of the psyche than that of the ego, persona, and shadow, they often serve as guides to the spiritual core of the personality. For example, a woman is more likely to be led by a male dream figure on a heroic journey into the unknown, whereas a man is more likely to embark on such a journey with a female companion as his inspiration and guide. This archetypal (instinctual) dynamic is frequently reflected in fairy tales, movies, and mythology. In this article we turn our attention to the driving force and goal behind life’s heroic journey–the Self.

The Self is the regulating center of the total personality, conscious and unconscious. It is the archetype of wholeness and the force of creativity, integration, healing, and love within the psyche. Through symbolic imagery, the Self is able to unite opposing elements of the personality creating a perspective that is more than the sum of its parts. It is, thus, the source of our dreams and of the enduring themes and patterns reflected in human history and culture. It is sometimes referred to as the Imago Dei, or “image of God,” in the psyche.

Because the Self is the center and foundation of the total personality, it is often experienced as a transpersonal force transcending the limited viewpoint of the ego (conscious mind). From the perspective of Jungian psychology, the relationship of the ego to the Self is the primary factor influencing a person’s spiritual and psychological well-being. When our ego works in the service of the Self, our personality unfolds and develops in a more natural fashion. We feel connected to life and human-ity, and the energy, creativity and innate wisdom of the psyche flows through us. On the other hand, when the ego sets itself

up as the center of the psyche (ego-centricity), we trip over our own short-sightedness. We may begin to feel empty, disconnected from life, and uncreative. In dreams the Self is often symbolized by images which evoke a sense of wholeness and the union of opposites–e.g., of light and dark, conscious and unconscious, masculine and femi-nine. Examples include the images of Christ and Buddha, or various mandala figures such as a cross, square, circle, or sphere. Other symbols of the Self are illustrated in the following dreams.

A woman dreams: “Large, beautiful snowflakes containing intricate designs come floating down from the sky.” Dreams need not be long to say a lot, or to have a profound effect upon the dreamer. This short dream combines themes of beauty, indi-viduality, and a union of heaven (the sky) and earth. It provided the dreamer a sense of peace amid a period of upheaval in her outer life. The dream illustrates the role

of the Self in bringing balance and a healing perspective to the conscious personality.

A dreamer dreams: “I see a round table with a beautiful lace tablecloth set with intricate silver place settings–round bowls and plates. It is either set for 4 or 8.” In this dream we encounter several motifs of the Self: the round table, plates and bowls, and the intricate tablecloth are mandala-like objects. In addition, silver, a symbol of the feminine, can also symbolize the Self. (Rare and enduring objects–diamonds, gems, gold, platinum, etc.–represent that which is precious and eternal within the psyche.) Finally, the number 4 is a symbol of whole-ness, as can be any multiple of four.* This dream is inviting the dreamer to come to the Self for nourishment. It underscores the psychological truth that all genuinely creative energy flows from the Self.

A woman dreams: “I am swimming in a pool that has clear blue water. As I swim, I notice a hole in the bottom. I swim

into it. It goes into a tunnel that seems to be quite long. I then enter a cave. The water is warm. I hear running water, I see in the dim light a waterfall. As I get closer, I see a light from be-hind the waterfall. I hear a voice singing a chant in a language I don’t know. The chant is peaceful, and I feel quite relaxed in the warm water. I am unable to locate the voice. It seems to stay away from me.”

The path to wholeness and “completion” of the personality, what Carl Jung called individuation, involves the deepening awareness and integration of the unconscious personality. It also involves many “deaths” and “births,” the latter perhaps depicted by the dreamer’s passage through the tunnel. The Self is symbolized in this dream by the light, the calming water, and the mesmerizing chant. Like the Self, they draw the dreamer to the deeper reaches of her own psyche, and thus, towards her larger being.

A man dreams: “I am on a trip in the woods. I set up a camp-site along a river on high ground. I put up my tent, which is round. I build a fire. A large owl sits in a tree nearby. It watches me intently as I prepare some food. As I eat, the owl watches. I hear a voice. I see no one in the area. The voice states, ‘I would like some of your food.’ I realize the voice is coming from the owl. I invite the owl to join me, and it does so.”

The owl is often associated with wisdom. In some Native American cultures it is also considered an omen of death. Both associations may derive from the owl’s ability to see and hunt at night. Symbolically, an owl sees into the unknown, the unconscious, the “spirit world.” This unique gift makes it an excellent symbol of the Self, for the Self knows both the visible and hidden aspects of our being. In the dream the owl asks the dreamer for some food. The message for the dreamer, as well as for ourselves, is that the gifts of the Self require effort and sacrifice in order to be realized. The more attention we give to the Self, and the richer the dialogue with it, the more we receive in return.

Have you fed your owl today?

In next month’s article we look at the meanings of animals in our dreams.

NOTE: The number 4 is also a symbol of the feminine, and the number 3 of the masculine. Mathematical combinations of three and four, such as the numbers 7 and 12, can also serve as symbols of wholeness for they represent the union of 3 and 4. The number 40 is somewhat unique for it is frequently used as a symbol of personal and spiritual trial.

Clean, fresh water should be part of any solid nutri-tion program.

Water is the most essential nutrient in our diet, yet it is the one that is the most overlooked by doctors and nutritionists.

Water is the building block of life. It is the most fundamental nutrient in our body and it plays a vital role in every bodily function, including: circulation, breathing, digestion, brain activity and growth. Water is crucial for controlling body temperature, lubrication and purify-ing toxins from each cell in your body.

Our bodies are composed of approxi-mately 70% water. Blood is 83% water, our lungs are 75% water, and even bones are 22% water. The body constantly maintains this remarkable balance so well that even a 2% drop in the percentage of water in the body can cause fatigue, and a 10% drop in the percentage can result in death.

The quality of water that we put into our bodies is vitally important. If over 70% of our body is water and we continu-ally replace the water that makes up our body, then we should make sure that it’s the highest quality water that we can get. Today the cleanest type of water we can get is steam-distilled water.

The body does not need the stray chemicals that are generally found in tap water. That is one of the reasons why drinking steam-distilled water, which is free of virtually all contaminants, is so important. Stray chemicals can cause side reactions which can be harmful or even

fatal. Therefore both the quantity and the quality of the water that we drink determine the quality of our tissues and organs and their performance, as well as their resistance to disease.

What is distillation? Webster’s Dictionary defines

distillation as “the process of heat-ing a mixture and condensing the resulting vapor to produce a more nearly pure substance”.

Distilled water is water that has been heated to the boiling point so that the water becomes steam and is separated from the impurities. The steam is then condensed back into pure high quality water. The impurities remain as residue in the boiling chamber to be flushed.

The distillation process removes vir-tually all biological, organic, inorganic and radioactive contaminants. Distilled water contains virtually no solids, min-erals or trace elements. Distilled water is 99.99% pure; it is clean, natural and healthy. Steam distilled water is the stan-dard by which all other types of water are measured.

Why use distilled water? Distillation is the single most effective

method of water purification and can be used throughout the world on all types of incoming water. Unlike other treat-ment methods, such as carbon filters and reverse osmosis, distillation is effective on virtually all contaminants and is not dependent on water pressure, water tem-perature, pH, or chlorine and it can even be used on water containing bacteria and parasites and still produce safe, 99.99% pure water.

Pure distilled water can be used for all consumable needs, or anything that goes into your body. Whether we consume ice cubes, soup, coffee, tea, pasta, rice,

baby formula, juices, Kool-Aid®, or just drinking water, the cleanest water should be used. The contaminants pres-ent in all water find their way into our bodies, causing many potential problems. Distillation removes the water from these contaminants, which makes it healthy and safe to use as an overall source of water.

Distilled water is used for more than just drinking water. Laboratories use it for analytical research and utensil wash-ing. The medical community uses it for sterilization, medical procedures, health treatment solutions and in food prepara-tion. The pharmaceutical community uses it for process water, laboratory ex-periments and as a base component for certain medicines.

What about the minerals in water?

Various minerals are essential for the proper functioning of the heart and the rest of your body. A very important point to remember is that the minerals must be in a form that the body can readily assimilate and use. The minerals that are found in tap water are in an inorganic form, which are poorly assimilated by the body. They are a result of the water dissolving the minerals from the rocks and soil that it comes in contact with on its way to our homes.

Minerals in water are often inter-mingled with contaminants that are not beneficial to us. For example: lead, mer-cury, arsenic, solvents, pesticides, phar-maceutical drugs, herbicides, and other chemicals or biological contaminants can be harmful, and in many cases become fatal to the human body.

You’ve just received a great mas-sage. Now what? A massage isn’t over when the masseuse leaves the

room. Here are some tips that will extend the benefits of your massage beyond the treatment room.• Take a minute to collect yourself when the therapist leaves the room. Relish this time. • Let your head clear, drink some water and ground yourself before leaving your practitioner’s place of business.• Use caution when getting off the table. Not only might your balance be skewed a bit, but your feet, if covered with massage oil, might slip on a slick floor. • Take your time getting dressed. Allow an extra few seconds to make sure you’ve remembered everything. • Don’t feel embarrassed to ask your practitioner for help if you need it. Your fingers might be a little fumbly.

After a very relaxing experience where you find yourself in another zone, it may be best to take some time and appreciate that space, even for the rest of the day. You will probably find that you are not able to work out or move as quickly as usual for a few hours. But after a short period of feeling slowed down, many people experience increased energy. The amount of deep relaxation you feel depends on the amount of tension you started the massage with, so if you were very uptight and tense then you might need more recovery time than if you were already relaxed and calm.

You may feel a bit sore in the muscles that were especially tight and tense. If this is the case, enjoy a nice warm bath enhanced with 2 cups of Epsom Salt or apple cider vinegar. If you have ques-tions or concerns, feel free to call your practitioner.

After the Massage, Then What?

By Adrienne Hardt, LMT

Drinking water is vital to the detoxifi-cation initiated by massage. During this process, toxins are released from your soft tissues and drinking water aids in their removal; so having a glass of water immediately after your massage is very beneficial and important. One half ounce per pound of body weight is considered ideal to start, with a minimum of 64 ounces (8 glasses) throughout the day, especially after a massage. Alcohol is not recommended because it dehydrates the body and because your tissues can absorb alcohol more easily after your massage.

You will also probably notice the absence of long-term aches and pains ac-quired from chronic tension or repetitive activity. People also report better energy, heightened awareness and greater pro-ductivity which can last for days. Anxiety and mental fatigue can be reduced for several days as well. Since toxins are re-leased from your soft tissues you may also feel sore in the muscles that were the most tense. This soreness can last for a couple of days but usually is not as uncomfort-able as the tension it replaces.

People from all walks of life know that therapeutic mas-sage yields many benefits. Health conscious people regularly utilize and enjoy these benefits. The body is rejuvenated with the “systematic and scientific manipu-

lation of the soft tissue” – which can be equally stimulating as well as relaxing.

It is of little surprise that our face, which is also comprised of muscles and joints like the rest of the body, would benefit from massage as well. Stress is reflected in the face as muscles tighten. Ever clench your teeth, squint, scowl or rub your tired brow? Unconsciously, we contort our face and creases appear across the surface of the skin as cares of the day intensify. Over the course of time, the tension in our face results in unsightly lines as well as painful headaches, jaw grinding and sleeplessness.

Fortunately, relief is readily available in Chinese facial massage.

This ancient modality has been modified more recently by Chinese Doctor, Lily Fu, who incorporates 16 pressure points (including two on the hands). Lolita Knight, Licensed Massage Therapist with almost 30 years of experience in health facilita-tion, teaches Dr. Fu’s facial massage technique throughout the US and abroad. (Ms. Knight is known internationally for her pioneering in the field of Fijian massage.)

The pressure points employed in Chinese facial massage stimulate the lymph drainage system, removing excessive fluids and releasing waste products. Circulation is also increased by a Honey Pat treatment following the massage. A Honey Pat treatment is the process of applying honey to the face using a systematic rolling technique. The result is increased skin tone, reduced appearance of lines and wrinkles as well as reduced muscle tension.

Clients who have received the massage and Honey Pat treat-ment frequently remark on the smoothness of their skin. Honey, Nature’s own “miracle elixir,” embodies many properties that are helpful to the skin. It is a natural humectant – it has the ability to attract and retain moisture (especially advantageous in our

dry Northern Nevada climate); it is an antimicrobial agent – it inhibits bacterial growth making it useful for the treatment of minor acne flare-ups. Of special interest, honey has significant antioxidant properties, which help protect the skin from the damage of UV rays.

Not only is a Chinese facial relaxing, it is beneficial for facial tics, Bell’s Palsy, eye droop, sinus problems and scars. Special massage can be incorporated for clients suffering from TMJ, to reduce jaw pain and increase mobility.

Chinese facial massage can be experienced alone or incor-porated into a full body massage.

With relaxed facial muscles, less tension, improved skin tone and texture in less than 30 minutes, the Chinese facial massage and Honey Pat treatment are a “sweet deal.”

Dental disease affects sexuality in many ways, from the loss of energy from bad root canals, to diseases of the reproductive organs secondary to dental infection or

poor dental materials. Your biological dentist is a powerful ally in the maintenance of great sexuality.

Gilda Radner (“Roseanne Roseannadanna” of Saturday Night Live fame) includes a description of her fight with ovar-ian cancer in her autobiography. She recalls how much pain she experienced during cancer therapy and castigated the doctors who put her through the surgeries and chemotherapy, but fondly remembered the skill of her dentist and the lack of pain during her 15 root canal procedures. Could these dead teeth have caused, or contributed to, her cancer and death? Interesting question.

Root canals are very controversial in biological dentistry and alternative medicine circles, both here and abroad. In Germany and Switzerland, if you wish to be treated at some of the most advanced biological medicine clinics for any chronic illness, you will see the dentist before the doctor and have all of your silver/mercury amalgam fillings removed as well as any root canal teeth.

Many German and U.S. biological dentists feel that it is impossible to have a non-infected root canal tooth. Once the nerve is drilled out there are still about three miles of dental tubules in the tooth containing bacteria, which mutate into a smaller and more virulent form. These bacteria can then migrate from the root of the tooth into the bone and cause infections,

called cavitations, which produce some of the most toxic poisons-including mercaptans, thioethers and others. Professor Boyd Haley, Ph.D., Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kentucky, routinely measures these toxins with brilliant new testing procedures that he invented, and goes further to show their deleterious effects on key enzymes in the body which control energy production. Some liken root canal teeth to having a corpse in the basement chronically poisoning the system. Of additional concern, is the fact that some dental authorities estimate that as many as 80% of root canals are poorly done in the first place, some missing one or two roots. Modern endodontists have high-tech equipment including computer-augmented x-rays and high-resolution microscopes with various color filters to find all of the roots and determine what kind of disease is present. Many older endodontists don’t have this equipment and miss filling the teeth completely, giving rise to more opportunity for chronic infection.

Remedial treatments for root canals include extraction with a generous clean-out of the infected socket or re-treatment of the root canal with Biocalyx, a compound that swells out into the tubules and seals them off to prevent chronic infection. Injection therapy next to the tooth with German isopathic remedies, procaine, homeopathics and ozone are also help-ful, especially to save a threatened tooth before root canal or extraction becomes necessary.

Homeopathy is also important for some patients who have very weak teeth and many recurrent dental problems. These patients may have problems with absorption and utilization of minerals. Mercury represents another serious area of contro-versy in dental health. Silver-colored dental fillings are actually one-half mercury. Recent studies from the University of Alberta have shown that mercury amalgams are not inert (locked into the filling) and that mercury escapes into the rest of the body, especially with heat, chewing or being placed next to a gold or other metal restoration. They are no longer allowed in Sweden and cannot be used during pregnancy in Germany, Austria and Canada because the mercury goes directly into the fetus. Mercury is a very toxic metal and is a health risk for everyone. Mercury toxicity is definitely not sexy. So if your dentist insists on placing mercury fillings in you or your fam-

Distilled Water... Your Purest Choice

Continued from page 29...

What makes the best water to use? • Distillation is the single-most effective water treatment method. A well-designed distiller will remove 99.99% of the contaminants present in our water.• Distillation is the only method that collects the pure steam. The steam rises from the boiling water, leaving virtually all contaminants behind. The steam is then cooled and condensed into pure water. • Distillation offers absolute peace of mind. The distillation process is not limited by the quality of the source water. It will consistently produce high quality water, regardless of the con-taminants present in the source water, something that no other water treatment process can honestly claim. • Distillation is recommended by many top doctors and nu-tritionists and it is endorsed in books such as “Fit for Life; Fit for Life 2; Optimum Sports Nutrition’ Nutrition for Endurance; Prescription for Nutritional Healing; Pure Water Now: It’s time for action,” and many other health and nutrition books. • Distillation duplicates Mother Nature’s hydrologic cycle, na-ture’s primary method of providing pure water on our planet.

Not all lasers are created equal. There are different lasers for different cosmetic and aesthetic purposes. Some of the various procedures that use lasers are: hair reduction and removal; vascular treatments, such

as spider vein removal, reducing roseacea, and other vascular lesions; wart removal; acne treatment; collagen stimulations and skin resurfacing.

Hair Removal There are basically two main types of medical devices used

for hair removal. The first is a true LASER, or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. There are many different strengths and wavelengths of lasers. One that is often used for hair removal is the Nd:YAG, which uses 1064 nanometers of wavelength. Its primary target is hemoglobin, but it does have a small affinity for melanin (color pigment in skin).

The other popular hair removal option is an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) machine. The IPL machine primarily targets melanin. In hair removal, both medical devices target the hair and fol-licle in the active hair growth phase of the hair growth cycle. This is because in this stage, the hair has a root attached and when the root is attached, the area around the hair is filled with blood. The 1064 Nd:YAG attacks the blood supply and stops it, thus stopping the supply of nutrients to the follicle and it dies. The IPL machine actually heats the pigment of color in the root itself and destroys the hair follicle. Both are reliable forms of hair removal.

With hair removal, several treatments will need to be done to get rid of all hair. Two weeks after treatment, the hair disappears. Whatever hair wasn’t destroyed will grow back in four weeks. Treatments are usually six weeks apart. While side effects are rare, some may have a swollen appearance to the follicle after treatment, but it’s usually gone within minutes.

Vascular TreatmentsIn the land of veins and vascular lesions, the 1064 Nd:YAG

is the machine of choice because it targets hemoglobin. The IPL machine works equally well on collagen stimulations, but because it targets pigment in the skin, it can burn off sun spots or sun damage. A trained and licensed person should always form your treatments, as skin could easily be burned with both machines but more so with the IPL machine.

The other choice of laser for sun spots and damage, scars, wrinkles, etc. is the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, which is losing popularity due to recovery time, the Erbium:YAG laser (which produces energy that is better absorbed by the skin that a CO2 laser, and the fractional laser. These lasers are classed as ablative lasers, which means their wavelength is such that they peel off

the top layers of skin to mid-dermal level or more. These lasers are usually run by licensed professionals.

In vascular treatments, including spider vein removal, re-covery time is quicker than traditional surgical methods of vein removal. The chance of complications is less, and the procedure is well-tolerated by most patients. Many of the unsightly veins can be removed with one treatment, but some may need two or more to completely clear the veins.

Wart RemovalWhen it comes to warts, there are several methods for

removal. Keratolysis removes surface skin cells with salicylic acid, blistering agents, or formaldehyde. Cryosurgery freezes the wart with liquid nitrogen, which causes the wart and sur-rounding skin to fall off. Laser treatments destroy the small blood vessels that nourish the wart and keep it alive, which causes the wart to fall off.

Three types of lasers are typically used to remove warts. A pulsed dye laser (PDL), carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, or Nd:YAG laser. Nd:YAG lasers are an effective way of removing warts because they target the dilated blood vessels at the base of the wart and effectively destroy the virus and disinfecting the surrounding tissue.

In most cases, warts that are treated with lasers are perma-nently removed after only one treatment. Laser treatment, in contrast to surgical removal, causes no scarring and generally requires no anesthesia. This makes it particularly suitable for the treatment of children with warts.

Acne TreatmentLasers treat acne by delivering light through the skin’s sur-

face, triggering the body’s natural bacteria fighting defenses. These defenses kill the problem causing bacteria and reduce the severity of current and future breakouts. Fractional (or Fraxel®) lasers have the potency of ablative treatments but the gentle safety of non-ablative lasers. Fraxel® Laser treatments also trigger the body’s natural production of new collagen and skin cells, which leaves the skin looking younger and fresher.

Nd:YAG lasers are also used to treat acne and work the same way as Fraxel lasers do. They use a high power laser that penetrates the skin and targets the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with acne. This bacteria releases molecules called porphyrins, which when exposed to a certain wavelength of light (the laser beam), increase in number until they destroy the bacteria.

With laser acne treatments, a high power laser penetrates the skin, targeting and destroying the bacteria that produce the inflammation associated with acne. The laser also gently

vaporizes any scars so that undamaged skin below is revealed. Unlike many other techniques used to treat acne and scars, laser resurfacing is gentle, and complete recovery is achieved within days.

Collagen StimulationUnfortunately, we can’t stop time,

which is why everyone gets fine lines and wrinkles. While we may not be able to stop time, we can use today’s technol-ogy to slow it down a little. As the skin gets older, the cells get thinner and are less elastic. Laser resurfacing uses a laser beam to gently vaporize a thin layer of the skin’s surface. The heat from the laser energy also stimulates the production of new collagen in the dermis. The overall result is that new smoother and tighter skin forms.

Unlike traditional treatments such as dermabrasion (removing skin by abrasion) and chemical peels (removing the skin by using chemicals), the unique characteris-tics of lasers mean that your doctor can have much more accurate and precise control over the treatment, especially how deep the laser penetrates your skin. The Nd:YAG laser is commonly used in collagen stimulation and remodeling be-cause it penetrates to the collagen layer in the skin to heat and stimulate new growth. The result is tighter skin due to new collagen.

For laser collagen remodeling, there is no immediate sign that a treatment has been done. Laser resurfacing vaporizes a thin layer of skin, and some patients describe it feeling like a sunburn or be-ing snapped with a rubber band. Since laser collagen remodeling stimulates new collagen to grow, many treatments will be needed to maintain growth.

Laser Therapy TodayWhile it seems that using a laser on

skin would be painful, there are many cooling treatments used to prevent any discomfort. There are four types of epidermal cooling: clear gel, contact cooling, cryogen spray, and air cooling. Air cooling is the most natural way of cooling and works by forcing freezing air to the area. The many technological advances prove that using lasers today are safe alternatives to the traditional treatments of yesterday.

Of the more than 100 elements found in nature, four (oxy-gen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen) make up 96 per-

cent of the body’s weight. The elements comprising the remaining 4 percent are collectively referred to as minerals.

There are 22 minerals essential to the healthy functioning of our bodies. Seven of these are found in relatively high con-centrations in the body and are referred to as “macrominerals.” Taken together, the dietary requirement of these 22 minerals is only about 200 milligrams per day, the size of a pea or a small pill.

Minerals play far more important roles in the body than the quantities of each might indicate. They are essential components of vitamins, enzymes and hormones and are in-volved in a multitude of bodily processes, rang-ing from the formation of bone and teeth to the regulation of the heart muscle. Deficiencies of certain minerals or an excess of others may play a role in the development of cardiovas-cular disease, diabetes, hypertension and cancer.

One of these “macrominerals” is mag-nesium. Let’s see what it does.

Magnesium is the fourth most abun-dant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. Approximately 50% of to-tal body magnesium is found in bone. The other half is found predominantly inside cells of body tissues and organs. Although only 1% of magnesium is found in blood, the body works very hard to keep blood levels of magnesium constant.

Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, sup-ports a healthy immune system and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis.

There is increased interest in the role of magnesium in preventing and managing

disorders such as hyper-tension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Several studies sug-gest that magnesium supplementation may improve clinical out-comes in individuals with coronary disease.

In one of these studies, the effect of magnesium supplementation on exer-cise tolerance, exercise-induced chest pain, and quality of life was examined in 187 patients. Patients received either a placebo or a supplement providing 365 milligrams of magnesium citrate twice daily for 6 months. At the end of the study period researchers found that magnesium therapy significantly increased magne-sium levels. Patients receiving magnesium had a 14 percent improvement in exercise duration as compared to no change in the placebo group. Those receiving magne-sium were also less likely to experience

exercise-induced chest pain.

In another study, 50 men and women with stable coronary disease were given either a placebo or a magnesium supple-ment that provided 342 mg of magne-sium oxide twice daily. After 6 months, those who received the oral magnesium supplement were found to have improved exercise tolerance.

Both food and supplementation are sources of magnesium. Green vegetables, such as spinach, are great sources of magnesium because the center of the chlorophyll molecule (which gives green vegetables their color) contains magne-sium. Some legumes (beans and peas), nuts and seeds, and whole, unrefined grains are also good sources of magne-sium. Refined grains are generally low in magnesium because when white flour is refined and processed, the magnesium-rich germ and bran are removed.

Oral magnesium supplements can be solid or liquid. Solid magnesium supple-ments combine magnesium with another substance such as a salt. Examples of magnesium supplements include mag-nesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium carbonate.

The amount of elemental magnesium in a compound and its bioavailability influ-ence the effectiveness of the magnesium supplement. Elemental magnesium refers to the amount of magnesium in each com-pound. Bioavailability refers to the amount of magnesium in food, medications, and supplements that is absorbed in the intes-tines and ultimately available for biological activity in your cells and tissues.

Now you can find the best way to provide your body with the magnesium it needs for optimum health. It could be with diet alone, supplementation alone or a combination of the two.

HEALTH BRIEF

In the midst of summer, now is the perfect time to become a LOCAVORE!

If you have never heard this word before, no worries; it is a relatively new term used to describe a person who only eats food grown locally or within a certain radius. This new movement encourages people to support their local economy by supporting local farmers.

Not only does being a locavore mean helping your local economy, but you can help protect our planet. The aver-age food product purchased at your local grocery store travels an average of 1,500 miles to reach you. Sticking to lo-cal produce cuts down on your carbon footprint and keeps money local.

Be a Locavore!

There are many ways to do this. Local farmer’s markets are a great and easy way to buy locally. You do not have to jump to buying 100% local; start out by choosing 5 items that you know can easily be purchased locally.

Make sure you ask questions and take the time to find out where your local supermarket gets its produce and other products. Signing up for a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, like the Great Basin Com-munity Food Co-op, is another terrific way to tap into your local produce com-munity.

As of May 19, 2008, 14 birds, nine mos-quito pools and two chicken flocks tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) in

California. Southern California currently has the most WNV activity; however WNV-posi-tive dead birds were detected in Sacramento County and Santa Clara County.

In 2007, there were no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Nevada or Placer counties, but there were 380 human cases throughout California, 21 of which were fatal, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The easiest way to protect yourself from West Nile virus is to avoid contact with potential car-riers, i.e., mosquitoes, which inhabit sources of standing water. In the Lake Tahoe region, water sources are drying up well, though more mosquito activity is expected with additional storm waters and warmer temperatures.

Swimming pools, ponds and standing water in residential areas are also potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This threat is increas-ing as the rate of foreclosures rises. To treat swimming pools, Environmental Management places methoprene briquettes (a natural insect hormone which prevents mosquitoes from thriving) into the water.

Mosquito fish are another way to treat water that may be providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes on your property.

If you are spending time outside, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is now recommend-ing a new insect repellent (IR3535). This repel-lent can be found in Avon’s Skin-so-Soft and Bullfrog Mosquito Coast products. The CDC recommends this product for individuals who are at moderate risk of mosquito bites and sug-gests they apply it every one to two hours.

Many people wonder, “How can I possibly get my laundry clean and sanitized without soap, bleach and hot water? And why should I care?”

Here are the details: By taking the cold water supply normally hooked up to an existing residential washing machine and redirecting it to an adjacent reactor chamber, cold “tap water” is pretreated (see below), before entering the machine tub. How is that cold water changed to clean clothes better and in an environmentally friendly way?

• The water rushes through a Radiant Catalytic Ionization Cell, incorporating two high intensity UV lamps exposing a hydrated quad-metallic target.• A photocatalytic reaction takes place, producing six of nature’s most effec-tive and safe cleaning oxidative gases: oxygen, ozone, ozonide ions, hydro peroxides, silver ions, super oxide ions, hydroxides and natural enzymes. • These advanced oxidizers are injected and become entrained in the water to break down oils and grime and disinfect the fabric; they work best with cold water during the wash cycle. • Pure oxygen aeration creates an effervescent cleaning action similar to club soda’s cleaning action where escaping gases further release grime and stains from fabrics. • During the last rinse cycle, silver ions are again injected for a final clean-ing disinfection. The need for soap and fabric softener is removed as old detergent residue is washed out.

Silver Ions (AG+) and Nano Technology:• AG+ ions are added to the oxidized water solution through electrolysis to provide silver’s unique bactericide ability. • These silver ions will also be trapped in the fabric to provide ongoing protection against odor-causing bacteria. Imagine 400 billion silver ions dis-solved in water to make a super cleaning solution that affects your clothes at an almost molecular level. • Nano Technology deals with minute molecular and atomic particles that can easily penetrate the cells of microorganisms and deliver a proven 99.9999% kill rate.

The environmental impact of such new laundry technology: • Eliminates an estimated 333 BILLION GALLONS a year of dirty, polluted, chemically laden waste water. • Saves energy and reduces the pollution generated to manufacture de-tergents. • Saves fuel & cuts the exhaust emissions required to deliver products.• Removes the tremendous waste packaging left after using the estimated 6 billion dollars of detergent in the U.S. each year. Beware of Phthalates

Phthalates: Consider what you put on your child’s body & your own...

Here’s a good parlor question: “Anyone know what a phthalate is?” Three years ago, the answer would have been short. “What in the world are you talking about?” Well like so many other new words we battle with, you might as well get used to this one. You’re going to be hearing a lot about phthalates in the years to come.

Phthalates are a group of man-made chemicals that virtually all of us are exposed to everyday. They are used in plastics to keep them soft. So, every time you drink water from a plastic water bottle, you are also drinking the phthalates that have leaked out of the plastic. The same is true for foods wrapped or packed in soft plastic wraps. The “new car smell” that you smell in a new car is partly from the pungent odor of phthalates leaking out into the air so you can breathe them. And recent research is now showing that another way to get phthalates into your body is through creams and lotions that come in plastic containers. This fact has grave implications for our children.

Researchers at the Division of General Pediatrics, at the University of Washington in Seattle just published a study that shows how serious the problem is. They were curious about the many phthalates that are in the plastic bottles containing the creams and lotions that mothers use on their infants. They wanted to know if the phthalates were able to leak out from the bottles into the lotions and then find their way into the babies’ systems. What they found out was not reassuring.

They selected 163 infants between the ages of 2 months and 28 months who were born in Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Columbia, Mo between 2000-2005. They examined the babies’ urine for nine differ-ent phthalate metabolites. All of the babies, every single one, had detectable amounts

of at least one type of phthalate. And when they specifically looked at babies who had been exposed to the products within the previous 24 hours, they found that more than 80% of them had seven or more types. The highest levels were found in babies exposed to the most products.

And it looks like certain products are more to blame than others. The levels in babies exposed to lotion, shampoo and powder were more than four times higher than babies who did not use those particular products. No link was found to baby wipes or to diaper creams. The high-est levels were found in babies who were exposed to lotions, who were younger than nine months.

The researchers concluded that, “Phthalate exposure is widespread and variable in infants. Infant exposure to lo-tion, powder, and shampoo were signifi-cantly associated with increased urinary concentrations of monoethyl phthalate, monomethyl phthalate, and monoisobutyl phthalate, and associations increased with the number of products used. This associa-tion was strongest in young infants, who may be more vulnerable to developmental and reproductive toxicity of phthalates given their immature metabolic system capability and increased dosage per unit

body surface area.” Those are sobering words for 100% of all babies!

Previous research in animals and hu-mans suggests that early exposure to some phthalates could reduce testosterone and alter reproductive organs, particularly in males. The three phthalate compounds found in the highest concentrations in babies in the study were linked to reduced testosterone in a 2006 study of newborns in Denmark.

Many scientists are concerned that such changes in hormones could lead to fertility problems and male reproductive disorders when these children grow up. Another potential consequence of high phthalate levels is premature breast de-velopment in young girls.

But the problem extends beyond prod-ucts that babies are exposed to directly. What about exposure to phthalates while they are still in the womb, or during breast feeding? The phthalates dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) produced dramatic changes in male sexual characteristics when the exposure took place in utero. And these exposures were at levels that were much lower than what had previously been thought to be a concern.

These chickpea burgers are outstanding: tender, a tiny bit crumbly, delicious with salsa fresca and avocado or ched-

dar, lettuce and tomato placed in your favorite wrap or bun. Add some fresh yogurt sauce by blending plain yogurt, lemon juice, and a clove of mashed garlic, and you’re in veggie burger heaven! Ingredients:2 15-oz cans chickpeas OR 1 15 oz can chickpeas and 4 cups un-shelled fresh chickpeas 1 cup chopped yellow onion 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1 cup fresh breadbrumbs juice from 1/2 lemon 2 eggs salt fresh ground pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil

Place chickpeas in a food processor, along with the onion, cilantro, and lem-

on. If you are using the fresh chickpeas (which will taste absolutely amazing and are well worth the extra work!), shell them, and steam for 5-8 minutes. They should be bright green, and break apart easily between your thumb and forefinger. Let cool, and then place in the food processor.

Pulse for 15-30 seconds, until thor-oughly combined. Add breadcrumbs and pulse about five more seconds. Turn out the mash into a bowl, and add salt and pepper to taste. Mix in the two eggs, the batter should be slightly eggy and slick. If it’s very slick, add another 1/4-1/3 cups of breadcrumbs.

Place 1 Tbsp oil into a medium bot-tomed frying pan, and turn head to medium high. Form dough into small patties, and fry in oil for 4 minutes on each side. Turn out onto a plate with a paper towel underneath; allow to sit for 30-60 seconds to absorb excess oil.

Top and enjoy!!

You’ve heard the buzz—raw foodies report boundless ener-gy, immediate weight loss, the clearest eyes, and invincible

immune systems! Raw food includes cooked food that hasn’t been heated above 115 degrees F. Cooking above this temperature destroys important en-zymes that activate digestive processes in the body. Enzymes are present in all raw foods. So you want to join in? Here are 5 tips to living a raw lifestyle; see the online article for more details on each tip.

Tip #1: Start Where You Are: Equipment

Start with a sharp knife and a cutting board, an old-fashioned box grater, a vegetable peeler, and a blender.

Tip #2: Get the White Out • Replace sugar with agave nectar

• Remove white flour

• Eliminate table salt and use either Himalayan or Celtic salt

• Eliminate white rice and substitute quinoa

• Remove dairy and substitute nut milks and nut cheeses

Tip #3: Less is MoreBegin by preparing smaller amounts;

raw food is bulkier, so less is more. The following are great choices.

• Green Vegetables: spinach, kale, chard, broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, and collard greens

• Other Color Vegetables: add a rain-bow of colors such as carrots, beets, tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers, and squash.

• Fruit: Eat lower glycemic fruits like strawberries, cherries, lemons, limes,

and cranberries. Consume moderate amounts of apples and pears.

• Sea Vegetables & Algae: Start with nori and sea palm fronds. Add algae such as spirulina, chlorella and blue-green algae through supplements.

• Fermented Foods: Use apple cider vinegar and eat raw sauerkraut.

• Nuts and Seeds: Use raw, organic ha-zelnuts, pumpkin seeds, and almonds. See Tip #4.

• Oils: Use cold-pressed olive oil, flax seed oil, and coconut oil.

Tip #4: Soak It Up!Most nuts and seeds have enzyme

inhibitors that prevent digestion. Soaking (for 8-12 hours) in water is essential, it starts the sprouting process and removes the enzyme inhibitors. Brazil nuts and hazel nuts can be eaten without soaking because they don’t have any enzyme inhibitors.

Tip #5: Ask Your BodyMany raw foodies report shifts in their

food needs. Honor your body, ask it what it needs, and most of all have fun!

Back two generations ago, very naughty kids got a slap on the rear. One generation ago, they were consigned to a seat in front of the television to keep them mesmerized. Now, it seems, they get a prescription for

antipsychotic medication.

The number of children “diagnosed” with bipolar disorder jumped an astounding 4,000 percent in the nine years between 1994 and 2003, leading to an avalanche of new prescriptions for psychotropic drugs. Now, a new study at the University of London Pharmacy School shows that the prevalence of psychi-atric prescriptions for kids continues to escalate, particularly for hyperactivity and autism – and the problem is far worse in the US than elsewhere. According to the research, six times as many kids in the US take antipsychotic meds as compared to children in Great Britain.

This hardly means that the number of kids on antipsychotic prescriptions in England is a trifle. In fact, since 1992, the num-ber of kids in England taking drugs to control conditions such as behavior problems, autism, and attention deficit disorder has doubled to about seven in every 10,000 children. In the US, the number currently is at about 45 children per 10,000. These drugs all have significant known side effects, ranging from drowsiness to weight gain, to nervous system issues and heart problems. The long-term effects on kids aren’t known, as the drugs haven’t actually been approved for pediatric use – a rather shocking fact. (And of course, these numbers do not include the astonishing six million children in the US on Ritalin.)

The authors of the study voiced concern about the advis-ability of prescribing antipsychotic drugs to kids. “This high-lights the need for long-term safety investigations and ongoing clinical monitoring, particularly if the prescribing rate of these medicines continues to rise,” they wrote.

Nevertheless, it does seem likely that the prescribing rates will continue to rise, given the trends. But why? Do more kids actually need psychotropic drugs than ever before? Are more kids going “nutso” because of the corresponding rise in violent video games, broken families, too much soda pop, or too much mercury in fish?

Or could it be something else, something that has led to a simultaneous, seemingly coincidental increase in the number of pets needing psychiatric drugs? Just last year, Eli Lilly won approval for a new, beef-flavored Prozac pill for troubled dogs

– no joke – and apparently, there have been many takers. Thank goodness all those dogs suffering from separation anxiety now have pharmaceutical help, although some sources claim that the studies leading to the approval of the canine antidepressant, called “Reconcile,” were rigged.

All kidding aside, the important point here is that since both kids and pets have experienced a recent rise in psychiatric prescriptions, that pretty much undermines the theory that kids are going bipolar and ADHD because society is going to Hell. (Pets aren’t affected by societal issues.) In fact, the Lancet, an independent and authoritative voice in global medicine, at-tributes the overabundance of pediatric prescriptions, particu-larly in the US, to an astounding source – “direct-to-consumer ads”–which, it says, “are more common in the States. These ads raise consumer awareness and a concomitant demand for medication.”

This doesn’t mean that environmental and cultural factors aren’t at play. It simply means that there’s a good chance the drug companies have an even greater influence in escalating the number of pediatric prescriptions. And the abundance of

psychotropic prescriptions isn’t exactly making things better. Under the watchful eye of the medical community (and modern psychiatry in particular), teenage suicides are up yet again, and teenage psychotic breakdowns are also on the rise. In spite of all those prescriptions to help control autistic symptoms, the incidence of autism is also rising at an astounding rate, mov-ing from one out of every 2000 kids in the 1980s to one out of every 150 now.

As Dr. David Fassler, a University of Vermont psychiatry pro-fessor, comments, “The more important question is whether or not the right kids are getting the most appropriate and effective treatment possible.” (All things considered, he should probably add “the safest treatment” to his list of qualifiers.) Surely, for some kids, psychiatric prescriptions might be useful, but the risks need to be investigated more thoroughly; diagnoses need to be made with more care and possibly with more restraint; and other avenues of treatment need to be considered.

Protecting Milk from Monsanto

From MOTHER EARTH NEWS, June 2008

Consumer opposition to artificial hormones in milk is rising, but Monsanto just won’t give up. Injecting cows with Monsanto’s genetically en-

gineered rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) is like injecting human athletes with illegal hormones and steroids. It may have a short-term performance-enhancing effect (in the cows’ case, 5 to 15 percent more milk per lactation cycle), but cows treated with rBGH suffer from higher rates of mastitis (inflammation of the udder), birth disorders, hoof problems, diarrhea and other ailments. Because of these concerns, rBGH is prohibited in most industrialized nations, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and all of the European Union members.

The Sun enters Cancer this month on June 20. This marks Summer Solstice. It is the longest day and

the shortest night of the year. Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and it rules the fluid state of life and light. For those of us here in the Sierras, it is the time of maximum snow melt and water runoff. The water element is highly enlivened and energized.

We also need to remember that our bodies are 70 to 80 percent water. Esoteri-cally, water is the physical manifestation of the etheric dimension. This subtle, non-physical dimension is the source of vitality. Water is necessary for life as we know it to exist. Our etheric body inter-penetrates our physical body and feeds it prana, or chi, directly from the life forces emanating from our Sun and the stars. The balanced flow of fluids throughout the body is the physical counterpart of this etheric energy.

On another level, Cancer, and its plan-etary ruler, the Moon, rule the principle of soul. We are beings of body, soul and spirit. Soul is the intermediary between spirit and body. The primary principle of soul is love. The language of love is feeling and emotion. An emphasis on the water element in a person’s natal chart will manifest as strong feelings and emotional tendencies. It is important to understand that love, feelings, and emotions are the expression of cosmic forces and powers. Love is the glue of the universe that holds together the infinite diversity of life.

From a physiological standpoint, Cancer rules the stomach and the diges-tive system. The alimentary canal from the mouth to the anus is a very complex system to break down food and assimilate it into our bodies. The stomach is the primary center for this al-chemical process but the the liver, kidneys, spleen, intestines and other organs play their specialized roles and contribute to the metabolic process. It takes tremendous forces to break down outer nature (food) and transform it into energy for the body.

The ultimate, most refined and pre-cious result of these processes is the blood. Blood is a very special esoteric, spiritual fluid that we will examine in a future ar-ticle. Cancer and the Moon also rule the breasts and the production of mother’s milk. Milk is one of the most important universal nutritional foods in creation. This is also a very special fluid for the manifestation and growth of life.

The Sun in Cancer tends to put pres-sure on the digestive system, especially the stomach. If you were born with the Sun in Cancer or have your ascendant or important planets in this sign, you will tend to have a more sensitive stomach and digestive system. During this time there will be a tendency to overeat and partake of foods that are more difficult to digest. This is also a time when food allergies can become more aggravated. Be conscious about putting too much pressure on your metabolism. Some of the best remedies for digestive problems are peppermint, spearmint, and papaya. These are best

taken in the form of teas. Having a nice cup of hot tea after meals can be soothing and healing. A good basic rule to follow is moderation in all things.

From an outer perspective, Cancer rules nature. All the kingdoms and beings of nature are the objectified manifestation of soul or the Divine Mother. There is a di-rect correspondence between the human soul and outer nature. As we are told by the ancient mystery teachings, nature has been given to us to feed, nurture, and heal ourselves. The healing methodologies of past civilizations were based in a deep and profound understanding of nature. The world provides us with a vast cornucopia of healing remedies for every possible disease and cause of ill health. We are slowly reclaiming this knowledge and will be all the better for it. Some fundamental paradigms of what the human being is and what constitutes health have to change in order to come into right relationship with Cancer and nature.

Infections in the teeth and gums have been linked to many diseases such as:

• High Blood Pressure• Heart Disease• Diabetes• Arthritis• Migraines

There’s nothing worse than expe-riencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution, after it dries the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is placed into the ear opining and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame of top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt, & residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infec-tion) sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

In this series of articles we’ve covered many aspects of Oriental Medicine. The final one will touch on the Oriental bodywork therapies. These

include acupressure, tui na, and medical qigong.

Like all Oriental Medicine disciplines, these bodywork therapies focus on balancing body ener-gies, resulting in increased health and vitality. In

the process, symptoms of pain and illness vanish as the body returns to healthy balance. Although some of these practices have similarities to Western massage techniques, practitioners approach treatments from a somewhat different perspective.

Here is a quick overview of each of these body therapies and how they work:

Acupressure uses the same points as acupuncture, but without the needles. Typically, the acupressure practitioner stimulates points relevant to rebalancing someone’s health one or two at a time for several minutes each. This might happen with a very light touch or a much firmer pressure, depending on the desired effect. Each point gets several minutes of this pressure before moving on to other points.

Some may not want acupuncture because they are afraid of needles. Acupressure may be a suitable alternative. Practi-tioners will often ask if the patient has had acupressure before as acupressure can actually be more uncomfortable than acupuncture because it involves pressing and holding tender areas of the body.

Tui na is similar to acupressure, but goes beyond it by including more rubbing and manipulation techniques. There are 13 primary techniques in tui na. The name itself means “pressing and grasping” and these techniques include “mo” (rubbing with the palms), “dian” (pressing with the fingers), “rou” (kneading), “pok” (striking the body with cupped hand) and “ca” (rolling muscles and skin).

In general, tui na removes blockages to energy flow, in-creases circulation of qi and blood, helps realign and mobilize joints, heals soft tissue injuries, adjusts internal organs and regulates nerves.

It is very effective for musculoskeletal issues and even deep organ problems. One popular use for the technique is dislodging stuck phlegm during or after a cold by using the technique of striking the back with a cupped hand. This creates enough of a deep, penetrating vibration to dislodge the stuck phlegm.

Medical qigong is a form of direct energy work. The prac-titioner first senses energy imbalances in the body, looking for either blockages or weaknesses. They then use their hands to rebalance these problems.

The appearance of the process looks a bit like someone waving their hands over the patient. The patient typically experiences a level of deep relaxation and a pleasant tingling sensation as the energy in their body begins flowing more naturally once more.

All three of these techniques work very well together, al-though not every practitioner trains in all three of them. In fact, most people tend to specialize in only one of them.

Every nutrition label you see contains the phrase, “based on a 2,000 calorie daily diet.” It is the Recommended Daily Intake, the amount of calories a person should consume in a day, according to the Food and Drug Administration. This

amount of calories provides energy for your basic bodily functions and your routine activities throughout the day.

The calories that a person burns to maintain their basic bodily functioning is called their basal metabolic rate (BMR). A person’s BMR varies depending on their age, gender, genetics, and other factors. However, an average person between the ages of 20 and 30 will burn 1,350 calories in a 24-hour period without moving a muscle.

The remaining 650 calories that a person consumes are used for routine functions. This means that if you are consuming more than that 650 calories a day, but you’re not engaging in additional activity, you’re likely to gain weight. Luckily, all you have to do is walk!

Walking can be measured on an intensity scale from 1 to 10. Household chores, such as walking around the house and standing while you fold clothes would rate as a 1, while uphill hiking would be closer to a 10. At a slow, casual pace, a person burns roughly 100 calories for every mile that they walk. According to thewalkingsite.com, “the average person’s stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile...a sedentary person may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day.” Walking at an intensity rate of a 2 or a 3 the entire day is easier to maintain than exhausting yourself for a couple of hours. At such a simple increase, all a person would need to do is walk a half-step faster throughout the day, burning 50 extra calories in your daily routine and 1.5-3 times as many calories for every mile that you walk throughout the day.

These simple changes, in conjunction with monitoring your daily calorie intake, can help you achieve your summer weight loss goals.

In some ways your body and your car have similar characteristics. One of these similarities is the fact that when parts move, they need to be greased.

Moving parts need to be stopped from rubbing together in order to eliminate friction and heat build up which contrib-utes to deterioration and destruction. To protect your car you use motor oil. In your body you use synovial fluid (body grease). The basic ingredient in the creation of synovial fluid is hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) may very well be the single most important compound in the structure of the human body. Hy-aluronic acid is one type of glycosamino-glycan (GAG). GAGs contain sulfur, chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride (in cartilage and ligaments), keratin sulfate (in carti-lage, bone, and cornea), dermatan sulfate (in skin, tendons, lungs, blood vessels and heart valves), and heparin sulfate (in cell membranes). The largest concentration of HA is found in the vitreous humor (in-terior fluid) of the eye, the synovial fluid around articulating joints and in between the cells of the body.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occur-ring compound made by all cells. Present in every tissue, it performs many impor-tant functions. HA helps deliver nutrients to cells and carry toxins from cells that

do not have a blood supply, such as those found in cartilage. HA not only keeps the cartilage that cushions joints strong and flexible, but also helps increase supplies of joint-lubricating synovial fluid. With-out adequate amounts of HA, the joints will become brittle and deteriorate.

Joints are lubricated by synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid is a primary component of synovial fluid. It functions as a lubri-cant, much like oil is used to lubricate moving parts in a machine. In the human body, hyaluronic acid helps to grease all membranes (the membranes around the heart, lungs, muscles and eyes) and the cartilage of joints.

Not only does it keep joints lubricated, but hyaluronic acid also encourages water retention in other bodily tissues to prevent dehydration. It is found in large concentrations in the extracellular matrix, the fluid-filled space between cells. HA locks moisture into the matrix, keeping collagen and elastin moist, promoting a youthful appearance.

Hyaluronic acid is a primary com-ponent of healthy skin, with about 50% of the HA contained in the skin matrix. Declining skin levels of hyaluronic acid are associated with dryness, reduced flex-ibility, and wrinkles. Clinical studies have shown that HA also helps wounds heal more quickly, and can reduce the appear-ance of both old and new scars. Injectible hyaluronic acid, such as Restylane, is being used to lessen the appearance of lines, wrinkles, sagging and depressions in the skin caused by acne scars or injury, though some people have reactions to the injectable form.

Hyaluronic acid is now believed to play a functional role in the formation of new body tissue, providing the organiz-ing matrix around which new connective tissue is built. In essence, hyaluronic acid acts as a template upon which new tissue

can be formed. A single molecule of HA, which may be quite long, can attach to hundreds of other structural protein mol-ecules (amino acids), thereby assisting in the body’s building, replacement and repair functions.

Hyaluronic acid does not replace other structural support nutrients such as dietary protein, glucosamine, chondroi-tin, MSM, sulfur, vitamin C, omega 3 fatty acid, cetyl myristoleate or bioflavonoids. These and other structural nutrients are very important because they attach to HA to produce the finished product.

The stimulus for cells to make hy-aluronic acid can come from a variety of metabolic signals such as the body responding to an increased need for struc-tural support due to physical stress. Thus, exercise is one way to help stimulate HA production. Cells throughout the body make HA as part of the natural repair and recovery process. However, the cellular creation of hyaluronic acid is inhibited by magnesium deficiency and the release of hormones created through stress.

Studies show improvement for most hyaluronic acid users after 2 to 4 months of oral supplementation. There are no serious side effects associated with oral HA. So, gear up your exercise regime, get your diet in order, take a good hyaluronic acid supplement and become a well-oiled machine.

The sun is out and the water is moving fast! Take advantage of this fun and exciting time of year and experience a one of a kind

adventure: white water rafting. You do not have to travel too far for an adrenaline-pumping weekend. Here are a few places to check out around nearby California.

South Fork of the America River: This section of the American river is located in Coloma, CA in El Dorado County. This is a mellow route and is perfect for beginners, but popular for white water veterans. You can choose to take the half-, full- or two-day trip, all of which promise amazing views and some thrilling rapids.

Middle Fork of the American River: This route is a great alternative to the sometimes crowded South Fork area. It is located in nearby Auburn, CA in Placer County and is the perfect trip for a more fit and active person. Like the South Fork trip, you can choose the length of time you want to take. This section can be traveled in 1-3 days. It flows through steep, rugged canyons within the Tahoe National Forest into the Auburn State Recreation Area. One of the benefits of choosing a 2 or 3 day trip is having the chance to enjoy the beauty of this river in a more leisurely way. Between the

17-23 miles from Greenwood Bridge to Mammoth Bar, there is a wonderful hike up the American Canyon to some incred-ible waterfalls.

Lower Klamath River: If you are look-ing for the perfect family weekend, this may be it. This route begins in Happy Camp, CA and you may take 2 or 3 days for the trip. Another smooth route, you traverse through a series of small moun-tain ranges named the Siskiyous, Salmon, Marble Mountains, Scott Bar Mountains and the Trinity Alps, collectively known as the Klamath Mountains. Thirty-five miles before it reaches the Pacific Ocean, the Klamath turns to the northwest and cuts through the Pacific Coast Range, one of only three rivers on the west coast that does so. With fun rapids such as Rattle-snake and Dragon’s Tooth, plus large sandy beaches for camping and play, this is an ideal multi-day trip for families and first timers.

Don’t forget that Tahoe and Truckee are home to some great white water routes. You do not have to travel far to experience the exhilarating rush that rafting offers. Visit www.whitewatertours.com for more information on these routes and many others!

Hypnosis Manufacturers do not list phthalate

ingredients on labels, so we do not know which products contain them. But accord-ing to spokesmen for the industry, they are very rarely used in children’s products. So where are the kids getting them? The answer is that phthalates are probably coming from the plastic containers that the products come in. Previous studies have already shown that children absorb phthalates from sucking on plastic pacifiers, baby bottle nipples, and soft vinyl toys. A recently passed California law will ban the use of six types of phthalates in children’s toys and feeding products, be-ginning next year. But no federal or state law in the United States prohibits phthalate use in personal care products or cosmetics.

And why are children whose mothers don’t use the products still showing up with exposures? Probably from eating them. Per-haps breast feeding from mothers who drink liquids or eat foods stored in plastic wraps, or who are using phthalate-containing skin lotions, creams or hair products. Or maybe they are getting them directly from foods packed or stored in plastic wraps. Anything’s possible, because these prod-ucts are everywhere. This study is the first to clearly show how easily phthalates can be absorbed through the skin, so watch for more updates about phthalates.

What to do about Phthalates?Try to avoid the following:

1. Nail polish: Dibutyl phthalate is used to make nail polish chip-resistant. Look for it on the ingredients list--it may be shortened to DBP.

2. Plastics in the kitchen: Phthalates may be more likely to leach out of plastic when it’s heated, so avoid cooking or microwav-ing in plastic. 3. Vinyl toys: Phthalates make vinyl (PVC) toys soft, so don’t give them to children. Opt instead for wooden and other phthalate-free toys, especially during that age when they put everything in their mouths! 4. Paint: Paints and hobby products may contain phthalates as solvents. Paint some-where well-ventilated. 5. Fragrance: Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is often used as part of the “fragrance” in some products. Since DEP won’t be listed separately, use products that don’t have the word “fragrance” on the ingredients list. 6. Vinyl: Vinyl is everywhere: lawn furniture; garden hoses; building materials; and items of clothing (like some raincoats). Try switch-ing to a non-vinyl shower curtain. That “new shower curtain” smell is a result of chemical off-gassing, meaning your shower curtain is a source of phthalates in your home. 7. Air Fresheners: Just like fragrances in personal care products, most air fresheners contain phthalates.8. Other common phthalates to check for on labels: DNOP (di-n-octyl phthalate); DiNP (diisononyl phthalate); BBzP (benzyl butyl phthalate); DEHP (di 2-ethylhexl phthalate); DiDP (diisodecyl phthalate); DnHP (di-n-hexyl phthalate); DMP (dimethyl phthalate); DnOP (di-n-octylphthalate).Learn More About PhthalatesHere are several Web sites you can visit for more information:

Q. Has West Nile virus caused severe illness or death in horses?

A. Yes, while data suggest that most horses infected with West Nile virus recover, results of investigations indicate that West Nile virus has caused deaths in horses in the United States.

Q. How do the horses become infected with West Nile virus?

A. The same way humans become in-fected, by the bite of infectious mosqui-toes. The virus is located in the mosquito’s salivary glands. When mosquitoes bite or “feed” on the horse, the virus is injected into its blood system. The virus then mul-tiplies and may cause illness. The mosqui-toes become infected when they feed on infected birds or other animals.

Q. How does the virus cause severe ill-ness or death in horses?

A. Following transmission by an infected mosquito, West Nile virus multiplies in the horse’s blood system, crosses the blood brain barrier, and infects the brain. The vi-rus interferes with normal central nervous system functioning and causes inflamma-tion of the brain.

Q.Can I get infected with West Nile virus by caring for an infected horse?

A. West Nile virus is transmitted by infec-tious mosquitoes. There is no documented evidence of person-to-person or animal-to-person transmission of West Nile virus. Normal veterinary infection control pre-cautions should be followed when caring for a horse suspected to have this or any viral infection.

Q. Can a horse infected with West Nile virus infect horses in neighboring stalls?

A. No. There is no documented evidence that West Nile virus is transmitted between horses. However, horses with suspected West Nile virus should be isolated from mosquito bites, if at all possible.

Q. My horse is vaccinated against eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), western equine encephalitis (WEE), and Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE). Will these vac-cines protect my horse against West Nile virus infection?

A. No. EEE, WEE, and VEE belong to an-other family of viruses for which there is no cross-protection.

Q. Can I vaccinate my horse against West Nile virus infection?

A. A West Nile virus vaccine for horses is available through veterinarians. Horse owners throughout the US should consider vaccinating their equines. Consult your

veterinarian for more details on timing of vaccination.

Q. How long will a horse infected with West Nile virus be infectious?

A. We do not know if an infected horse can be infectious (i.e., cause mosquitoes feeding on it to become infected). How-ever, previously published data suggest that the virus is detectable in the blood for only a few days.

Q. What is the treatment for a horse infected with West Nile virus? Should it be destroyed?

A. There is no reason to destroy a horse just because it has been infected with West Nile virus. Data suggest that most horses recover from the infection. Treatment would be supportive and consistent with standard veterinary practices for animals infected with a viral agent.

Q. Where can I get more information on horses and West Nile virus?

A. Visit the USDA Web site Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)- www.aphis.usda.gov/subjects/animal_health/ Reference: www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/qa/wnv_hors-es.htm
