The Marches Batho Rally 26th June 2011

This year the Marches Batho Rally started from Himbleton and was ascatter event. I do not like scatter rallies very much and this was no exception. It was ridiculously difficult. The rally was organised by the Riley Register, partof the VSCC, and started from the Galton Arms. The cars were lined up oneither side of the driveway to Brook House, a lovely Elizabethan house next tothe pub. I was asked to navigate for Bill Feran from Malvern in his 1936 RileySpecial. We finished last years rally on the end of a tow rope but were hopingfor a better result this year. Bill had had the gearbox rebuilt over the winter. The entry list comprised mostly Rileys and Humbers with a scattering of Jowetts.(Can you have a “scattering” of Jowetts?) The route instructions comprised 29 fiendishly difficult sets of instructionsto find the control locations and you had to visit 20. The most difficult or remotelocations attracted more marks, which ranged from 5 to 15 marks. The maxi-mum possible score was 201. As experts we were allowed 10 minutes plotting time, but I think threehours would have been more reasonable! The optimum route was about 60miles and you had three hours before penalties were applied, but this wasassuming you had plotted everything. We set off with only three controls plotted on the map, and I never didmanage to plot all of them. The route was all in the north east corner of map150 so it was a bit like being in my own back yard, but this didn’t help at all.The instructions were also not in any useful order. All in all it was a nightmare.A typical instruction was:- “A crow flying over a power line crosses a railwayand a canal, then 108° to 74, what hangs?” Despite the fact we didn’t knowwhere the instruction started from we actually found this one. We persevered, on the hottest day of the year, and managed to get back tothe finish with 2 minutes to spare, but with less than a third of the controlsvisited. I was les than optimistic of a good result but everyone was havingsimilar problems. Much to our surprise the results showed us 2nd overall andwinners of the major trophy for the best Riley. We also picked up the TeamAward. My driver was well pleased. The winners scored 101 marks and we were on 64, a long way back. I likedifficult navigational rallies but I would not recommend entering this event nextyear unless they make it easier. I would think the novices must have beensuicidal!

Dood.

June 12th was the 50th Anniversary of the MG Midget and the MG OwnersClub had arranged a get together of as many Midgets as possible at BurghleyHouse near Peterborough. Almost 500 cars attended although the car numbers went up to 950. I thinkthe rain put some people off. The displays included the many derivatives suchas the Austin Healey Sprite, the Sebring Sprite and various other hybreds.Several cars had Sierra 5-speed boxes and others had 16 valve Vauxhall engines. There were also some pre-war MG’s as well as a sprinkling of MG A’s and MGB’s (Can you have a “sprinkling of MG’s ?). Dood and Matt Pearce took their cars and Matt’s uncle-in-law took hisMidget. It was a very special occasion, unlikely to be repeated for some time. For Dood and Matt it was a bit nostalgic as Dood won his first National BRally in a Midget navigating for Clive Beechey in 1971. Matt and Dood alsowon the Welsh Historic Rally Championship in a Sprite in 1998. An excellent day, pity about the weather!

Thursday 30 June 2011 - The very best in British designed and engineered electrichigh-performance cars are set to feature this week at the 2011 Goodwood Festival ofSpeed FoS-TECH Exhibition, as the first of a series of public displays this summerby the EEMS Accelerate programme.EEMS Accelerate is presenting four cars which intend not only to challenge thegeneral perceptions of electric vehicles, but also aspire to go that step further, byevoking genuine passion for the future of sustainable motoring - and for the futureof the British motoring industry.Led by energy and climate change consultants AEA, the EEMS Accelerate pro-gramme brings together a consortium of specialist UK manufacturers to design, develop, demonstrate and realise the potential of electric high-performance cars. Thecars - which are also now on the roads undertaking 12 months of "real-life" road testsas part of the Technology Strategy Board's £25m Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demon-strator competition - are the Delta E-4 Coupe, Ecotricity's Nemesis, the ElectricLightning GT and the Westfield Sport-E.The EEMS Accelerate consortium manufacturers will be participating at the Good-wood Festival of Speed as part of the FoS-TECH Exhibition, which aims to show-case a variety of exciting new technologies from motor manufacturers, designspecialists and other motor industry suppliers. The featured technology has a strongemphasis on future environmentally-considerate motoring; as well as ecologically-advanced concept vehicles, exhibits include ideas or realisations which showcasehow the automotive world is pioneering new technology to meet future requirementsand legislation.Last year's Goodwood Festival of Speed attracted no fewer than 154,000 visitorsover the three-day weekend; in the hope of similar numbers in 2011, the EEMSAcccelerate vehicles are aiming to wow the crowds with their stunning good looks, exciting, innovative technology and incredible torque capabilities, as a selection ofthe cars tackle the famous Goodwood Hillclimb twice a day, as part of the LowEmissions Hillclimb Class.Commenting ahead of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Director of AEA EuropeRobert Bell said: "The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an iconic event, famous theworld over and it is a great honour for the EEMS Accelerate programme to be a partof the FoS-TECH display.

"This is the first of a series of events where we hope to highlight four electric vehiclemanufacturers who are pioneering the future of UK manufactured electric high-performance cars, which represent green, sustainable, cutting-edge technology.

"Challenging perceptions about how electric vehicles should look and drive, theEEMS Accelerate cars are stylish, dynamic and innovative, pushing technologyboundaries for batteries, motors and chassis design."For further information:

Three of the UK’s most promising young rally drivers enjoyed an exclusive testin an IRC championship-winning Škoda Fabia Super 2000 on the forest rallystage at Goodwood today (Monday 4th July). Thanks to a tie up between the Motor Sports Association (MSA) and Škoda UK,Team UK drivers Elfyn Evans, Harry Hunt and John MacCrone were able to gaintheir first experiences of a Super 2000 rally car, as well as spending time with theteam’s engineers and star driver Andreas Mikkelsen. The young Brits clocked up more than 20 kilometers each on the dusty 1.1 milestage at Goodwood, which had been sponsored by Škoda UK for the duration ofthis weekend’s Festival of Speed.

“It’s been an extremely valuable experience for the drivers and they have all got ahuge amount out of it,” said Robert Reid, MSA Performance Director. “The guyshave had the opportunity to see a leading team in action first hand, to drive thecar, to speak with Andreas and the engineers, and to see how a manufacturer’srallying programme forms part of their wider marketing and promotional activity.

“We must give great credit to Škoda UK for making this event possible; they arestrong supporters of rallying in this country and perhaps they don’t get therecognition they deserve. We have been talking with them for some months aboutthis kind of initiative as it works well for both sides. Our drivers get to experiencea leading rally car and showcase their skills, while Škoda UK can look atpromising young talent coming through the ranks and further underline theircommitment to UK motor sport. It’s been a great success.”Driver comments:Elfyn Evans: “It was unbelievable! Compared to my Group N car, every inputyou make has an effect. It is so sharp and responsive, the way it stops and turnsin and the feedback from the wheel is excellent. We then looked at the data fromthe car and compared my trace to see where I was losing or gaining time. Thatwas really useful for me as we don’t have the capacity to undertake that kind ofanalysis on my car.”

10Harry Hunt: “The car was amazing. It’s very physical to drive and there’s no restin there – it was pretty hard work. Even on the straights, the car was movingabout and sliding on the gravel, so there’s no down time behind the wheel. I onlyhave limited four wheel drive experience and learning the stage at the same timewas a challenge, but the whole event has been a fantastic experience.”John MacCrone: “If this is what you get in the end, then all the hard work isworth it! The car is so nimble and it does everything you ask of it. You can steerit on the throttle and flick it one way and the other. The four wheel drive takes abit of getting used to, but I was surprised how easy it was to get in the car anddrive it reasonably quickly straight away.”

The Motor Sports Association (MSA) has appointed the BritishAutomobile Racing Club (BARC) as the promoter of the MSA British HillClimb Championship and Hill Climb Leaders Championship for a periodof five years from 1 January 2012.The appointment follows an open tender process that was launched bythe MSA earlier this year. BARC will take over from SpeedChampionships Ltd, which has run both Hill Climb championshipssuccessfully for many years.BARC Chief Executive, Dennis Carter, said: “We are delighted to havebeen given this opportunity. We have been involved in hill climbing formore years than I can imagine, and of course operated the hill climbs atGurston Down and Harewood Hill.

“When Tony Fletcher first suggested that we should apply to run thechampionships when he decided to retire we were flattered to say theleast; Tony has done a great job in keeping the championships strongand healthy and will be a hard act to follow.”MSA General Secretary, Rob Jones, said: “The MSA was delighted byBARC’s interest and we are confident that the championships willflourish under fresh management. We must thank SpeedChampionships’ Tony Fletcher for his great contribution to thechampionships’ ongoing success, and would like it noted that he hasbeen involved in their organisation for over 50 years.”

Like the opening round of the British series at Lydden in March, the event was aqualifying round of both the British and Belgian championships, and the six-carA final grid was split equally between British and Benelux competitors.

Scott made a great start to the main event and chased Coox until being forcedto slow by power-steering failure. “I tried to hold on but my arms are shot; it’s nota good place to be without power steering,” said Scott, who ultimately finishedthird.

TURNED OUT NICE AGAIN

In 1972, an enthusiastic young stockbroker - advised by a Rolls-Royceowning friend that he hadn't made it until he owned a Rolls-Royce -acquired a 1950 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith for the princely sum of £3,400 -his total annual bonus. But "he had made it" in every way.Unaware of the provenance of the car, in 1989 he commissioned a thoroughrestoration of the car and, at the same time, looked into the history of the carthrough the services of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club.Imagine his delight when he found out that the first owner of this JamesYoung bodied limousine was his childhood hero, George Formby.George had trained to be a jockey but, when his entertainer father died in1921, the 16-year-old Formby took to the stage, with limited success. In1923 came two major changes: into his act came a ukulele, to distract fromhis nerves, and into his love life came the redoubtable Beryl Ingram. Whenthey married, she gave up her own stage career to manage his and hisamazing success was counterbalanced by the absolute control she had overhis life.By the 1930s, he was Britain's biggest celebrity, making records and films;between 1933 and 1946, he made no fewer than 20 films. This was earninghim £100,000 a year (when a family doctor earned around £1,000 a year)and it delivered all the material possessions - yachts, houses, racehorses and,of course, motor cars.Always in the background was Beryl: the yachts were all called "Lady Beryl"and the delivery note for this lovely Silver Wraith shows the address inFairhaven, near Blackpool, with the house name "Beryldene". Over theyears, George and Beryl owned no fewer than 26 Rolls-Royce and Bentleymotor cars. By comparison, Edward, Prince of Wales, owned just 11 carsfrom these marques.

"Aside from Formby, there were just two other owners, before the currentowner bought the car in 1972" said Philip Jones of Byron International, whohave been commissioned to market the car on behalf of its current owner.

"With just four owners in 60 years and the restoration 20 years ago costingover £80,000, this is a good car. With the added provenance of GeorgeFormby, it is exceptional."
