Vibration means “a recurrent change of position”. Vibra-tions are movements where the recurrent changes of position occurring at equal intervals of time give them

the character of waves whose amplitude is very small. The force of gravity on any object (including the human body) can be increased by adding more mass or by increasing accelera-tion. Good examples of the acceleration phenomenon are rid-ing in an elevator or jumping out of a moving vehicle. Mass x Acceleration = force of gravity. Increasing the force of gravity and causing a body to adapt to the increased force is “progressive overload”. Progressive overload is a basic strength gaining procedure used in all types of training that also applies to vibration training. Vibration training is simply increasing acceleration instead of increasing mass. Does it work? There is still a discussion amongst a portion of the health and wellness industry. The list of users is criticized, the scientific research is criticized, even the idea of simply trying it is criticized. There appear to be more theo-

What is Vibration Fitness Training?

Our CoverGrapes are featured on this month’s cover to celebrate their wonderful health benefits, as well as October being the peak of this fruit’s harvest. The health benefits of the flavonoids, quercitin and resveratrol found in grapes and wine have long been known - but even more positive information is being discovered. Recent studies highlighting the health benefits of resveratrol show not only reduced risk of stroke, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, but also how it is linked to an overall slowing of the aging process. These compounds are found in the largest quantities in the skins of the grapes and particularly in red wine. Additionally, red wine contains mel-atonin, a natural hormone that promotes restful sleep. Even so, spectacular health benefits are not only attributed to wine, but also to grape juice and the fruit itself. One study showed that after ingesting grape juice patients exhibited increased levels of the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol, as well as lowered lev-els of oxidized-LDL cholesterol. So enjoy the fall harvest and Salute!

ries on why it doesn’t work than research on why it does. The research is overwhelming in favor of why it works; however the research is subject to scrutiny as it is not consistent. Vi-sions of vibrating belts, wooden rollers, vibrating tables all of which we know didn’t work otherwise they would still be in use…right? Then there is the jack-hammer, bumpy road, truck driver arguments which also make sense. The observation that more research is needed is ac-curate. More research needs to be done regarding amplitude, frequency, and exercise protocol. There are several vibration machines on the market, some are questionable; most equip-ment available to the public is designed to operate well within the safe limits of all current research. Like the research that has been done, results vary between individuals. Similar varia-tions occur in all forms of physical activities. Vibration train-ing is not for everyone just like running is not for everyone. The number of people that may benefit from vibration training includes a large part of the population that cannot do other activities. The best part of vibration training is the tremendous time reduction for an effective workout. The most surprising thing about vibration training is how strenuous it can become for those individuals looking to make big gains in their physi-cal condition. The most pleasant part is how a person feels after a workout no matter what level they are training at.The best way to discover if vibration training is for you is to try an introductory session. Experience is more informative than discussion. Future articles will cover the effect of vibration on the elderly, osteoporosis, the 85% of Americans who do not exer-cise, vibration in athletics, and the future of Vibration training within the health and fitness Industry. When you mention audible sound as a healing modality to most people they will think of Tibet-

an singing bowls, chanting or toning, the use of bells or the Mozart Effect. These therapies have a long history and there are many reports of therapeutic results. They are limited, however, in the range of frequencies that can be produced and precision of application. According to Dr. Richard Gerber, the author of “Vibrational Medicine” we are now in the first pioneering stages of “Einstein Medi-cine”. This, of course, refers to the famous equa-tion E=MC2 giving us the relationship between matter and energy. Dr. Gerber further states that in the next few years we will see great advances in Einstein Medicine. Healing energy is expressed as a frequency. The traditional frequency heal-ing modalities include light, color, sound, homeopathy and Bach flower essences. Because this is a pioneering field many people are still a little skeptical about energy frequencies as healing agents. Our society has traditionally put most of its emphasis on the use of matter (such as chemicals in the form of drugs) as a primary healing modality. Today people are be-coming increasingly aware of problems from side effects of a therapeutic approach limited to the use of matter. Fortunately, the energy therapeutic modalities have not exhibited many detrimental side effects. Since the early 1960’s great advances have been made in England in the use of audible sound for healing. The out-standing pioneer in this field is Dr. Manners. By combining five frequencies of sound, a three-dimensional wave front is produced. This combination of frequencies is called a com-mutation. Each cell system within the body has an innate fre-quency for a healthy condition. Unhealthy cells have lost their healthy sound frequency and are, so to speak, singing out of tune. When the frequencies of health are played, cells will en-train to this frequency. This is like two tuning forks of the same frequency. When one fork is struck and begins to vibrate, the second tuning fork will entrain and also vibrate. When cells begin to vibrate to the frequency of health, they will gradu-

ally begin to return to health, and the body therefore heals itself. It can be thought of as

a process of reminding the body how to be healthy. This theory of sound can be applied to the body through use of a machine that generates the appropriate frequency combinations and an applicator that is

basically a small loudspeaker on a handle which can be held directly against the body.

The current technology has a repertoire of about 600 commutations. This technological

advance is two-fold; firstly the identification of the proper frequency combinations to use for the vari-

ous cell systems of the body, and secondly the development of equipment for the application of the frequencies to the body. A typical treatment includes a sequence of commuta-tions selected to treat all aspects of the particular condition. As an example, for a sprain the commutations would include swelling, inflammation, connective tissue, ligaments, pain al-leviation, tissue damage, scar tissue reduction and cell regen-eration. Using this therapy, traumatic injuries have been found to heal without any scar tissue, and old injuries have been successfully treated to reduce existing scar tissue. Dr. Manners claims that all kinds of physical and mental conditions can be treated in this way. The length of a course of treatment will vary directly with the time the condition has existed. An injury which occurred within a week or two of treatment can be successfully treated with several sessions, while a chronic condition of long standing will require a more extensive series of treatments. In many years of work in England, Europe and Japan there have been no observed detrimental side effects. This technology can also be used to reduce wrinkles in skin and tighten sagging muscles, resulting in an “acoustic face lift”. Several very interesting case studies have been reported involving the treatment of leg injuries in racehorses. For ex-ample, the traditional treatments for a torn leg tendon involve 6 to 24 months of work, if treatment can even be attempted. By using acoustic therapy, tendons have healed in 43 days with no scar tissue, and horses with this type of injury have been able to return to racing. During the 45 or so years that this therapy has been prac-ticed in England only a small handful of therapists have prac-ticed in this country. With the advent about 2 years ago, of an American company manufacturing the equipment, combined with the availability of training, this exciting new therapy is beginning to grow in this country.

Although most scent-ed geraniums have small pink or white

flowers, their foliage fur-nishes the fragrance. The leaves hold their scent even after they are dried or dead, and the leaf texture varies from furry, to sticky, to smooth. Scent-ed geraniums generally grow to 3 feet tall. Every year, the International Herb Association (www.iherb.org) designates the Herb of the Year, with the scented geranium winning the honor for 2006. The IHA began celebrating the Herb of the Year in 1995 as a way of promoting the use of herbs through growing, pro-cessing, landscaping, craft, culinary and medicinal uses. The word Pelargonium comes from the Greek ageranos, meaning crane, and pelargos, meaning stork; after which theplant is named, with it long seeds which bear a resemblance to a bird’s beak. Although commonly called geraniums, pelargoniums are easily recognized by their blossom structure. For the scented geraniums you planted in the ground, take a cutting to bring

i n d o o r s . They flourish best in full sun and prefer loamy soil that is well drained, rich in magnesium and slightly acidic. They can be propagated from seeds and stem cuttings, and they tend to root very easily. These cuttings can be rooted in a jar or vase filled with water, allowing the water to cover the nodes from the removed leaves. Don’t forget to change the water frequently, and place the cuttings in bright light. These wonderful plants are often de-scribed as living potpourri for the home. They are not grown for their flowers, but for their spicy, fruity, floral and other food fragrances produced by their deep-ly cut, often silvery leaves. The scent is contained in the small beads of oil pro-duced in the glands at the base ofthe leaf hairs. Bruising or crushing the leaves breaks the beads and thus the plant releases its scent. More than 50 rose-scented gera-niums are available, and many have a rose-lemon scent. As its name sug-gests, ‘Attar of Rose’ has a strong rose scent and small lavender flowers. Some other rose-scented geraniums include: ‘Atomic Snowflake’ with gold and green variegated leaves, ‘Clorinda’ with bright green, round-lobed leaves, ‘Both’s Snowflake’ with cream and gray green variegated leaves, ‘Snowflake Rose’ with large cream variegated leaves, and ‘Can-dy Dancer’ with ferny leaves and laven-der flowers. Native to South Africa, India, Aus-tralia and New Zealand, this herb was

extremely popular until 1914, when World War I began and the English government banned the use of fuel for greenhouses, thus limiting the availability of the scented geranium. It was Thomas

Jefferson who planted several vari-eties at the White House, and since

the 1830’s they became increasingly more popular.

Medicinal Uses

Scented Geranium is not one of the huge medicinal plants of the herb world, but it can be used safely for

a few minorailments. The main medicinal property seems to be as an astringent, making a good choice for herbal facials and baths. Make a bath by putting leaves and flowers in a mesh bag (or something similar) and hang under the tap water. Make a tea and leave unsweetened for steam facials and to wash the face. Use with caution if you have sensi-tive skin, as in some people the essential oil causes mild rash. It is said that tea can also be used for treatment of stom-ach ulcers, and that steeping the leaves in vinegar, then applying to scalp and forehead will ease headache symptoms. A cup of rose-scented geranium tea is one of the best medicinal teas around. It relaxes the entire nervous and diges-tive system. It is said to be excellent for headaches, stiff muscles, cramps andspasms. To make the tea, pour a cup of boiling water over a 1/4 cup of fresh leaves, stand for 5 minutes, then strain. Sweeten with honey or a lemon slice, if desired.

Studies have shown that moder-ate wine consumption is heart-healthy for the average consum-

er. As more individuals take their health consciousness to a higher level by purchasing organic foods they are also choosing organic wines. Neither a trend nor a fad, organic wines are a common sense approach to growing methods. Organic viticulture starts with the soil. Organic wine practices are free of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. No synthetic fertilizers or chemicals of any kind are used. To maintain active soil the farmer uses several techniques like composting animal manure as a natural fertilizer, planting cover crops instead of herbicides and encouraging natural predators of insect pests instead of using insecticides. A term in organic viticulture is “bio-dynamic.” Biodynamic growing method is a holistic viticulture system of farming and managing natural resources to pro-duce the highest possible crop quality. Viticulture activities take place only at certain times according to the positions of the planets, moon and tides. The pio-neer of biodynamics was Austrian phi-losopher Rudolf Steiner in the 1920’s. A common fallacy among wine consumers is that all organic wines are sulfite free. Sulfite is a natural occurring compound found on most growing plants such as onions, garlic and grapes. Some wines are considered low in sulfites or free of added sulfites but all wines con-tain some amount of sulfites. Contrary to popular belief white wines contain more sulfites than red wines. There are indi-viduals who are considered sulfite sen-sitive and allergic to sulfites. For them, organic wines are a great choice. Ultimately, what wine consumers want to know is how does organic wine taste? The organic viticulture approach

enriches the “terroir”– the taste of the earth – which enlivens the flavor in the wines. Wine producers seek more ex-pression of fruit and terroir. One of the best ways is less chemical interference. Biodynamic wines tend to be stron-ger and more robust than conventional method wines. Many organic and biody-namic wineries recommend decanting to help soften and filter the wines. Filtering is recommended because organic wines do not include fining treatments in the wine making process which leaves sedi-ment in the bottle. Consuming sediment may make the wine taste bitter. Organic wine choices are global in any local wine shop. For instance, the majority of Chilean wines are organic. The geographical borders of Chile are

in near perfect isolation from vine dis-eases and pests. No sprays or chemical treatments are used. Other countries producing organic wines are Argentina, New Zealand, Italy and France. Organic wineries in the U.S. include Washington State, Oregon and California. Need another reason to purchase or-ganic wines? The “less is more” farming practice keeps costs down and ultimate-ly lowers the bottom line price for the wineries…and for the wine consumer!

Say green building and people think of environmentally sound building materials, which are low in volatile or-ganic compounds. Green building is so much more. Giv-

ing consideration to both the environmental and financial cost of building materials is essential. When approaching the design of a new home, take into account where materials come from. Green building means using locally available building materials when possible. If a product has to be shipped and trucked, there most certainly will be a larger environmental cost even if the purchase price is lower. Using locally available materials provides savings to the environment by lowering transportation costs and fuel emissions. Another powerful approach to green building is the use of waste products as building materials. Straw is the waste prod-uct resulting when rice, wheat or oats are harvested. Some of this material is used for animal bedding. However, much of the straw is waste and is burned, producing tons of carbon monoxide each year. Rice farms require a burn every other year to kill off mold that can contaminate rice fields and lower production. By creating a market for rice straw, a signifi-cant portion of the straw can be harvested, leaving less to be burned in the field. Rice straw is a substantial building material with relatively high silica content offering significant R-value (R-value is the measure of a material’s resistance to transferring energy). All

GREENbuilding & SUSTAINABILITY

straw can be used as insulation. Straw bales are used to fill in between load-bearing post and beam structures. A typical 6” wall holds fiberglass insulation rated at R-19; a straw-bale wall can have a value as high as R-50, a substantial difference. As bales, the straw is easy to store and handle. Sheet-goods manufacturers can turn straw into sheet goods for sheathing walls and ceilings prior to applying finished materials.Used tires can be stacked around recycled pipe and back filled with sand and then covered in stucco to create free-form earthen domiciles. This rammed-earth method of build-ing takes advantage of waste products and locally available building materials. Other green building methods include the use of gray-water systems. Gray-water systems are plumbed separately from potable water systems; however, they provide multiple use of the water before it is released back to the environment. Gray water is water from sinks, tubs and showers (not waste water) that is captured and redirected to water landscape and gardens and, where codes allow, for flushing toilets. As you can imagine, the use of gray-water systems can double the us-ability for a given volume of water. Eco-roofs are becoming popular in the northwestern United States. An eco-roof is designed to use an otherwise sterile location to foster life. For a given footprint of any struc-ture, we trade viable garden space for mixed use and living space. Having a green roof means living in balance with na-ture. Consider a parking structure where the roof is planted in native flora. This microenvironment provides a space equal to that, which would otherwise be lost to a typical develop-ment. In residential applications, green roofs provide lower heating and cooling costs by adding a layer of insulation to the roof. The traditional shingled roof is converted to a green roof by removing the existing shingles and installing a waterproof membrane. Sideboards are added to the perimeter to contain a lightweight soil mixture. The fully planted roof slows runoff during downpours, lowering the impact on planting beds and landscaping. Not all building projects allow for such innovative appli-cations as eco-roofs. Many communities require compliance with certain criteria that do not allow for such options. A good place to get started is to choose environmentally sound build-ing products. By designing with locally available materials in mind, and consulting knowledgeable professionals, you can create a low-impact footprint on the planet while building green.

“The use of water in the treatment of dis-ease is as old as the practice of medicine.”– George Knapp Abbott, MD 1945

Hydrotherapy, the use of different temperatures of water for thera-peutic purposes, is an age-old

traditional Naturopathic technique. It has been used for thousands of years, and today Naturopathic Physicians reg-ularly prescribe specific hydrotherapy methods for conditions such as sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, fever, vaginal in-fections, urinary tract infections, as part of detoxification protocols and as a way to stimulate the immune system. The purpose of these techniques is to increase circulation of blood through all the major organs such as the liver, kidneys, and spleen and also organs of digestion and elimination such as the stomach, pancreas and small intestine. It also encourages drainage of toxins from the blood into the lymphatic vessels. Three specific hydrotherapeutics are practically free and can be performed in the privacy of one’s home.

Alternating Hot and Cold Showers

This technique can be done during a normal shower routine, lasting a

little over 10 minutes. Each cycle must begin with 3 minutes hot water (as hot or warm as is tolerable). Then, the water should be switched to a cold tempera-ture (as cool or as cold as tolerable) for 30 seconds. This constitutes one cycle.

Each cycle always begins with hot and always ends with cold. It is best to complete three cycles. Just before the transition from hot to cold and also from cold to hot, it is advisable to focus the stream of water on the area of the body most needing treatment. Examples would be the throat with a sore throat, the chest with bronchitis, the low back with back pain, or the liver during a detoxification protocol. Ideally, one would conduct ev-ery shower this way. At a minimum, one should perform this technique 1-3 times per week to support healthy circulation, elimination and general health.

Warming Socks

Also known as “Naturopathic Tyle-nol” for its amazing ability to break

a fever, this treatment functions to draw congestion away from the chest and head area, increase circulation, stimulate the immune response and may break a fe-ver that has served its purpose. Although this hydrotherapy treatment is effective for people of all ages, it is known as a popular, gentle pediatric treatment for kids with upper respiratory infections or ear infections presenting with a fe-ver. This treatment is also most effective when performed before bedtime. The child or adult should start with a warm foot bath for at least 10 minutes. This is followed by dressing the feet in cotton socks that have been soaked in cold wa-ter and rung out completely. Wool socks are worn over the wet cotton socks. The feet will only feel cool for less than a minute, at which point the circulation in the feet is increased and their tempera-ture rises. While sleeping, the body will warm and dry the socks.

Alternating Sitz Baths

This technique requires a bathtub and a plastic tub large enough to place

the buttocks, hands or feet into comfort-ably. As with all hydrotherapy treatments, the alternating sitz bath increases circu-lation to the pelvic area/hands/feet and supports removal of toxins via the blood stream. One tub should hold warm/hot water (as hot as is comfortable) and the

W A T E R in the Treatment of Disease

other tub should hold cool/cold water (as cold as is comfortable). As with the Alternating Hot and Cold Showers, the buttocks hands or feet are soaked in the hot water for 3 minutes to start and tran-sitioned to the cold tub for 30 seconds to finish the cycle. A minimum of three cycles should be completed. The above three hydrotherapy treat-ment techniques are often prescribed as part of a comprehensive Naturopathic treatment plan, and it is advised that a Naturopathic Doctor be consulted when seeking treatment for health conditions that may benefit from these therapies. Patients with conditions including heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, undiagnosed infections, fever of unknown origin or pediatric fevers should always consult a doctor for a medical diagnosis and advice in regards to the safety of the above techniques.

Dr. Maged H. Maged, MD, NMD, Ph.D., APH (Ad-vanced Practitioner of Homeopathy), attributes his early understanding of holistic health to his education

in the former Soviet Union. While he was studying to be a physician, a whole-person approach to medicine was taught as a fundamental building block to a patient’s health. When Dr. Maged was one year-old he was struck with po-lio. The challenges that ensued due to his illness inspired Dr. Maged to be a doctor by the time he was at the age of six, be-cause he didn’t want “children to suffer like he did.” In 1991, Dr. Maged moved from Russia to the United States. As a man who traveled throughout the world, Dr. Maged chose America as his permanent home and in 1999 he became a citizen. “I became an American citizen because of the Constitu-tion. There is no other document like it in the world.” Dr. Maged said. Today, Dr. Maged practices at Sierra Integrative Medical Center, an 18,000 square-foot facility located in Reno. Before joining the facility Dr. Maged worked for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and later worked with Dr. Charles Farr, the “Father” of oxidative therapies. Dr. Maged was attracted to Sierra Integrative Medical, because of their shared philosophy and passion for integrative medicine. The philosophy of the renowned center is based on “wisdom, sensitivity, health, vi-tality and integrity.” “We focus on health, not the disease,” Dr. Maged said “Health and disease can not coexist in the body at the same time. It is scientifi cally known that we are capable of healing ourselves.” Dr. Maged believes in the importance of western medi-cine, but he expresses the dangers of sole reliance on chemi-cals to treat illness. “America has the best technology in crisis situations and bringing back life, but it is the worst when it comes to degen-

erative diseases,” Dr. Maged said “We have forgotten about ‘health’.” When a patient comes to Dr. Maged and his team, the focus is on getting rid of the toxins that have accumulated in the body at the cellular level. As Dr. Maged explains, the toxins due to our bad habits and, simply living life, fuel the fi re of disease while traditional chemical medicine just eliminates the smoke. Dr. Maged’s goal is to put out the fi re completely by giving the natural instruments needed for the body to repair itself. “Who wants to be a walking pharmacy without quality of life?” Dr. Maged said “First I ask why did the body lose its ability to heal itself? Unfortunately, patients come to us as a last resort. This type of medicine is to prevent disease. Imagine if people came to us fi rst?” Dr. Maged refers back to the Latin defi nition of “doctor,” which is “teacher”. Therefore, this is part of his philosophy of medicine: that one must “teach” the patient how to help their body repair itself and regain overall health. The doctor is the teacher and the patient, a student. In addition, Dr. Maged fi rmly believes in a spirituality component to health and ex-plains that everything is connected. He approaches the body spiritually as well as physically. He sees the “whole body, not just the parts.” Dr. Maged is not only a physician, but one could describe him as a philosopher. He discusses the power and purpose of gaining knowledge and how one can “tran-scend materialism through the use of intellect.” His message on how to live a healthy, balanced and rich life is a simple but powerful one. “Live your life to the fullest,” Dr. Maged said “Listen to your enjoyment…mentally, physically and spiritually. Put those together and you will enjoy life.”Dr. Maged’s primary focus is on patients, but his long-term goal is to create new ideas that can be applied to medicine in the future. “If there is no science behind it, I don’t use it.” Dr. Maged said “Science, behind what we believe, is very important.”The expanded Latin defi nition of ‘doctor’ describes the title only being given to one after living a “life dedicated to learn-ing, to knowledge and to the spread of knowledge.” As Dr. Maged eloquently describes, one must always have a philosophy in life, for it is the boat that will carry you over the seas of life. Dr. Maged is passionately dedicated to his work, his patients, and lives by his philosophy everyday.

“Health and disease can not coexist in the body at the same time.”

While yoga bashfully introduced itself to Americans many decades ago, the past ten years have witnessed roaring growth. Spearheading this expan-sion is one style, Bikram Yoga; it is fast becoming one of the most familiar

and popular. It is safe, efficient and powerful for all body types and ages. Each Bikram Yoga class lasts ninety minutes. One teacher verbally instructs a number of students through two breathing exercises and twenty-six yoga poses. The sequence and duration of each breathing exercise and pose is standardized, remaining constant for every class. The classrooms are carpeted, heated to about 104 degrees, and built with mirrored walls. Each of these standardization measures has been deliberately and distinctly incorporated to ensure that each student will practice yoga in a safe, effective and consistent manner. Each Bikram Yoga class is technically a Beginner’s Class. Instructions are plain and clear, with no jargon, chanting or exotic verbiage. In addition, each pose is performed twice, back-to-back, to emphasize correct form and alignment. When performed one-hundred-percent the right way, with correct alignment and breath-ing, the twenty-six and two will safely yield one-hundred-percent benefit for each individual student, regardless of his or her initial levels of strength, flexibility, and ability to balance. While at first glance, the super flexible young woman with the Gumby-spine may bend backward farther than the older man with lower back pain, one may likely assess she is gaining more benefit than he. This is not necessarily the case. In this case, if the man is holding the correct alignment at the greatest depth his spine will allow on this day, then he is benefiting equally as the more flexible woman. The class starts with a breathing exercise to warm up the lungs, increasing lung capacity over time. Then the first few poses warm up the spine, large muscles in the lower body and the major joints of the upper and lower body. Systematically, through the entire ninety minutes, each pose prepares the body and mind for the next pose. Each pose targets a different set of large and small joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. The flexibility of the joints and strength of the muscles is increased, and by the end of the class, all the joints and muscles have been stimulated. Also, each pose has a “compression signature.” As each pose is held, certain parts of the body are compressed, temporarily restricting the blood flow to the affected muscles, joints, glands and organs. When the pose is released, the heart blasts high-speed, nutrient-rich blood into those specific tissues, stimulating and regulating their func-tion. The room heat and humidity enhance all of these effects. The heat warms the muscles, facilitating deeper and safer stretching. Additionally, the heat stimulates sweat, which helps keep the complexion healthy and releases toxins. The sweat-ing flushes the tissues from the inside-out, leaving the body incredibly clean, the mind very clear and serene – the ideal combination for experiencing the peace and

calm of the relaxing pose that closes the class. Moreover, as students gain experi-ence, the consistency facilitates reliable feedback and greater familiarity. This turns the focus from the external, group environment, to the student’s own, inner experience of each pose. To safeguard the method’s purity, Bikram certifies each teacher he trains, and then re-certifies each teacher once every three years. Additionally, each Bi-kram Yoga studio is certified. This certi-fication triad ensures that wherever your travels take you, when you step into a certified Bikram studio, the benefits will be the same as if you were back in your home studio. The two main factors that differenti-ate the Bikram method are the standard-ized conduct of poses and the controlled class environment. These factors benefit your practice in that the selected poses and the heat combine to create a safe and efficient routine. Furthermore, the Bikram Method supports a lifelong prac-tice, in which the consistency helps you drop deeply into your own experience of the growing harmony between your mind and your body.

SUPPLEMENTS 101

We are all aware that we need oxygen in order to live.Oxygen however, is a very reactive substance andwhen it reacts with another substance oxidation oc-

curs. Oxidation is the addition of oxygen; removal of hydrogen or the removal of electrons from an element or a compound. The rusting of iron and the browning of apples are examples of oxidation. In our bodies, when oxygen is metabolized or burned by the body, our cells form byproducts called free radicals. Free radicals are charged atoms or groups of atoms that have one or more unpaired electrons that are desperately wanting them paired in order to be stable. They often steal the electron from healthy cells. This process of oxidation causes a chain reaction as another free radical is formed in the process, leading to thousands of free radical reactions in seconds. This creates damage to healthy cells, causing them to age and if DNA is involved then the likelihood of cancer forming is high. Research suggests that free radical damage causes cancer, cataracts, emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, Al-zheimer’s disease and the acceleration of the aging process.

What Causes Free Radicals?

Body processes are one means in which free radicals areformed. These include normal metabolism, high white

blood cell counts, and the detoxifi cation of toxic substances such as cigarette smoke. Physical and emotional trauma also contribute to oxidative stress as they increase the production of hormones that generate free radicals. The environment adds a great deal of oxidative stress to our systems. As the body detoxifi es chemicals such as smog, cigarette smoke, pesticides, radiation, heavy metals, and theeffects of the sun free radicals are created. Diet is also a major cause of oxidative damage to thebody. Food colorings, fl avorings, chlorinated drinking water,as well as eating vegetables and meats that are not organicall add toxins to our systems and the detoxifi cation of these

leads to free radical damage. Excessive sugar consumption gets converted into triglycerides by the liver and then are sub-ject to free radical damage. These damaged fats can cause ar-terial and cardiovascular damage. Processed (margarine and shortening) or highly heated vegetable oils are very unstable and cause a signifi cant amount of damage. Saturated fats (from animal and tropical oils) are more stable than polyunsaturated oils, especially when heated. Linus Pauling, PhD attributes the oxidation and rancidity found in vegetable oils as a cause of muscular and brain lesions, and the degeneration of blood vessels. The best choices of fats in the diet are the monoun-saturated oils (from olive and cold-pressed nut oils), unheated fl ax oils, and fi sh oil supplements.

Lucky for Us

Luckily we are not defenseless against these destructive oxi-dant stresses, as there is such a deactivator called the anti-

oxidant. Found naturally in the body and in numerous fruits, vegetables, herbs, and minerals, antioxidants act as stabiliz-ers of free radicals, bonding with them before they can attack cells. Phytonutrients (responsible for color, scent and fl avor) are the best dietary antioxidants as their nutrients are concentrat-ed in the skins of many vegetables and fruits. These include carotenoids such as beta-carotene; green tea and blue-green algae; and fruits high in fl avonoids. Other dietary antioxidants are available in the vitamins A, C & E. Our bodies also pro-duce their own antioxidants and these include superoxide dis-mutase, catalase and glutathione. It is important to take several different forms of antioxi-dants as only taking one can often cause even more free radi-cal damage.

Most of us have been taught that chocolate is a deca-dent dessert without any

nutritional merit. Fantastic news! Chocolate is actually a super-food especially when eaten in its raw form. All

chocolate origi-nates from the cacao bean, the raw form of chocolate. Cacao is loaded with antioxidants. Cornell University studies show that it has more antioxidants than red wine or green tea. Cacao is also a great source of magne-sium which promotes both heart and brain health. And finally, cacao really does make you feel good. Anandamide present in ca-cao (also present in dark chocolate) acts as a neurotransmitter to create feelings of well being. Create a super dessert that is a super food! You can even give it to your children for breakfast. In fact, this is so easy your

children can make it themselves! This recipe will amaze you and it has no sugar, dairy, or unnatural processed ingredients.

The organic movement, which started with organic food, is moving to the bedroom in a big way.

“The bedroom?“ you say. Yes, my dear, the bedroom, where organic mattresses and organic bedding are becoming an important new trend in the quest for a healthier lifestyle.

The organic bedroom trend is motivated by some very recent disturbing discoveries about the petroleum-based foam mattresses most of us sleep on every night. Studies of house-hold dust have confirmed that your mattress is likely one of the most significant sources of cancer-causing chemicals in your home. The average mattress consists of petroleum-based foam covered in petroleum-based polyester fabric. During its 10-year average lifetime, a foam mattress loses up to half its weight, and the lost weight goes on your bedroom floor in the form of toxic dust and in the air in the form of formaldehyde gas which is a by-product of the foam breakdown. Those dust bunnies under your bed could be a real threat to your health, unless you use an organic mattress which does not break down into these toxic by-products.

The Foam Mattress Story Gets Scary

The average petroleum-based foam queen-sized mattress is soaked in about a pound of fire retardant chemicals called PDBEs, which have already been banned in Europe, but not in North America. PDBEs are chemicals which are similar to the banned PCBs, and they build up in the body like DDT and PCBs. The PDBEs are used because they are the simplest and cheapest way to conform to United States mattress fire resistance codes. They are also promoted by the chemical industry, which recently sponsored tightening of the mattress fire resistance codes, which will cause even greater quantities of PDBEs to be used in the manufacture of mattresses beginning in 2006. While these new codes will save an estimated 27 lives a year from fires, these new regulations play Russian roulette with the future health of the 285 million Americans that sleep on these petroleum-based foam mattresses. Those calling for a ban on PDBEs say the greater danger is not the lives lost in fires, but the potentially millions of cases of cancer caused by exposure to these chemicals over the coming decades.

The solution to this problem is to remove petroleum-based bedding from your home, and this has spawned the burgeoning organic bedroom movement. The cornerstone of this trend is the organic mattress, which is the same kind of mattresses our ancestors used before the rise of the petrochemical industry after World War II. It is also interesting to note that current cancer rates are more than 5 times higher than before World War II, when everybody was sleeping on organic mattresses by definition, because there was no petrochemical industry during those times.

Examples of an Organic Mattress Include:

1. Organic cotton and wool batting innerspring mattresses with an organic cotton fabric cover. Wool is naturally fire retardant and meets all US fire codes.

2. A natural latex mattress, whose foam is made from the latex sap of the rubber tree and which require no fire retardants because natural rubber does not burn well.

3. Luxury organic mattresses which use combination of all three materials, organic cotton, wool, and latex, to produce maximum comfort mattresses that rival any non-organic mattresses.

4. All organic cotton mattresses. Although cotton does not burn well, it requires a doctor?s prescription because cotton does not meet US fire resistance codes.

Organic mattresses also have comfort advantages over traditional petroleum-based foam mattresses. They wick away moisture from the body much more thoroughly than clammy polyester and man-made foam, stopping night sweating and cutting down on problems like athlete?s foot and jock itch. Wool also regulates body temperature very well, which is important for a restful sleep. Natural latex foam and wool are resistant to dust mites, which cause allergies in many people, and organic cotton and latex foam are both hypoallergenic materials. Or-ganic mattresses are also considered a must for people with chemical sensitivities.

Major North American manufacturers of organic mattresses include Vivetique/Crown City Mattress, located in South El Monte, California, Royal Pedic, headquartered in Beverly Hills, California, and Obasan, located in Ottawa, Canada. Retailers of organic mattresses include a variety of local mattress stores who carry products from these manufacturers, and nationwide web retailers, like Dax Stores, which often have the best prices for these mattresses.

Most of us live in a world of constant stress. Technol-ogy carries information to us relentlessly, at lightening speed. We work long hours to pay for a rising cost

of living. We try desperately to provide our families with the attention they need. Meanwhile, we subsist on junk food, caf-feine, alcohol and prescription medications. Such a lifestyle isn’t good for anyone. But for an unlucky few, the toll is severe, indeed. Along comes a stressful event, the flu, an accident or injury, the death of a loved one, divorce or other life challeng-ing situation and these individuals simply fall apart. The result? A debilitating case of Fibromyalgia (FMS) and/or Chronic Fa-tigue Syndrome (CFS).FMS and CFS are the medical terms used to describe the wide range of symptoms associated with these syndromes. They are really two sides of the same coin. There is considerable debate on how FMS and CFS are diagnosed. However, to be clinically diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a person must meet the criteria as recommended by the American College of Rheumatology. This diagnosis is divided into major and minor criteria. The major criteria include:

1. Generalized aches or stiffness of at least 3 anatomical sites for at least 3 months.

2. Six or more typical, reproducible tender points.

3. Exclusion of other disorders that can cause similar symp-toms.

The minor criteria includes generalized fatigue, chronic head-aches, sleep disturbance, neurological and psychological complaints, numbing or tingling sensations, irritable bowel syndrome, variations of symptoms in relation to physical ac-tivity, stress and weather changes.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is also broken down into major and minor criteria. The major criteria for CFS are:

1. New onset of fatigue causing a 50% reduction in activity for at least 6 months.

2. Exclusion of other illnesses that can cause fatigue.

The minor criteria are broken down into further symptoms and signs. Symptoms include mild fever, recurrent sore throat, painful lymph nodes, plus a majority of the symptoms associ-ated with FMS. The signs are low-grade fever, non-infective sore throat and palpable tender lymph nodes.

Another way to say it is that these individuals with FMS and CFS have malfunctioning regulating systems. These imbalances

Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Page 23: October 2006 HB Mag

October 2006 23

cause the immune system to speak French, the digestive sys-tem to speak Spanish and the detoxification system to speak Greek. The incredible inborn intelligence that runs the body is finally unable to save them from life’s stresses. They’re totally “burnt out.” Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be miserable illnesses.

Most FMS and CFS patients have been to an average 8 differ-ent doctors and had the illness for 7 years before they receive an accurate diagnosis. They are typically on an average of 7 or more medications. Over 90% are female. Most doctors are baffled and intimidated by these mysterious diseases and these patients in some circles are called “medical misfits.” Neither fit neatly into a cook book medical text like the Merck Manual which is used to diagnose and treat common illnesses. Some doctors don’t recognize these syndromes as being “real.” In their defense, it can be humbling to encounter a patient with so many seemingly unrelated symptoms. They don’t know where to begin and traditional medicine alone is usually inef-fective. But, these symptoms are real and these individuals are truly suffering. FMS and CFS are dreadful illnesses that will take over a person’s health, career and social life.

There are two treatment options for these illnesses. One is based on a traditional medical model which uses various pre-scriptions medications. Anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxers, sedatives and pain pills are used to reduce the various symptoms. This approach can be helpful, but long term dependence of finding the “magic bullet” leads to frustration and further health problems caused from the un-wanted side effects of these medications. Unfortunately, there is no prescription pill that is the cure for Fibromyalgia. In fact, the American College of Rheumatology’s website discourages the use of these medications because they fail to show any real benefit. “And our best therapies Amitriptyline (Elavil) and Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) could not be distinguished from placebo after 3 months of therapy. Long-term, follow-up ob-servations indicated that clinical findings for patients with FMS did not change appreciably after 15 years….”

The other option is using a biochemical approach along with using amino acid therapy to restore neurotransmitter function and deep restorative sleep. With this approach, we have seen significant improvement with these difficult illnesses. By no means are treating these patients an easy task, but we do en-joy seeing the dramatic changes in their health. Within a short

The hot summer months are wind-ing down and now it’s time to take advantage of the cool fall weather.

Henry’s Farmers Market suggests the fol-lowing foods and supplements to help keep fitness enthusiasts healthy this sea-son:

1. Water, although technically not a food, is the most important thing a fit-ness enthusiast can put in their body. Water helps keep vital organs function-ing properly by riding the body of toxins, hydrating muscle cells and helping the body burn fat by using it as an energy source. Athletes should drink at least one gallon of water per day, especially when exercising.

2. Sports Drinks, in addition to wa-ter, can help keep you hydrated during workouts. Sports drinks help replace electrolytes lost through sweat and pro-vide carbohydrate energy to working

muscles. Also, flavored sports drinks may be more appealing than plain wa-ter, so you might be more likely to keep drinking and stay hydrated.

3. A Multivitamin, taken daily is one of the best training tools for fitness enthu-siasts. A multivitamin, which contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, will help keep the body healthy and give an athlete more energy.

4. Iron, is an especially important min-eral for fitness enthusiasts. Iron carries oxygen in the red blood cells to the muscles and is necessary to produce energy. Lack of iron can cause anemia, fatigue and a decrease in endurance, so athletes need to make sure to eat plenty of iron-rich foods or consider an iron supplement.

5. Calcium is another essential nutrient for fitness gurus. Osteoporosis can be a problem for people, especially ath-letes and women, who do not consume enough calcium. Many people fall short of their daily calcium needs because they dislike or cannot eat dairy prod-ucts. These people should look into tak-ing a calcium supplement or eating soy products to make sure they are keeping their bones healthy.

6. Soy Protein can be an important tool for those looking to get and keep fit. Soy protein contains a good amount of key amino acids which may boost me-tabolism. Soy also contains isoflavones which can help lower cholesterol. Ath-letes can get soy protein from foods like soymilk, tofu, and edamame. It’s also a great idea to add a scoop of soy protein powder to the post-workout smoothie.

7. Low-Fat Proteins, are important for athletes. Eating protein-rich chicken, fish and turkey (the leanest of all meats), will help athletes sustain energy during workouts and keep energy levels high throughout the day.

8. Carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, like vegetables, whole grains, brown rice, oats and sweet potatoes, provide energy without an abundance of calories to weigh you down. These carbs are filling and are rich in key nutrients such as B vitamins, iron and vitamin E.

9. Dairy products provide fitness enthu-siasts with two key components – pro-tein for energy and calcium for healthy bones. Lowfat dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese, skim milk and lowfat cheese make perfect post-work-out snacks.

10. Fruit is a great way to add both vita-mins and water to your diet. Try oranges and melons which have a high water content. But be sure to go organic as conventional fruits with high water con-tent often have high levels of pesticides. Fruits are ideal snacks for both before and after a workout since they hydrate and provide energy with natural sugars.

Intestinal function has an indisput-able lack of glamour, and seems rea-son enough for most people to never

give the importance of intestinal health a second thought. This is unfortunate and needs to change. The reality is that healthy intestinal function is critically important to overall health. Common sense dictates that good health requires good nutritional habits, proper digestion and absorption. Proper nutrition is essential to helping us pre-vent disease and illness. The foods you eat act not only as the fuel for your body but provide the building blocks that construct you. What you eat plays an important role in determining both your immediate and your long-term health. Digestion is the mechanical and chemi-cal breakdown of the food that you eat. Then there is absorption, which is the process of bringing the nutrients from your GI (gastrointestinal) tract into the rest of your body’s tissues. Even though you may eat healthy foods, maybe even organic foods, you may not always get the maximum benefit from them. Why? Because the body can utilize only what it can absorb. Your GI tract is a “tube” that starts with your mouth, includes the throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, and ends at the anus. All in all, the total length of this intestinal plumbing approaches thir-ty feet! Protruding from the inside wall of the intestine are finger-like structures called villi, with additional extensions from the villi called microvilli. Together they increase the intestinal absorptive capacity by 30 and 600 fold respective-ly. This increases the absorptive surface area to the size of a tennis court! Some of our habits have contributed to the deterioration of this absorptive surface in an alarming percentage of the population. These habits include the wide spread consumption of a diet high in refined simple sugars and fat, the use of alcohol, antacids, pain relievers and antibiotics among others. More recently research is confirming that certain foods can also destroy the villi and microvilli

in certain individuals, specifically gluten containing foods. These are all assaults to the GI tube resulting in damage and inflammation to the tissue which then cannot perform its job of absorption. This is where the expression “you are what you absorb” can be better understood. Without proper absorption, the building blocks necessary for health are missing, and eventually there is the expression of disease. Now the following will probably be new information to you. Think of this analogy: you have an “outer skin” that protects your blood and organs from penetration of harmful organisms. Un-less you cut yourself or break the integ-rity of the skin – such as with a syringe - your insides are protected. Well you also have an “inner skin”. That inner skin is the GI tube just mentioned and it serves as a physical barrier, called the “muco-sal barrier”. It is important to remember one odd fact: the inside of this GI tube is still considered the outside of the body. No misprint here. The food sitting there in your intestines is still considered out-side the body. Why? Because it hasn’t been absorbed into the bloodstream yet and therefore it is not part of you. As the internal condition of the in-testine becomes compromised, its role as physical barrier becomes compromised too and there is increased permeability- also known as leaky gut syndrome. Hav-ing leaky gut is like having a screen door with large holes in it allowing pests to get into your home. With leaky gut, the lining of your intestine becomes overly permeable and molecules that were not intended to cross into your blood stream, enter, or leak in. This leads to a great deal of immune stress as your body tries to handle all of these uninvited guests. Leaky gut is linked to many the fol-lowing conditions: IBS- Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Chronic Colitis, Candida Albicans, Esophageal Reflux, and Malabsorption Syndrome. Also linked are chronic allergies, hepa-titis, weight gain, skin disorders such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and acne, head-aches, arthritis, depression, Fibromyal-gia, Chronic fatigue syndrome, autoim-mune disorders, and even cancer. And

many of these are experienced today in epidemic proportions. Many are not aware that the “mu-cosal barrier” also serves as an immu-nological barrier, meaning it houses part of your immune system. Some say up to 70%. This immunological barrier is known as your “mucosal immunity”. There are specialized immune cells that line the mucosal barrier, called immu-nocytes. They produce sIgA (secretory IgA) which are “soldiers” that protect you in the event of invasion. Secretory IgA prevents the uptake into the rest of your body of viruses, bacteria and tox-ins by facilitating their transport out of the body. But a deficiency of sIgA, due to deterioration or inflammatory condi-tions of the intestine, leaves the door wide open for pathogens such as para-sites, bacteria, viruses, yeast/fungus to take hold. This can also lead to a leaky gut condition and the same issues men-tioned above. A tell-tale sign of low sIgA is an increase in food and other aller-gies. The view of your mucosal barrier and mucosal immunity as a living, breath-ing, active, vital system is probably not something you’re going to hear about in conversation. As you’ve now learned, it has many critical and dynamic biologic functions. When facing digestive disor-ders taking HCL (hydrochloric acid), di-gestive enzymes or other items such as antacids, laxatives and the like are not getting to the root of the problem but only serve to mask underlying issues. The bottom line is the health of the GI tract is fundamental to your overall health. Its effect on your hormone/endo-crine system and detoxification system are worthy of another article. Wouldn’t it be nice to know if your screen door has holes? If you are absorb-ing your nutrients? If all those supple-ments you take are being utilized by your body? Today there exist very so-phisticated markers that measure these areas. You can enjoy super health, and even regain your health and energy by taking action to restore the integrity to your “inner skin”!

CONSCIOUSwealth

Imagine a world where we truly live and do business in integrity with our values. Imagine a world where the most successful businesses are those that not only turn a large

profit but also create positive social and environmental change. Imagine businesses taking the responsibility to transform the planet, to advocate peace, global partnerships, and ecologi-cal preservation. Imagine companies that promote employee development and family values. Business is a powerful force on the planet. Can it be used to improve life on earth? Many people blame business for the destruction of the planet and culture. Now a growing number of eco-commerce advocates are pointing to business as the solu-tion, not the problem. This year at the Internation-al Conference on Business and Consciousness (www.bizspirit.com) over 250 business owners and consultants gathered to dis-cuss the possibilities of change through commerce. Model companies shared inspirational stories. Entrepreneurs reported that enthusiasm is builing as consumers are choosing to vote with their dollars and buy products that support the environ-ment. Green businesses are building loyalty and thriving in today’s market place. And companies that value people and employees develop deep respect and grow in prosperity. Busi-ness and Consciousness Conference organizers state, “Our changing world and uncertain times afford us the perfect en-vironment for visionary thinking, wise solutions and powerful insights.” While nonprofits and charities offer part of the solution to global issues, business may have a louder voice thanks to careful consumers. A leading organization The Co-op America Business Network, comprised of over 2000 businesses, helps

small socially and environmentally responsible businesses emerge and thrive by publicizing the success of these busi-nesses. Some notable companies include: Greenline Paper Company which offers office supplies that are recycled and nontoxic. ecomall.com, the largest environmental shopping center on line. And Recycline, a subscription toothbrush pro-gram where members use brushes made of recycled products. In addition, Fair Trade coffees and chocolates have become popular commodities that guarantee that the third world har-

vesters are getting paid a premi-um for their efforts. We are sav-ing the planet one purchase at a time. Companies like these lead the way and pioneer a fast grow-ing movement that allows cus-tomers to vote with their dollars. Even on Wall Street, socially responsible investing is a valid and popular request. Mutual Funds that screen for fair labor practices, nontoxic products and nonviolent companies have proven to be competitive with other traditional mutual funds.

Stockholders are voting for conscious business practices. In-vesting with values makes sense to people who recognize the power of money to instigate peace and positive change. Amazon Herb Shop is another example of this new evolved paradigm in business. Partnering with the Amazon Herb Company, www.amazonherbshop.com offers sustain-ably harvested herbs from the Amazon. Working with 14 vil-lages in the upper basin of Peru, a relationship based on mu-tual respect and trust allows the indigenous people to preserve 100s of thousands of acres while proving that the Rainforest is more valuable alive than dead. Recent studies show that an acre of Rainforest used for cattle grazing is valued at $60. That same acre used for lumber is worth $400, and when used to sustainably wild-craft herbs its value increases to $2,400 and it remains intact as a living and thriving environment. “The beauty of our company is that we provide people with not only products to improve their lives, but a means to contribute to the preservation of the Rainforest. In this way we use commerce as a powerful tool for positive change in an economically sustainable model,” states John Easterling of Amazon Herb Company. Their products promote better health and vitality for consumers while helping the planet. In today’s world business owners are indeed taking the lead towards brighter solutions to environmental degrada-tion. choices for the planet and watch how profits improve. As founder, chairman and CEO of Interface, Inc., a billion dollar manufacturer of products for commercial and institutional in-teriors, Ray commands a unique view of the case for corporate responsibility. His recycled carpet is the best selling in his line of carpets. His factories are building towards total ecological balance. He voluntarily controls toxic wastes and improves standards yearly. He leads the way for billion dollar compa-nies to set higher standards. Other proponents of more evolved business practices in-clude consultants, authors and celebrities. Victor L Hunter has developed tools and processes that change the way businesses are run. He advocates customer-focused marketing, commu-nity oriented service and spiritually sound ideals in action. A financial success in his own right, he speaks internationally and consults large companies. Paul Hawkins, author of Natural Capitalism and The Ecol-ogy of Commerce writes intelligently about solutions to many challenges facing our environment and therefore society. For example when writing about energy consumption and appli-ances he notes that the Energy Star labels found on appliances that are more energy efficient can save the typical U.S. house-hold about 30 percent of its energy bills. People are purchas-ing these appliances with the motive to save money. However, this also helps to protect our energy resources and therefore maintain environmental balance. He foresees a revolution in energy management predicting that appliances will become better integrated with one another and more innovative in de-sign. The sustainability model will positively impact our world. He believes saving ecology can also save the economy in the long run. Sustainability is a sound practice in all sections of business, government, education and American households. Paul Newman donates 100% of profits from Newman’s Own to charities. He started Newman’s Own with his friend, the author A.E. Hotchner. The company was founded on two principles: 1) top-quality products without the addition of ar-tificial ingredients or preservatives and 2) all profits would be donated to charity. What begin as a whimsical venture in 1982 was an instant success and has donated over $125,000,000 to many philanthropic causes from the arts to hunger relief and the environment. Conscious Business is on the rise. You can make a differ-ence by shopping wisely, supporting green business and start-ing your own enterprises that make our planet a healthy home for all and for many generations to come. As Paul Hawkins writes, “Ironically, business contains our blessing. It must, be-cause no other institution in the modern world is powerful enough to foster the necessary changes.” Use business to our favor. It is not the enemy. Business done correctly is our ally.

Alicia was beginning to struggle with her term paper. In the past this was when the trouble always began. First she’d find her mind wandering then she’d get that slug-

gish feeling. Finally, she’d have to confront the reality that no matter how hard she tried, it just wasn’t going to get done. This time, however, she spent a few minutes with her personal IRF and got back to work. This is not a fantasy of the distant future. This is a descrip-tion of a technology being used today. IRF stands for Induced Resonant Frequency. F. Holmes Atwater of the Monroe Insti-tute in Virginia has been actively involved in researching the therapeutic effects of sounds on consciousness and what he has referred to as the “frequency following response” of the brain when correctly combined with a technique called Bin-aural Beats. By employing EEG (brain wave) Coherence Analy-sis to create an active template for brain profiling, IRF is a potent and benign tool for enhancing peak performance and normal daily functioning. The human brain produces minute electrical currents that are intimately associated with the very active electro-chemical processes that are an essential part of life. These tiny signals vary in predictable patterns at specific frequencies. Generally, we measure the EEG (electroencephalographic) frequencies in the range of 2-40 Hz. “Hz” stands for “Hertz” which means

“cycles per second”. The brain has dozens of definable re-gions, and each one generates its own electrical patterns rel-evant to what tasks it’s performing and what impact those tasks are having on other regions. We’ve learned that certain low frequency brain waves of-ten found at the interface between the Alpha band (8-12Hz) and the Theta band (4-8Hz) are associated with many peak functions as well as restorative and creative activities. During periods of quality rest the brain generates strong Alpha-Theta patterns. Unfortunately, many of us often don’t get quality rest and may not be receiving the full benefit of strong Alpha-Theta rhythms we should be getting. EEG Coherence Analysis, an area of considerable active research, can identify the unique patterns of coordination (and discoordination) in the brain. If there is a deficit in Alpha-Theta production, this can be measured, and a template of a stronger Coherence profile can be developed. Using this template, the pattern of Alpha-Theta frequency activity in need of support can be recorded. When these frequencies are placed on split harmonic carrier waves known as Binaural Beats, they be-come audible as a low rumbling sound. Listening to this sound can instruct your brain to strengthen your specific Alpha-Theta rhythm by inducing similar rhythms. This is referred to as In-duced Resonant Frequency. Sometimes music is placed over these IRF sounds, but the low rumbling sounds themselves are the music of your brain. In an office setting active IRF therapy can be used for such problems as pain control, anxiety management, and learning disabilities. The extreme portability in digital sound reproduc-tion has made the use of IRF recordings so simple that athletes use them during breaks in games or matches, students can tune-up for a few minutes before a test, or anyone in virtually any setting can use this elegantly simple and safe aid to clear their mind so they can be their best.

Holistic and natural therapies for both people and their pets are making headlines these days with great success. The assort-ment of alternative healing op-

tions for pets is unbelievably varied. Herbs, massage, essential oils can all be used on animals – with some restrictions – providing relief without chemical ex-posure of many commercial products. It is very important to understand that animals might react differently than people do to certain herbs because of brain differences. Take for example cat-nip or valerian. These herbs are a calmi-native and act as a sedative in people, however they make animals hyperac-tive. Catnip (Nepeta Cataria) is an herb belonging to the mint family which has been used by man since the days of an-cient Egypt and by cats for even longer. Nepetalactone is an unsaturated lactone that does for some cats what marijuana does for some people. Cats take off on a ten minute “trip” during which they ap-pear to be in a state of ecstasy, rubbing and rolling on the plant. Never use aromatherapy products on cats, birds, ferrets, pot belly pigs, etc. Each species can tolerate essential oils in a different way and some just cannot at all. You should never use essential oils

PAMPEREDpets

near your birds, on your birds, nor ever diffuse oils near them. There have been some recent anecdotal reports that birds have died due to unexplained causes in homes in which plug-in air freshen-ers had recently been added. While a direct causal link cannot be made, it is recommended that birds not be exposed to fumes of any kind. Birds should be re-moved from a room before you use any type of spray cleaner. Please be careful not to use essen-tial oils in your canine’s eyes or nose. No matter how natural they are, essen-tial oils contain chemical properties and should always be used sensibly, and es-sential oils are recommended for exter-nal use only. To begin with, the advocates for nat-ural therapies feel that the best defense against illness is optimal nutrition and a lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular grooming for our pets. Pet owners will find a wealth of in-formation at the bookstore and on the Internet that offers advice on everything from the benefits of a raw meat diet to feeding your pet garlic to control worms and pests such as mosquitoes or fleas.

This kind of advice, though well-intend-ed, may not be right for all pets and will depend on your pet’s age, size, activity level and medical history. Always be sure to check with your vet before you make substantial changes to your pet’s diet or when you introduce new prod-ucts to your pet’s health and grooming regime. Natural pet care is becoming popu-lar as more and more research shows that many of the additives found in pet shampoos, grooming aids, sprays and even pet food, produce allergic and sometimes toxic effects in our furry friends. Always read the ingredients on skin care products. If you see SLS, SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), ALS (Ammo-nium Lauryl Sulfate), Cocomide MEA, or Lauramide DEA and chemical names which you not only do not understand, but many of which you cannot pro-nounce, then check out other products and look for ingredients such as Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Herbs and Es-sential Oils.

Although acidic to the taste, the modest lemons promote health with a highly alkalinizing effect

on the body. Lemons are therefore of great benefit during the cold and flu sea-son, as well as throughout the year for optimal health. In a state of 80% alkalinity and 20% acidity, or perfect blood chemistry, the body is at its best form for resisting in-vading viruses and bacteria. This state is determined by the food one eats. One highly acidic meal of potatoes, white bread, meat and pie, with a sweetened drink is enough to open one up to an onslaught of determined microbial at-tackers. When a person becomes sick with an infection, they almost invariably reach for a lemon-flavored drink or a bit of lemon squeezed in comforting herbal tea. Honey and lemon are often mixed together for cough relief, both in liquid form and in cough drops. Lem-ons can work many household-cleaning

miracles, but the very best miracle is the neutralizing alkaline action on acidic internal body systems. It is believed that the ancestors of lemons and limes took root some 8,000 years ago in India or in fertile crescents between Tigris

and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. The miracle of their juiciness inside thick skin gave rise to many legends and sto-ries. The Mesopotamians raised lemons for their beauty and aroma. Egyptians loved them for their aid in embalming. Jews brought them to Israel from their captivity in Babylon some 2,500 years ago. Romans used them as mothballs until Persian slaves taught them better. At various places and times, these citrus fruits have been identified as cures for fever and colic and as protection against poisons. Lemon juice is a powerful antibac-terial and it has been proved by experi-ments that the bacteria of malaria, chol-era, diphtheria and typhoid are destroyed by lemon juice. The bark of a lemon tree is used as a fever reducer, and its seeds are used to expel worms from the intes-tine. Lemon is the most detoxifying fruit. The detoxifying properties arise from its high content of potassium. A squeeze of a lemon a day in the morning will im-

Natural Defense against Infections…the Lemon!

minently cleanse the body. The juice is highly diuretic and therefore gives relief in kidney and bladder disorders. The juice also encourages bile secretion and is valuable in treating jaundice. Lemon has been shown to be a blessing for mountaineers, as it is helpful at times of insufficient oxygen or difficulty breath-ing. The lemon juice and the essential of lemons can be of great benefit to mind, body and soul. One of the most impor-tant properties of lemons is the ability to defend the body against infection. This is a valuable asset for both illness and external wounds, as lemons can stimu-late the body’s white blood corpuscles, improving the body’s ability to defend itself from infection. The essential oil of the lemon is well known for the ability to energize and revitalize. Lemon juice is excellent for colds and sore throats. Its astringent and antiseptic qualities help soothe and its high vitamin C levels help boost the immune system, encouraging normal growth and tissue repair. Lemon also helps to strengthen gums and teeth and prevents and cures acute inflam-mation of gum margins and dental de-cay. Oily skin can be toned with lemon juice. A few drops of lemon juice and water are added to a whisked egg white and make an excellent face mask for spotty or greasy skin. For hard skin on elbows or feet, half a lemon rubbed on the affected area for about 10 minutes is helpful. This super fruit is also used to treat dandruff, and can add shine to the hair. The lemon essential oil, when add-ed to an oil burner in a study room, can sharpen focus and induce a sharpening of intellect. According to the therapy test, lemon aroma helps to calm and it lightens and disperses confusion. The American Association for Can-cer Research studied that consumption of lemon peel might appear to have re-duced the risk of developing skin cell cancer by 34%. The researchers specu-late that a compound found in lemon peel called D-Limonene may protect the skin from cancer. Researchers did not find the same effect from consum-ing grapefruit or oranges, nor was there a relationship found between fruit juice and lower skin cancer rates. Most lemon peel used was consumed as a topping on food and drinks.

Before the Appleton, Wisconsin high school re-placed their cafeteria’s processed foods with wholesome, nutritious food, the school was described as out-of-control. There were weap-

ons violations, student disruptions, and a cop on duty full-time. After the change in school meals, the students were calm, fo-cused, and orderly. There were no more weapons violations, and no suicides, expulsions, dropouts, or drug violations. The new diet and improved behavior has lasted for seven years, and now other schools are changing their meal programs with similar results.

Years ago, a science class at Appleton found support for their new diet by conducting a cruel and unusual experiment with three mice. They fed them the junk food that kids in other high schools eat everyday. The mice freaked out. Their behav-ior was totally different than the three mice in the neighbor-ing cage. The neighboring mice had good karma; they were fed nutritious whole foods and behaved like mice. They slept during the day inside their cardboard tube, played with each other, and acted very mouse-like. The junk food mice, on the other hand, destroyed their cardboard tube, were no longer nocturnal, stopped playing with each other, fought often, and two mice eventually killed the third and ate it. After the three month experiment, the students rehabilitated the two surviving junk food mice with a diet of whole foods. After about three weeks, the mice came around.

Sister Luigi Frigo repeats this experiment every year in her second grade class in Cudahy, Wisconsin, but mercifully, for only four days. Even on the first day of junk food, the mice’s behavior “changes drastically.” They become lazy, antisocial, and nervous. And it still takes the mice about two to three weeks on unprocessed foods to return to normal. One year, the second graders tried to do the experiment again a few months later with the same mice, but this time the animals refused to eat the junk food.

Across the ocean in Holland, a student fed one group of mice genetically modified (GM) corn and soy, and another group the non-GM variety. The GM mice stopped playing with each other and withdrew into their own parts of the cage. When the student tried to pick them up, unlike their well-behaved neighbors, the GM mice scampered around in apparent fear and tried to climb the walls. One mouse in the GM group was found dead at the end of the experiment.

It’s interesting to note that the junk food fed to the mice in the Wisconsin experiments also contained genetically modified ingre-dients. And although the Appleton school

lunch program did not specifically attempt to remove GM foods, it happened any-

way. That’s because GM foods such as soy and corn and their derivatives are largely found in processed foods. So when the school switched to unpro-

cessed alternatives, almost all ingredients derived

from GM crops were taken out automati-cally.

Does this mean that GM foods negatively affect the behavior of humans or animals? It would certainly be irresponsible to say so on the basis of a single student mice experiment and the results at Appleton. On the other hand, it is equally irresponsible to say that it doesn’t.

We are just beginning to understand the influence of food on behavior. A study in Science in December 2002 concluded that “food molecules act like hormones, regulating body func-tioning and triggering cell division. The molecules can cause mental imbalances ranging from attention-deficit and hyperac-tivity disorder to serious mental illness.” The problem is we do not know which food molecules have what effect. The bigger problem is that the composition of GM foods can change radi-cally without our knowledge.

Genetically modified foods have genes inserted into their DNA. But genes are not Legos; they don’t just snap into place. Gene insertion creates unpredicted, irreversible changes. In one study, for example, a gene chip monitored the DNA before and after a single foreign gene was inserted. As much as 5 percent of the DNA’s genes changed the amount of protein they were

producing. Not only is that huge in itself, but these changes can multiply through complex interactions down the line.

In spite of the potential for dramatic changes in the compo-sition of GM foods, they are typically measured for only a small number of known nutrient lev-els. But even if we could iden-tify all the changed compounds, at this point we wouldn’t know which might be responsible for the antisocial nature of mice or humans. Likewise, we are only beginning to identify the medicinal compounds in food. We now know, for example, that the pigment in blueberries may revive the brain’s neural communication system, and the antioxidant found in grape skins may fi ght cancer and re-duce heart disease. But what about other valuable compounds we don’t know about that might change or disappear in GM varieties?

Consider GM soy. In July 1999, years after it was on the market, independent researchers published a study showing that it contains 12-14 percent less cancer-fi ghting phytoestrogens. What else has changed that we don’t know about? [Monsanto responded with its own study, which concluded that soy’s phy-toestrogen levels vary too much to even carry out a statistical analysis. They failed to disclose, however, that the laboratory that conducted Monsanto’s experiment had been instructed to

use an obsolete method to detect phytoestrogens results. In 1996, Monsanto published a paper in the Journal of Nu-

trition that concluded in the title, “The composition of glypho-sate-tolerant soybean seeds is equivalent to that of conventional soybeans.” The study only compared a small number of nutrients and a close look at their charts revealed signifi cant differences in the fat, ash, and carbohydrate content. In addition, GM soy meal contained 27 percent more trypsin inhibitor, a well-known soy allergen. The study also used questionable methods. Nutri-ent comparisons are routinely conducted on plants grown in identical conditions so that variables such as weather and soil can be ruled out. Otherwise, differences in plant composition could be easily missed. In Monsanto’s study, soybeans were planted in widely varying climates and geography.

Although one of their trials was a side-by-side comparison between GM and non-GM soy, for some reason the results were left out of the paper altogether. Years later, a medical writer found the missing data in the archives of the Journal of Nutri-tion and made them public. No wonder the scientists left them out. The GM soy showed signifi cantly lower levels of protein, a fatty acid, and phenylalanine, an essential amino acid. Also, toasted GM soy meal contained nearly twice the amount of a lectin that may block the body’ s ability to assimilate other nutrients. Furthermore, the toasted GM soy contained as much as seven times the amount of trypsin inhibitor, indicating that the allergen may survive cooking more in the GM variety. (This might explain the 50 percent jump in soy allergies in the UK, just after GM soy was introduced.)

We don’t know all the changes that occur with genetic engineering, but certainly GM crops are not the same. Ask

the animals. Eyewitness reports from all over North America describe how several types of animals, when given a choice, avoided eating GM food. These included cows, pigs, elk, deer, raccoons, squirrels, rats, and mice. In fact, the Dutch student mentioned above first determined that his mice had a two-to-one preference for non-GM before forcing half of them to eat only the engineered variety.

Differences in GM food will likely have a much larger impact on children. They are three to four times more suscep-tible to allergies. Also, they convert more of the food into body-building material. Altered nutrients or added toxins can re-sult in developmental problems. For this reason, animal nutrition studies are typi-cally conducted on young, developing animals. After the feeding trial, organs are weighed and often studied under magni-fication. If scientists used mature animals instead of young ones, even severe nu-tritional problems might not be detected. The Monsanto study used mature animals instead of young ones.

They also diluted their GM soy with non-GM protein 10- or 12 fold before

feeding the animals. And they never weighed the organs or examined them under a microscope. The study, which is the only major animal feeding study on GM soy ever published, is dismissed by critics as rigged to avoid finding prob-lems.

Unfortunately, there is a much bigger experiment going on one which we are all a part of. We’re being fed GM foods daily, without knowing the impact of these foods on our health, our behavior, or our children. Thousands of schools around the world, particularly in Europe, have decided not to let their kids be used as guinea pigs. They have banned GM foods.

The impact of changes in the compo-sition of GM foods is only one of several reasons why these foods may be danger-ous. Other reasons may be far worse.

With the epidemic of obesity and diabetes and with the results in Appleton, parents and schools are waking up to the critical role that diet plays. When making changes in what kids eat, removing GM foods should be a priority.

SKINcare

COMMUNITY

Beautiful skin and good health. These are qualities that inspire, motivate, encourage and can

promote healing, as well as contribute to delight and satisfaction in living. Beautiful skin means good health!

Beautiful Skin and Digestion. What does beautiful skin have to do with intestinal health? What does diges-tion have to do with glowing, radiant skin and healthy bones and hair? Ev-erything! Food fuels the body and the

process of digestion is closely linked to our outside appear-ance. A “beautiful skin diet” in our opinion consists of a diet rich in the elements that keep us clean, restore elasticity to the skin and heal scar tissue. These nutrients abound in raw plant foods - the dark, green leafy vegetables that are so rich in the properties that help us maintain a clean digestive system, which enables us to restore our health and pro-mote elasticity to the skin. These nutrients can also provide mineral density to bones and benefit our hair and teeth.

Skin and Liver Relationship. Did you know that the condition of your skin also reflects how well your liver is processing the fats and oils entering your system? The skin is the body’s largest organ. A clear, soft, luminous skin is an indi-cation of a diet rich in raw plant foods that deliver a myriad of antioxidants to the skin and also indicates how well the liver (which performs over 500 functions) is doing its job.

Acne and Unhealthy Looking Skin. Americans are large con-sumers of processed foods, including donuts, cookies, soft drinks, hamburgers, fries and hotdogs. Acne is a condition that often arises from such a diet consisting of these sugars and bad fats, as a result of the liver being overloaded and throwing off what it cannot process onto the skin. Acne is a direct result

of consuming hydrogenated oils, polyunsaturated oils, chemi-cally treated oils, etc. that increase the burden on the liver to break down and metabolize these foods. Having no place else to go, these undigested elements find their way into the blood stream and consequently, the skin, resulting in acne - a skin condition caused by free radicals. By implementing more live foods and less processed foods into the diet, we provide live enzymes that are needed to fuel our bodies.

Beautiful Healthy Skin and Colonics. In line with healthy as-similation of food, we believe that a clean colon is vitally im-portant to this process and is absolutely necessary before any healing can begin. Colon hydrotherapy soaks, loosens and removes the debris that clings to the intestinal lining. Accord-ing to studies, many Americans may be carrying as much as

20 to 40 lbs. of impacted fecal matter in their colon and also suffer from some sort of dysfunction of the colon. A clean colon will also allow for the body to better absorb the healing proper-ties of vitamins, minerals and other nutri-ents. We feel that colon hydrotherapy is one of the most valuable therapies for the body and, therefore, absolutely vital to good health in general. Why? Because colon hydrotherapy removes the toxins which have been accumulated and have putrefied, causing impaction of the intes-

tines. Symptoms of colon dysfunction are too numerous to mention here, but include: constipation, allergies, indiges-tion, anxiety, bad breath, fatigue, poor appetite, lack of focus and headaches. A series of Colon Hydrotherapy sessions can restore good health and vitality.

General Recommendations for Healthy Skin:

1) Eliminate simple sugars, all soda pops and artificial sweeteners

2) Eat a diet high in fiber

3) Reduce or eliminate fast foods, junk food, fried foods, etc.

4) Wheatgrass juice does a body a lot more good than milk – limit your intake of milk to 1 glass per day or elimi-nate it from your diet.

5) Schedule a cleansing program to help detoxify your system.
