JohnA.LoganCollegewascreatedbypublicmandateinSeptember,1967.ItbeganitsfirstacademicyearinSeptember, 1968, with 330 students enrolled. Administratively, it operated from a store-front facility in Herrin, Illinois, using various rented community facilities as classrooms.

In 1969, the College acquired and occupied its permanent campus, a 161-acre tract fronting Highway 13 just westofCarterville,Illinois.Abondreferendumwaspassedthesameyeartohelpfinancetheconstructionofthefirstphase of a permanent building, which was subsequently constructed and occupied in 1973.

In 1981, the College passed a $6 million bond referendum to provide 60,000 square feet of new and renovated facilities, including 3 new buildings, to replace 8 interim buildings on the campus. In 1991, the College dedicated an additional 100,000 square feet of new and remodeled facilities as part of an $8.5 million project funded principally by the Illinois Capital Development Board. In 1995, the College passed a $16 million bond referendum to provide 108,000 new square feet in 6 buildings. This project was also funded principally by the Illinois Capital Development Board. The legislature approved an additional $8.4 million in construction monies in 1999; construction on a Community Health Education Complex and the Workforce Development and Construction Management Centers were completed in 2004.

NathanA.Iveywastheinstitution’sfirstpresident,servingfrom1968to1973,followedbyThomasDeem,1973-74.RobertE.Tarvinwaspresidentuntil1982,andHaroldR.O’Neilservedfrom1982to1989.Dr.RayHancockserved from 1989-2000. Dr. Robert L. Mees is the current president.

Dr. Robert L. Mees PRESIDENTDr. Robert L. Mees became the sixth president of John A. Logan College in June of 2000.

Dr.MeescametoJohnA.LoganCollegein1991asvice-presidentoftheCollege’sInstructionalDivisionafterservingassuperintendentofCartervilleUnitSchoolDistrictNo.5fortenyears.

During his tenure at John A. Logan College, Dr. Mees has been president of the Illinois CommunityCollegeChiefAcademicOfficersandassumedaleadershiproleintheexpansionofacademicprogramsandinthedevelopmentoftheschool’sverysuccessfulCenterforBusinessandIndustry.TheCollegewasrankedfifthinthenationbyRollingStonemagazinein1998basedon research conducted by UCLA personnel at the Center for the Study of Community Colleges.

Dr. Mees is a strong advocate of intercollegiate athletics, and stresses a well-balanced program with emphasis on a concern for the student-athlete. Mees also believes that a quality athletic program that emphasizes academics, responsibility, dedication, and teamwork greatly enhances the growth of the student-athlete and promotes the image of the College locally, statewide, and nationwide.

Dr. Tim Daugherty VICE-PRESIDENTFORADMINISTRATIVESERVICES

Dr. Tim Daugherty, Vice-President for Administration, is the senior administrator for intercollegiate athleticsatJohnA.LoganCollege.Heholdsbothhisbachelor’sandmaster’sdegreesfromEasternIllinois University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University. He joined the College in June 2008 after spending the past 24 years at Southeastern Illinois College where he was also served as the senior administrator for intercollegiate athletics.

Inadditiontoathletics,heoverseestheCollege’sofficesofAdmissions,Assessment,FinancialAid, Placement, Transfer, Student Success Center, Community Relations, Continuing Education, and the Center for Business and Industry. A native of Herrin, the 1974 graduate of Herrin High School is a member of the Tiger Hall of Fame in both basketball and football.

“John A. Logan College has always been an example of excellence in the classroom and on theplayingfield,”Daughertysaid.“Myprimaryconcernisthatourstudentathletesandallstudentshave opportunities to succeed and be competitive in both academics and athletics.”

Jerry Halstead ATHLETIC DIRECToR InMay2001,long-timeVolunteerbaseballcoachJerryHalsteadbecamethefirstnewathletic

director at John A. Logan College in 21 years, replacing John Sala, who retired after serving in that capacity since 1980.

A native of Carterville, Halstead attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and graduated in1982withabachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducation.WhileattendingSIU,Halsteadpitchedforthe Saluki baseball team for three years, helping win Missouri Valley Conference championships andparticipatingintheNCAATournament.

In the fall of 1982, he began his career at Logan as the assistant baseball coach. He took over asheadbaseballcoachafteroneseasonandalsoservedastheassistantmen’sbasketballcoachfor three years.

Halstead has built the baseball program into one of the top programs in the country. The Volunteers annually rank among the elite in community college baseball. They won the Great Rivers Athletic Conference title in 2001, 2002, and 2004. They also won Region 24 championships in 2002, 2004, and2006.In2002theVolswentontofinishseventhattheNJCAAWorldSeries.

Duringthe1990s,Loganpostedfourstraightnationaltop-tenfinishesandearnedfourconferencetitles.FourteenformerVolunteersarecurrentlyplayingprofessionalbaseball.Halsteadhasproduced10NJCAAAll-Americansandroutinelyleadsthenation in players signing at four-year schools.

Whilehismainfocushasbeenonbaseballthroughoutmostofhiscareer,HalsteadbecameLogan’scoordinatorofathleticsin the fall of 1995. In that position, he dealt with all aspects of the Athletic Department and is now in charge of all seven college sports(baseball,softball,men’sbasketball,women’sbasketball,men’sgolf,women’sgolf,andvolleyball).

Marty Hawkins Head Women’s BasketBall CoaCH

MartyHawkinsishis17thseasonwiththewomen’sbasketballprogramatJohnA.LoganCollege,and13thasheadcoach.In2000-2001,heledtheLadyVolstoafinaleightfinishattheNJCAANationalTournament. Beforecoming toLogan,hecoachedoneseasonatMortonCommunityCollege and 14 at Loyola-Chicago.

AChicagonativeand1974DePaulgraduate,Hawkinsgothisstartincollegiateathleticsfirstasanequipment manager, and then as sports information director at DePaul. During his tenure at DePaul, he worked in publications, statistics, and radio-television production for the nationally ranked Blue Demonsmen’ssquad.In1978,hemovedtoLoyolaUniversitytoassumethesameresponsibilities.

In1979,hetookonthetaskofbuildingtheLoyolawomen’sbasketballprogramwhilecontinuinginsports information. He left the administrative post in 1981 to devote his energy to coaching basketball.

HawkinsthensteeredtheprograminitsmovefromAWIADivisionIItoNCAADivisionI.Duringhis tenure at Loyola, the Lady Ramblers won 227 games and three league championships. His

teamshadfour20-winseasonsandvictoriesoverDivisionIpowerslikeKansas,NotreDame,Wisconsin,andIllinois.Hewasnamedconference Coach of the Year three times and had a graduation rate of over 90 percent.

In12seasonsasheadcoachatLogan,hisrecordis227-146,andhehas457careerwinsasaheadcoach.Hehasabachelor’sdegree(withhonors)andamaster’sdegreefromDePaulineconomics.

Amanda Buldtman assistant Women’s BasketBall CoaCH

Amanda Buldtman begins her fourth year as the assistant coach for the John A. Logan College Lady Vols.

Buldtman was born and raised in Metropolis, Illinois, and graduated from Massac County High School in 1998. She attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where she played basketballforfouryears.DuringhertenurewiththeCougars,herteamqualifiedtwicefortheDivisionIINCAATournament.ShegraduatedfromSIUEin2002withabachelor’sdegreeinbiological sciences.

In 2006, she completed with honors a Master of Science degree in education with a specialization in sports studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. While working on thatdegree,shedidaninternshipwithLogan’swomen’sbasketballprogramwheresheservedas a volunteer assistant coach.

#1 Haley Hewitt5’2” sophomoreguardwindfall, iN High school: tri-Central

Haley played guard for the Lady Vols last year, averaging four points and a team-best 2.5 assists per game.

She came to Logan from Tri-Central High School in Sharpsville, Indiana, where she was a four-year starter and varsity letter winner in basketball. PlayingforCoachKathieLayden,Haleyaveraged13pointsand9.5assistsper game as a senior. She also led her team in steals, collecting nine per contest. A three-time all-conference performer and honorable mention all-state selection, she was named one of the Top 100 Basketball Players by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association as a junior and senior. She also participated in softball and cross country.

#3 Je’Mishia Cottrell5’6” Freshmanguard sun City, aZ High school: liberty

Je’MishiajoinstheLadyVolsafterasuccessfulcareeratLibertyHighSchool in Sun City, Arizona, where she was a four-year varsity basketball player.Sheaverageddoublefiguresinscoringherfreshmanandsophomoreseasons and was named team MVP both years. She also competed in track her freshman year.

#10 austyn ridings 5’9” FreshmanguardHerrin, ilHigh school: Herrin

Austyn comes to Logan from nearby Herrin where she played basketball forCoachMikeNewbold.Austynaveraged20points,sixassists,andfiverebounds per game her senior year, earning all-state honors and helping lead herteamtoaregionaltitleandthesectionalfinals.Athree-timeall-conferenceselection in basketball, she was twice named all-south and was the Southern Illinoisan Player of the Year as a senior. She also played softball and volleyball inhighschoolandwasamemberoftheNationalHonorSociety.

#12 shakera Bennett5’6” Freshmanguard/Forwardmiami, FlHigh school: miami Jackson

Shakera prepped at Miami Jackson High School in Florida, playing for CoachKennethBruce.Atwo-timeteamMVP,Shakeracontributed17points,nine rebounds, and six steals per contest as a senior. She was chosen her team’sDefensivePlayeroftheYearandwastwicedesignatedtheChairwomanof the Boards for rebounding. She was selected the Top Scholar Female in Basketball her senior year. She will play the guard and forward positions at Logan.

#13 Cheshi Poston6’2” sophomoreForwardChicago, ilHigh school: simeon

CheshireturnstoLoganastheteam’sleadingrebounderfromlastseason,pulling down more than seven per contest. She also provided 7.3 points per game.

She prepped at Simeon Career Academy in Chicago for Coach Shajaunna Jordan before joining the Lady Vols. A post player, Cheshi was selected her team’sMVPasasenior.ShealsocompetedonthetrackteaminhighschoolandfinishedsecondintheCityHighJumpCompetitionherjunioryear.

#14 ka’daizha BenJaMin5’9” FreshmanForwardHerrin, ilHigh school: Herrin

Ka’DaizhaplayedinjustthreegamesfortheLadyVolslastseasonbeforeshe was sidelined with an injury. She has rehabbed and hopes to return to the court this year.

BeforecomingtoLogan,Ka’Daizhawasanhonorstudentandastandoutathlete in three sports – basketball, volleyball, and track – at Herrin High School. Averaging 12.5 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior, she helped lead her team to a three-way tie for the ohio Division of the River to RiverConference title. Sheachievedmore than1,000points (1,297)and1,000rebounds(1,051)inherbasketballcareer,becomingtheschool’sall-timeleader in rebounds.

#20 sasha WarMington6’0” sophomoreForward/CenterKitchener, ontario High school: Kitchener

Sasha played in the post for Logan last year, contributing 4.1 points and four rebounds an outing.

ShejoinedtheLadyVolsfromKitchener,Ontario,Canada,whereshewas a four-sport athlete, competing in basketball, volleyball, rugby, and track. Shewaschosenherschool’sAthleteoftheYearasajuniorandhelpedleadthebasketballteamtotheconferencefinalsherjuniorandsenioryears.

#21 Brittany Wood5’5” Freshman guardgalatia, il High school: Pope County

Brittany comes to Logan after a solid basketball career at Pope County High SchoolwheresheplayedforCoachKellyKing.Shegarneredall-conferencehonors three times and as a senior, she contributed 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and four steals per game. She was also on the honor roll and earned the Biology Award and the Presidential Academic Award.

#22 Moriah kirkPatriCk5’8” Freshmanguardmt. vernon, ilHigh school: mt. vernon township

Moriah played basketball for Coach Jeff Lonnon at Mt. Vernon Township High School before joining the Lady Vols. As a senior, she averaged 11 points a game and was an honorable mention All-South Seven selection. An honor student, she also competed on the track, tennis, soccer, and golf teams and won the Presidential Education Award.

OliviajoinedtheLadyVols’basketballteamafterfinishinghercareerwiththe JALC volleyball squad where she played setter and libero for two seasons. Atwo-sportathleteinhighschool,sheplayedbasketballforCoachKenJones.olivia was a shooting guard, averaging 10 points per game as a senior, and was chosen all-conference and all-district. An excellent student, she was an Academic All-State selection four times and the 2009 St. Louis Post-Dispatch Student-Athlete of the Year.

#24 diaMond tiMMons5’0” FreshmanPoint guardColp, il High school: Herrin

Diamond was a four-time all-conference choice at Herrin High School, playingundertheguidanceofCoachMikeNewbold.Diamondaveraged12points,nineassists,andfourstealspertilthersenioryearandfinishedhercareer with 523 assists, setting a school record. She also competed in cross country and track. She will play point guard for the Lady Vols.

#30 kyra Watson5’8” sophomoresmall Forwardmontgomery, ilHigh school: west aurora

KyratransferredtoLoganfromCloudCountyCollege.Sheplayedhighschool basketball at West Aurora High School for Coach Connie Siljendahl. Kyraaveragedadouble-doublehersenioryearwithnearly20pointsand13.5 rebounds per game. She was named the Player of the Year by both the BeaconNewsandtheKaneChronicleandwasvotedherteam’sMVP.Shewasalsoafirstteamall-areaselectionandwontheAndersonApsetAward.

#45 sydney streator6’2” FreshmanForward/CenterPark Forest, il High school: rich east

Sydney took a medical red-shirt last year after suffering an injury in the preseason at Logan. She is healed up and ready to get back on the court.

Before joining the Lady Vols last season, Sydney played basketball for CoachJonnieBass’LadyRocketsatRichEastHighSchool.A6-foot-2postplayer, she averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 blocks, 5.2 steals, and four assists per contest her senior year while shooting 72 percent from the free throw line. She also played softball in high school.

GREAT RIVERS ATHLETIC COnFEREnCE In August 1982, competition began in a newly organized league of community colleges in Illinois. Charter members of the leagueincludedthefollowing:JohnA.LoganCollege,KaskaskiaCollege,SoutheasternIllinoisCollege,RendLakeCollegeandWabash Valley College. All the institutions were located near the two great rivers in Illinois, the Mississippi and ohio Rivers—thus the name Great Rivers Athletic Conference was adopted. In 1985, current members olney Central College and Southwestern Illinois College joined the GRAC. In 1988, Lincoln Trail became a GRAC member. Lake Land College joined the conference in 2005.
