Sangria SeductionBy Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

This Spanish wine punch is a must for summer.

Most of us experienced a long cold winterand are looking forward to warm weatherfun. For me, that means a balmyLowcountry cook-out with a refreshingpitcher of sangria.

Sangria, a popular wine punch enjoyed forcenturies, originated in Spain. There is noone “authentic” recipe, which is part of thebeauty of sangria. It’s a drink that showcasesthe local fresh ingredients of the region andseason.

Best of all, sangria is fun and easy to make. There are no exact measurements. How youmake it depends on your taste and availableingredients.

The basic recipe calls for wine, fruit and asweetener. Q uite often, spirits such as triplesec or brandy are added. Ice andcarbonation are optional, but I prefer to addthem to the glass upon serving. Sangria isoften served with a wooden spoon, whichcan be used to retrieve the fruit from thebottom of a punchbowl or pitcher.

Red wine usually serves as the base forsangria, although white wine works just aswell. Adding fruit is a critical step, whichgives sangria its signature summer taste.Personally, I think citrus is a must: limes, lemons or oranges. After that, almost

anything goes. Melons, berries, apples, peaches, apricots or even tropical fruits canbe sliced and added.

Sweetening your sangria depends on yourtaste and base wine. If you start with a drywine, but are looking for more sweetness, add sugar, honey or simple syrup. Keep inmind that if you decide to add spirits such asbrandy or triple sec, they are sweet as well. Therefore, I recommend adding your spiritsfirst and then adjusting the sweetnessaccordingly.

Sangria pairs perfectly with grilled orbarbecued fare because it complementsalmost any type of BBQ sauce, marinade orspice rub. Of course, adding a beach, marshor golf view can only enhance your overallexperience.

At Island Winery, we call our sangriaSouthern Passion. We start out with a full-bodied red wine, and blend in peach wineand orange wine made from 100% fruit.

A chilled bottle of our Southern Passion isdelicious on its own. It also acts as a greatbase wine for your own signature sangriarecipe, since it already contains red wine, natural fruit and sweetness. All you need todo is add local ingredients and yourimagination!

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at IslandWinery on Cardinal Road. Store and tast-ing hours are Monday through Saturdayfrom 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flightsand Cheese are available from 12:30 p.m.to 2:30 p.m. A Wine & Cheese Happy Houris offered Monday-Friday starting at 4 p.m.(843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman andDavis Love III are just a few of the championswho have worn the prestigious plaid jacket sym-bolizing the RBC Heritage.

That tradition continues April 14-20, when the46th RBC Heritage returns to Hilton Head Island, uniting some of the world’s top golfers for a$5.8 million purse and the chance to don thedistinctive tartan plaid blazer. The winner willwalk away with more than $1 million and thecoveted champion status at South Carolina’sonly PGA TOUR event.

The 2014 RBC Heritage will kick off with theannual cannon firing on the Harbour Town GolfLinks at Sea Pines, a legendary course originallydesigned by Pete Dye in consultation with JackNicklaus in 1969. Jason Bohn, Chris Kirk,Chesson Hadley, defending champion GraemeMcDowell and other notables have all committedto the 46th annual event.

Originally the vision of late Sea Pines developerCharles Fraser, the inaugural Heritage Classicgolf tournament teed off in 1969 as a way toestablish Hilton Head Island as a household name.In its first year, Arnold Palmer clinched the title and$20,000 of the competition' s $100,000 purse, and Hilton Head Island was well on its way tobecoming a world-class resort destination. Overthe past 40+ years, the tournament has grownfrom an innovative marketing strategy to one ofthe most beloved, most respected and most char-itable stops on the PGA TOUR.

Since 1987, more than $26 million has beendonated to charitable organizations to help peoplein need in South Carolina and Georgia. This year,

more than 100,000 fans are expected to attendthe RBC Heritage, with more than 60 millionhouseholds around the globe tuning in on TheGolf Channel, CBS Sports, Fox Sports Affiliatesand X M Satellite Radio. The RBC Heritage is tra-ditionally held the week following the MastersGolf Tournament and provides a warm, relaxedenvironment for players and their families to enjoythe best of Hilton Head Island.

Daily tickets and weeklong badges for thisyear’s tournament are currently on sale atrbcheritage.com or by calling the tournamentoffice at (843) 671-2448.

DID YOU KNOW?Davis Love III is the tournament’s only five-timewinner. Hale Irwin has won three times, whileJohnny Miller, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, FuzzyZ oeller, Payne Stewart, Stewart Cink and BooWeekley have won two Heritage events.

Davis Love III holds the longest current streak ofconsecutive appearances at the RBC Heritage. The 2011 tournament marked his 26th start.

The oldest winner was Hale Irwin in 1994 atage 48. The youngest winner was Davis Love IIIin 1987 at age 23.

The lowest score recorded by a Heritage winnerwas 264 by Brian Gay in 2009.

The RBC Heritage purse is eight times greaterthan it was in 1988 and this year’s purse isgreater than the combined payouts for thetournament’s first 19 years.

Horoscope April 2014

ARIES A misunderstanding betweenyou and a family member could turn

into a full-blown fight if you’re not careful.Explain yourself and make your intentionsclear. If you’ve been feeling frustrated lately, you may want to take a closer look at yourdiet.

TAURUS Reaching for the unreach-able will only lead to disappointment.

Sure, set your sights high, but keep in mindthat there are some things in life you just can’thave! A change in the workplace may be ahard adjustment at first. But creative thinkingwill turn things to your favor.

GEMINI With all the changesyou’ve been going through lately,

you’ll be happy to find this to be a slow-pacedmonth. A Taurus coworker may be the sourceof aggravation – especially if you’re in a man-agement position. News of an engagementadds a bright note to the month.

CANCER You may have to doeverything short of standing on your

head if you want to cheer up a down-and-outfriend. Make the effort. It will go a very longway. A tough decision midmonth will take upmuch of your thoughts. Trust your instinctsrather than logic to help you choose.

LEO Opportunity will come your way when you least expect it and you

could find yourself in the express lane tosuccess! Just remember, be sure to dressyour best. A friend who’s moved away willmove back into your area. Another reasonto celebrate!

VIRGO An improvement in your worksituation gives you reason to smile

early in the month. You’ll feel a great weightoff your shoulders. In matters of romance, too, there are happy times ahead. If traveling thismonth, be sure you’re packed in advance.Otherwise you could forget somethingimportant.

LIBRA Tackle a large project with full force. Taking a half-hearted

approach will only make things drag on. Useyour Libran tenacity to get things done. A lovedone’s kindness will give you reason to smile.A Cancer plays a major role this month.Romance looks promising.

SCORPIO A new Libra friend givesyou valuable insight into a troubling

situation. You’ll realize that there’s more thanone way to skin a cat. If you’ve been feelingworn out lately, you may want to take note ofyour sleeping habits. Are you getting enough? If not, catch up on those zzz’s!

SAGITTARIUS If you’re working onan important project now, be sure to

stay focused on the job at hand. Letting littlethings distract you will only prolong theinevitable. Watch for investment opportuni-ties later in the month. You could stumbleupon a diamond in the rough.

CAPRICORN What you think of asharmless teasing may come off as offen-

sive or even hurtful to someone who doesn’tappreciate your sense of humor. Be especiallycautious if you’re dealing with an extra-sen-sitive Pisces. Take the lead when planning aspecial event. Your creativity will add a lot.

AQUARIUS Not dealing with aproblem won’t make it go away. It will

only get worse. Face it head on and work tofix it. A disappointment later in the month willprove to be a blessing in disguise. You’ll feelthat fate probably had something to do withit. A surprise comes through the mail.

PISCES Instead of trying to relieve the symptoms of an ongoing

problem, you’d be better off looking for apermanent cure. Try to give a loved oneextra space if (s)he is in a crabby mood. This applies especially for the introspectiveCancer. Beware of a Leo with badintentions.

April is an ideal time tocatch Savannah Rivershad.

Just inside the North Carolina border on the southeastern side of the AppalachianMountains, the Savannah River begins its epic301-mile journey to the sea.

The winding river divides Georgia and SouthCarolina, for the most part, and hosts abounty of fish and game. Deer, duck andturkey forage along the river, and virtuallyevery freshwater fish can be found in themiddle to upper reaches. As this estuarynears the ocean, saltwater and freshwater fishoften mingle.

The Savannah River’s hold on me is strongestin the spring, where some 40+ years ago Iwas introduced to shad fishing by GeneBaldwin. I’m not talking about shad fishingwith a rod and reel -- an exciting way to catchthem, but done by few -- but with a drift net,an even less popular method. Like manyforms of fishing, nets are becoming rare.Declining fish populations, coupled withincreasing fisherman populations, have madeindiscriminate, efficient net fisheries a thing ofthe past.

Shad, like salmon, are anadromous, whichmeans they live their life at sea and migrateup the freshwater rivers to spawn. The largeroe sacs, for those who know, are a delicacyand a cherished rite of spring.

Shad have a remarkably complex bonestructure, which is why few people eat themeat. Old-timers would often bake the whole

fish for six or more hours tocook the fine bones out. Today,a handful of locals still knowhow to bone a shad, which

yields delicious, sweet meat.

This year, Gene told me Union GeneralWilliam T. Sherman crossed the river at thelocation of our camp during his march onSouth Carolina as part of the “War ofNorthern Aggression.” I’m sure the riverlooked much the same back then, for it stillhas a primeval feel today. Sadly, drifting a netwill soon become a historical footnote, likeSherman’s legendary march, as only a fewfisherman still practice this art.

Just as spring is the renewal of the soul, drifting the Savannah River watching for thecorks to bob, signaling a “sally” or roe shadfinding the net, kicks off my year. We driftapproximately 35 miles up the river where arock wall soars up some 50 feet high on theGeorgia side. The beauty of the flora andfauna, along with the welcome solitude, restores my soul every time.

Shad are also cobia candy, but that’s a topicfor next month!

Don’ t miss thenew “ Finatic” boat, which can accom-modate up to 12 passengers and fea-tures a special three-hour shark / dolphineco-tour trip. Hilton Head Island’ s sp ring is a season for allof the senses. W arm w eather mix ed w ithlingering cooler breezes mark s the beginningof the sense celebration. Birds returning tonests and insects buzzing about continue tostimulate y our hearing. L astly , but certainlynot the least, colors and smells of newblooms stimulate both sight and smell.

Confederate Jasmine or Star Jasmine,Trachelospermum jasminoides, stands apartas a fragrant plant that grows as a climbingvine or a sprawling shrub. Spring brings thissignature fragrance that we can smell allover Hilton Head Island. This plant can beidentified as a twining evergreen and awoody perennial with opposite oval andwaxy leaves. The foliage is generally green, except for the winter when it turns a dark redcolor. Spring and summer generate thebeautiful white star-shaped blooms. Theflower exudes the wonderful jasmine smell.

Confederate Jasmine is not actually ajasmine, but is part of its scientific namejasminoides, which means “resembling ajasmine.” This plant is native to China,Japan and Southeast Asia. Although it wasbrought to the U.S., it has naturalized itself incertain environments. Star Jasmine growssuccessfully in the Southeast and Californiaand is not considered as an invasive speciesin the United States. This plant has a fewdifferent names, each having to do withsome form of its personality.

The name Star Jasmine is derived from itsstar shaped flowers. It is also calledConfederate Jasmine, which actually has twomeanings. Originally the Confederate part ofthe name came from its native origins in theFederation of the Malay States, which istoday’s Malaysia. Some think that the

Confederate part of its name camedue to its naturalization anddistribution in the Southeastern U.S.

It has also been called the Traders Compass,a name originating in Uzbekistan. It’sbelieved that this plant would help point well-meaning traders in the right direction.

Confederate Jasmine is cultivated for anumber of different purposes. Mostcommonly people want it as an ornamentalitem in their gardens. It’s also harvested forthe smell, creating beautiful perfumesaround the world. The stems are used tocreate paper products as well as rope, dueto its strength and hardy nature.

However, the entire plant is poisonous ifconsumed raw. Some people will experienceallergic skin reactions if they touch the plant. When the leaves and roots are cut and dried, they can be used to treat rheumatism, todissipate pathogenic heat in the blood andas an anti-inflammatory. At times, the driedstems and leaves may be mixed with otherplant materials to create other medicines.

Confederate Jasmine is extremely hardy andeasy to grow. It’s hardy, drought-resistantand also resistant to short-term groundfreezes. It’s a great plant for beginnergardeners because it grows easily andabundantly.

Learn more about this nativeLowcountry species, whichhangs from boughs overhead.

Spanish MossBy Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

April in the Lowcountry marks the height ofspring. At this time of year, native plants andanimals are preparing for the long days ofsummer.

Pollen tends to cover every imaginablesurface in April, as trees and shrubs taketurns blooming in various ways. Some treesexhibit full coverings of white or pink flowers, while other plants bloom more subtly. Onesuch inconspicuous bloomer is Spanish moss.

This iconic Southern plant is covered inminiature coral-colored flowers now and willdisperse its seeds into the wind in a fewweeks. The weightless seeds will seek outnooks and crannies in the bark of oak andmyrtle trees. There, with the help of nutrientsin the air, the seeds will begin to grow thedistinctive thick gray beard of Spanish Moss.

Interestingly, the Spanish moss found in theLowcountry is neither Spanish, nor a moss. It’s an epiphyte, or air plant, which gets all ofthe water and nutrients it needs to survivefrom the air. Believe it or not, its closestrelative in the plant world is the pineapple.

Spanish moss tends to grow on oaks andmyrtles because their aspiration processproduces nutrients favored by the moss.Unlike mistletoe, Spanish moss is not aparasite, because it lives in harmony with thetree. The only danger the moss poses to thetree is that when it gets wet, it gets heavy.Under extreme conditions, the weight of themoss can break off the host tree limb.

Spanish moss is a true native Lowcountry

species. When the Spanish and Englishfirst colonized this part of the country, they found local Native Americans usingSpanish moss for ceremonial clothing.

The Native American name for the plant wasroughly translated as “nature’s beard.” TheBritish renamed it “Spanish Beard” as acheeky insult to their competitors in the NewWorld. Over time, it has been called OldMan’s Beard, White Beard, Florida Crapeand Wool Crape. Eventually, it came to becalled simply Spanish moss.

The plant is composed of interconnectedshort strands. The exterior of each strandappears gray and scaly. The processed inte-rior of the plant was used in commercialproducts until the early 1970s. Over time, ithas been used to manufacture lids for cook-ing pots, blankets, building insulation, plasterreinforcement, floor mats, string, sacks, firearrows, sponges, fertilizer, privacy fences, mattresses and more. Believe it or not, theseats of Henry Ford’s first Model T werestuffed with Spanish moss.

The history and culture of the Lowcountry isinterwoven with its plant and animalinhabitants. Get outside with a professionalguide this spring and discover all of theseuniq ue connections!

These popular sports have more incommon than meets the eye.

Golf & Tennis: A Natural Match By Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

Tennis players tend to be greatgolfers, which may come as a bitof a surprise. Although these twosports may appear, on the surface,to be very different, they actuallyshare many similarities with regardto their mechanics.

The forehand stroke in tennisincludes a rotation to the back footand then a rotation to the frontfoot. The same core muscles dothe work in a proper golf swing.Every time a tennis player strokes aforehand, they’re developing thosemuscles.

Take your hands and place themon the sides of your trunk abovethe belt line and below your ribs. Now laugh and feel the contractionof the obliq ue muscles. This musclesq ueezes your lungs and forces theair out of your lungs for a hearty

Photography by Rob Tipton/Boomkin Productions

laugh. The same action takes place when you cough.Triggered by the need to clear your air-ways, thesemuscles contract and force the air out of your lungs.

Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal has developed his obliq uemuscles and increased his racq uet speed considerably.Grand Slam winners who have pursued competitive golfinclude Ivan Lendl and Leyton Hewitt. Plus, tennis greatStan Smith of Hilton Head Island can beat almost anyonein competitive golf.

That’s because the approach to the impact of the ball andthe follow through are so similar in golf and tennis. As aresult, tennis players have a head start in learning propergolf.

I invite you to give your knees a rest and begin the naturaltransition to golf. You can learn to be an athletic golferlike Bobby Riggs, who visited Palmetto Dunes Resortfreq uently in the 70s and 80s. Riggs would play tennis inthe morning, eat lunch and go to the driving range look-ing for a golf game.

Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus broke down a longstandi-ng barrier separating the active tennis players and theperceived non-athletic golfers who rode in carts or walkedthe course. When Nicklaus built a tennis court in hisbackyard and a photograph of him playing tennis with hisfamily appeared in a national magazine, people beganmixing the sports in their agendas.

Now, we know the two games complement each otherperfectly. As a result, you will play better tennis if you playgolf and vice versa. The tennis racq uet and the golf clubare, admittedly, q uite different, but the two sports share somany different q ualities, attributes and strategies.

In April, the championship golf courses and world-classtennis courts on Hilton Head Island offer ideal oppor-tunities to perfect your game. Make the most of your timeon the golf course this spring. Always be sure to wear ahat and sunscreen, even when the spring temperaturesseem moderate.

I' ll see you out on the green!

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a

red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound yourwarning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend

to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.

Be courteous, alert and predictable.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides over 50 milesof public pathways and nature trails for the enj oyment ofpedestrians and cyclists.

At low tide, the Island’ s 12 miles of beaches are idealfor bik ing. Public beaches are indicated on the IslandEvents’ Island Map.

Our map also shows the ex isting public pathways. Many k iosk s are located along the pathways with anIsland-wide map on one side, and a localized map of thearea on the other.
