What an excellent event the Autosolo was on Throckmorton Airfield nearPershore. The windy conditions caused a few problems with anchoring the conesdown, but Pete Wood and his team ran an excellent competition. The word musthave got out as 22 entries signed on including Dave Harris from South Africa.

The entries were split into two sections, an Autosolo and a Production CarAutotest, although they all did the same tests. It was planned to do four all forwardtests, each run three times, with only the best two times on each test to count. However with so many competitors taking part for the first time inevitably thingsgot delayed so the last test was abandoned and the third one run four times.

The first run saw four people tied for fastest on 1.05, Matt Harker (Fiesta),Stewart Roberts (Citroen Saxo), Josh Smith (Citroen Saxo) and Kris Box (RenaultClio). On the second run Josh Smith pulled out the stops with some very tidydriving to take a 2 second lead over Kris Box.

Andy Richens’ MkII Escort was going well until the ignition failed in themiddle of the test. Despite working on it for some time it could not be coaxed backinto life and he retired.

In Class D a battle was developing between Dave Cross and his son Simonin their Tiger Avon, both being equal after two runs. After the second test JoshSmith had extended his lead to 6 secs with two more fastest times. Matt Harker wasleading Class A, Julian Gadd was leading Class B in his Mazda MX5 (or rather hiswife’s Mazda MX5 !), Kris Box was leading Class C and in class D Dave Cross hadpulled out 3 secs on Simon.

The last test was run four times with the best three score to countand this was to prove crucial in the final results. With one run left to go Josh Smithhad a healthy 12 second lead, but there were three people tied for second place, MattHarker, Julian Gadd and Kris Box. Kris did the test incorrectly and took amaximum and Julian overdid it and had to reverse in order to miss a cone, handingsecond place to Matt Harker who equalled the fastest time.

It was equally tight further down the order. Dave Harris (Corsa) and GeoffWooldridge (Mazda MX5) were tied in 5th place, but Dave managed to equal FTDon the last run to pip Geoff by 4 secs. In the Cross family battle, Dave had a onesecond advantage but then did a wrong test and handed the class win to son Simon.

In the Production Car Autotest Tom Russell (VW Polo) took victory byjust one second from Martyn Braithwaite in a similar car.

A Superb event which everyone enjoyed

As part of their 60th Anniversary celebrations Cirencester Car Club decided tore-enact their very first rally which took place in 1953. The original event was400 miles in just 18 hours, but this year’s event was a bit more relaxed. Whilststill nearly 400 miles it was spread out over two days with an overnight halt inCaersws near Newtown. In order to relive the spirit of the first event the originalregulations and a few photographs of the competitors were printed in the roadbook. It was primarily an Historic event although modern cars were allowedto compete in a separate class. The entries ranged from a Morris Minor to a 4.2litre E-Type Jaguar and a Healey 3000. Bill Moffatt and Dood Pearce wereentered in Bill’s MG Midget. The route was a Touring Assembly with autotests and regularitysections on private land as the competitive bits. The competitors were flaggedaway from the main square in Cirencester by the Mayor and set off to the firstfour autotests at Winstone. These were all fairly simple forward only grassautotests but some people were already in trouble. Car No.3 was AndrewIsherwood and Hilary Farbowski in a Dellow trials car, but they broke thesteering on the very first test. Not deterred they borrowed a marshall’s car anddrove home to pick up a Caterham so they could continue. The organisersturned a blind eye to this rather late change of vehicle. After two tests Bill and Dood were leading by one second over MartinSaunders/ Sam Field in an immaculate Mk II RS 2000. This lead didn’t last longas the Escort’s limited slip diff and extra power came into play over the next twotests. The route then wound its way via Gloucester, Ledbury (taking inClenchers Mill Ford), Leominster and Ludlow, to the next series of tests atDiddlebury. The E-Type Jaguar drowned out in the ford but they got it goingagain fairly quickly. A Police diversion near Much Wenlock caused someconfusion to those crews who hadn’t plotted the route on the maps. Lunch wastaken at the Inn on the Green at Wentnor after crossing the Long Mynd. Thenext two tests had to be cancelled because of the field being completelywaterlogged. The route then went westwards to Mellington Hall where two regularitysections were set up on the gravel roads around the estate. Bill and Dood usedtheir Le Jog experience to clean the first one and only drop one second on thesecond to close the gap to Saunders/Field in the RS 2000. Crews then proceededto Clun where another diversion was necessary as the ford on the edge of thevillage was too deep.

Page 7: SWMC MAG JULY 2012

By the night halt the Escort crew were leading, just 4 secs ahead of Billand Dood with the third place crew of Ian and Christine Vout some 38 secsfurther adrift in their Audi A4. Keith and Michelle Vaughan were havingignition trouble in their 998 cc Mini and arrived very late for the evening dinner. On the Friday before the event the area around Borth had suffered veryheavy rain which caused considerable flooding and the organisers severeproblems. There were supposed to be controls in Borth and Aberystwyth butboth had to be cancelled due to road closures and an alternative route furtherinland had to be arrowed. The event got back on track at the lunch halt at the Elan Valley VisitorsCentre. It then went east via Rhayader, Leominster and Bromyard to anothercouple of tests at Cheyney Court near Bishops Frome. Martin Saunders musthave been a bit worried as he was seen letting down his rear tyres on the Escortto get some more grip. It had the desired effect as he took 8 secs off Bill andDood to build up a healthy 12 second lead. The Mini of Keith and MichelleVaughan again had problems with the ignition and were forced to retire. The final two tests were held at Chedworth disused airfield on a pieceof tarmac perimeter road, but no one could catch the Escort as he doe-nuttedaround the cones taking another 11 secs off Bill and Dood. The Lotus Esprit ofDave and Adele Sullivan was quick in a straight line but a bit of a handfulspinning around the cones. On the one test the second fastest time was set bythe Morris Minor!! The cars were then assembled for a convoy run back into the centre ofCirencester where the Mayor was on hand to wave the chequered flag. It was anice gesture that the awards were the same cups as had been used on the originalevent back in 1953. The results were quite close and it was interesting to see aMorris Minor beat the Healey 3000. An excellent event despite the weather problemsTop 10 Results1.
