This February don’t just spice up your love life, spice up your diet!

This month’s cover is the vibrant chili pepper. There

are hundreds of varieties of chili peppers and they have been part of the American diet since 7500 BC. If you’re thinking you don’t like spicy food, you might want to reconsider after you learn the abundance of health benefits from chili peppers.

Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chili peppers; it’s what makes your mouth scream. This chemical provides pain relief for migraines, sinus headaches and helps combat nasal congestion.

Capsaicin has the ability to make cancer cells commit suicide in rats, and may be used in the near future to combat prostate cancer in males. The substance is also a thermagenic and can assist in burning fat by increasing the metabolism of the body’s adipose tissue, generating heat. Capsaicin has the ability to lower blood pressure and protect the heart by lower-ing cholesterol, triglycerides and platelet aggregation.

If spicy food is out of the picture, you can still benefit from chili peppers! Next time you get a case of cold feet, or are pre-paring for a ski day, put some cayenne in your shoes or boots. It will keep your feet warm for the winter months to come!

Spice Up Your Life

Dear Readers,

I hope many of you were able to watch President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Tears of joy wet my eyes and my heart warmed as I listened to his speech of courage and hope for a new government – a government that will be accountable to its people. His promise for change will not be a quick fix; rather it will be a work in progress. I appreciated his honesty in articulating that change will take time, as well as a dedication to the process. This way of thinking can also be applied to our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Instead of looking for instant gratification regarding health issues, look pur-posefully to the root cause. This will provide a stronger foundation in living a long and productive life.

Watching what we eat plays a huge part in how we feel and consequently how we feel physically, affects our thoughts. Eating whole foods, drinking plenty of water and getting exercise every day enhance longevity and the quality of our life. Adopting a healthy mind set of paying attention to our thoughts, as well as to what we ingest will enable us to have the fortitude to endure a new way of life. Focusing our attention on what we have rather than what we are lacking elevates our mental attitude. Choosing our words care-fully when we speak and adopting an attitude of service to others can be rewarding in all relationships, both business and personal. We live in an amazing and beautiful time. How wonderful to be a part of positive change in the making, “United we stand, divided no one wins.”

Our mission at Healthy Beginnings Magazine is a constant work in progress bringing to you every month the latest in natural and integrative medicine, health, nutrition, fitness, sustainability, personal growth and more. Education is the key when it comes to change, enjoy reading this issue, look inside and I bet you will learn something new!

Best in Health and Happiness,

Dawn Gowery

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

Written by Brittany Russell

Chocolate lovers rejoice – St. Valentine’s Day is fast ap-proaching and this holiday’s go-to gift is that very sweet

indulgence most try to avoid all year. More chocolate is consumed in the winter, specifically in February, than any other time of year – so chocolate lovers beware. Some ingredients listed on that heart-shaped box may or may not have your heart in mind.

TocopherolTocopherol is a chemical compound

with Vitamin E activity, and is part of a series of organic compounds consisting of methylated phenols – a colorless, possibly

poisonous isomeric phenol derived from coal or wood tar. The vitamin E activity was first identified in 1936 from a dietary fertility factor in rats. Tocopherol is added to chocolate to protect the flavor of the cocoa. The facts concerning tocopherol can be confusing: it is synonymous with natural occurring vitamin E, but some forms may contain additional, possibly harmful components.

Soy LecithinA food additive, soy lecithin is ex-

tracted from the soybean and is a by-product of soybean oil. A small amount is added to chocolate to keep cocoa and cocoa butter from separating. Soy leci-thin may be harmful if you are allergic to soy or if you are trying to minimize your soy intake. This ingredient may also prove helpful; soy lecithin is high in choline, which can be good for brain development, increased memory and heart disease prevention.

As always, it is better to be safe than sorry; homemade is the typical safe option instead of guessing what an ingredient might do to your body. Try giving your sweetheart a personal box of chocolatey goodness, straight from the heart.

Chocolate TrufflesYou will need:12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips3 tablespoons milk3 egg yolks3/4 cup butter, cut into pieces1 tablespoon brandy (optional) Chocolate shot, nonpareil decors or cocoa

On top of a double boiler, melt choco-late chips with milk. Beat with electric beater until smooth. Add the egg yolks one at a time, continuously beating the chocolate. Remove pan from hot water and beat in butter, a few pieces at a time, until completely blended. Continue beating 2 or 3 more minutes. Add brandy, if desired. Let chocolate sit for 4 to 5 hours to cool.

If you are in a time crunch, chocolate may be cooled quicker by placing in refrig-erator. When workable, roll into balls about the size of large marbles. Roll in chocolate shot, colored candy dots or cocoa to coat. Refrigerate. Serve in tiny paper cups.

Mirit Sloves, MSC, EMDR TherapistWritten by Sara Piccola

Born and raised in Israel, Mirit Sloves has made Reno her home, a community she describes as family; everyone cares and watches out for one another, similar to her upbringing in Israel.

After serving in the Israeli army, Mirit moved to the United States, where she has been involved in education for 18 years, working with children from an academic and emotional aspect. Several years ago she went to school to receive her Masters in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy from the University of Phoenix, Reno campus, in order to fulfill the drive to move beyond her limits and do more.

Mirit completed an internship with Children’s Cabinet working with families and children, and now she has a private practice. In addition, she is an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing-trained (EMDR) therapist and is currently working towards her PhD in Psychology.

Although Mirit’s passion is working with children and fami-lies, she also sees couples and individuals of all ages. Her solu-tion focus approach centers on the here and now counseling to equip clients with new and healthier tools to handle life’s many challenges. By placing emphasis on the client’s positive strength rather than dwelling on their weaknesses, short-term therapy is used with an average of 12 sessions.

Additionally, Mirit believes in educating about conse-quences instead of using punishment, especially for children and adolescents. If a teenager comes to her with a smoking problem, they will research the consequences of smoking and look at x-rays of healthy lungs versus a smoker’s lungs. She is very involved in teaching her clients new behavior skills.

“We all live in a system,” according to Mirit. For example, working with a child empowers the family as a whole. This supports her technique of collaborative therapy as everything is team oriented. If something does not work for a patient then it is re-evaluated and changed for the following week. Every one of Mirit’s patients has her cell phone number, and she is available beyond weekly sessions.

There are many factors in today’s world that are affecting our overall health. Stress is the major factor, but when it comes to family, communication is also becoming more difficult with the new trend of texting and e-mail. The lack of personal contact enables people to hide behind technologies, where one cannot observe body language or voice tonality. When technology is prevalent in our world, we lose the opportunity of developing social skills.

Because of demanding and busy lifestyles, some parents speak to their children approximately 15 to 20 minutes a day and most of that time is in passing and through command. She suggests that families sit down once a week, turn off all com-munication and have a family meeting for at least two hours. She also discussed the benefits of creating a business plan for your family. Most people make business plans for their jobs but they forget the most important business plan of all, the family.

Mirit has found that children are often intimidated by go-ing to an office for therapy. Therefore, in addition to her office hours, she has begun in-home therapy to eliminate this obstacle. She is using art and play therapy as well as enhancing study, organizational, problem solving and coping skills.

Ultimately, Mirit sees herself opening a parenting school in Reno. The school would be a one stop place for parents, chil-dren, counseling, tutoring, etc. Mirit hopes to instill healthier and more balanced tools for her clients in order for them to enjoy and celebrate life. She tells her clients, “this is not a dress rehearsal, this is the show.”

It’s been my long time assertion that all of life’s ills can be resolved by putting in the good stuff and taking out the bad stuff in our body. I’ve been writ-

ing about the good stuff; supplements and healthy lifestyles, in our last three articles on Brain Fog and now it is very important to acknowledge the bad stuff; toxins and immunosuppressants and how to get rid of them. Heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic break down our nerves and can cause death. Short of death, these metals cause a lot of grief including neurological damage from Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, arterio-sclerosis, heart attacks, stroke, depression, psychosis, Attention Deficit Disorder, and what you end up with is brain fog. We are all exposed to these heavy metals daily and have 1,000 times more lead in our bones than pre-industrial man.

The heavy metals issue has been around for a long time. At the turn of the 20th cen-tury the English felt hat makers were known to become “mad as a hatter” after a year of working on felt hats that were treated with mercury. This especially affected the work-ers who painted the hat brims with mercury and touched the paintbrush to their lips to moisten it. It is documented that they became psychotic, bipolar, ADD, melan-cholic (depressed) and lost their memory. The Murimota Bay disaster in the 1980s in Japan was another dramatic demonstration of what happens when an industry dumped mercury into a bay where the local people caught their fish. Many of the population began exhibiting MS like symptoms: gaunt, experienced total brain and body decline and loss of motor function.

Mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic, among other heavy metals, are well known neurotoxins. According to the World Health Organization, the chief source of mercury in man arises from mercury amalgam fillings in teeth, which are 50 percent mercury and outgas mercury with chew-ing of food and drinking hot liquids. If you would like to watch mercury vapor coming off the teeth and see how ra-dioactive mercury spreads through the body go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ylnQ-T7oiA. Be sure to ask your dentist about mercury before getting your next filling.

Removing mercury and these other metal toxins involves a process called chelation. Chelation comes from the Greek root Chelos, the claw to grasp or to bind. There are many chelating agents available, which remove heavy metals from the body. You can read more about chelators in the next issue.

Beside metals, we are all routinely poisoned by hundreds of chemical toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, volatile organic hydrocarbons, benzene, xylene, toluene, gasoline, propane, butane, die-sel and jet fuel, plastics such as bisphenol A, phthalate, styrene, solvents such as MEK (methyethylketone), formaldehyde, formic acid and acetone.

One effective way to remove these toxins is to undergo routine sweating. Far infrared saunas (FIR) are high tech- low temperature saunas that use the radiation wavelength of sunshine to detoxify the

Medical DetoxWritten by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

Brain Fog

body. They are operated at low tempera-tures, 90 to 140 degrees instead of the high temperatures of regular saunas of up to 220 degrees, and are well tolerated by older, more sensitive people. When begin-ning a FIR detox, it is important to begin slowly, increasing time and temperature gradually so that you don’t release toxins from your tissues and cells more quickly than the body can eliminate them. To learn more, read Dr. Sherry Rogers book, Detox or Die. She makes a great case for toxicity in all of us and how routine sauna use re-moves these toxins by sweating so we can pursue healthy aging strategies without the road blocks of environmental toxins.

Problem solving seems easy enough; you identify the prob-lem and look for a solution. However, it is helpful to look

deeper at the problem and most impor-tantly identify your role in the situation. For instance, ask yourself the following questions in the “I” form.

1. What Happened? What events led up to the problem?

2. How do/did I feel? Identifying our feeling is important; it helps us decide how to proceed. Once we look at our part in the event we can decide what changes to make.

3. What is my part in the event? (No Guilt) Was someone unkind to us? Was I unkind? Did I allow someone to take advantage of me? Did I break a com-mitment?

4. Remember to look for the gift/posi-tive in the situation (there is always one).Sometimes we can’t see the gift until we move through a situation and look back. Continuing to look for the gift keeps us out of self-pity/victimstance. Self-pity is detrimental to our physical, mental and spiritual selves. Looking for the gift keeps us hopeful and moving forward. In the Chinese language the same symbol is used for crisis and op-portunity. Remember that every crisis is an opportunity to grow as a human being.

5. How would you like to handle the problem? (five minutes of venting, or a

day if you need) It is okay to be angry, it lets us know we need to make a change in ourselves or make requests of someone else. When our feelings are hurt we may feel disrespected. To sit in negative emotion too long is detrimental to our overall health, so it is essential to identify what happened on our part so we can make plans for moving ahead.

6. How can I realistically handle the problem? What is the best possible out-come for me? What would I really like to see happen?

7. It’s time to develop a plan.

For example:

a. Asking for or giving an apology.

b. Making a decision to decline invita-tions with someone who has a tendency to stand me up or isn’t reliable.

c. Learning how to decline invitations with someone I am uncomfortable around without making excuses.

d. Letting someone know my feelings are hurt and making a request for future interactions with the person that will benefit me.

e. If I have asked for my needs and wants and there is no change or little change on the other persons part I may want to choose to severe my relationship with the person.

f. A plan for self nurturing is essential. We must treat ourselves well. Do some-

thing kind for ourselves especially posi-tive self talk. If we were disrespectful it is important for us to encourage ourselves and commit to changing the behavior otherwise we will continue being disre-spectful which will continue the turmoil and negative emotion.

It is important to have some idea of how you’d like to proceed rather than blindly acting out. It’s important to have more than one plan for any situation. If one plan does not work you are not stuck. You have two alternatives to choose from. If you abandon a plan it’s a good idea to replace it, just in case.

why the pH level (acid/alkaline balance) of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. It seems that the entire meta-bolic process depends upon an alkaline environment.

Chronic over-acidity corrodes body tis-sue, and if left unchecked will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. Dr. Young believes that over-acidity is at the root of all dis-ease, and he also believes that’s what is keeping us fat.

In order to create the proper acid/alkaline balance within your body you must eat the proper balance of acid and alkaline foods. That means 80 percent of your diet must be alkalizing foods, like green vegetables. We need

much smaller portions of acid foods like meats and grains on our plates. So if you have three-quarters of your plate filled with green vegetables, you’ll be good to go.

The book explains the details of why this is true, exactly what to eat and gives sugges-tions on how to prepare it. Dr. Young explains how this program will bring you increased quality of life. Over the years he has seen this alkalizing program bring immediate improvement to many who are seriously ill, especially those who are completely confused about what is causing their illness. Dr. Young says that it is only when the body is acidic is it vulnerable to germs – in a healthy base (slightly alkaline) balance, germs can’t get a foothold.

Dr. Young has seen the following changes in his patients after beginning an alkalizing diet: an increase in energy, new mental clarity and powers of concentra-tion, increased strength and stamina, re-lease of excess body fat while increasing muscle mass, brighter eyes and clearer skin, and basically a return to vibrant, personal health.

He believes that “all the body’s regula-tory mechanisms (including breathing, circulation, digestion and hormone production) work to balance the delicate internal acid/alkaline balance. Our bod-ies cannot tolerate extended over-acidity. In the early stages of the imbalance, the symptoms may not be very intense, and may include only such things as skin eruptions, headaches, allergies, colds and flu, and sinus problems. As things get further out of whack, more serious situations arise. Weakened organs and systems start to give way, resulting in

dysfunctional thyroid glands, adrenals, liver and so on. If the pH in tissue devi-ates too far to the acid side, oxygen levels decrease and cellular metabolism will slow. In other words, cells begin to die at an increased rate.”

Dozens of personal stories are given ex-plaining how people who had spent years trying to determine why they were sick and what to do about it, tried Dr. Young’s program and regained their health. These ailments included chronic indigestion, al-lergies, different types of cancer, fatigue, dizziness, anemia, hypoglycemia, eating disorders, eye problems and everything in between.

In addition, Dr. Young believes that most people don’t drink nearly enough water. He states that what most people interpret as hunger is really the body’s cry for water, and that you should drink at least 4 liters of pure water each day. He reminds us that we can’t count sodas, coffee or other liquids as pure water. His research also shows that you may need a vegetable juice cleanse in order to really get started on a balanced pH program.

He has included dozens of recipes for high alkaline meals in the book, so as you understand the concept, as you read the lists of acid and alkaline foods, it all seems to come together and make sense. Only you can decide to do a gradual balance or an abrupt balance. Dr. Young feels that if you are seriously ill, you need to get your body back into pH balance as soon as possible. His experience with thousands of patients shows that this is vital.

The author quotes Robert Louis Ste-venson when he says, “There will come a time when we will sit down to the banquet of our consequences.” Dr. Young believes that the American public is cur-rently suffering the consequences of an over-acidic diet, and has written this book in order to explain what to do about it.

Whether you are stepping off the sidewalk, picking up a child, or snow skiing; building strength, flexibil-

ity, and balance will ensure that you continue to function at your maximum and without injury. Strength not only increases your metabolism by burn-ing more calories, it builds your bone density which reduces your risks for fractures or breaks. You can gain more strength through resistance training, which is best done slowly over time to prevent improper muscle growth or compensation by secondary muscles.

Flexibility increases your strength and protects your muscles by allowing them to release joint stress, giving them elasticity so they can move through an entire range of motion without strain-ing, and maintain their normal func-tional length. Balance is centered in your “core” and keeps you on your feet. Balance exercises increase the strength in your abdominals and back.

Core muscles are located near your spine and in the abdominal re-gion. They support your spine when you bend over to lift that child or the groceries. Without a strong core, you

will be weaker no matter how “big” your muscles appear. “It is the beginning point of movement and the center of gravity for the body.”

Practice walking. Your leg lifts your foot. Your leg muscles are connected to your abdominal muscles. For anyone who has had surgery in their abdominal muscles, it is very difficult to walk be-cause those muscles have been severed. Strength and motion come from this area. Increasing your fitness level at any age will increase your ability to perform daily tasks effortlessly, increase your bone density, and reduce chances for injury, as well as reducing risks for diabetes, heart-disease, osteoporosis and obesity.

*NEVER exercise without a proper warm-up or cool down - both prevent injury during and after your workout.

The month of February inevitably brings thoughts of Valentine’s Day – the day devoted to Love. Since words such as “spark”, “electricity” or “energy” are often used when describing falling in love, it seemed appropriate

to devote the February installment of this series to Energy and Electricity. Why separate them? Energy represents the greater use of a variety of forms of energy, such as transportation, manufacturing and electricity production. Electricity is what we use to operate lighting, appliances and equipment in our homes and businesses. While closely intertwined, they remain independent.

Since it is still early in the year, below is a proposed list of 9 Steps in ‘09 that will not only reduce energy and electricity consumption, but will also save money and benefit the environ-ment. Some steps are simple habit shifts and cost nothing. Others require a small to modest investment up front but more than pay for themselves in a short amount of time.

1. Turn off the lights and computers. Even in sleep mode, the computer eats electricity. While it may be a small,

latent amount, it is still consumption. A good rule of thumb: If you’ll be out of a room for more than 5 minutes, turn off the lights; or away from the computer for more than ½ hour, turn it off. This costs nothing and saves money.

2. Programmable thermostats. A small investment in programmable thermostats can save well more than they cost. Timing heating and cooling activities to occupancy can dramatically reduce electricity use.

3. Air Dry. Depending upon alti-tude, this region’s climate is great for hang-drying clothes several months of the year. Hanging clothes on the line can be a meditation and it’s a lot less expensive than a dryer load. Invest-ment: about 15 minutes per load to hang and remove.

4. Light it up! When it’s time to replace light bulbs, make sure the new ones are CFL’s, Compact Fluorescents. The energy savings on a $3 CFL over old light bulbs can be as much as $20 and it lasts 3-5 times as long as old bulbs. The color rendering has also gotten much better than early CFLs.

5. Beware of Vampires! Vampire loads, that is. When not in use, small electronics chargers such as mobile phone and PDA plug-ins still draw or leak electricity. Consider power-cutting surge protector units that can regulate or turn-off the line voltage draw of electronics. The Energy Information Ad-

ministration estimates that in the US alone more than $3 billion annually in electricity use is due to Vampire loads. If this economy has you in a pinch, just unplug the chargers when unplugging the phone or device.

6. Buy Energy Star. Eventually that old fridge or washer is going to expire. Be sure to replace them with Energy Star appliances that save users billions of dollars annually. The www.energystar.gov website lists both home and of-fice Energy Star appliances and equipment.

7. Harvest natural light. If a remodel or tax refund makes it possible to install light tubes (small engineered sky lights such as Solatube™) they’re an incredible investment. Not only do they fill a space with natural light, reducing the need for electric

light, the natural light within the space is better for the occupant experience.

8. Reduce/Eliminate plastic bag use. What does this have to do with en-ergy you ask? Everything. Virgin plastic bags are made from petroleum. They re-quire a great deal of energy to make and even more to recycle. A reduction in this energy intensity is a reduction in the need for coal-produced electricity to fabricate, transport and eventually recycle. Stash a few sturdy fabric bags (preferably organic cotton, hemp or recycled fibers) in your car or bike. They hold more, look and feel better and require substantially less energy to produce.

9. Carpool or Bus it. Even though gas prices have fallen recently, this relief is only temporary. From fossil fuel reduc-

tion to less traffic and smog on the roads, this is an important step. If your employer supports distance work, home offices save a lot of fuel/energy and commute time, netting greater employee wellness.

When the day seems longer than usual and you can-not get to sleep, try a cup of chamomile herbal tea.

In addition to its calming properties that help ease anxiety and insomnia, chamomile has a long history in serving as a digestive ailment, anti-inflammatory and easing spasm and discomfort in the digestive tract.

The chamomile flower, from the sun-flower family, is most often consumed in the form of a bitter herb tea infusion, and can also be found in liquid form and pills. The infusion can be applied externally to reduce minor skin irritation because of its mild antiseptic effect. Ingestion of the dried flowers has an emetic effect, possi-

bly inducing vomiting when administered orally or by injection. An emetic is used medically where a substance has been ingested and must be expelled from the body immediately.

The list of ailments that the herb can assist with seems to go on and on: indi-gestion; canker sores; colic; conjunctivi-tis, eye irritations; Crohn’s disease; diar-rhea; eczema; gingivitis; hemorrhoids; menstrual disorders; migraine; irritable bowel syndrome; peptic ulcer; skin irrita-tions; ulcerative colitis; minor wounds, to name several.

There is some conflict whether cham-omile is safe to use during pregnancy. Some women find it safe in moderation to quell nausea caused during pregnancy, relieve heartburn and help with discom-fort during sleep. The controversy, though, is that the herb is known to be a mild emmenagogue, an herb that can stimu-late blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus. For women who are not pregnant, chamomile may be helpful in stimulating menstrual flow when it is absent for rea-sons such as hormonal imbalance.

Because chamomile is part of the Asteraceae plant family, which includes ragweed and chrysanthemum, people with allergies may react when they use chamomile. The herb also contains cou-marin, a naturally-occurring compound with anticoagulant or blood-thinning

effects. It should not be combined with other medications or supplements that have the same effect or be used by people with bleeding disorders.

Those allergic to ragweed may also experience an allergy to chamomile. A common reaction is an itchy mouth and swollen throat. To test this allergy, chew a pinch of chamomile then spit it out. If your mouth feels itchy or irritated, you should most likely avoid this herb. Of course, con-sult a doctor with any further concerns.

Looking for love in all the wrong places…well, what do you expect? The ILLUSION of love is rampant. Songs on the radio, television

shows, and movies tell us that love comes in a cute, little box with a big diamond inside; is blonde-haired, blue-eyed, and buxom; or tall, dark and handsome; sex sells. The beautiful girl or handsome guy look like great packages on the outside but have nothing in common with you, or each other.

The media portrays ideal love as easy to find because it “appears” that everyone has found it except you. All you have to do is enter a list of characteristics and in

a few, short clicks; E-Harmony will find your soul mate! These idyllic examples of love have most people mistaking beauty, expensive gifts, and big houses as the real thing. They end up in unhealthy relation-ships characterized by feelings of stress, negative self-talk, depletion of energy, or exhibit codependent traits whereby each partner derives his/her sense of self from the other.

Ask yourself this: Do I need a relation-ship or want one? “Needing” is looking outside ourselves for someone else to make us happy. “Wanting” is icing on an already delicious cake. Making that cake delicious comes from looking inside, be-ing honest, and removing the self-made obstacles that are created in order to keep others away.

Obstacles:• Kids, pets, work, old boy/girlfriends.• Eating too much (extra padding –no

one can get too close), sloppy dress, poor hygiene.• Looking/acting too perfect.• Self-judgment, “I’m not good enough.” • No one is ever perfect enough (who can compete with George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, or the white picket fence?).• Too needy– people will run far, far away when they pick up on it; or worse, stay close in order to take advantage of you.• Difficult behavior.

What remains after removing the obstacles is self love, which is not about narcissism, vanity, or self-indulgence; it is treating your self with compassion, respect, and self-acceptance.

Self-Love Tips• Take breaks. Go outside, breathe, notice flowers, the grass, or glistening snow.• Treat yourself to a movie, good book, quiet bath.• Exercise; eat good, wholesome food.• One-minute meditation - focusing on

breath coming in / out of your nose. • Pay attention to your needs; learn how to set boundaries.• Allow yourself to feel lonely without needing to eat, smoke, drink, or be with other people. • Have a good cry.• Allow fear, accept it & move through it.• Consciously loving all of you, even your warts!• Affirmations – Say out loud and look into your eyes, “I love you, your name here.”• Practice lots of hugging – to give is to receive.• Buy yourself some flowers.• Spend time alone; get to know your-self.• Masturbate – Connects you with YOU. Upon finding love, you can tell your partner the important details.

When you are ready to shed the per-formance, drop the show and defenses, and just be you, another person will then be able to love you in your nakedness,

unconditionally. With time and practice, loving yourself will come natural and you will have readied yourself to accept love from another and show them un-conditional love in return. Real, loving relationships feel nurturing, promote emotional and spiritual growth, increase your self-esteem, and feel supportive.

“Looking for love in all the wrong places,” rings true whenever we seek it outside of ourselves. You need less when you provide for yourself first. Here’s wish-ing you icing on your cake – true love and happiness – in all stages of your journey.

PETS

LTH

Y

Nothing says unconditional love like the companion-ship of a furry family member. Most people will agree their pets add daily joy to their life; however, recent research shows that having a pet has a very

positive impact on several aspects of our health as well.

The most obvious way pets impact our lives is their ability to elevate our mood. It is nearly impossible to remain in a bad mood when you walk through the door to an anxiously await-ing dog, or when your cat snuggles up in your lap during your favorite TV show.

Pets also lower blood pressure and serve as a good stress reducer. Walking with a pet helps sooth nerves and allows for some relaxation in a hectic world. Worldwide studies have proven that the impact of a stressful situation is lesser on pet owners, especially males. Studies conducted on women when they’re in a stressful situation showed that when their pet was present their blood pressure was lower than when friends were present.

The benefit of having a pet does not stop there. It has been proven that they help prevent heart disease. Not only do pets provide people with faithful companionship, research suggests they may also assist in greater psychological stability from feeling depressed or lonely. Pet owners also have lower levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides, all of which are large measures of protection from heart disease.

Pet owners tend to have fewer medical appointments and minor health problems. Patients in nursing homes have shown to lessen the intake of prescription drugs and the overall costs of caring for the patient has dropped when pets have been a

part of the therapy. Owning a pet is motivation to go out and exercise therefore positively affecting our overall health. This, in turn, keeps pet owners out of the hospital for minor medical conditions.

Have you ever sensed that your pet knows something you don’t? You’re probably right. Various people who have periodic seizures, reported that their dogs can sense the seizure com-ing long before they can even feel it. Today, dogs are trained to recognize a type of change, prior to a seizure, and therefore are able to warn their owner 15-45 minutes before the seizure begins. These dogs are called “seizure-alert” or “seizure-response” dogs.

Dogs have also been trained to identify when a person with Parkinson’s is “freezing.” Freezing is one of the many symptoms of Parkinson’s where the feet freeze in place while the rest of the body continues moving, resulting in a fall. By touching the person’s foot the dog breaks the freeze and enables their owner to regain their balance.

If that isn’t enough, dogs are beginning to be trained to de-tect cancer. In the 1990’s an experimental program was done to see if a dog could be trained to smell the disease. The dog detected malignant melanoma skin tumors with nearly 100% accuracy. As a result, researchers from Cambridge University are studying the use of dogs to detect the smell of prostate cancer in the urine of males.

Although many animals are trained to do extraordinary things, animals bring unconditional love, compassion, and companionship into one’s life. For all age groups, caring for a pet provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment while lessening the feelings of loneliness and isolation. Pets are not only good friends, they are good medicine! Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a comprehensive, integrative psychotherapy approach. The goal of EMDR is to elevate human suf-fering and assist individuals to strive for wholeness, as

well as a healthy lifestyle, in the shortest period of time, while also maintaining a client’s safety and stability within a social system.

In a controlled study, 80 percent of multiple civilian trauma victims no longer had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after approximately six hours of treatment. A study of combat veterans reported that after 12 sessions, 77 percent no longer had PTSD. More than 20 controlled studies have investigated the effects of EMDR, and all of them consistently found that EMDR effectively decreased or eliminated symptoms of post-traumatic stress for the majority of the clients. Even though researchers concentrated on the effects of EMDR on PTSD, clinicians have reported success using EMDR in the treatment of personality disorders, panic attacks, grief, pain disorders, eating disorders, addiction, performance anxiety, sexual and physical abuse, and body dysmorphic disorders.

A typical EMDR treatment therapy for chil-dren and for adults consists of 12 sessions; each session lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. The number of sessions will be determined by the therapist and depends upon the specific problem and client history. However, repeated controlled studies have shown that a single trauma can be processed within three sessions in 80 percent to 90 percent of participants. While every disturbing event need not be processed, the amount of therapy will depend upon the complexity of an individual’s history.

A successful outcome of EMDR therapy is that the normal information process is resumed; the client will still remember the event, but in a less upsetting way, and will therefore no

longer relive the images, sounds, smells, and feelings as he or she experienced them prior to treatment. After successful treat-ment with EMDR, affective distress is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated and physiological arousal is reduced.

EMDR uses an eight-phase approach. In the first phase, the therapist obtains history, assesses the client’s readiness for EMDR and develops a treatment plan. Both the client and therapist identify possible targets for EMDR processing; these include recent distressing events, current situations that elicit emotional disturbances, related historical incidents, and the development of specific skills and behaviors that will be needed by the client in future situations.

During the second phase of treatment, the therapist ensures that the client has adequate methods of handling emotional dis-tress and good coping skills, and that the client is in a relatively stable state. If further stabilization is required, or if additional skills are needed, therapy focuses on providing these. The client is then able to use stress-reducing techniques whenever neces-sary, during or between sessions. However, one goal is not to need these techniques once therapy is complete.

In phases three through six, a target is iden-tified and processed using EMDR procedures. These involve the client identifying the most vivid visual image related to the memory (if available), a negative belief about self, related emotions, and body sensations. The client also identifies a preferred positive belief. After this, the client is instructed to focus on the image, negative thought, and body sensations while

simultaneously moving his or her eyes back and forth follow-ing the therapist’s fingers as they move across his/her field of vision for 20 to 30 seconds or more, depending upon the needs of the client. Although eye movements are the most commonly used external stimulus, therapists often use auditory tones, tapping, or other types of tactile stimulation. The client

is instructed to just notice whatever hap-pens. After this, the clinician instructs the client to let his/her mind go blank and to notice whatever thoughts, feelings, images, memories, or sensations come to mind.

Depending upon the client’s report, the clinician will facilitate the next stage of attention. In most cases, a client-directed association process is encouraged. This is repeated numerous times throughout the session. If the client becomes distressed or has difficulty with the process, the therapist fol-lows established procedures to help the client resume processing. When the client reports no distress related to the targeted memory, the cli-nician asks him/her to think of the preferred positive be-lief that was identified at the beginning of the session, or a better one if it has emerged, and to focus on the incident, while simultaneously engag-ing in the eye movements.

After several sets, clients generally re-port increased confidence in this positive belief. The therapist checks with the client regarding body sensations. If there are negative sensations, these are processed as above. If there are positive sensations, they are further enhanced.

In phase seven – closure – the therapist asks the client to keep a journal during the week to document any related issues that may arise and reminds the client of the self-calming activities that were mastered in phase two. Phase eight is a re-evaluation of previous sessions, and of the client’s progress since the last session.

EMDR treatment ensures the pro-cessing of all related historical events, current incidents that elicit distress and future scenarios that will require different responses. The overall goal is to produce the most comprehensive and profound treatment effects in the shortest period of time, while at the same time maintain

a stable client within a balanced system. After EMDR processing, clients generally report that the emotional distress related to the memory has been eliminated – or at least greatly decreased – and that they have gained important cognitive insights. Additionally, these emotional and cogni-tive changes usually result in spontane-ous behavioral and personal changes, which are further enhanced with standard EMDR procedures.

It is important to keep in mind that EMDR should be administered only by a trained clinician who successfully completed EMDR training – a two-part course. In addition, it is important to take time to interview your prospective clinician; it is crucial to make sure that the clini-cian is comfortable in treating your particular problem. It is also impor-tant that that you feel a sense of trust and rapport with your therapist. Every successful treatment is

the result of a combined effort between clinician and client, using appropriate methods.

So much is happening around us, it’s no wonder many people are experiencing challenges and in-creased levels of stress, anxiety,

exhaustion and feelings of uncertainty. As transitions take place, the period of unclarity can be unsettling, and yet with gentle support and nonjudgment, the caterpillar naturally transforms into a butterfly.

Clearing stress or getting to the bot-tom of what is causing anxiety can be analogous to cleaning a turkey pan at

Thanksgiving. The pan starts off dirty and greasy, which seemingly gets murkier as you scrub. The tough job of scrubbing loosens the stuck debris and then without a struggle the particles of the past easily rise to the surface. Inevitably the debris or stuck emotions clear away with continued persistence and your trust and knowing-ness is that this is just the process. Once you patiently move through the process, you end up with a shiny new pan that looks nothing like it did before.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a heal-ing method that supports people in moving through the grimy and murky uncertainty of where life has taken them. It is much more than a “coping” mechanism, as it is a supportive tool in self-empowerment. Reiki embodies the very essence and consciousness of the new planetary era we have been moving into by supporting release of the old. Suf-fering and discomforts one might experi-ence during the transition are minimized and peace of mind is re-established. We start to recognize how we are not at the mercy of anything. In overcoming these fears we receive personal growth support with unlimited potential.

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy, which stems from an unlimited supply that is always available to support us. It is non-invasive, gentle, yet powerful, and an easy-to-learn healing technique that promotes stress reduction and relaxation with many healing benefits. Reiki is a complimen-tary treatment that works in harmony to improve the effectiveness and benefits of all other types of therapy, treatment and healing modalities. It is not meant

to replace professional medical advice and Reiki practitioners do not diagnose or prescribe medication. Reiki helps to stimulate the body’s own natural healing abilities for both psychological and or-ganic diseases, while supporting a deep state of relaxation during that process.

Reiki is becoming more widely uti-lized and accepted; promoting more ease and swiftness in maneuvering into the coming era of increased peace and well-being. As western medicine continues exploring alternative methods of healing, Reiki is destined to play an important role as an accepted and valued healing prac-tice. It has the ability to aid movement towards powerful, co-created changes for personal and planetary evolution. Ac-cording to pioneer trend strategist, Gerald Celente, Founder of the Trends Research Institute and Publisher of the Trends Jour-nal, the “Heal Yourself Health Care” trend will become widely embraced and prove rewarding to the public.

It is evident that self-empowered, natural healing methods, such as Reiki, are having wide-spread influence and growth in today’s world. Reiki is one such means of support that can provide navigation in today’s world of unclarity, thus supplying hope for tomorrow while promoting peace for today.

Hot stone massage is similar to a Swedish massage, but incorporates smooth, flat, basalt stones, heated usually by water.

The heated stones are strategically placed on the body. Stones vary in size and purpose – the largest stones, about 5-6 inches long, are used on the lower back and sometimes placed in the palm of the client’s hand. Medium-sized stones, about 3-4 inches, are set on specific places on the back – along the medians or chakras (life lines that run throughout the body). These stones can also be used as tools by the therapist - for added pressure and warmth as the massage continues. Small stones, about 1-2 inches, can be placed between the toes, fingers and be used in facial massage.

The heat of the stones is very soothing and penetrates down to help relieve muscle tension. A deeper massage is more easily attained once the tissue is warmed. After removing the stones, the massage therapist massages the client with oil.

Stone massage, which can also be performed with cooled stones, is centuries old. As long as three thousand years ago, throughout ancient China and India, warmed stones were used in religious rituals as well as diagnosing disease.

Basalt stones or volcanic rock has been the massage stone of choice by many. Basalt contains a high amount of iron which helps keep the stone hotter for longer periods of time.

If you suffer from stress and tension, this massage method is an excellent answer for deeper relief from pain and body aches!

Some people who experience a stroke–the loss of blood flow to part of the brain–lose the vision and physical sen-sations on one side of their body. Depending upon the location of the stroke, it may also affect their awareness

of these sensory losses. For example, if I place an eyepatch over one of your eyes, you will be aware of the fact that your field of vision has been impaired. You will most likely compensate for this loss of vision by looking around more carefully before you walk, trying to see what you don’t see. You are conscious of your impairment. But this is not the case with some stroke victims. For them, what they do not see does not exist. If they’re in a hospital room, the half of the room that they see is the whole room to them. They see and read only half of a page in a magazine, yet think it is the whole page. They may even put makeup on just one half of their face (and they’re not trying to be funny). The half of their body that still has sensations is for them their whole body. Through rehabilitation they may

Jungian Dreamwork Series:

Consciousness

Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

gradually rediscover the other half of their physical being, a half that, frankly, feels no more a part of them than the table next to their bed. Even in the best rehabilitative environment their awareness and consciousness will often come the hard way–through tripping over and bumping into things.

A very similar situation plays out in our relationship to the shadow. In its broadest sense, the shadow is the disowned and undeveloped part of our personality. It is our unacknowl-edged other half, composed of thoughts and feelings, attitudes, instinctual tendencies, and potentialities (both creative and destructive) that have been excluded from our sense of self. For example, if I identify with my strength and adult maturity, then my vulnerability and childlike nature will reside in my shadow. (An excellent example of this dynamic can be found in the movie, “The Kid.”) As the denied and neglected side of our larger personality, the shadow is similar to the “forgotten” side of the stroke victim’s body. Most of the time we are not even aware of its existence until we have bumped into and tripped over it a few times.

Our shadow makes itself known to us in a variety of ways. We bump into it in our dreams, in our relationships with other people, and through our physical and emotional illnesses. It is important to remember that the shadow is the unacknowledged and unlived life within the psyche. Like the shoot of a tree that pushes up the pavement in search of sunlight, so the shadow will seek the light of consciousness through peaceful or disruptive means. One of the more pervasive but typically unrecognized ways that we encounter the shadow is through the process of projection. In projection we react to elements of our own psychology encountered in the behaviors of other people or in other outer life events. Here are some examples.

A man at midlife developed an irrational fear of driving on mountain roads. He became obsessed with thoughts of skidding off the side of the road, being driven off the road, and on occa-sion, of purposely plunging over the embankment to his death. His fears made no sense to him; he had driven over the very same roads for years without any more than normal concern for his safety. He tried to reason with himself as best he could, assure and reassure himself, but all to no avail. Troubled and humbled by his powerlessness over his thoughts, he decided to get help.

When there is a change that needs to take place in our lives, a new way of living or of understanding ourselves, it is sometimes symbolized as going over an edge. We may dream of driving off a road, falling off a cliff, or hanging onto the ledge of a mountain. This particular man had to go over an edge in his own life. He needed to expand his sense of self so that other positive but unlived aspects of his personality might find expression. Because he was egocentric in his viewpoint and unconscious of his inner life, his psychological process was pro-jected onto outer life. He developed an irrational fear of driving over edges because he needed to grow beyond the boundaries of his current worldview. His intrusive fantasies involved im-

ages of death because his psychological process involved the death of an outworn approach to life. When he understood the symbolic message of his symptoms, and made the necessary changes in his life, his fears subsided and he was able to drive comfortably once again.

A man dreamed that his wife was hav-ing an affair with one of her coworkers, a man he perceived to be very materialistic in his approach to life. Following the dream he became more suspicious and irritable towards his wife, certain that the dream was giving him information about her. Ironically, and as is usually the case with these types of dreams, the dream was more about himself than his wife. The other man in the dream symbolized the dreamer’s own materialis-tic attitudes. His wife was a symbol of his feelings, and her attraction to the coworker symbolized his own unconscious attrac-tion to money and social status. What appeared to be a dream about the un-faithfulness of his spouse was in reality a dream about his unfaithfulness to his own soul. Had he realized this, he might have been able to address his issues and marriage relationship with greater consciousness. The fact that he didn’t contributed to his wife’s decision to leave him for another man. Sadly, her own unconsciousness led to the very activities he had suspected of her. Projection is pervasive and insidious in relationships. Without consciousness it is easy to fall into the roles that others project onto us from the dramas of their inner life.

Documents recently released by the Nixon Library add more definition to the picture of a man obsessed with protecting his power as president of the United States. The tapes and documents show that his minions were instructed to dig up as much dirt as possible on his

opponents and critics, and to keep him informed of even the most inconsequen-tial protests to the war in Vietnam. His behavior was typical of a man obsessed with power. Although his concerns were not without warrant–many people were against the war and his handling of it–his paranoia bordered on the extreme and contributed to the illegal wiretapping he authorized.

When someone’s personality has been hijacked by a power-driven ego, it is not uncommon for that person to have dreams of being chased or attacked. Sym-bolically, these dreams show the uncon-

scious is trying to reign in the errant and inflated ego. If president Nixon was at war with his unconscious, it is instructive to ask how his inner life molded his interpretations of national and world events through the process of projection. It is also interesting to see how his psychology coincided with the social unrest and conflict of the nation he led. Or, nearer to home, how a president who sees life in simplistic, black and white terms, seems to inflame similar

polarities in the nation he governs. A social psy-

chologist might ask, “Which comes first, the psychology of the leader, or the psychology of the nation he/she leads?” From the perspective of Jungian psychology, the two go hand-in-hand, a mesmerizing dance of complementary projections. Only through greater con-sciousness, ownership of our shadow, and the withdrawal of our projections, does the dance ever change. Here’s to conscious dancing.

Retirement Planning

Written by Steve Lindquist

Retirement — The Dream: After a lifetime of hard work — raising the kids, the bills, and building a stable and secure life — you and your spouse will be able to enjoy your golden years doing the things you’ve always dreamed about.

Retirement — The Reality: It might be years of fun and leisure, but retirement can also be a time of financial dif-ficulties, compounded by illness and loneliness.

An overly harsh view? Perhaps, but it’s prudent to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. That’s why married couples need to arrange for their own (and each other’s) retirement security as early as possible.

Three Stages of RetirementStage 1 — Life as a healthy, retired couple. This is the ideal, the retirement dream that most couples envision. If they’ve planned well, they’ll have the money to do everything they’ve dreamed

about doing. Unfortunately, “dreaming” is about as far as retirement planning goes for too many people.

Stage 2 — Living with a prolonged illness, possibly a series of them, as health deteriorates in later years. When one partner’s health begins to fail, the other becomes the caregiver. Worse, medical bills begin to soar which can devastate your nest egg.

Stage 3 — One partner dies, possibly leaving the survi-vor in a financially threatened position, unless proper plans have been made.

Planning Is the KeyThe key to coping with the potential financial dif-

ficulties of retirement is early planning. If you and your spouse are aware of and prepared for these three stages of retirement, you shouldn’t run the risk of outliving your retirement funds. You’ll want to consider the fol-lowing:

• Draft a will with your attorney and keep it current.

• Take time to map out a retirement game plan together. Identify common goals and determine the methods for achieving them. The closer you are to retirement, the more specific your plans should be.

• Share information and responsibilities. Make sure both of you know where all the financial records are and how to access them.

• Send dollars ahead. Know the benefits of your pension and retirement plans, and social security. Then begin to build up a supplemental fund of your own.

• Plan to properly conserve your estate. A will can only go so far. Estate taxes may erode a substantial part of your lifetime legacy

• Prepare for all possibilities. Life insurance, long-term care insurance and disability insurance (during working years) can be excellent ways to protect your retirement dreams.

• Have trusted professionals. It’s important to develop relation-ships with experts in several areas — legal, tax, insurance, and financial professionals are the people who can help you map out and fund your retirement plan.

Myth: Hearing loss affects only “old people” and is just another sign of aging.

Fact: Hearing loss affects all age groups. There are close to 6 million people in the United States between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss and more than one million are school-age. Actually, only 35 percent of people with hearing loss are older than age 64.

Myth: The best way to clean ears is to use Q-tips.

Fact: Ear nose and throat physicians, audiologists, and those in the hearing healthcare field, without exception, do not advise the use of Q-tips for cleaning ears. Using Q-tips is dangerous and can result in damage to the ear canal and ear-drum. They simply push the debris further into the ear, making them not effective for cleaning wax from the ears. The old saying, “do not put anything into your ear except your elbow” is good advice.

Myth: I have one bad ear, but the other ear is okay.

Fact: Although possible, this situation is unlikely. Most patients who believe that

they have one “good’ ear actually have two “bad” ears. When one ear is slightly

better than the other, individuals learn to favor that ear for the telephone

and group conversations. This can give the illusion that “the

better ear” is normal when it isn’t. Most types of hearing loss affect both ears fairly equally, and most patients are in need of hearing in-struments for both ears.

Myth: If I start to use hearing aid technology, my hear-

ing will get worse due to the extra noise exposure from the amplification of loud sounds.

Fact: Modern hearing instruments are individually custom fit to amplify soft sounds that patients need to hear, and they can be adjusted by an audiologist to provide very little if any amplification for loud sounds. An exception to this would be the mail-order hearing devices ad-vertised on the Internet and infomercials which are of poor quality and very easily

could cause further hearing damage.

Myth: If I had hearing loss, my family doctor certainly would have told me.

Fact: Not true! Research has demon-strated that only 14 percent of physicians routinely screen for hearing loss during a physical. Looking in the ear canal for ex-cessive wax, infection, or foreign bodies does not provide information about hear-ing. Most people with hearing impairment hear well in a quiet environment like a doctor’s office so it is virtually impossible for your physician to recognize the extent of your problem. It is important to ask your doctor for a referral to an audiolo-gist for a complete evaluation if you are experiencing a problem.

The clear links between dental health and heart disease just got a lot stronger, which may now be a motivational factor for many to improve oral hygiene. People with bleeding gums allow entry of up to 700 different types of

bacteria directly into their circulation, increasing the risk for a heart attack. The new research was presented by several groups at the Society for General Microbiology’s autumn meeting held at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

Dr. Steve Kerrigan from the Royal College of Surgeons ex-plained how this works, “If you have an open blood vessel from bleeding gums, bacteria will gain entry to your bloodstream. When bacteria get into the bloodstream they encounter tiny fragments called platelets that clot blood when you get a cut. By sticking to the platelets bacteria cause them to clot inside the blood vessel, partially blocking it. This prevents the blood flow back to the heart and we run the risk of suffering a heart attack….In other words it doesn’t matter how fit, slim or healthy you are, you’re adding to your chances of getting heart disease by having bad teeth.”

Kerrigan’s research team presented new findings showing that once bacteria enter circulation they actually use platelets to form a protective shield around themselves so as to hide from your immune system or a germ-killing compound. This causes little “mini clots” to form, which are more likely to stick together in a larger clot and cause a heart attack.

Other research presented at the conference focused on how bacteria lead to plaque formation in the arteries. Profes-sor Greg Seymour from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand looked into a new angle on this issue and discovered that common stress-response proteins pro-

duced by both bacteria and inflamed human cells tend to confuse the human immune system. This leads to immune cells inappropriately targeting the inflamed cells lining the circulatory system, a factor that helps drive the process of artery hardening. Thus, a confused,

overworked, and inefficient immune system response to ongoing low grade infection from poor dental hygiene could be a major risk factor for plaque accumulation in the arteries.

The two studies taken together provide several mechanisms by which poor oral hygiene leads directly to heart disease. While this concept has been reported for a number of years, these precise mechanisms that explain the process are new and open doors to pro-tecting yourself.

Clearly, brushing your teeth and flossing takes on a new priority. Clearing out debris in your circulatory

system will help your immune system work better and platelets not stick together, protecting the lining of your

arteries with fat soluble antioxidants (vitamin E), and using natural germ fighters (like oregano oil) will be the foundation of this approach. Many other factors could easily interact with these mechanisms, including toxins from any source including pollution, too many inflammatory stress chemicals, and your immune system struggling with other infections (especially low grade chronic infections). This data also means that an acute infection could tax this already strained system and trigger a heart attack.

In a heavy kettle or Dutch oven: Sauté 1 large leek (the white part), in 3 tbsp. of organic olive oil, until trans-lucent or about 10 min. over medium high heat.

Add the red potatoes, carrots, pars-nip, garlic and tomatoes to the pot.

Cook and stir for 5 min. then add the sea salt and cracked fresh pepper, chicken broth, organic vegetable juice or V-8 juice, dried thyme and dried basil.

Bring to a boil and then turn down to simmer for 30 min/ or until tender.

If you prefer, at this point add cooked rice or orzo. Also other veg-etables like cooked navy beans, onions instead of leeks, zucchini, and summer squash can be used.

For a thicker soup, you can mash some of the veggies in the kettle at the end of cooking.

Ingredients:

1 cup all purpose baking flour 3/4 cup milk 1 beaten egg 2 Tbsp melted butter 1/4 tsp sea salt1 1/4 tsp organic baking powder1 tsp. organic sugar

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Heat a 10 inch pan (oiled) over med. high heat. Use a soup ladle to pour mixture into pan. Let bubbles appear and at this point you may drop fresh fruit of your choice on the pancakes, then turn the pancake and brown the other side. Blueberries are delicious, as are sliced strawberries and sliced bananas. It usually only takes a few minutes to brown the pancake.

to find yourself struggling to keep your eyes open and your brain in operation mode before the morning ever really starts. The problem may not be in the amount of sleep you’re getting, but rather in the food you’re putting into your body.

Just as there are many foods that can bring your day to a

options that can jump-start your day—and no, caffeine is not on the list.

Before diving into specific energy-generating foods, there are some basic diet-related factors that may help guide you throughout the day. If you begin to feel the weight of your eyelids or your head nodding, it may be because you’re dehydrated, so skip the coffee and grab a glass of water. In fact, that cup of Joe could be the problem—drinking too

much caffeine can actual ly make

you feel more t i red in the long run, so limit your in-take to about one cup a day. Also, a rule of thumb: more p ro te in and fewer carbs is always better. Your body needs

protein to keep organs functioning

and energy levels up, while eating too

many carbs can slow you down. But don’t eliminate

carbs completely—they are what keep your blood sugar levels balanced throughout the day, which in turn makes you feel awake. Be sure you’re eat-ing the right amount of healthy carbs. It’s also key to listen to your body—eat when you’re hungry. If you keep pushing lunch back until you’re about to faint, your blood sugar levels

will plummet and so will your energy.

Overall, a healthy and balanced diet with fresh, minimally processed foods will give you drastically more energy than a diet of mostly processed food. Specifi-cally, adding the following eight foods to your diet will rev up your energy. (NOTE: Eating the certified organic versions of these foods will increase their energy-boosting power even more.)

1. Lean Beef or Chicken (ideally free-ranged)

Lean protein contains tyrosine, an amino acid that helps your brain produce the chemicals norepinephrine and dopamine, which improve your mental function. Tur-key, pork tenderloin, eggs, shellfish and sardines also contain tyrosine.

2. Black Beans Complex carbohydrates like those in black beans and other legumes help keep your blood sugar levels balanced throughout the day, providing a steady, slow-burning source of energy to make you feel awake. Plus, black beans are a rich source of iron—an integral part of hemoglobin—which transports oxygen in the body.

3. Seaweed Seaweeds like kelp, wakame, arame and dulse can be found in Asian grocery stores and health food stores. It can be eaten dried, straight out of the bag, or added to soups, salads and vegetables. Seaweed contains the broadest range of minerals of any food—the same minerals found in the ocean and in human blood. It also contains pantothenic acid and riboflavin—two B-vitamins needed for your body to produce energy.

4. AlmondsThese tasty nuts are rich in manganese and copper, both of which are essential cofactors of an enzyme called superoxide dismutase. This enzyme helps keep energy flowing by inhibiting free radicals inside cells’ mitochondria (the energy-producing area of cells). Plus, they also contain riboflavin, another important component of energy production.

5. Cantaloupe This melon is an exceptional energy food be-cause of its combination of vitamin B6, dietary fiber, folate, and niacin (vitamin B3). The B vitamins (necessary for the body to process sugars and carbs) combined with fiber (which helps the sugars be distributed gradually) support energy production by keeping blood sugar levels stable.

6. KiwiThis tiny fruit often gets overlooked in favor of the more common apple or orange, but it packs a powerful punch. With more vitamin C than an equal amount of orange, it’s a po-tent energy-boosting food. When vitamin C levels are depleted, people often feel tired. Other foods rich in vitamin C include raw red or green pepper, broccoli, strawberries and Brussels sprouts.

7. Oatmeal This morning favorite is loaded with soluble fiber, a key to slowing down carbohydrate absorption and keeping blood sugar levels steady.

8. Water We know, it’s not really a food, but it’s so important that we decided to include it anyway. Water is necessary for your body to produce energy, including digesting, absorb-ing and transporting nutrients. If plain water doesn’t appeal to you, try spicing it up with a squeeze of lemon, lime or other citrus.

Do you get sick a great deal in the fall and winter months? Many people believe that merely washing your hands more of-

ten should do the trick to keep illnesses at bay. But actually, there are many other factors which come into play toward keeping healthy. If you are a person who tends to catch every cold or flu that comes along, here are some tips that really work for avoiding viruses:

• Avoid eating processed foods and refined sugars. Fall and winter months are times when people tend to eat more sugary and processed foods due to holi-day activities and gatherings. Sugar is a poison to your body and lowers immune system function. This includes foods such as crackers, chips, most breads, bagels, pastas, cookies, desserts, candy, juice, and soda pop, to name a few. All of these items contribute to lowered immune system and poor health. A good rule of thumb to follow is, if it is not a whole food, avoid eating it regularly. Load up on real, raw, whole foods for snacks and meals alike.

• Continue to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables – especially those in sea-son in your local area. Vegetables and fruits are high in nutrients and antioxi-dants which help thwart the development of disease and illness.

• Drink plenty of filtered water (mineral water is a plus). Keep a glass container with you throughout the day and sip fre-quently rather than trying to gulp down several ounces at a time. Avoid plastic containers, tap water, and bottled water. Tap water contains toxins and plastic con-tains pthalates—both of which supress the immune system and health.

• Make sure you are taking good-quality supplements to fill in the holes where your diet leaves off. Whole-food based, organically produced vitamins and nu-trients are the best variety. Don’t skimp on this important component of your health and purchase cheap varieties of these items. Ask a qualified health care practitioner to recommend something for your individual needs.

• Be certain to take a good probiotic each day. Good brands include PB8, Biotics Research, Jarrow, Nature’s Life liquid probiotics (great for kids), and Prescript-Assist for especially low im-mune function.

• Be certain to take fiber each day. Good brands include Sonne’s, Fiber Fusion by Enzymatic Therapy, and Colon Plus by Biotics Research. Digestive enzymes are a plus as well as they provide digestive enzymes to make certain your food is properly digested and absorbed. A good brand is Digest Gold by Enzymedica. Remember – health begins and ends in the digestive tract. If you are not eating healthy foods, your health will suffer.

• Be certain to take essential fatty acids each day. Good brands include SIBU, Nordic Naturals, and Solgar.

• Watch intake of alcoholic beverages, which tend to increase during holiday months. Drinking excess alcohol can have adverse affects on appetite, blood sugar, blood pressure and cardiovascu-lar function, metabolic processes, and weight. If you are a binge drinker during special occasions, cut yourself off after two drinks and make certain you are eat-ing healthy foods and drinking plenty of water at the same time.

• Make sure you are getting adequate rest and not overextending yourself. If necessary, say no to extra tasks that you know you really won’t have time or energy to accomplish. Stay home on a night when you might normally go out; rest, relax, catch up, and go to bed early (by 10 p.m.).

• Set aside time for some regular exer-cise, preferably outdoors. In the colder

months people tend to go to health clubs more. Many more germs and toxins lurk indoors during colder months, so bundle up and go for a walk, hike, or bike ride. You’ll be pleased with how exhilarated you feel afterward. If you are a winter sport enthusiast, get out on the slopes and go skiing, snowshoeing, or snowboarding. If you are an equine enthusiast, make time to get out on your horse or a friend’s mount during weather that is not icy.

• Set aside time for contemplation, stress reduction, and relaxation. Whether that is a hot bath, a massage, tai chi, yoga, stretching, meditation or some other method you prefer, make sure you give yourself this time to re-charge.

• If you do get sick, load up on probiotics, vegetables, fruits, and other raw foods. Take time to pamper yourself, rest and put off things that aren’t necessary so you can get back to a state of health quicker and easier.

• Avoid going to a doctor who will prescribe pharma-ceutical drugs and antibiotics. These substances rarely help your body to get better sooner, and actually cause nutrient depletion and lowered immune system function by wiping out friendly bacteria that is vital to health. For information on nutrient depletion caused by drugs, read Supplement Your Prescription: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About Nutrition by Dr. Hyla Cass, M.D.

• If you cannot shake a cold, flu, or illness, consider visiting an alternative health care practitioner such as a chiropractor, naturopathic physician, or other qualified individual. These practitioners are often very successful in alleviating health issues and perform treatment based on the cause of the problem rather than just treating symptoms.

If you maintain a good schedule of eating healthy, avoiding processed foods and beverages, take proper supplementation, obtain moderate activity, exercise, rest, and relaxation, you will notice an enormous improve-ment in the way your health responds. You will have more energy, feel more productive, and avoid catching flus and colds.

There are many personal care prod-ucts including deodorants and antiperspirants on the shelves today. The trend is to make

deodorants and antiperspirants that smell like perfume. Have you ever considered what makes up the gel or white colored paste we slather under our arms to stay fresh and sweat free? Remember the com-mercial “Never let them see you sweat;” sweating is actually very healthy for you. It is our body’s way of getting rid of unwanted toxins. Toxins are also known as chemicals in body waste, and the by-product that is produced when organs metabolize what is ingested or topically applied.

Unfortunately all products are not created equal and many health and beauty items are full of toxic ingredients. Some of the most common ingredients found in deodorants and antiperspirants are: parabens, zirconium and aluminum.

Over the last eight years, sev-eral research studies have shown that various types of parabens act like estrogen when introduced to animal tissue cultures. Estro-gen has been known to drive the growth of cancer cells.

Research at Reading University has suggested there may be a link between the increase in breast cancer in the last 25 years which coincides with the introduction of antiperspirants. Breast cancer tu-mors in men and women tend to occur in the upper-outer section of the left breast, which could be because right-handed people apply more deodorant into their left armpit.

Some researchers think that by preventing sweating, you block the excretion of toxins which can build up in the lymph glands. Zirconium and aluminum in antiperspirants have also been found to enter cells and mutate DNA, which may lead to cancerous growth as well as disrupt hormone levels.

In addition to the above men-tioned ingredients, there are several other ingredients that are not listed on deodorant and an-tiperspirant labels. Fragrances and or scents for instance; are they synthetic or are they natural oils? Over the past decades more fragrances have been added to deodorants and antiperspirants. The scent of spice, the great outdoors, and lavender, to mention a few, may enhance the smell of deodorants but do they contribute to the effectiveness of the product? Are they toxic to our health?

There is of course a natural route; mineral salts have proven to be effective in stopping body odor and have been used to eliminate unpleasant body odor dating back to ancient civilizations. Mineral stones are available today in sprays, gels and bars.

Look for other “safe” choic-es, such as: deodorants made with vegetable glycerin, li-chen, herbs or herbal extracts, de-ionized water or distilled water, green tea, aloe Vera, baking soda and essential oils. All of these ingredients may be found in stick, spray or in a roll on format.

Remember, good health is a result of

choice – choose wisely!

YWhen it comes to back and neck pain chi-ropractors believe in treating the source of the problem. By checking the vertebrae for misalignment, it may be discovered that they

are unable to move and function as they were designed. These misaligned vertebraes are termed subluxation, fixa-tion or motion defects. If not treated, the end result is Nerve Impingement Syndrome. Ultimately this translates to ner-vous system interference resulting in pain or ill health. One shouldn’t have to rely on medications to get through the day; most may only mask the problem, instead of treating it.

ProAdjuster technology was created to keep up with people in today’s society who are consistently asking their bodies to perform at higher levels and who want to feel better, safely and naturally.

What is the ProAdjuster? The ProAdjuster chiropractic treatments are per-

formed comfortably, while sitting in an upright position without the need for turning or sudden movements. These treatments are safe and gentle for newborns, as well as the elderly with osteoporosis.

Significant advances in computer and engineering tech-nologies have allowed chiropractors to both analyze and treat the human body in such a way that has never been realized before.

How does it work? By placing a sensitive instrument at each vertebral level of

the spine, the doctor will apply very slight pressure. The instru-ment will accurately and comfortably measure the resistance of the vertebrae of your spine and record the data.

An algorithm* is formulated before a treatment can be designed. The computer screen will display a waveform that matches the resistance of the ver-tebrae. A normal vertebra would produce a sym-metrical bell-shaped waveform. A dysfunctional vertebral joint will produce erratic or aberrant waveforms; they may be too high, too low, or asymmetrical. These waveforms indicate the area and type of malfunction.

The doctor can now apply the treatment via the percussive instrument using a very light and steady pres-sure. When the computer registers 10 consecutive “taps”

measured equally, it knows that the vertebrae is less rigid and automatically stops the percussion. This information

allows the doctor to isolate and treat a problem area faster and more accurately than manual procedures. After the computerized treatment, the ProAdjuster’s sophisticated re-analysis allows both you and the doctor to chart your progress toward recovery.

* Algorithm-interprets a series of formulas or data and then gives the answer, much like a translator listening to 15 people speaking 15 different languages. Imagine if that were funneled

into a device that could take the information and translate it into one language that everyone could understand.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Diverticu-lar Disease are increasingly common problems seen in health clinics. Estimates indicate that between 25

and 40 million people experience these problems in the U.S. alone.

Although there are some differences between the formal diagnoses for each of these three problems, they share strong similarities in people’s experience of them. Common symptoms include:• Abdominal discomfort, bloating and

pain, particularly in the lower abdomen

• Chronic or recurrent diarrhea, con-stipation or both – either mixed or in alternation

• Fatigue accompanying the above two sets of symptoms

Contributing factors include a family history of similar problems, symptoms worsening with stress, and especially poor dietary habits.

Traditional treatments for these prob-lems focus on alleviating symptoms using

prescription drugs. However, a recent review of medical literature found no evidence that these drugs are effective for fixing the problem.

More recently, medical researchers have identified a connection between such intestinal symptoms and a set of non-allergic food intolerance reactions. Strictly speaking, these aren’t food aller-gies, but rather food sensitivities. There are important differences between the two. Here is a chart showing the differ-ences between them:

Manage Intestinal Symptoms Naturally

Written by Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

Food Allergies Food Sensitivities

• Reactions occur in minutes to several hours after eating reactive foods.

• Symptoms include hives, swelling of airways, asthma, anaphylaxis, vomiting, diarrhea and possible death.

• Allergies are rare, only 4 percent of the population experience this.

• As little as 1 molecule of the wrong food can cause reaction.

• Can be life-threatening.

• Usually there are only 1 or 2 allergic foods.

• RAST testing can identify the reactive foods.

• Treat by avoiding reactive foods, reading labels care-fully, asking questions when eating out.

• IgE antibody-mediated reactions to allergic foods (Type I).

• Reactions occur from 2 to 72 hours after eating reac-tive foods.

• Symptoms are complex and hard to pin down and can include IBS and other changes in bowel habits, joint pain, kidney problems, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, eczema, hives, obesity, and ADD/ADHD.

• 40 percent of Americans have these symptoms.

• Reaction depends on the amount of the reactive food eaten.

• Not life threatening, but symptoms often cause serious interruption of normal living.

• Multiple foods may be involved with each having dif-ferent levels of reactivity.

• Very difficult to identify which foods are causing – the delay time of up to 72 hours makes a food diary useless for spotting the offending foods. Mediator Release Testing is the only reliable way to identify offending foods.

• Treatment is patient-specific based on testing results.

• Reactions are mediated by IgG & IgM (Type III) and at the cellular level (Type IV – T-cells).

Page 39: February 2009 HB Mag

February 2009 39 For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Between the Type III and Type IV food sensitivities, Type IV is far more common and much more difficult to assess. The rea-son for this is that the reactions are mediated by T-cells and not by antibodies as in the Type I and Type III reactions.

In addition, each food has hundreds of sub-components, and symptoms can take up to 3 days to show up. Because of this, tech-niques such as food journaling can’t easily identify the likely problem foods, even with a serious rotation-type, food elimination diet.

One common feature of these inflamma-tory bowel diseases is reactions to processed and refined foods. At the top of this list are sugar in its many forms and flour (breads, pasta, etc.) One excellent way to test if these are the problem is to stop eating all pack-aged processed foods for several weeks. If these foods are the primary causes of the problem, symptoms generally improve.

If it were only this simple anyone could eliminate symptoms whenever they wanted. Unfortunately, there are at least 150 possible food triggers for inflammatory bowel prob-lems. Currently the best way to determine which foods are reactive for food sensitivities is a test called Mediator Responses Testing (MRT). MRT can specifically identify the reactive foods and the degree to which each food causes an adverse reaction. This information gives someone experienc-ing bowel-related problems the ability to eliminate foods that are causing problems. The response to making these changes can be surprisingly rapid. Sometimes symptoms subside within 3 to 4 days of stopping these reactive foods.

February is the month of hearts, flowers, romance, love and heart aches. When our heart is sad, it is gener-ally due to some form of loss– that devastating ache of something missing. Even though we typically think

of cupid in the month of February, thoughts of lost loves may also come to mind.

How do we cope when we experience emotions of pain and grief, especially when these emotions are accompanied by the sense of alienation and hopelessness? Loss is a basic human experience starting with birth, in leaving the warm environment of our mother’s womb. As we grow in age we leave behind toys, teachers, friends, pets, loved ones, places, relationships and in the end we ultimately leave our physical body. Life is terminal and every loss that we experience along our journey, no matter the intensity, is like a death.

Loss from divorce, deaths, jobs, homes, health issues, a planned future, a shared past, or a partnership all are deaths of some magnitude. In her book, On Death and Dying, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross distinguishes 5 stages of death.

Stage One: Denial and Isolation - In this stage you may be in shock, avoiding the issue, hoping that it will go away, or that some unforeseen event or entity will intervene and take the pain away.

You may be overwhelmed with a heavy heart. Detachment, loneliness and alienation can be present.

Stage Two: Anger and Rejecting - You may be volatile, defen-sive, struggling, and complaining. You can experience agony, suffering, blaming, fear, resentment, resistance, and guilt.

Stage Three: Bargaining – During bargaining you may have rescue fantasies. You may make believe cheeriness, hope, and reassurance. This can alternate with anxiety and fear.

Stage Four: Depression – You may feel like giving up and abandoning everything. You may have no energy or interest in everyday tasks. Helplessness and uselessness may be mixed with sheer fright. Grief sets in.

Stage Five: Acceptance – You experience peace and dignity. You can freely express sadness and it is not overwhelming.

The time frame in moving through each stage can sometimes be dependent on the magnitude of the loss. Regardless of the magnitude of the loss, it is different for each person. Keep in mind that you can get stuck in any one of these stages and or revisit a stage.

It is wise and helpful to get support when experiencing loss. If you find yourself stuck in one of the stages – detachment, anger, anxiety, or depression, it is even more critical to seek help.

Due to the complexity of each human being and their situation, there is no single approach when it comes to loss counseling. Yet, in a controlled study by San Francisco’s Kaiser Hospital, a modality for moving through loss, called Integrated Awareness®, showed promising results. In this study Integrated Awareness® accelerated and assisted in the innate sequencing for acceptance and healing.

IA® quiets the mind chatter. Through Integrated Awareness® one becomes clear and present. Clarity and ease replace suf-fering and confusion.

When one no longer resists, resents or rejects their current state – they will be at peace and in the present, and when in the present, one operates in a state of non-judgment and freedom. One becomes free to make different choices, and see new openings for taking action to feel satisfied and at ease. This allows one to accelerate and direct their life more powerfully. Efficiency and harmony increases helping them to move through and resolve their loss. Integrated Awareness® is a unique and brilliantly effective way to work through divorce, loss, illness and life transitions.

Healthy Solutions For You & Your Loved Ones

In today’s society, we are inundated with stress. Mental/emotional stress caused by rushing around all day, financial worries, and relationship

issues affects not only emotional health, but also insulin production and levels of reproductive, growth, and thyroid hor-mones. Chronic stress forces the adrenal glands to maintain high levels of the hor-mone cortisol, which can lead to adrenal fatigue, and symptoms such as weight gain, suppressed immune system, fatigue, insomnia, fuzzy thinking, osteoporo-sis, hypertension, depression, cravings and mood swings. Adrenal exhaustion can lead to much more serious health concerns. It is impossible for a person with tired adrenal glands to respond to the body’s needs or to achieve optimal hormonal balance. Recommendations to improve adrenal health include eating wholesome food, getting plenty of sleep, regular moderate exercise, stress manage-ment, slowing down to regain a proper perspective on life, and replacement of deficient nutrients and hormones.

If only the adrenal deficiency is treated without addressing deficiencies of other hormones, results may be disappointing. The analogy has been used that while the adrenal glands provide the gas, the thyroid gland is the body’s accelera-tor. Although the normal thyroid gland secretes two forms of thyroid hormone, T4 and T3, most hypothyroid patients are treated only with levothyroxine (synthetic T4). Despite treatment with levothyroxine, some hypothyroid patients remain symptomatic, and a combination of levothyroxine and T3 may be required for optimal thyroid replacement therapy. However, the only commercially avail-

able form of T3 for replacement therapy is synthetic liothyronine sodium. Liothyro-nine is an immediate release formulation which is rapidly absorbed, and may result in higher than normal T3 concentrations throughout the body causing serious side effects, including heart palpitations. The ideal medication might be a slow release T3 preparation to avoid adverse cardiac effects.

The best known form of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for women involves replenishment of declining lev-els of estrogen and progesterone. A study done at Harvard Medical School reported that postmenopausal women who were prescribed conventional synthetic HRT (conjugated estrogens and medroxypro-gesterone acetate) often discontinue this therapy within one year, most frequently due to side effects such as bloating and breast swelling/tenderness. The goal of hormone replacement therapy should be to optimize function and minimize age-related health risks, without harmful or annoying side effects. The ideal process for achieving hormonal balance begins with an assessment of hormone levels. This can be done using non-invasive sa-liva or blood spot testing. Based on test results and a complete evaluation of signs and symptoms, if a hormone deficiency is diagnosed, experienced practitioners can prescribe customized hormones in the most appropriate dose and dosage form for each woman.

It is essential that a woman works with a health care provider that understands her physical problems, knows how to identify and treat adrenal dysfunction, and can customize a treatment plan to address her particular needs.

compassionate and loving toward ourselves. Jin Shin Jyutsu® Physio-Philosophy is an an-cient, profound healing art that requires many years of study to understand fully. However, it is so simple to use, you don’t have to wait to enjoy its benefits. All you need is your own two hands!

Imagine you are on a crowded plane or in a tense business meeting, or stuck in heavy traffic. You feel anxious, irritable, low energy, unclear, a stomach ache or a headache coming on. By holding certain fingers and touching your elbow or knee with your fingertips and thereby applying Self-help Jin Shin Jyutsu®, you experience your physical discomforts and emotions clear, as well as your energy level return. Best of all, you can do Jin Shin Jyutsu® anywhere: couch, car, bed, at the movies- even while jogging. No special equipment, clothing, environment or conditions are needed.

Jin Shin Jyutsu® treatments can be experi-enced by applying the art to yourself or through a session with a trained Jin Shin Jyutsu® practitioner. Jin Shin Jyutsu® is a way of accessing the body’s own capacity to heal itself by harmonizing and balancing itself.

In the 1950s, Jin Shin Jyutsu® was brought to the United States from Japan by Mary Burmeister, after she had finished years of study with Master Jiro Murai. By meditating and utiliz-ing simple finger holds, Murai had experienced the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu® and cured himself of a life threatening illness. It is in this respect, that Self-help Jin Shin Jyutsu® is seen as the birth and core of Jin Shin Jyutsu®.

Traditional Japanese and Chinese medicine is based on an invisible inner circulatory system made up of pathways called meridians that carry life force or Chi to every part of the body. When these pathways become blocked or disrupted, the circula-tion of life energy is compromised and health problems, attitude

projects and/or pain occurs. For example, your fingers may seem distant and periph-eral to a symptom in your chest, but they are

not. Many energy pathways run through your fingers. Self-help Jin Shin Jyutsu® utilizes your fingers and hands like jumper cables, recharg-ing what they touch. By harmonizing the fingers, we can begin to harmonize the entire circulation of life energy in our bodies.

Jin Shin Jyutsu® Self-help is useful for oc-casional, chronic and acute conditions. The

more often the art is applied, the faster the body responds and heals itself. Daily self-help

creates optimum results. Many stories of miracu-lous healings abound in Jin Shin Jyutsu®, but it is

self-help stories in particular that point to our innate capacity to heal and love ourselves.

Jin Shin Jyutsu® Self-help engages you in self study. By developing awareness of the life force within you and how you can harmonize it by holding your fingers, toes or by utilizing simple energy flow patterns, you can easily become more responsible for maintaining your own balance, health, and happiness.

Jin Shin Jyutsu® Self-help seminars are taught throughout the world. Currently, there is

a research study on Jin Shin Jyutsu® and the heart in Morristown New Jersey Hospital. Nurses receive CEU’s for Self-help seminar attendance. The Jin Shin Jyutsu®, Inc. web site at www.jsjinc.net will inform you about any upcoming seminars throughout the world.

The kitchen represents wealth in the Chinese culture. When in the kitchen, Feng Shui experts pay most atten-tion to the placement of the stove. The logic follows a positive cycle: food feeds a person’s health therefore

the better the food, the more capable the person and the larger his/her potential income.

The chef should be aware of anyone entering the kitchen, or else residents’ health, wealth, and personal relations may suffer. If a cook is surprised, then a nervous chain reaction will be set off. For example, if a husband’s hug startles his wife while she is chopping carrots or cooking over a hot stove, she may get upset and this will not only affect their relationship that evening, but will trickle down to the office the next day.

The cook should work in a spacious, brightly lit, and well ventilated area. A stove that is cramped in the corner will inhibit the chef’s Ch’i flow, lowering the quality of food, and harming the health, wealth, careers, and relationships of fam-ily members.

Symbolically, the stove also figures prominently in a home’s finances. It should be clean and work smoothly so that money (ts’ ai) can easily enter the home. All burners should be clean or business will be plagued with obstructions. The family’s prosperity can be influenced by the number of burners; the more burners, the more money earned. If some burners are not regularly used, the family will not prosper.

* If the stove is against the wall: mirrors or reflective alumi-num on the walls behind the stove works great for staying aware of your surroundings while in the kitchen. A mirror on the side of the stove will allow for a more peaceful atmosphere and smoother cooking movements. A wind chime or crystal, hung in line with the stove and the door is also a great cure.

Clinical Clues That You Can Use

In the $10 language of medicine, water retention is called edema. Edema refers to an accumulation of water in the legs that “pits” when pressed on. You can recognize edema by using your finger to push on the area around your ankles or

just above them for several seconds. If you remove your finger and notice a depression or “pit” where you just pressed, you have edema.

Another common way to diagnose edema is by noticing the same kind of pitting at the top of your socks toward the end of the day. Many people will notice that after being on their feet for several hours their legs will start to swell up. This is the classical way many people describe edema.

The conventional treatment for edema is diuretic or “water” pills. These are pills that force your kidneys to alter their func-

tion, and cause them to inappropriately pull water from your body. The ultimate result of the pills is that they cause the body to become dehydrated. Of course this will reduce the edema, but at the same time, it creates the problem of dehydration. And that leads to other problems.

Common symptoms of dehydration are dry mouth, dry eyes, muscle cramps, nausea, increased heart rate, confusion and weakness. Some of the other side effects of diuretic pills are low potassium levels, arrhythmias , pancreatitis, jaundice, renal failure, interstitial nephritis and low white cells levels.

Fortunately, most people don’t get any of these symptoms or side effects if they only use the diuretics occasionally, but that’s not the point. The point is that when edema is present, it is there for a reason. It’s okay to take diuretics while you’re a busy figuring out what is causing the edema, but it is more important to find and correct the cause.

When you first consult your doctor about edema, the main causes that he has been trained to discover are heart failure and kidney disease. Kidney disease can usually be ruled out if the edema is limited to the legs, because the edema caused by kidney disorders is typically present not only in the legs but also in the face, arms and hands. The doctor can usually determine if the cause is heart failure based upon examining the patient, and ordering appropriate tests like a chest x-ray and echo cardiogram.

The problem is that about 90% of the time, edema, even pitting edema, is not caused by either of these conditions, in which case many doctors just stop looking for the real cause, and simply offer the patient a diuretic for the symptom. So let’s look at the most common causes of edema that a doctor may miss, and what you can do about them.

Weight Gain – Frequently the development of edema is caused by excessive weight. The weight increases the gravita-tional pull on the fluid in the legs, and causes the legs to retain fluid. During sleep, since the body is in a horizontal position, the gravitational pull is gone, and the water will move back into the general circulation. In many cases this newly acquired water during sleep will mean that you will need to get up and go to the bathroom several times during the night.

It also means that when the morning comes around, all or nearly all of the edema has gone away. This is a classic way to recognize edema caused by excessive weight. Lose the weight

and the edema goes away. Another symptom of edema caused by weight is that it is worse when the weather is hot.

Low Thyroid Function – The medical word for low thyroid function is “hypothyroidism.” Hypothyroidism is extremely common. It is one of the few hormonal deficiencies that can occur even in young people. Estimates are that it is present in over 80 percent of all patients over the age of 50.

Many doctors will miss the diagnosis, however, because we were all mistakenly taught in medical school that the only way to diagnose hypothyroidism is when the thyroid blood tests are abnormal. This turns out to be completely untrue. There are many articles in the medical literature that explain how hypothyroidism can be present even when all of the thyroid blood tests are in the “normal range.” This is particularly true for the most common test used to diagnose hypothyroidism, the TSH test.

The only 100 percent reliable way to be sure that the body has normal thyroid func-tion is to measure basal metabolic rate (BMR). This test is easy to do, is well validated in the scientific literature, and often indicates hypothyroidism when all of the blood tests are normal. The best way to determine BMR is with Bio-Energy Testing. This is a testing procedure that measures BMR and then com-pares the result to what would be optimal for the weight, height, and sex of the person taking the test. You can learn more about Bio-Energy testing and find a clinic near you that offers it by going to www.bioenergytesting.com.

The way that many alternative doctors diagnose edema caused by hypothyroidism that do not have access to Bio-Energy Testing is by a physical examination, a symptom check, and a trial of thyroid hormone supplementation. In other words, if the patient looks like someone with hypothyroidism, and has some of the symptoms commonly seen in hypothyroidism (such as edema), they give them a trial of thyroid hormone. If the symptoms and the edema go away, then the diagnosis of hypothyroidism can be made. If there is no improvement, then it’s back to the drawing board.

Protein Deficiency – Another common cause of edema is a diet deficient in protein. If edema exists in a patient who is a vegan or a vegetarian, this is always a possible cause. Other indicators are if there are symptoms of poor digestion.

A good way to determine protein deficiency is to get a blood test called a serum albumin. In healthy patients the serum albumin is over 4 grams/dl. If the value is lower than this, the odds are pretty good that either the patient is not eating enough protein, or that they have a digestive disorder that interferes with the proper digestion and assimilation of protein. Correct the disorder and the edema will go away.

Sodium – Of course one of the most common causes of edema is excessive use of either salt or foods high in sodium. This is very individual. Some peoples’ bodies do very well with handling sodium, and others’ do not. If you suspect this to be the cause, then simply go on a two gram sodium diet for three weeks, and take some additional magnesium supplementation as described below. The edema will go away if excessive sodium is the cause. Besides salt, sodium is found in a great many foods. To find out how to go on a two gram sodium restricted diet, go to http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/aha/2gSodiumDiet.pdf

Female Hormones – In women, a common cause of edema is estrogen excess. During hormonal replacement therapy, edema can occur either as a result of a dose of estrogen that is excessive, or an insufficient dose of progesterone. Keep in

mind that the drug Provera®, which is still used by some doctors as a substitute for pro-gesterone is a very poor substitute. It is known to cause cancer, strokes, heart disease, and osteoporosis, and is also a common cause of fluid retention.

The other cause of estrogen excess, one that is often seen in menstruating women, is a result of an insufficient amount of the hor-mone progesterone being produced by the body. In these cases, the woman will often notice the edema in the two weeks before

she has her menstrual period. The treatment for this cause of edema is to use progesterone cream during the two weeks be-fore menses is due. The problem will typically disappear after one to two months of therapy.

Three other factors that might need attention in women with edema are B6 deficiency, magnesium deficiency, and hypo-thyroidism. All three of these conditions result in an estrogen excess. So if you notice that your edema is definitely worse in the days leading up to your period, then try taking 100mg of vitamin B6 along with 300mg of magnesium glycinate for few cycles and see if this doesn’t help to solve the problem. These nutrients work really great with progesterone cream.

Whatever the cause of your water retention is, don’t just accept it as natural, and don’t just blindly rely on water pills. Find and treat the cause, and you will be much better off.

What is cellulite anyway? The fatty tissue of the body acts as a “toxic waste disposal site,” where substances are

dumped that the body cannot metabo-lize. The lymphatic system is responsible for eliminating this waste through sweat, urine, etc. The cellulite layer is a physi-ological layer that is supposed to be there. The extent to which it is visible is affected by several variables such as genetics, dietary and exercise habits, as well as hormones.

Lypossage is an all natural body con-touring treatment that will help reshape your figure without invasive surgery. The treatment is a specific blend of massage modalities that derive from physical therapy, including lymphatic drainage and deep tissue release. Charles W. Wiltsie III, a nationally recognized mas-sage therapy educator and practitioner, created Lypossage. Mr. Wiltsie con-ducted a year-long study of 100 female subjects to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. Published in 1999, notable results included an average inch loss of one to one and a half inches per thigh, and a cumulative average loss of almost seven inches.

Lypossage cleanses the body of stagnant, stalled lymphatic fluid. The deeper Lypossage strokes can break up adhesions under the skin that can con-tribute to the appearance of cellulite. It

also can tone the muscles, lifting and firming sagging tissue.

There are three zones that Lypos-sage focuses on. Zone 1 focuses on the lower body from the twelfth rib to the knee. Zone 2 focuses on the upper body from the twelfth rib to the neck, including the décolleté. Zone 3 focuses on the head, neck and face; acting as a natural facelift.

While there are some contraindica-tions for specific medical conditions, Lypossage can be safely performed on most healthy individuals who are no more than 70 pounds overweight. Lypossage is a safer option to surgical procedures. While there are no restric-tions or certifications needed to operate body contouring machines, Lypossage can only be performed by a trained massage therapist.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a treatment combination of breath-ing 95-100 percent pure oxygen while being in a pressurized

chamber. One of the many physics laws that govern gasses, Henry’s Law, states that the amount of gas that can dissolve in a liquid is proportional on the pressure. The combina-tion of pure oxygen and the pressure within the chamber can increase the amount of oxygen absorbed in the fluids of the body 10 times (while in a 1.5 atmosphere chamber). Proportionally more oxygen can be dis-solved with higher pressures, but for comfort and safety, 1.5 atmospheres is the standard for “mild” hyperbaric therapy.

The physiological benefits of increased oxygen, among other things, is that it significantly reduces inflammation, kills anaerobic bacteria, promotes healing, and detoxifies tissues. The most exciting effect of increased oxygen, however, is that it can get to areas of the body that red blood cells cannot get to because of their size.

With certain brain problems such as trauma (i.e., strokes or a concussions), mul-tiple sclerosis, or drug or alcohol-induced

brain injuries, some nerve cells have died, some are performing normally, and some are in between living and dying and are what has been termed “idling neurons”—sort of alive, but not doing anything func-tional. An infusion of oxygen will often “wake-up” these nerve cells. Depending on what percent of the injured brain tissue is “idling” and not dead, the success of this therapy can be phenomenal.

Brain changes with HBOT can be objectively identified by SPECT scans, specialized CT scans of the brain that identifies what areas of the brain are functioning well and what areas are func-tioning slowly or not at all. Pre and post therapy scans will often show objective improvement.

Named for the prickly scales in its large conical seed head, the Native American medicinal plant, Echi-nacea, resembles the spines of an angry hedgehog (echinos, Greek for hedgehog).

Echinacea can be recognized by its tall stems, bearing a single pink or purple flower and a central cone that is usually purplish-brown in color. The large cone is the seed head with sharp spines. Of nine echinacea species, only three are used for medicinal purposes: Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea pallida, Echinacea purpurea, often in combination.

Results of archeological digs indicate that Native Americans may have used echinacea for more than 400 years to treat infections and wounds and as a general cure-all. The herb, his-

torically, has been used to treat scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning and diphtheria.

Today, people use echinacea to shorten the common cold and flu and reduce corresponding symptoms. It is also recom-mended to help boost the immune system and help the body fight infections. More specifically, echinacea contains active substances that enhance the activity of the immune system, re-lieve pain, reduce inflammation, and have hormonal, antiviral, and antioxidant effects.

Echinacea preventing or treating the common cold remains under debate. Several trials have shown that people who take echinacea as soon as they feel sick reduce the severity of their cold and have fewer symptoms than those who do not take the herb.

Echinacea as a supplement contains several chemicals that play a role in its therapeutic effects; including polysaccharides, glycoproteins, alkamides, volatile oils and flavonoids.

The roots of the plant have high concentrations of volatile oils (odorous compounds) while the above-ground parts of the plant tend to contain more polysaccharides (substances known to trigger the activity of the immune system). The combination of these active substances is responsible for echinacea’s beneficial effects, though research suggests that the above ground portion of echinacea purpurea is the most effective.

Echinacea, including one, two, or all three of the medicinal species, is available in extracts, tinctures, tablets, capsules and ointments. As colder weather is upon us, any boost to the im-mune system could mean the difference between misery and a festive winter season.

The American Herbal Products Asso-ciation gives Echinacea a class 1 safety rating, meaning that it is safe when used appropriately and with the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Those suffering from tuberculosis, leukemia, diabetes, connective tissue disorders, multiple sclerosis, HIV or AIDS, any autoimmune diseases or liver disorders should not take Echinacea. There is some concern that Echinacea may reduce the effectiveness of medica-tions that suppress the immune system. For this reason, people receiving organ transplants who must take immunosup-pressant medications should avoid this herb. Consulting a physician concern-ing specific side effects and interactions with other supplements or medications is recommended.

Are you one of those frustrated “dieters” who has tried a variety of weight loss programs only to gain the weight back? Stop blaming yourself for lack of will power or labeling yourself a failure. Diets simply don’t work

long term. You can stop the yo-yo dieting cycle that comes from an imbalanced metabolism programmed to store fat. There are several keys to reprogramming your metabolic switch to burn fat. Once you “flip the metabolic switch,” you will naturally become healthy, lean and fit. There are several key factors that will help reprogram your metabolic switch.

1. Balance your appetite control system by eating foods low on the glycemic index.

2. Increase lean muscle mass with strength and interval training.

3. Reduce and manage stress to maintain hormonal bal-ance.

4. Adopt a healthier long term plan for life.

The appetite control system is driven by a number of hor-monal factors, such as insulin, cortisol and leptin. Eating highly processed foods, like white potatoes, high sugar cereals, pas-tries, and sweet beverages, elevate blood sugar, which is first stored as glycogen while the excess is stored as fat. Over time, insulin resistance sets up a fat storing metabolism. Food crav-ings, increased appetite, and lack of satiety follow. Those who eat the typical American “goo & glue” diet, can develop leptin resistance as well. Leptin stimulates a feeling of fullness. Those who are Leptin resistant feel hungry all the time. Daily stress elevates cortisol levels, which further stimulates fat storage. The appetite control system has run amuck.

How does one repair this system? Start by eating foods with a low glycemic load that are rich in phytonutrients and high in fiber. This will keep blood sugar levels stable and Insulin levels low, which encourages a fat burning metabolism. The key is to eat foods that break down slowly.

Increasing fiber intake is key to making the metabolic switch from fat storer to a fat burner. It slows down the rate of absorption. Since more digestion is required to break down the food, fiber increases thermogenesis (the amount of calo-ries required to metabolize food.) You feel full and satisfied longer and tend to eat less throughout the day. Strive for 30 grams of fiber per day.

Eat natural, unprocessed foods with a variety of colors. Eliminate fake, processed, chemically altered food. Eat foods as close as possible to the way they are found in nature. Whole fruit, whole vegetables, wild fish, whole grains, grass-fed beef, nuts, seeds, legumes. Also con-sume healthy fats (omega-3’s) that help communicate with “DNA to turn on special genes that help increase

fat burning, improve blood sugar control, correct Insulin resistance and reduce inflammation.”

Dr. David Ludwig found that low fat diets slow your metabolism more than low-glycemic eating. At the end of the study, the low fat group had slower metabolism, increased appetite, and resistance to further weight loss. They were also more inflamed, and had higher triglycerides, insulin, blood sugar and blood pressure. Natural foods high in fiber keeps the metabolism revved up and facilities long term body fat loss. Bottom line, eating a low fat diet slows metabolism while low glycemic eating increases metabolism.

Never skip breakfast. Those who start the day with a high fiber, high pro-tein breakfast, consume fewer calories throughout the day, have fewer cravings and feel full longer. Studies show that those who eat breakfast are more suc-cessful losing weight and keeping it off. Also eating small healthy meals every few hours keeps your metabolism burning ef-ficiently, like a well-tuned furnace.

Another key to reprogramming your metabolic switch is regular exercise. “Move it to lose it. Muscle dictates me-tabolism.” Strive to increase your lean muscle mass with regular strength train-ing. Muscle is much more “metabolically active and burns seventy times as many calories as fat cells.” In addition, studies have shown that interval training is a more effective way to burn body fat than tra-ditional endurance training. Researchers from Laval University found that groups who interval trained at half the duration of endurance trained groups, lost nine times more body fat. Interval training increased resting metabolism, allowing this group to burn many more calories at rest than did the endurance group.

Regular exercise is also helpful in managing the effects of daily stress. Stress management is important for reprogram-ming your metabolic switch. Excessive, uncontrolled stress elevates the stress hormone cortisol. This hormone is pre-dominantly stored in abdominal fat. It is an inflammatory hormone that prepares

the body for fight or flight. But today, we seldom “fight or flight” so this hormone builds up in our fatty tissue. Elevated Cortisol inhibits fat metabolism. Regular exercise combined with deep breathing and stress reducing exercise like yoga or meditation help alleviate this problem.

Follow the above suggestions to re-program your metabolic switch. Adopt a lifestyle that includes controlling your appetite by balancing your hormones, eating regular meals with live, natural low glycemic foods, exercising regularly and calming stress factors in your life. Once you flip the metabolic switch from fat storer to fat burner, you will naturally

regulate the amount of food you con-sume; you’ll feel satisfied and energized and will not have to worry about calorie counting or dieting ever again.

Escape the Worst Source of the Seasonal Blues

and Improve Your Health All Year by Making

Better Choices

Even though we think of the end-of-the-year holidays as the worst time for being exposed to sugar, we get

plenty of opportunity to partake all year long.

And that’s a shame because there is abundant evidence that sugar intake is not only harmful to health, it’s downright deadly. Here’s what I mean:

Sugar Speeds Up the Aging Process

Rats who stop getting fed sugar live twice as long as those who con-tinue eating it.

Sugar Boosts Blood PressureThis means it contributes to a

greater likelihood of stroke or heart attack.

Sugar Smacks Down the Digestive System

Consuming excessive amounts of refined sugar aggravates Crohn’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). 80 percent of Crohn’s Disease patients adopting a sugar-free diet show improve-ment.

Eating Too Much Sugar Increases The Risk of Gallstones

Sugar directly irritates the stomach and impairs protein digestion. In turn, this prevents the body from healing as quickly because proteins are the building blocks of cellular repair.

Sugar Plugs Up the Urinary TractEating sugar increases the likelihood

of kidney stones.

Eating Sugar Squelches the Immune System

Sugar reduces the body’s production of antibodies, the body’s front-line sol-diers that identify and neutralize foreign invaders.

Excessive consumption of sugar in-terferes with the function of neutrophils, the most abundant type of white blood cells and a crucial part of a healthy im-mune system.

Sugar also interferes with the function of phagocytes (literally “big eaters”) that

Sugar’s Surprisingly Large Number of Deadly Effects

Written by Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

circulate through the body gobbling up toxic and dangerous materials.

Sugar Reduces the Body’s Abil-ity to Fight Off Cancer

Sugar increases the risk of mam-mary cancer by defeating the ability of the body to fight abnormally mul-tiplying cells.

Sugar increases the risk of colon cancer - just one teaspoon of addi-tional sugar per day increases colon cancer risk by 40 percent and an additional three teaspoons or more increases the risk of colon cancer by 100 percent.

Eating Sugar Interferes with Crucial Metabolic Processes

Increased blood sugar levels raise the insulin production, contributing to insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.

Sugar can initiate cross-linking of proteins and sugars, forming a sticky, caramel-like substance in the tissues (AGEs) that block healthy metabolism and lead to pain and other health

problems.

Sugar ramps up production of free radicals within the body, which have mul-tiple negative effects on health, including increasing inflammation, aggravating heart disease and multiplying the likeli-hood of strokes.

Excessive consumption of sugar can cause insulin resistance, a hallmark of metabolic syndrome and a precursor to diabetes.

Excessive consumption of sugar exacer-bates obesity by increasing the formation of body fat. In a diet too low in fat, it substi-tutes for dietary fats in energy production. Ironically, this leads to the accumulation

Page 53: February 2009 HB Mag

February 2009 53 For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

of fat around the internal organs, which inter-feres with their natural functioning.

Sugar increases circulating triglycerides in the blood. Recent research implicates elevated triglycerides as aggravating a wide variety of chronic and ultimately deadly diseases such as heart disease, strokes, dia-betes, and pancreatitis.

Sugar Ruins Oral HealthSugar causes tooth decay by converting

the bad bacteria that naturally exist on the teeth into cavity causing lactic acid. This creates plaque, which is a fundamental part of creating tooth decay.

Eating Sugar Ages SkinExcessive sugar intake accelerates the

development of wrinkles because of the cross-linking of sugar and protein. The result has the apt acronym, AGE.

Other Effects of Sugar IntakeSugar increases the production of choles-

terol in the body. Since 80% of the choles-terol we have is made inside the body, this is a major contributing factor.

Sugar increases the production of cor-tisol, aka the ‘stress hormone.’ Chronically elevated cortisol has a long list of negative effects including weight gain, elevated blood pressure, sleeplessness, impaired learning and memory, and lowered immunity.

Wow, that’s quite a list!

Given what you now know about the effects of sugar in your body, I hope you’ll be more careful throughout the upcoming year. You’ll be trading 5 minutes of “happy mouth” for a lifetime of happier, healthier living.

• Ultra-pure, highly concentrated omega-3 fatty acids

• Convenient capsule form

• Maintains good joint health

• Supports healthy cholesterol levels blood pressure & brain development

• Twice the potency of many fish oil supplements

BiOmega™ provides essential nutrition in its purest form

What are Omega 3 fatty acids and why are they important additions to a healthy diet?

Research indicates that proper levels of omega-3 fatty acids aid in healthy heart func-tion, reduces inflammation, maintains bone health, decreases depression, is essential for eye development and critical for infant brain development and optimal nerve function

The typical Western diet is lacking in Omega 3 fatty acids and abundant in the omega 6 fatty acids. The recommended ratio is 2:1. Most Americans are consuming 20:1.How can I increase my intake of omega 3 fatty acids?

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in a variety of foods such as cold-water fish, flaxseed and flaxseed oil, walnut oil, soybean oil and free-range chicken eggs. Supplementation with fish oil capsules is also an excellent way to

add this essential fatty acid to your diet. When choosing a fish oil look for phar-

maceutical grade, filtered fish oil capsules that are labeled manufactured by GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). How much do I need?

The American Heart Association recom-mends 1 gram/day of omega 3 up to 3+ grams per day, depending on your health needs.

Adding fish to your diet 2 times/week, cold-pressed flaxseed oil and fish oil supple-ments will increase your levels of omega 3.

A lot of energy and resources are used to bring you bottled water. The quality of that water isn’t monitored or regulated much

more than what comes out of your tap at home. Cost-wise, 16 ounces of bottled water costs the equivalent of $7 a gallon. By getting a reusable water bottle you will

introduce fewer plastic bottles into the world, reduce the number of fuel-burning truck trips carrying bottled water, and keep the 80 percent that’s

not recycled from ever seeing the landfill. There are several options for reusable water bottles.

Plastic is a common choice, but some concern has been raised with studies of Bisphe-nol-A. BPA is a chemical that is used in the production of reusable plastic water bottles. It leaches at a higher rate from containers when heated or in

contact with acidic materials. Recent studies by Centers for

Disease Control found BPA in 93 percent of 2500 persons tested. BPA mim-ics estrogen and can cause breast and prostate cancer, thyroid disease, early puberty in females and decreased sperm counts in males. BPA is primarily found in hard plastics usually denoted with the number seven. Many companies pulled

their products and changed the type used to a BPA-free plastic.

A metal bottle avoids this issue and typically your choices are aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum is lightweight but the safety of it is still undetermined. Aluminum is found throughout the environment in a number of products and processes including food and water treatment. There has been some concern with a link between aluminum and Al-zheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Stainless steel is long-lasting, chemi-cally inert, sustainable, clean tasting and 100 percent recyclable. It is non-toxic. Stainless steel is a great alternative to protect mother earth and your health.

An ancient physio-philosophy that reduces stress and complements other modalities. Using gentle touch, Jin Shin Jyutsu releases accumulated tensions by balancing the body’s life force energy, resulting in deep relax-ation and peacefulness. Balance & harmony are necessary for good health.

STRESS REDUCTION

Are you suffering from indiges-tion, bloating, acid reflux and/or gas? Have you come to depend on over the counter

stomach acid reducers? The problem may not be a case of too much stomach acid, but too few digestive enzymes.

Enzymes control nearly every bio-chemical reaction in the body and are essential for a healthy life. Half of all adults do not produce enough enzymes. It is estimated that every 10 years, as we age, our bodies can loose up to 13 per-cent of our ability to create enzymes.

The digestive tract produces enzymes that help the body to break down the food we eat and absorb the nutrients from that food. When digestive enzymes are deplet-ed, too much food is allowed to remain in the stomach too long, causing gas, heartburn, indigestion and other symp-toms. Since most of us do not consume enough raw foods (which contain these essential enzymes), supplementing the diet with digestive enzymes increases the ability of the digestive tract to process and absorb more nutrients. Large amounts of energy, that otherwise would have been expended on digestion, is then available to the body for other processes, including healing and elimination of wastes.

Without proper breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients, toxins ac-cumulate in the bowel from undigested food and compromise the colon’s ability to effectively eliminate waste, which result in autointoxication, producing a long list of seemingly unrelated con-ditions. A thorough cleansing of the bowel with colon hydrotherapy and the introduction of digestive enzymes can relieve many symptoms associated with a sluggish digestive tract such as; constipation, gas, bloat, indigestion, acid reflux, food allergies, uncontrolled weight and pre-mature aging.

There has never been a better time to improve digestion, increase energy and rid yourself of the need for stomach acid reducers. The best diet is a healthy digestive tract!

H ASTROLOGICAL ALCHEMY ••• The Astrology of Self-Transformationsm

THE SUN IN Monthly Health Outlook:

AQUARIUSWritten By Robert Ayres

The Sun enters Aquarius on January 19th. This creates an energetic shift from heavy, earthy Capricorn to light, airy Aquarius. Capricorn rules our karma and our responsi-bilities while Aquarius stimulates our sense of freedom

and liberation. Being an air sign, Aquarius expresses primarily through the mind, that part of our being that evolutionarily has achieved the greatest degree of freedom. Our ability to think and explore the universe through the realm of ideas is unbounded. To the degree that we choose to limit our thinking and by continually accepting our thoughts or self talk that limits our personal growth.

The word man is derived from the Sanskrit manas, which means to think. The mystery of the human being is contained within the enigma of human thinking. An ancient maxim states that as a person thinks, so they are. Change your thinking and you change your life. Aquarius is dedicated to the liberation of our thinking from the mundane and conventional. Our world could use a fresh, enlightened perspective on what life is all about.

Aquarius rules the archetype of the inventor. The individual driven by creative genius lives a life of exploration, experimen-

tation, and thinking outside the box. There is a restlessness to this soul who senses that there is more to life than what tradition tells us. The Aquarius-influenced person is motivated to challenge the accepted truths and blaze new trails in mind and thought. As a result, new dis-coveries are made which add to the storehouse of human knowledge. In the field of medicine and health, Aquarius generally rules alternative healing techniques and methodologies.

Aquarius also rules electricity. One of The Waterbearer’s symbols is the lightning bolt. The

lightning bolt is a symbol of the transformation of ignorance into enlightenment. Concentrated

celestial light descending from the heavens to earth trans-forms darkness into light. One of the titles given to Uranus, one of the planetary rulers of Aquarius, is The Awakener. Its energy can wake us up from the enchantment of a materialistic world view, to which many have succumbed.

Aquarius provides us with the opportunity to expand our consciousness and embrace the celestial, spiritual reality without denying the important role of the material world. A true perspective on life must include the spiritual realities that form the foundation of the mundane world. The state of consciousness ruled by Aquarius is cosmic consciousness or self-realization. It is unbounded awareness of the wholeness of life. From this enlightened perspective, the mind can experience and explore the entire creation. This is a human birthright that is structured into our very being. It just requires us to do the work to unfold this hidden potential. The result is true freedom and liberation. This Aquarian state of consciousness allows us to transcend the limitations of the physical world and live on an unbounded level. We are all, collectively and individually, evolving towards this. When we truly integrate this vision of the paradigm of human life into our awareness, it has a profound quickening effect on our growth and our quality of life. It is a very uplifting and inspiriting energy.

Page 59: February 2009 HB Mag

Physiologically, Aquarius rules the pituitary gland, which is the master gland controlling the endocrine sys-tem. These organs secrete hormones into the bloodstream and powerfully influence our behavior. The endocrine glands are the physical counterparts to the chakras of the subtle bodies. The chakras, or consciousness centers, are the focused expression of higher forces and powers of consciousness. Within these centers is the latent potential of higher consciousness. We must each cleanse, purify, and heal our chakras and endocrine glands in order to con-sciously work with these higher powers of awareness.

The pituitary gland relates to the “third eye” or ajna chakra. It is known as the two-petaled lotus. Its dual nature relates to the balancing and harmoniz-ing of all opposites. These include the polarities of spirit and matter as well as the two hemispheres of the brain. The third eye is the center of clairvoyance. When the ajna chakra is opened, we are then able to truly see and experi-ence reality. This results in fundamental and positive changes in our lives. It is as if we have been living a dream from which we are awakening. With this ex-pansion of consciousness we achieve a state of freedom and transcendence from our old earthbound life.

Take advantage of the Sun’s pas-sage through Aquarius to raise your consciousness and uplift your life. Go for it!

INSOMNIA: A Diabetic’s Obstacle

Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

Those who benefit from hypnosis know that truly astonishing re-sults can be obtained

through this process. Accord-ing to James Stewart, MD, “despite variations in hypnotic

techniques, patients treated with hypnosis experienced substantial benefits for many very different medical conditions.”

The purpose of medically supported hypnosis for diabetes is to bring about subconscious changes so that you are improving your health and experiencing better diabetes management. Evidence shows that hypnotic relaxation can have a significant influence on a person’s body.

“Emotions are intimately involved in the initiation or progression of cancer, HIV, cardiovascular disease and auto-immune disorders,” said Yoram Barak in Autoimmunity Review. “An increase in secretory immunoglobulin A and a de-crease in salivary cortisol (the stress hor-mone) were induced by deep relaxation accompanied by pleasant emotions.” Deep relaxation accompanied by pleas-ant emotions is a perfect description of the feelings generated during hypnosis.

Dr. Richard Surwit of Duke Uni-versity has proven that deep relaxation over time helps people with diabetes to lower their blood sugar levels. Therefore it seems important for a diabetic to learn and practice the deeply relaxing practice of self-hypnosis on a daily basis. It’s easy to learn.

Regarding many ailments, not only diabetes, sometimes a solution to one problem creates another. For example, if a diabetic patient is depressed, then anti-depressants may cause insomnia. This is sometimes called a “hidden condi-tion” and frustrates health care providers as well as patients. To be more specific, poor sleep robs people of their health in general. But for diabetics, it can actually worsen their condition.

At the 2005 annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association, a study was presented warning that a chronic lack of sleep may cause diabetics to become less sensitive to insulin over time. In fact, chronic sleep deprivation – six and a half hours (or less) of sleep a night – has

the same effect on insulin resistance as aging.

Insulin is a storage hormone pro-duced by the body to lower blood sugar, but over time the imbalances may stress the system and the cells may become less responsive. This condition is known as insulin resistance. Learning self-hypnosis to assist in getting a good night’s sleep is an excellent medication-free method, a reasonable, first effort treatment for insu-lin resistance.

Working together with a health care team, a hypnotist who is also a stress management consultant and motivational coach can help a diabetic significantly reduce stress levels and thus become much more efficient in the management of their condition. Just the ability to sleep better can make an enormous dif-ference in one’s quality of life. Be aware that whether you are in robust health or dealing with a challenging condition, you must remember to speak well to your-self because your deep mind is always listening.

“I purchased a web back support fifteen years ago & loved it! But I left it at one of my temp jobs. I’ve tried several back support cushions since then & none of them have worked. The reason I like the web back support is that is doesn’t sink or reshape itself, it fits in any chair & it’s very portable. I was so happy to see this ad, I can’t believe I found you! I bought two, one for home & one for my job.” -Pat Olsen • Reno, NV
